Its one of the oldest temple in Madurai, nearly as old as Meenakshi Amman temple. Its is believed that, built by Pandiyas and additional construction by Nayakars around 16th century. The entire temple structure is buildt by huge stone granites. Its one of the famous temple for Sorga Vaasal opening ceremony. U can feel a calmness when you visit this temple. Highly recommended. A place where we can see 10 Avatars of Vishnu as different Statues, as well as beutiful paintings in the temple premises. . A temple which was under construction when I visited. . It needs some financial assistance as well to maintain it.

very much in the heart of the temple town, but due to bad roads, difficult to walk, once into the temple premises, its great. better to hire an auto to reach. Three levels -- sitting, standing and shayana Perumal. Three levels / storeys. steep steps ,, but worth visiting.

An at least 15 century old temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Viyoga Sundararrajan and his consort Godess Lakshmi who is worshipped as Mathuravalli. The temple is believed to have been constructed in the 6th century with additions and developments by later rulers and philanthropists. Iy is a huge temple with beautiful architecture and huge pillars adorned with the sculptures of divine and mythical figures. It is not very far from the railway station and is easily accessible.

This Vishnu temple is big and powerful temple. Situated in heart of the city in Madhurai. A visit to temple is glorious with many positive vibes passing nearby. The surrounding if the temple is congested with not so tidy and clean. But, one can visit by walk. At 5-00 pm pooja is done nicely. 3-4 god temples like Goddess Lakshmi are there. Very nice and thrilling to feed oxen here with leaf provided by local vendors for cheaper rate. Temples are maintained nicely. We find old sculptures and paintings here.

Shri Koodal Azhagar Temple is located very nearer to the Periyar Bus Stand and Railway Station, Madurai. It's also nearer to Sri Meenakshi Amman Temple. This Temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams  dedicated to Vishnu. This Temple is glorified in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham. The temple is enclosed in a rectangular enclosure with huge granite walls. The Vimana is believed to be the work of Visvakarma, , the divine architect. The shadow of the vimana does not fall on the ground. The Ashtanga Vimana is temple was expanded during the rule of Madurai Nayaks in the 16th century. The second floor has a shrine dedicated to Suryanarayana standing along with goddesses. Madurai Is the place where the song 'Pallandu Pallandu Palairathuaandu' sung early in the morning in all the Perumal Temples in the world. Perumal is seen in all 3 kolams standing, sitting and Sayana at this place. Devotees who visit Kudalazhagar on Puratasi Saturday worship Him by garlanding Him with tulsi. It is the unshakable belief of the devotees that if they pray around the temple for 1 mandal i.e. 48 days, they will get what they want. The Kumbabishegam of the temple was held on 20 January 2024.

This temple is one of the 108 Divya desams. It's located in the main city, but it is a very pacifying place. Nice sculptures. Great temple to be visited. Visiting regularly for the past one month, feeling energized.

A temple at the heart of the city of Madurai . Though looks small from outside, leaves you awestruck with the beautiful sculptures once you enter inside. The idol Lord Vishnu is comparatively huge in size. Photographers will definitly enjoy the visit to this temple but need to take pass for still and video camera. It is just 3 to 4 kms away from Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple .

I have loved this Vishnu Bhagwan temple situated nearby the railway station. I visited in the second half and there was no queue at all. The temple has only one entry gate and is easily accessible.

Very neat template in the busy streets of the the core city. As temple gopuram painting work is under process, public access to the top roof is restricted now. It is one of the important temples to be visited text to Meenakshi Amman temple. It will be less crowded in the day time.

One of the Divyadesams of lord Vishnu. Wonderful age old temple to visit in Temple city. Parking space for four wheelers is available infront of the temple area. Meenakshi temple west tower is walkable from this place so anyone can park their four wheeler and reach meenakshi temple in 10 minutes by walk.

The temple is great just the inner chamber is a bit suffocating there needs to be proper exhaust as a large number of people visit it and the crowd is compressed in that small way around the main chamber. Apart from that the main deity idol is very amusing.

An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Surprisingly not as well known as Ma Meenakshi temple. Details of history, architecture, timings etc are available on the net. I'll concentrate on the spiritual and physical experience. Spiritually uplifting. Peaceful and calming. Physical: can get crowded esp in evenings. Darshan can take more than an hour. Queues are disciplined. Lot of helpful police personnel. Temple administration should provide better facilities. The surroundings should be better maintained. Signboards should be in English also. Coming from North India, we were at a loss very often and had to depend on locals conversant in English or Hindi. Police and locals are eager to help

One of the Divya desam temples of God Vishnu. Beautiful temple with Vishnu in 3 forms at 3 levels. All idols are huge The lowest is the sitting form which is the main deity koodal Azhagar, middle one is the standing for Suryanarayana and the top one is Vishnu in the reclining pose Ananthasayana. We have to buy tickets and climb stairs to see upper levels. Definitely worth a visit in Madurai. It is very close to the Meenakshi temple

AS PER MY OPINION…. It’s a 2nd most visitable temple after Meenakshi temple of Madurai. Doors open closes at 12pm and again open at 4 pm. If you having 20-30 mints … suggest you to visit the nearest temple to this temple too …. That’s also visitable. Adding pics of that temple too.

Temple located within madurai city center. Moolavar murthy is attractive, due to temple renovation woks access to upper level is not allowed. Swami desikan சன்னதி is just outside main temple. The day I visited perumal came in garuda vahanam and azwar in yanai vahanam.

I don't know about the exact history of this temple. But it is one of the most popular temples in Madurai. Lord Vishnu is the main god. It located near to the Periyar bus stand. Maintenance of this temple is good. There are many hotels and restaurants available around the temple. Both bike and car parking spaces are available. Entry free. Drinking water available. Very pleasant place for meditation.

Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Koodal Azhagar Temple/ Koodal Azhagar Koil is situated in the heart of Madurai city. In Tamil language, Koodal stands for Madurai while Azhagar means ‘beautiful one’. This ancient temple of Madurai is located quite close to Meenakshi Amman Temple. A popular pilgrimage and an intricate part of Madurai tour, this temple is considered to be one of the 108 Lord Vishnu’s holy abodes (divyadesams).

No need to buy any special tickets. There was no checking for mobile phone, etc. Go on a weekday at around 10a and there won't be much crowd. The roads leading to the temple are narrow and many are one-way, best is to avoid taking your car. Instead use an auto to get to this temple. Ask the auto driver for perumal temple.

Koodal Aḻagar temple covers an area of about 2 acres (0.81 hectares) and has a five-tiered gopuram (gateway tower) raising to a height of 125 ft (38 m). The temple is enclosed in a rectangular enclosure with huge granite walls. The central shrine has an elevated structure and houses the images of the presiding deity, Koodal Aḻagar, in three forms, namely sitting, standing and reclining postures. The average waiting time is 10 minutes, and it is not crowded. The temple is easily accessible from Madurai Periyar bus stand and railway stations.

So plan to visit before this time. Again it get open around 4pm in evening. Here deties are closely visible and you can spend some time in front of deties to perform some prayer.
