village
near
Nannilam
Rly.
station
(about
10
km).
It
has
a
very
popular
historical
background.
Paranjyothi,
the
army
commander
of
pallava
kings
of
Kanchipuram,
won
the
battle
of
Vathapi
(present
day
Badami,
Karnataka)
against
chalukya
king
Pulikesi
II.
He
brought
an
idol
of
Ganesha
from
the
Fort
there
and
constructed
a
temple
for
Vathapi
Ganapathy.
Later
many
Chola
kings
developed
a
big
Shiva
temple
around.
the
lord
is
known
as
Utradipatheeswar
and
goddess
is
known
as
Vandarkuzhali.
Paranjyothi
became
a
pious
person
and
dedicates
his
life
in
the
service
of
lord
Shiva.
To
test
his
devotion,
Shiva
appears
as
a
fakir
and
was
invited
by
paranjyothi
for
Lunch.
Shiva
puts
a
condition
that
he
will
have
meat
of
a
boy
(Pillai
curry),
of
only
son
of
the
parents,
prepared
by
his
own
mother.
Paranjyothi
accepts
the
condition
and
offers
his
own
son
meat
prepared
by
his
wife,
as
offering
to
Shiva.
Before
starting
with
his
lunch,
Shiva
calls
the
name
of
the
boy.
The
meat
ball
on
the
plate
disappears
and
the
boy
comes
back
alive.
Shiva
blesses
them
and
disappears.
This
story
is
enacted
every
year
on
Chitra
Bharani,
as
Amudhu
Padaiyal
(
feast).
About
25-30
thousands
come
here
on
that
day.
The
Pillai
curry
is
now
made
of
mixture
of
rice,
moong,
elachi,lavang,
cocunut
powder,etc.
This
is
given
as
Prasada.
Those
who
wish
to
have
children
take
this
Pillai
curry
and
vow
to
return
to
the
temple
after
their
child
is
born.

festival
was
celebrated
here.
