After working in Sydney for more than 10 years never knew about this place until yesterday.. what a unique and weird place. The entrance is just a back door and you go down into a basement. Then you see the largest collection of whiskey and alcohol that I have ever seen. Some of the whiskey that we tasted was very good. The bartenders know what they are doing. Simply say what you want or let them decide if you explain the preferences. The whiskey shots range from about $15 upwards to more than $800..! If whiskey is what you like definitely check this place out. Be prepared to spend big.. The experience itself is awesome. Don’t forget if you are going here don’t drive.. as you will come out a bit fresh..😂😃

Absolutely loved this place. Even though I'm not a whisky drinker. The atmosphere is like you've taken a step back in time. You'll find yourself walking down a dodgy alley way, to then make your way down some dodgy stairs to find this amazing bar. It is definitely worth checking out if you're in Sydney. The cocktails are amazing. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. You get mini pretzels at your table. And there is a massive range of whisky/scotch drinks to choose from.

Loved this experience! Great place for whiskey lovers, but even if you aren't, come anyway! You go through a back alley and down some dodgy feeling stairs, only to be brought back in time.

Speakeasy bar that we recently discovered a bout 2 weeks ago!! Such a chill place to hide and chitchat with your friends. They make amazing cocktails, too!

Hard to fault once inside. However the entrance alleyway is absolutely filthy. Smells like urine the entire way, and once you find an entrance that looks reasonable you realise it's another bar called Clarence. Once you find the sign for Baxter Inn which is a printed A4 paper against the wall, you go down an equally filthy set of stairs and what looks like a fire exit. As lovely as the service and drinks are, I can't bring myself to ever invite anyone here based on the gross alleyway entrance.

Hands down, still the best whiskey bar in Sydney. I always opt to sit at the bar, so I can get the recommendations from the knowledgeable bar staff. It always amazes me how much they know, remember and hit the mark with their suggestions. The selection on offer is enormous and I always end up getting to sample whiskeys that are tasty and won't find in your local Dan Murphy's store. But they do those as well, if you are looking for it. My best experience has always been to sample scotches from the various regions in Scotland. It always makes for a great night. Keep up the excellent work team.

Very busy place which is understandable because of the awesome vibes. Hard to get a seat but when you do, it’s very chilled out. Whiskey collection is huge but prices are average. Visited the joint on a Wednesday around 10pm and it was quieter. The professional bar tender took us for a tour into there cellar, very nice gesture. My clients enjoyed it. Definitely will be back for more !

Amazing experience of a speakeasy bar with some amazing cocktails. Ordered an old fashioned and they killed it 😀 worth the money but most importantly the ambiance and lighting was worth it. Had a good time away from hustle bustle of city. Finding it was a bit of a task 😁

WATCH as he puts the cherry down my orange peel? 😵🍒 Baxter's has been on my list for a while and on a night out we didn't see a queue so we took the plunge. It's a great place to spend some money on delicious drinks! Seriously some of these drinks were so easy to drink and it was fun trying the different cocktails. They offer negroni on tap and of course memories of blackout night followed 🤘 The menu was pizza from Frankies and since it's now shut I'm not sure what they'll do for food. However they do offer free nibbles. Hope that's enough 🙏 All in all very nice venue.

This is an underground powerhouse that transformed me into a whiskey drinker. Try their whiskey sour or the old fashioned and you'll never go back! The Baxter Inn has fantastic staff who smile and look after you all night. The venue is wonderfully "hidden" with a dark, moody atmosphere. Beautiful horse portraits and boxing legend photos frame the walls to create an old town, American vibe. You'll get free pretzels here to snack on, yay! This place is incredible and set the bar so high I didn't want to review it (I hate queues). Thanks to the team at this establishment. 😀

Really cool speakeasy bar in Sydney 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻🤫🥃 i love how it was soooooo speakeasy - located in the basement of a building at the back of an alleyway! Worth a go! Yes the queue was so long but the ‘turnover rate’ is also really high- we only waited for like 10-15 mins on a Friday night

We had such a wonderful night out in this gem of a place with Peaky Blinders vibes. The eerie alleyway leading to the nondescript stairs down to the entrance added to the noir film ambience. Free flow yummy mini pretzels complemented the lovely cocktails as we soaked in the bustling yet cosy atmosphere.

Fabulous place for a whisky lover. Staff is courteous and knowledgeable when comes to recommendations. Chic ambience with a laid back dull lighting, which is perfect when you want to relax with your dram on hand. It got super busy around 8pm on a hump day and we were lucky to be inside early on. Definitely a hidden door to get access to this place but I appreciate it to be such. Only someone very keen on whisky will do the treasure hunt to find the right door.

  • 5/5 Tomas R. 5 months ago on Google
Are you enthusiastic and passionate about whisky? If the answer is yes, you definitely need to visit this place, I think they have more than 500 whisky around the world, which probably could be more. It's a hidden bar in the heart of cbd, nice music, and nice pretzel snacks.

