This has to be one of the most photographed gates of the Old Town. I was surprised to learn that it opened in 1955, and was designed to increase traffic flow in the Old Town. The gate got its name from the near by Temple of the Virgin of Burgo.

Welcome, esteemed visitors, to Panayia Gate, also known as the Virgin Mary Gate, one of the primary entrances to the medieval Old Town of Rhodes. This significant gateway, rich in history and architectural grandeur, offers an intriguing introduction to the UNESCO World Heritage site that awaits you within. **Historical Background** The Panayia Gate is one of eleven gates that punctuate the formidable walls of the Old City. Constructed during the rule of the Knights Hospitaller in the 14th century, it was a crucial point of entry and defense. The name "Panayia" or "Virgin Mary" reflects the religious orientation of the Knights, who were devout Christians. **Architectural Details** The gate showcases elements of medieval military architecture, designed to ward off potential invaders. As you approach, you'll notice the massive stone walls, intricate carvings, and the emblem of the Order of the Knights Hospitaller above the entrance. It's a captivating example of the fortification techniques employed during the period. **Strategic Importance** In the past, the Panayia Gate was a strategic entryway that led directly to the inner sanctum of the Knights' domain, including the Street of the Knights and the Grand Master's Palace. This made it a highly guarded and vital access point during times of conflict or siege. **Modern Use and Surroundings** Today, the gate serves as a more welcoming passage for tourists and locals alike, leading to many of the Old Town’s famous attractions, shops, and restaurants. Upon entering, you’ll immediately experience the unique blend of cultures and epochs that define Rhodes, from medieval architecture to Ottoman-era mosques and Byzantine churches. **Visitor Tips** The gate is within walking distance of several significant sites, making it a good starting point for your exploration of the Old Town. Nearby, you’ll find important landmarks such as the Palace of the Grand Master and the Archaeological Museum. In conclusion, the Panayia Gate not only serves as a historical monument but also as a threshold to a rich, multifaceted past. It's the perfect place to begin your journey through the layers of history that make up the Old City of Rhodes. Thank you for joining me, and I encourage you to pass through this ancient gate and explore the wonders that lie beyond!

Just take a moment to stand back standing inside the gate and look out through the gate with the perfect blue sky above and the turquoise water breaking through the gate. It is like a Masterpiece with its contrasting colours and textures.

Although not one of the original gates of the old town, you almost get a picture perfect view of the harbor, just spoiled by the signs and system to prevent the traffic...
