If you like working hard for a reward this is the attraction for you. The arduous climb is really hard work, around 5200 steps, so make sure you're fit or really determined, but the feeling of satisfaction you get when you reach the top is tremendous. And when the sun rises it lights up the beautiful and pristine landscape around. Make sure you catch the perfectly triangular shadow of the mountain at the back. If you like moths as well there are thousands of them right at the top. It may not be the most spiritual experience you have but it is definitely worth it for the view from the top. A really amazing and worthwhile experience.

Great place to visit. Famous for its hike up Adam's peak, located within. It is quite a gruelling climb up the 5500 steps but certainly doable if you take your time. An ascent will take you anywhere between 2 to 4 hours so if you want to see the sunrise (around 6 am) plan accordingly. The view up top is amazing though.

"Sri Pada" Peak Wilderness sanctuary is a tropical rain forest that spreads over a land of 224 square kilometers around the Sri Pada mountain. A huge forest area that belonged to the Peak Wilderness was cut down and cleared during the British colonial rule in Sri Lanka (1815-1948) to gain land for the massive tea estates which are still functioning in Nuwara Eliya district. The remaining portion of the Peak Wilderness was declared a wildlife sanctuary on October 25, 1940.

This mountainous forest is declared as a Sanctuary by the government as the forest surrounds the peak on which the Lord Buddha the self enlightened one has set his footprint. The forest reserve gets damaged due to pilgrimage of the devotees during the season of worship. The government the environment groups and several voluntary organisations do their best to protect the forest. Even through there are signs everywhere asking devotees not to discard garbage to the forest and most of them would not, there are those selfish and uncaring fools who does the damage.

Sri Pada (ශ්‍රී පාද) is a 2,243 m (7,359 ft) tall conical sacred mountain located in central Sri Lanka. It is well known for the ශ්‍රී පාද aka "sacred footprint", a 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit. In Buddhist tradition the print is held to be the footprint of the Buddha. Other names in Sanskrit sources include Mount Lanka, Ratnagiri (Mountain of Gems), Malayagiri (Mount Malaya) or Mount Rohana. The mountain is also seen as the abode of the deity Saman and also goes by various names associated with this, including Sumanakuta (Sumana's Mountain) and Samanalakanda (Saman's Mountain or Mountain of the Butteries)

Out of the eight species of panthers living in the world, the sub-species, Sri Lankan Panther is extraordinary due to its very limited population. The Sri Lankan black panther is believed to have gained it’s unique characteristics due to a colour mutation. The dark-furred leopard that made headlines earlier this week is not of an extinct species as claimed by some but an otherwise ordinary leopard displaying a colour mutation, experts said. Images of a so called black panther that was captured by a trap camera in the central hills in October last year went viral online yesterday following an announcement of its discovery by the Department of Wildlife (DWC). The animal is a melanistic colour variant of the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) and not its own species, the Department said today. DWC Director General M G C Sooriyabandara told EconomyNext that reports claiming the panther is of an extinct species are false. “It is not a species different from the Sri Lankan leopard. The animal has got black fur due to a colour variation and there is nothing really unusual about it. There were many reports circulating in the media that it’s of an extinct species that’s been rediscovered. This is not true, since [species of the panther genus] have a long lifespan and therefore it is not possible a species to go extinct and be found again within a short period of time,” he said. “It is not scientifically proven that these panthers had gone extinct,” he added. Meanwhile in a statement issued yesterday, the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society (WNPS), an organisation engaged in wildlife protection, explained that ‘black panther’ is a misnomer. “Everyone has heard of a black panther, which in reality, is just a leopard with black background fur, which obscures the cat’s spots. It is not a separate species; in fact, black-furred and spotted cubs can be siblings born of the same litter. Known as melanism, black fur in leopards and domestic cats is the result of a single recessive gene for coat colour, whereas in jaguars it results from a single dominant gene. “Melanistic or black individuals appear in many if not all species [of wild cats] but do so frequently among leopards, jaguars, margays, ocelots. So the ‘Black Panther’ is a misnomer. It is not a separate species of leopard. It is not a separate subspecies of leopard,” WPNS said. DWC Director General Sooriyabandara urged the public to not disturb the animal. “We request the public not to harm the leopard by trying to spot it in the wild, because there is nothing unusual about the animal. It is just like any other animal. Trying to spot it forcefully can disrupt its natural behaviour,” he said. (Colombo/Jan21/2020)

