This is one of the best kept medieval castles in Europe's entirety. This location is full of History and Greek Heritage. This castle has history going back to 408 BC and the walls protect an estimated 175 000 square meters. There are plenty of shop's to visit, restaurants and cafes. I recommend you visit this place.

Exploring the medieval city of Rhodes was an enchanting journey into the past that left me captivated by its timeless beauty. This ancient town, adorned with meticulously preserved architectural treasures, is a testament to its rich history and cultural heritage. As I wandered through its labyrinthine streets, I couldn't help but feel transported to a bygone era. The allure of the medieval city lies not only in its architectural artifacts, but also in the vibrant atmosphere that permeates its every corner. The cobblestone pathways wind their way past charming eateries and cozy cafes, offering a chance to savor delicious local cuisine and unwind with a refreshing drink. The juxtaposition of modern-day comforts against the backdrop of centuries-old architecture creates a unique and harmonious blend. Museums peppered throughout the area add a layer of depth to the experience. From archaeological wonders to art galleries, each museum tells a story of the city's evolution and the people who once inhabited its walls. These cultural gems allow visitors like me to immerse themselves in the heritage and legacy of Rhodes. Venturing into the medieval city offers a refreshing change of pace from the bustling city center. The tranquility that envelopes the area is both serene and rejuvenating, providing a chance to step away from the hustle and bustle and embrace the slower rhythm of life within the old town's walls. Overall, my journey through the medieval city of Rhodes was a captivating escape into history, culture, and authenticity. It's a destination that effortlessly bridges the gap between past and present, offering a memorable experience that will undoubtedly linger in my memories for years to come.

Absolutely stunning - ideally preserved Crusaders' fortress and medieval town with traces of earlier Roman and Byzantine as well as later, Ottoman influences. The town is very lively, apart from touristy parts people still live their peaceful lives in ancient walls. One week is not sufficient to full explore the Old Town!

Beautiful. So much character. Plenty to see and do around the area. Not short of places for food and drink. Plenty of jewelry shops, cloths shops, leather goods. An absolute must see if you visit the island! You won't be disappointed. One word of advice, don't be hustled into a restaurant go to the ones that don't ask you to join them but always ask for the price menu.

I normally hate anywhere that's too crowded or too touristy. But Rhodes Old Town is just..charming! The bustle of people just adds to it, and because there are so many alleys and hidden alcoves to explore the crowd, it is never overwhelming. In fact, plenty of times you feel you're the only ones exploring this unique and beautiful place. So, shops. Plenty! From stunning jewellery to fridge magnets. Good prices and lots of choice Food. So many Tavernas and bars! Some in the main squares others hidden down alleys, and all seemed busy. We saw lots of big portions going out though, so you may not need starters! History. You can spend as much or as little time taking in all the History of the City, visit the museums and the ruins, or just walk around inside the City walls and feel like you've gone back in time. Whether you want to or not, the culture will find you! It's just a great place to visit.

Lovely place to visit, lots of shops and restaurants. You can wander around the lanes for hours and have a look around the old buildings. Well worth a visit and then leave at the entrance to the marina, it's a beautiful walk along the sea front.

When we were on vacation in Rhodes, we took a local bus from the hotel almost every evening. Then we wandered around the old town and admired the walls. Of course, you can also shop and eat very well here. We quenched our thirst here several times.

Incredible place to visit day or night (do both if in town). Time has stood still and the architecture design is incredible considering the thousands of years most of these buildings have been standing. Great shopping experience and plenty of good restaurants.

A beautiful town with the contrast of old and new. Every bit of tat imaginable is for sale. We went Sunday so parking is free in most places plus it's a big change over day so a touch quieter. The castle was a good hour well wasted. The cafes in the square's will pull your pants down but if you surprised that's on you. The harbour is nice, with the Colossus replacement goats etc. The acropolis and theater are worth the walk.

Beautiful place and well worth a visit, but beware to check prices in bars and restaurants before you buy its a tourist trap and some places try and rip off tourists charging 34 euro for 2 drinks !! Nice to go early evening and walk the town and absorb the atmosphere before dinner.

