The engraved text is a little difficult to read but it’s worth a visit if you appreciate Revolutionary War history (or you’ve seen the AMC show “Turn: Washington’s Spies” in which Maj. John AndrĂ© is a main character. The show is on Netflix as of 2021) The monument is in the middle of a residential street, sort of like the middle of a small traffic circle — you can park along the road but be sure not to block any driveways. If visiting André’s monument, be sure to also visit the nearby Washington’s Headquarters at the DeWint House and grab a meal at the Old ‘76 House, both right around the corner from this memorial in historic Tappan, NY.

This is a cool little slice of history smack dab in the middle of a suburban neighborhood right on the NY/NJ border. For those that don't recall, Major Andre was an officer in the royal army who was captured after meeting with Benedict Arnold to discuss secret plans for Arnold to surrender West Point and defect to the British. He was also portrayed on the A&E series, Turn. This monument is at the spot where he was hung and initially buried before his remains were later returned to England. The monument is on a cul-de-sac, but I was able to park on the straight away portion of the street without blocking traffic.

Very simple and feels sort of plunked down in the middle of a residential street. But knowing the story Major John Andre, I found it very moving and was doubly touched by how the current local illustrates how closely history can live next to us.

This is the execution site of Major John André, the most famous spy of the Revolution. His final days began with a chance encounter in Tarrytown where he was intercepted by three Continental soldiers he mistook for British soldiers and ended on this hill where he was hung by the neck to die. Today, the site is in the middle of a circle that splits a residential road and is memorialized with a cenotaph. Andre's final words are rumored to be: "Bear me witness that I bear my fate like a brave man."

If you've watched AMC's series "Turn - Washington's Spies," you will want to visit this site - the site of Major John Andre's execution. If not, maybe you'll be inspired to learn about this interesting chapter involving the infamous Benedict Arnold.

He was held in Tappan N.Y, then hung for his part with Benedict Arnold. The monument is in the middle of the street which you have to drive around on both sides.

Folks John Andre was not a American spie, he was a British spy, Benedict Arnold was American General turn spy. Monument is in a residential area, but was placed he was hanged, the old 76 house were he was held and tried is several blocks down road

Interesting spot to visit. Ignore the uninformed posting below. Andre was not a traitor he was a British officer on a mission. He was captured not by continental soldiers but some locals out prowling around. The hanging in Turn bore not the slightest resemblance to the actual events which were far more interesting.

After lunch in the park at DeWint, I went up the hill to the memorial. I was inspired by TURN.

Unique memorial that reminds us of the stories history of the region. I just happened upon it. Would not recommend coming out of your way unless you’re a revolutionary war nut.

Worth visiting if you are a history buff. Eat at the Old 76 House then drive up to the Andre monument. It is in a residential area with no parking.
