to
spend
a
great
day
or

"The
Nicolae
Romanescu
Park
in
Craiova
is
the
largest
and
most
famous
park
of
the
city,
being
declared
a
historical
monument.
At
the
initiative
of
Nicolae
P.
Romanescu,
the
mayor
of
Craiova
at
the
time,
the
park
was
designed
by
the
French
architect
Édouard
Redont.
In
1900,
the
plans
for
the
park
were
awarded
a
gold
medal
at
the
Paris
Universal
Exhibition
(1900).
Construction
began
in
1901
and
was
completed
in
1903.
The
total
area
of
the
park
is
more
than
96
hectares
and
includes,
in
addition
to
the
ornamental
plantations
of
trees
and
shrubs,
an
expanse
of
water
of
more
than
4
hectares,
consisting
of
a
series
of
ponds
with
water
lilies
connected
to
each
other
by
small
waterfalls
or
crossed
by
footpaths,
home
to
many
species
of
waterfowl,
fish,
turtles,
a
lake
with
recreational
boats
and
an
island
reachable
by
2
bridges.
In
this
park
there
are
some
very
interesting
tourist
sights
such
as:
-
Suspension
Bridge
-
a
very
old
bridge
built
in
1901-1902.
-
The
Enchanted
Castle
-
is
a
castle
(former
restaurant)
located
on
one
of
the
hills,
near
the
bridge,
now
a
tourist
attraction.
-
Craiova
Hippodrome
-
Inaugurated
in
1903,
it
was
used
for
trotting
and
galloping
races.
After
the
Second
World
War,
the
part
in
front
of
the
tribune
was
transformed
into
a
field
for
jumping
competitions.
Since
2000,
no
important
competitions
have
been
held,
only
a
riding
school
operates
here
and
the
trotting
track
is
used
for
the
organization
of
athletics
competitions.
There
is
an
intention
to
modernize
and
re-use
the
racecourse
as
well
as
the
nearby
velodrome.
-
The
Zoo
-
is
among
the
oldest
in
Romania.
It
is
home
to
a
lot
of
exotic
animals
such
as:

tiger,
bear,
lion,
wolf,
llama,
goat,
deer,
mouflon,
brown
capuchin
monkey,
