Great stop for a pint & food. Cosy seating inside and great open area outside too. A couple of Good Old Boy pints went down well with lads & I loved their local 'Sam' cider. Light & slightly sweet. Their sausage baguettes were really good and nice chips (coeliac friendly). Really lovely staff too.

I love this place. Night cycled here with husband for a pint of my favourite ale, Good Old Boy. Cash only.

Same family running the pub for over a century and a 400 year old structure. Well worth a visit if you can find it.

In a constantly changing world, it's nice to find something that doesn't. I've been coming here for over 40 years and members of my family much longer. A classic British pub with a warm welcome and great beer. Living away from the area now it's great to nip in and relax by the fire, remembering times past and friendly banter of the present.

Excellent place to visit for lunch for a sausage chiabata and a couple of pints after a 16 mile bike ride.

Fantastic pub out near Checkendon. Really friendly, and the set up inside and outside the pub makes it feel cosy and inviting. I asked the landlady how old the pub is.... about 400 years old! Indoors there are fireplaces, and comfy seats, and outside there is a marquee, with skittle alley, and an amazing log burner that looks like an old JCB digger arm. Oh, and there is a darts board indoors too. Highly recommend this country pub.

Completely unique pub on a back lane. Essentially unchanged for a century and one of the last of its kind. Even better, it is run by lovely people. Come stop on a walk for a baguette and a pint.

One of the genuinely old and unspoiled historic pubs, secluded and quiet. Nothing fancy, just drinks and snacks, in a cosy, quiet pub.

Great pub. Just how pubs used to be and just how a pub should be. Had a lovely lunch here.

A proper old fashion pub run by proper people! A good selection of beers and cider, what more could you want?

Nothing competes with the Black Horse. Once all English pubs were similar but this is the last one left because its family run and not part of a chain or a brewery. The difference is 100% enjoyable and a real break from the insane modern world.

The pub in the woods, authentic, eclectic mix of hikers, bikers and locals

I am rating this pub 5-star because it is very special and reluctantly because it would be spoiled by convoys of Chelsea tractors pitching up en masse. Best to walk or cycle there to fully appreciate its attraction. The local beer is excellent and and the food most tasty if you’re hungry ... it’s very basic i.e. just what you want to soak up the authentic atmosphere.

Probably one of the most traditional pubs in the whole of the UK . Great atmosphere and owners are great . Highly recommended

The most friendliest pub you will ever go to. Family run pub for several generations now. If you didn't know it was there or didn't know the area. You would never find it if it wasn't for Google maps nowaday. I can't find a down side because it's set away from all the world to relax and drink without the hussel and bussel of towns and cities. Great atmosphere 5 stars all day long. Don't go there and expect a fruit machine and a jukebox this is one of the last proper country pubs you will find.
