A bit surprise during our trip, no wonder it is in the Unesco tentative list! Amazing Romanian Church in Wallachian Byzantine style, with original frescoes nearly 700 years old in really good state. The pretty exterior doesn't prepare you for the awe-striking interior. The colours are so vivid, despite all this time... Definitely a must when en route to Tranfagaran road or Horezu.

If you visit Curtea de Argeș, don't forget to visit the complex of historical monuments called Curtea Domnească. Here you can quietly visit the "Saint Nicholas" Church, a church completed in 1352 and the interior painting is included in the UNESCO list. Let's not forget the fact that the Curtea de Argeş complex was originally built in the 13th century by the Romanian voivode Senesalv and that it was the seat of Wallachia. Constantin Brătianu, the father of the former prime minister Ion C Brătianu, is buried in the church. Unfortunately, to reach Curtea de Argeș from Râmnicu Vâlcea (DJ678A) you have to have a lot of patience and strong nerves because of the miserable road, which denotes a gross lack of interest and an inconceivable indolence on the part of its administrator.

A beautiful, well preserved church. Didn't get to go inside as it was closed on that day but just admiring it from all angles outside was sufficient to know rhis is a treasure of our history that is worth visiting. I will always be amaze by human ingenuity and imagination. Thus is a perfect example.

Wonderful Romanian Orthodox Church, in Wallachian Byzantine style, with original frescoes dating back to the 14th century. Also typical and original is the way the walls were "woven" with layers of stone and brick, creating a beautiful optical effect.

Stopped here with our tour guide on the way back from Poenari Castle to see this beautiful Church. I believe one of the leaders of Romania is buried here. The Church dates back to Basarab I. There was an awesome tour guide helper stationed at the Church who knew everything about the murals and the history and secret symbolism. You could tell he was enthralled with the Church and history. Does anyone know his name???
