Only
less
than
a
year
from
now,
from
March
2023,
you
will
be
able
to
go
to
Rameswaram
from
Mainland
India
through
a
much
better,
safer,
faster
and
secure
second
bridge
just
adjacent
to
the
present
Pamban
Bridge.
The
New
Pamban
Bridge
is
currently
under
construction
since
2020.
In
mid-2022,
the
Ministry
of
Railways
announced
that
a
new
railway
bridge
will
be
constructed
near
the
old
Pamban
Bridge
at
a
cost
of
βΉ
250
crores.
This
new
dual
track
bridge
is
planned
to
be
constructed
in
automotive
mode,
allowing
two
ships
to
pass
this
bridge
at
the
same
time.
It
will
be
India's
first
Vertical
Lift
sea
Bridge.
While
the
current
bridge
has
the
'Scherzer'
rolling
lift
technology
in
which
the
bridge
opens
up
horizontally,
to
let
ships
pass
through,
in
the
new
one,
the
63-
metre
section
will
lift
vertically
upwards
remaining
parallel
to
the
deck.
It
will
be
done
automatically
using
sensors
at
each
end.
The
new
bridge
will
help
the
railways
to
operate
trains
at
higher
speed,
carry
more
weight
and
increase
the
volume
of
traffic
between
south-eastern
Tamil
Nadu
and
Rameswaram
Island.
Indian
Railways
began
the
construction
work
on
the
new
bridge
in
the
starting
point
of
the
bridge
in
the
mainland
section
of
Mandapam
in
mid-2020.
It
was
expected
to
be
ready
by
March
2022,
but
got
delayed
to
March
2023
due
to
COVID-19.