  • 5/5 Emma C. 2 years ago on Google
Can't rate this place highly enough. The guys are so knowledgeable about whisky and willing to share their knowledge with no pressure to buy a dram. When I said bartenders choice for the final drink, they picked a mid-range price rather than focussing on profit as they thought we'd like it based on what we'd been drinking. 9pm is the witching hour though, so if you want a peaceful drink, get in before then.

One of the best cocktail bar in Sydney. Located in a hidden place, not so easy to find the first time but is it worth 100%. Cocktails are good, a lot of whiskey and the staff is friendly. Maybe the music is a little bit to high so having a conversation is not that easy but after the second drink you won't mind. Recommended

Down the stairs at the back of Barber s Shop, The Baxter Inn has a nice vibe and pumping music. I recommend to come a little earlier, so you can get a seat. Unfortunate that some of the mid range whisky isn't in stock (3 of 4 that I tried to order), however the bar tender was able to recommend alternatives. It is a bit loud in here, but you get a good feel of a good old bar vibe.

Must go! Well known yet tucked away in the corner of an inner alley and guarded by a friendly bouncer, with a vast selection of scotches, whiskeys, delicious signature cocktails and old time blues tunes. True library just for spirits!

Lovely decor, outstanding atmosphere and whisky selection. This time we went for espresso martinis because we were about to have dinner and wanted something delicious with caffeine. We overheard bartenders recommending different kinds of whiskeys and had the impression they were very knowledgeable. Not surprised this place is quite busy even at 5pm. It's something straight out of Harry Potter and I keep it on my list when my family comes from overseas to visit.

10/10 would recommend!!!!! I LOVE out of the way bars, especially ones that serve whisky. Amazing range of whisky and even more talented staff that know their stuff. It's a small capacity bar so get in early or you need to line up and wait..... But the wait is definitely worth it.

The best whiskey bar in a speakeasy fashion. I love whiskey and this bar had more selection of whiskey than I have ever seen. The staff is very knowledgeable about the hundreds of products. A hidden gem open 7 days a week from 4 pm until 3 am. Also a good wine selection that my wife enjoyed. If you get to one bar in Sydney, this should be it. You won't be disappointed.

Very loud & social atmosphere, definitely gives off the vibe of the 1920’s. Bartenders are great at what they do, they perform with a smile on their face, & are attentive to the big lines they’re smashed with. I wasn’t a fan of the dark liquor on the cocktail menu, & the bartender gave me great suggestions, & made me something exactly to the tastes I like (Charlie Chaplin cocktail). The place is quite cramped, had a few drinks spilled on me just trying to make it to my table, so grab a table the second you see it. But once you sit down, you’ll enjoy yourself. Nice & dark, dimly lit with candles all over the vicinity, so it washed a sense of calm over you. Great little underground bar with a bit of class, worth a go! Old school music playing, so gives you great nostalgia from the music your parents would’ve played. (Also thank you to the bartender that helped me out when he noticed a man that was getting too close & was bothering me, I appreciate your kindness very much!)

Really good whisky bar with an amazing selection of whiskys from around the world. Staff know their stuff and are friendly and it's great to see them pouring the drinks and climbing on ladders to find stuff. The whisky cocktails are great too. Underground, secret bar with an entrance down a fire escape in a back alley off the main street. The candles seem to have been dripping wax for years but it looks great. There's some space to sit depending on how busy it is. Early in the evening is great if you want a quiet time at the bar with a mate, they'll give you free pretzels too.

First time at Baxters. Loved it. Fun friendly atmosphere. Bar Tenders are very good. If you want to try something new you’ve never had before they’ll make you an excellent drink I described what I enjoy and a price point. They didn’t disappoint.

Hot dang, just walked into (actually struggled to find the entrance) of one of the good bars in Sydney. Hands down great pretzels, great cocktails (try the Hollywood & Vine if you may) and great service (Hayden & Finlay are the MVPs). Gotta keep coming back and back.

  • 4/5 RACHIT G. 1 year ago on Google
The place is great and ambiance is awesome as well along with accurate price point. However the placing of tables is not good. They should arrange something so that people away from bar can also order easily. It is great if you are sitting near the bar otherwise it’s awful experience to get a drink. Hope it helps

Must go spot in Sydney and not just for whiskey lovers. Multiple options for non whiskey drinkers but for myself the best whiskey sour and old fashions I’ve ever had. Even bottomless ordinary pretzels seem like the greatest treat. Atmosphere is always amazing and the bartenders are by far the greatest.

