An ancient house with a proud historical story. Places are numbered and follow the numbers to get rid of missing anything. There are two main roads to reach this place. From Embilipitiya road is the easiest and road condition is good. From Sooriyakanda road is very difficult but beautiful. If you're coming from the Embilipitiya road, don't forget to visit Panamure Elephant Kraal which is always connected with Maduwanwela Walawwa in ancient time. Parking is available for 20-30 vehicles. No ticketings. Entrance free.

This ancient bungalow and the building complex was built in 18th century and since was subject to continuous renovations under different regimes. Originally owned by an area-head under the king's rule. There's a court room where cases were heard and judged by the village head. The architecture, specially the mosaic art is fascinating. A nice example of the impact of colonial influence on country's constructions. Recommended to spend at least 2 hours to get the full experience and cover the full complex.

Maduwanwala Walawwa was constructed in 1700 during the reign of King Wimaladharmasuriya II. During early 20th century, this Walawwa was strengthened with 121 rooms & court room. This complex has a nice serene environment and some fine architecture which existed in colonial era. Maduwanwala Walawwa is open for the general public from 8 am to 5 pm. It is not required to purchase a ticket to enter the premises.

Probably generally underated. Highly impressive, culturally important but very enlightening property. Architecture, design & structure classic examples of British influenced local craftsman. No photos or video 🤔

Fascinating piece of architecture. A very good illustration of the rich society of ancient Ceylon. The walawwa in its full glory had consisted of 121 rooms and 21 courtyards. There has even been a room for mensuration period of females. 😅 The Maduwanwela family dates back to the 16th century. The peak of the family was during James Maduwanwela in 1844. Since the family did not have male descendants after his death in 1940, the premises was handed over to the Archaeological department in 1974. There are no tickets and informational posters are placed around the premises. A visit here is highly recommended.

The google locations give you the exact directions, but you will have to look around to identify the entrance though. The premises was huge since this was a mansion of an ancient noble family named Maduwanwela only a part of the original building remains and you can read about other prominent noble families in the exhibit area inside as well. Good place to observe the architectural features of noble mansions from Sri Lanka. Pictures are prohibited inside the building.

This majestic walawwa was built by Maduwanwela Maha Mohottala in 1700 AC in King Vinaladharmasooriya II 's reign. A large building with it's own temple, a court of law, and hundreds of rooms of which today remains only few parts in it's original majestic condition. The current walawwa also houses a small museum which concerns maduwanwala family details & property within it's premises.

Often referred to as the Dark Prince of Ceylon, the Maduwanwela Disawe was a personality that defined an era. His influence with the colonial administrators of his time were such that they even bestowed on him the title of Sir James William. His ancestral home, the Maduwanwela Walawwa, is a reflection of the Disawe’s personality and an architectural icon of a bygone era. The town of Kolonne lies between Embilipitiya and Suriyawewa. It is an area of tranquil beauty with paddy fields and tall trees that span out across the plains and provide much needed shade. We visited Maduwanwela Walawwa on a bright, sunny day when the workers in the paddy field and the bustle of a farmer’s market made the village come alive in vivid colours and tones.

Maduwanwela Walawwa is accessible via Embilipitiya along the Panamura-Kolonna highway (27 kilometres). Since we are travelling from Ratnapura, we took a quite adventures and arduous journey through harsher terrain, turning off at Madampe junction deviation to Rakwana- Kolonna across Bulutota pass, climbing upward ten hairpin bends from Rakwana that presents a magical change of view. The distance to Maduwanwela Walawwa is about 30kilometres this way, but the road from Suriyakanda to Kolonna is in bad condition full of potholes.

Nice place to see a glimpse of the life of a Sinhalese bureaucrat. Even it is a huge home the plan is awkward possibly due to additions done from time to time. The place is currently under the control of Archaeological Department. There are employees who explains everything about the villa. But they do not allow to take photos inside. It is unfair because they do not have any leaflet, booklet or photos of the place to sell.

It's normally free but I had to pay because of my skin color. The short guy who works there went to ask my local boyfriend for money because I'm a foreigner. There's no sign anywhere saying that foreigners are charged. He's a thief and that's a scam. He didn't even explain me anything as he couldn't speak English. The place is nice though but kappati people are the plag of SL.
