the parks of the pena palace is so much more worth than the castle itself. save half the price of the ticket (park only 7.5 € instead of 14 € combined, 2018), and you can still visit the courtyards and terraces of the palace (you only miss the inside rooms) and have the views without the 30-60 min queues (just walk along, they all queue for the interiors). in the park one can enjoy the freedom in the vast area and explore the dozens of interesting places, like temples, viewpoints, warmhouse, lakes and birdhouses. the lake valley entry of the park (backside of the palace) is way less crowded. the castle's cafe is much cheaper than the other cafés in the park, so pack up a picnic there.

Pure magic - Wonderland! Start with the castle but allocate a few hours for the gardens, the highlight of our visit. I would recommend starting from the top then going down and exiting from there. You can follow the path but it's more fun to get lost and stumble on gems.

The gardens surrounding the Pena Palace were planted as the Palace was being built. It houses several exotic species and follows a wild, naturalistic layout, with several follies like lakes, creeks and bridges partially hidden within the dense vegetation, following the romantic taste of the time. It blends naturally with the woods of the hills of Sintra. The temperature of the gardens is lower than in its surroungs, making it comfortable during hot summer days, but calls for a warmer garment during winter. The exuberant vegetation is magical and calls for a slow stroll around its sinuous paths.

Gorgeous. Just gorgeous. Best place to go with friends and have a picnic or relax on your own with a book in the shade of the old chapel. Would give it 10 stars if I could.

Absolutely beautiful palace, incredibly renovated (check the before/after photos on the rooms of the first floor) and very interesting history, of this pearl in the beautiful mountain of Sintra. The gardens are very well kept, and beautiful laid out. Plenty of parking spots outside the main gate. Definitely worth a visit!

Beautiful surroundings, the forest around the gardens are an amazing spectacle, so if you like hiking... Go explore! To enter in La Pena, you need to buy tickets, and there is a ticket office right at the entrance, make sure you go early to try to skip all the tourists buses, otherwise... The experience is not the same. Enjoy!

Pena park's garden offers an amazing excursion in the nature. There are walkways and earthen paths which lead to the palace, or to the high cross or far away to the chalet. Though not very physically demanding, it's no piece of cake and one should always carry lot of water and some snack (there are no bars nor fountains in the garden, and it's very easy to be walking one hour straight if one is heading uphill). The view is breathtaking, especially from the high cross from where you can see the colorful palace. Entrance costs 7.50€ which can be integrated once already inside if one decides to enter the palace too (thus for an extra 6.50€).

Terrible. Map is not to scale and is confusing. Signage is inadequate. We ventured to the edges of the park thinking we could exit there. Exits were closed and that wasn’t noted anyplace. We came across other parties completely lost and trying to get out to no avail. Gardens were unkempt. It was tiring, hot completely uninteresting (due to the fact it’s barely kept up) and we became quite lost. Cut ourselves on overgrown brambles covering paths. Cafeteria had very minimal items. Muffins and some really bad egg desserts. We were starving. Really bad time.

This place is overestimated. The crowd of tourists stay in a long queue, no parking, traffic jams… I’d not recommend to pay any money for entrance and visit it at all. There are plenty of view points just half an hour drive to the ocean side, go there instead.

This was the biggest disappointment on this day. Which association has a man with the word "garden" ? 90% think about flowers. Surprise: try to find some flowers. Only trees and fern. No care or not enough. Make some coffee shops and snacks before entering the castle and people say "thank you"

This park with his own micro climate is beautiful! It is an amazing and scenic road to get to the palace. In summer it is very refreshing walling through the trees. The air is very clean and fresh. There is a point where you can get a perfect view of the castle, very nice. Totally recommended if you like nature.

Place: 4/5 Experience: 5/5 How long did it take me to see everything: 2 hours for the Gardens, 30 min for the exterior of the Palace The place has a unique microclimate so it's not as hot as the rest of the city which makes long walks a pleasure. A few of the attractions located in the park are the Seven Lakes with duck houses, the High Cross, the Temple, Greeenhouses, and of course the Pena Palace itself. Long queue and the way the traffic was organized to get to the Palace made the experience less attractive. If I were to do it again, I'd be happy to just see the Palace from the distance and focus on the Gardens.

This isn't a classical royal garden, this is a royal park covering 200 heactres. Be prepared for long walks up and down the paths to find the beautiful sights. There is a free hop on hop off bus that will take you from the base of the last stairs on the way to the palace. This bus will take you to the chalet, over 20 mins in the bus. Look at the timetable to plan your ride.

A beautiful grounds, of perhaps more interest than that Palace itself! Scattered works of contemporary art, clear signposting and eminently walkable trails with plenty of shade make this an excellent outing.

The park area blew me away with a new wonderful sights around every corner. I seriously got all giddy from all the beautiful spots. It was a rainy day but they sell umbrellas and (even better) ponchos at the palace shop. In the end the rain made the park feel even more lush and scared away a lot of visitors so we had the place basically to ourselves! Will come back.