The Peak Wilderness Sanctuary expands across 22,379 hectares in the wet zone of Sri Lanka and is home to a large extent of mostly intact forests. Declared as a sanctuary in 1940, this eco system provides refuge to a large amount of endemic biodiversity making it one of Sri Lanka’s most important conservation areas. It is also significant as the sanctuary that supports the last remnant wet zone elephant population in the country following its separation from the lowland forests. This separation caused by deforestation has isolated an estimated number of 30 – 50 elephants, a population size that allows the viability of the species, in the mountainous high elevations of the peak wilderness forests. The sanctuary also holds a spiritual and cultural value as all the foot paths to Adams Peak falls across the forests. The journey to Adams Peak is one of the most revered pilgrimages in Sri Lanka and is graced by thousands annually. This strenuous climb begins in the wet evergreen habitat of the sanctuary and ends amidst the montane forests in the region providing a perfect opportunity to observe some of the most unique high altitudinal birds in the bioregion.

Sri Pada" Peak Wilderness sanctuary is a tropical rain forest that spreads over a land of 224 square kilometers around the Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) mountain. The contours of "Sri Pada" Peak Wilderness vary from 1000 to 7360 feet above sea level. Therefore, it possesses unusual geographical formations compared to the other natural reserves of the island. Bena Samanala (6579 ft), Dotalugala, Detanagala, are some of the taller mountains in the Peak Wilderness. It is also the birthplace of Kelani, Kalu, Walave rivers and many tributaries of the river Mahaweli which make waterfalls such as Dotalu falls, Geradi falls, Galagama falls (655 ft), and Mapanana falls (330 ft) inside the sanctuary. Out of the 3 access routes; Hatton route, Kuruwita route and Palabaddala route, which Buddhist devotees and other tourists use to reach the Adam’s Peak, Kuruwita and Palabaddala routes go right across the Peak Wilderness sanctuary. This forest area is entirely under the control of Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Department. It does not maintain any lodge, bungalow or such type of facility for tourists inside Peak Wilderness sanctuary in order to safeguard the purity of this forest. Yet, there is no restriction for eco-tourists to enter the sanctuary after obtaining permission from Sri Lanka Wildlife Conservation Department. Entering the sanctuary during the rain season is at the tourist’s own risk because of the unforeseen downpours and instant floods lead to life-risk situations.

Out of the 22,000 plus hectares gazetted under the sanctuary it's the Sri padhaya; utterly the most prominent peak which is being worshipped by many people who have various religious believes. All above it is mainly believed that the sacred Footprint of "Gautama" Lord Buddha is to be placed on jewels under the place of worship. If you are visiting please follow the notices put up on the way regarding the disposal of garbage in the sanctuary. It's better if you can carry home your garbage than disposing them in the sactuary.

To climb it is necessary to overcome about 6 thousand steps . It took us about 2 hours one way, but we were walking at a very good pace. We went up to the peak on December 25. A lot of local, because they have a day off . Last year, we went up in early January - there were more tourists. At the top, traffic jam is one of those who are tired and can't get up . It's not cold at night, just shorts and a light windbreaker. But it's very windy up there, so it's better to take warm clothes with you . A very beautiful place to meet the dawn, if you do not interfere with the heads of other tourists

All the more reason for tourists to definitely try it! This was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.🇱🇰 ❤️

Very 1st time in Sri Paada Visit. Really nice surrounding with beautiful environment, clear and cool water sources .. There are main 3 ways to get into Uda Maluwa at the top of the Samanala Mountain , they are 1. Hatton Road , 2. Rathnapura Palabaddhala Road , and 3. Kuruwita Erathna Road.. Hatton road is the most popular road among devotees.. People climb this scared mountain samanala to worship Buddha's Left foot print has established there. This is a main place of worship among buddhists.. There are a main season to worship this palce start from May to December in every year..That time period is called as " Sripaa Waaraya" . And also there is a off season called as "Awaree" .. There is no access vehicles to the top of the mountain , only have to walk on foot.. There are so many little shops beside the road that can bought foods and beverages while hiking. And also have lavotary facilities beside the road.. This scard and beautiful place must protect to the future generation, so usage of environment polluters such as polythene and ect must be avoided.. We should protect this beautiful place as much as we can..

A beautiful place to visit at least once. A place that attracts many foreign tourists. This place can be reached by many routes. Enjoy the beauty of the environment. But keep it clean. Most of the people leave garbage on the side of the road, in the forest and on the hill. Even places of rest are dirty by writing various things on the walls. Don't do these things. Do not mistreat animals. Leave only footprints.