  • 5/5 briana h. 1 year ago on Google
Wow! What an amazing bar! Excellent bartenders slinging out creative and traditional cocktails with an impressive selection of whiskey and gin. Cool speakeasy vibes, feels like walking into the Great Gatsby novel. Drinks start at about 25$ so the tab could easily get away from you, but worth it! If you are looking for something special this is the place. It’s down an alley in an unmarked location but across from the Duke of Clarence signs. I’m highly critical of cocktails but I have no notes for this bar!

A favourite watering hole, especially when introducing to friends. The atmosphere is wonderful. The first time you first step through the entrance doorway, you think you've taken a wrong turn, but keep going and all will be revealed.

Must go to place in Sydney. I have never been to a place with as much whiskey. They have a bible and they know their history. I pretty much had a whiskey tasting your of Australia and the prices are reasonable and visible. Glenn and Glynn were both exceptional. Thanks again.

I have been to this bar a couple of times. If you want a good whiskey based cocktail, come here. Great vibe, great atmosphere. It's busy and crowded but well worth the visit.

Intimate whisky bar right in the heart of Sydney. The atmosphere is classy, and the drinks are super refined. Old fashioned was one of the best I've had. Whisky selection is comprehensive. Beer selection has some interesting drops which was a pleasant surprise. Service was impeccable, the barstaff were friendly and patient, even though we went during the most busy time on a Saturday night. Free pretzels which are definitely appreciated. Absolutely highly recommended!

  • 4/5 Pimalyn 10 months ago on Google
I must say, it's a whisky lover's paradise. This unique bar boasts an impressive selection of whiskies from around the world, making it a haven for enthusiasts. The dimly lit ambiance adds to the overall charm, creating an intimate atmosphere. However, the darkness can be a bit overwhelming at times, making it challenging to navigate and fully appreciate the whisky displays. Additionally, the noise level inside the bar tends to be quite loud, which can hinder conversations and detract from the overall experience. Nevertheless, if you're willing to embrace the darkness and enjoy the lively atmosphere, the Baxter Inn is definitely worth a visit for its extensive whisky collection and unique ambiance.

  • 5/5 sum s. 8 months ago on Google
The nostalgia of having to walk into a dark laneway and then down and back entrance to a basement to find an Old Style whisky Bar was like walking back in time! Sitting at the Bar you get overwhelmed by the selection of whisky on display! And the continuous cocktail making performance was entertainment enough for anyone looking for a good night out! Only found this place due to the lack of venue opening at late hours on a weekday, and this place open till 3am!

  • 5/5 J M. 10 months ago on Google
Was enjoying the bar too much that we forgot to take photos of the drinks! Great vibes and service, couldn't give 5 stars for Atmosphere due to the noise level but I guess it's understandable due to how popular this place is~ There is a HUGE variety of drinks and their signature cocktails are also GREAT. Be prepared to queue up though~

One of the coolest themed bars, EVER. The bartenders are of such high calibre and very well-versed in their alcohols - also incredibly friendly and happy to have a chat (turns out that intriguing glass box on the left wall are gun handles!!). Awesome atmosphere here, of course, and some really special alcohols though the price is a bit on the higher end!!! Also, the ladders just are the coolest thing in the world, how do you guys not fall and break all the bottles?!?!? My god. Amazing.

One of the best bars in the CBD. Hidden down a back alley, down a sketchy staircase you open up to an amazing prohibition styled saloon. Always a line up so go early! Knowledgeable bar staff with a BIBLE sized liquor menu. 10/10 recommend.

this Speakeasy is one of my best discovery on this trip. Not just because I love Whiskey but because it is a legitimate contender for the best lounges, bars, clubs in Sydney. The staff there is on top of their game. The Whiskey menu is extensive although a few more Japanese options could be added. The interior is brilliant and throughout you can find all sorts of memorabilia from a time passed. I highly recommend it and I hope to be back soon. For your information, the way in is through the alley, turn right, descend as dodgy flight of stairs…and voila !!

This place is an absolute vibe. Amazing selection of whiskies and some pretty nice beers as well. Nice dim lighting, constant stream of pretzels, but nothing beats the smack of whiskey you get the moment you walk through the door - which you find at the bottom of a fire escape. Amazing.

We drank so many of the Salt drinks and ate so many bowls of pretzels here we absolutely ruined our dinner res and it was 1000% worth it. This is one of my favorite bars I've ever been to and Tom is an absolute gem. Highly recommend to whisky and non whisky lovers -- I am usually not interested but the Salt bev was the best cocktail I've had.

A whiskey heaven hidden in a back alley down in a dark, musty, candle lit basement cellar! The barman (I'm sure there's a more correct name) are extremely knowledgeable about the 1,000 or so bottles on offer from all over the globe. Came here with a friend visiting sydney. Heard a lot about this place and was shocked to find an underground prohibition era style speakeasy through a random alleyway and down a dodgy staircase and door at the bottom. The vibe was loud, bustling and chaotic. Definitely should hit up one of these bars if you're visiting Sydney. It's an interesting experience. You would not normally come across a place like this.