(Translated by Google) Spectacular park near the castle. A mandatory point to visit when going to Portugal. A garden that extends over a plateau comprising 3 small mountains. To visit all the attractions of the place it takes a day and there is never a lack of new landscapes and beautiful areas that can delight photographers. The discovery of the forest is relaxing and very interesting, with many paths and walkways, with fountains and streams. The colorful castle is now open as a museum dominating the top with a visual opening on the valley below. To visit without doubts. Fair and inexpensive price of the entrance ticket. Logistic services are well structured and also inexpensive with total daily coverage.

(Translated by Google) Dream park. You need all day to see the whole park. To avoid wasting time with the car that in summer is horrible the traffic jams that form, I recommend going very early to be able to park, or park down in the town and that you get a tuc tuc that in 5 minutes you uploaded and forget about Where do you leave the car if you're late? You usually get € 10 per person. I recommend to take only the entrance to the gardens, because the queues are usually tremendous to see the palaces, which you see that there are not many people because you buy the one of the palaces also but it is a shame to miss the whole park for waiting for there is a lot watch. You can walk to everything, gardens, high cross, castle do muros, go down to the village through the forest and see the villas that can be seen, the fifth regaleira. They do not sell food in the park. There are only thickening machines. And the three snacks that sell dearly and you only eat bread. The entrance to the gardens is € 7.50 per person.

(Translated by Google) Magnificent "landscaped" park with countless paths and surprises around the corner. In addition to the flamboyant Palacio de Pena that peeps out from the highest points, the park includes artificial lakes, small towers, pools, streams, stone bridges, fern gardens, and much more. They leave at least 3/4 hours to visit everything with the calm it deserves. Note: at the moment the "English garden" is little more than a point on the map; apparently it is under renovation (end of August 2019).

If you do not have children you can also explore. The only thing: exhausting slopes and the free bus is small (only 12 fit) and passes each quite. In our case the biggest problem was that each one gave us a different indication🤦🏻♀️. I ended up tired but I had a great time. It was built by Francis Cook as a summer residence. He was a textile millionaire and art collector from Britain and India was a British colony. He managed to bring 8 marble jaali windows from Jaipur and fix it here in the first floor of main atrium (central octagonal hall) as a parapet wall. Just before the entrance of the palace is the arch called Indian arch and opposite to it is the roman arch with a water tank. The Indian arch does have a sad history - it was looted from India, as a spoil of war, after the British crushed the Indians who involved in the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.

All of the many palaces we’ve seen in Portugal are these imposing, grandiose and almost overwhelming works of art. Monserrate was a pleasantly surprising change. It’s a much smaller, romantic oasis nestled in a sprawling forest of everything from roses to succulents to exotic flowers I’ve never seen before, all shadowed by ancient trees with roots that are determined to keep them around forever, crawling over the ground. But as though to not be judged by its small size, the amount of intricate, painstaking detail packed into the palace is more than any other I’ve seen. Every inch of the walls and ceilings are carved with beautiful detail. Over the centuries among various owners, it has welcomed artists, musicians, journalists and even people fleeing the Nazis’ grip during WWII.

(Translated by Google) Entry value is expensive. But it is definitely worth the price. Very beautiful place with magnificent gardens. About 3 hours of walking. There is a park at the entrance, but on busy days, it can fill up quickly. (Original) Valor de entrada é caro. Mas sem dúvida vale o preço. Lugar muito bonito e com jardins magníficos. Cerca de 3horas de passeio. Tem parque a entrada, mas em dias com muita gente, pode encher rapidamente.

A must visit when in Sintra. The Palace is stunning. It blends Gothic, Arab and Indian influences. The Music Room and the Central Atrium are stunning. And the Park is great to explore with its themed gardens. We strolled through the Fern Valley onto the ruins of a Chapel, then to the Mexican Garden and finally the Rose Garden before we visited the Palace. We stopped to marvel at the great diversity of the plants and show many curiosities to our young son, such as unusual mushrooms and vegetation.

Much better than inside of the palace!

The palace is very nice to look around. The ticket for inside inst really necessary, the park is enough, and the gardens are big enough to get lost for most of a day. It's very nicely kept and very lush and green.

Nice bit a little bit crowded, if you want to save money just pay the entry fee for the gardens, you'll have stunning views as well

Great park with different sceneries. Perfect hike on a sunny day. Don't forget your hiking shoes and water.

Amazing park, stunningly beautiful. Simply paradise. We spent 5 hours there, without even visiting the castle itself (crazy queues, not worth waiting)

Beautiful park. Expect some steep climbing.

Peña Park is beautiful and very quiet in the morning. Well worth the hike from Sintra. Peña Palace itself.... wish I'd skipped. Too crowded and excruciatingly slow as you're herded through the palace interiors.

The only minus is a lot of people here. But the garden is big and beautiful with old trees and all coloured flowers. The smell is magical here

Beautiful park with tropical plants and a labyrinthine network of paths. Plenty of shade and so many amazing hidden corners to explore. You can walk uphill all the way to the Peña Palace or let gravity work for you and start at the top near the palace. Make sure to pre-book tickets and a time slot early if you want to go into the palace. The gardens are usually not too busy it seems but you’ll need a ticket as well.

Great place, not so friendly for food, water, drinks. There is only one place to eat and it is inside the palace and for the park you need 3-4 hours and only in 2 places you can buy water. So come prepared because it is worth it.