The City just begs to be photographed! It is majestic! Wear proper walking shoes, the stone roads can be a bit uncomfortable if your shoes aren't appropriate. Lots of cats so be careful if you are allergic. Positively there are ATMs and toilet at every turn, so there is nothing to worry about. And everything you need is within walking distance. I absolutely love this city. Hopefully we can visit in summer when everything is open. We went at the end of January which is off season, most everything was closed. But those that were open were awesome.

Rhodes is lovely. Split into the old and new town, we visited several times when staying nearby. We loved the old town, especially at night. A fantastic atmosphere and lovely shops, with no pressure to go in and buy.

One of the most beautiful places we visited in Rhodes. Walking inside the walls of the historic city is like a dip in the past. This city looks like a mixture of civilizations, of those who have conquered it over the centuries, from the Italian domination, near the port, to the Byzantine one, passing through the Turkish domination, where you can see clearly Ottoman minarets and architecture, up to the crucible. of civilization of the current city.

Nice huge are of the old town of Rhodes, that's been a heritage of the ancient times here in Greece. Lots of interesting historical places to visit and worth visiting, however seems like many if them haven't been much renovated, nor reconstructed for the future generations. What also surprised me was lacking descriptions, information on specific architectural places, buildings, statues, etc. All I could have known was what I did learn and read myself before this visit.

Like someone else said, this is less of landmark and more of a shopping centre. As a result, it’s so easy to fall for tourist traps. It goes without saying to always ask for prices and avoid assuming as you might just be shocked. With that being said, there a few gems where you can get affordable authentic Greek souvenirs particularly the art and wood shops to

Fantastic experience walking through the historical streets of medieval Rhodes. Many shops and lots of life. Lovely views all around. Coffee shops, restaurants and tavernas available. Quite busy and full of life. Beautiful ruins all around. Would recommend

The old Town of Rhodes is one of kind in Greece. It is the only historical town with a Gothic architecture. The town is quite large, there are lots of quiet alley and hidden places to explore, so you never feel too crowded. On the downside, parking is not easy to find if you arrive after 8am. I am also surprised that the local people are not forbidden to drive their vehicles into the narrow streets inside the town, which creates unnecessary road noise, and safety hazard for pedestrians sharing the same narrow road (see photos).

Leave plenty of time to explore the museum and Palace. The small streets full of so many different small shops, eating and drinking places, are amazing, and stretch for what seems like a warren of miles. I loved it and loved the atmosphere. Shops are small and sell everything from gold jewelry, artisan home made or designed goods, local delicacies, the list goes on

A romantic, mesmerising place to visit. Lots of shops offering all types of goodies from Olive wood products to gold and silver shops. Some of the best places to eat in the area too. Very friendly locals who just love to make sure your visit is a memorable one.

My first times in Rhodes, it was a day trip whilst we were in Marmaris. This place is filled with culture, definitely a place for history buffs like myself. The people were amazing, and friendly. We will return, and I can't wait

Very beautiful, takes a long time to walk around, in the night time it is so pretty yo walk around, all the shops and everything. You can pay to go visit the tower and you also gets a free drink if you do so. There was lots of street cats. And some parts of the walk around the town on the outside of it, if you walk where its trees and plants something has a very strong smell.

We stayed in the Medieval City for 3 days. It was great touristy fun. Great architecture, lots of things to do from museums to shops and restaurants. Each day there were several cruise ships docked for the day so it does get crowded but it makes the place more lively and fun that way.

Another great visit to the medieval City or Rhodes. It is both beautiful by day as it is at night. Lots of places to eat, drink and shop. The buildings are spectacular and the lanes leading from street to street and dramatic and interesting. There are guided tours however we have not yet done one of these however we met some people that would highly recomend it. Overall another great family experience.

Loved our visit to Rhodes, so much history all over the town. We found that heading off the beaten track was better for food and the price dropped significantly compared to the main through fare, managed to find a nice small hotel which had a fabulous courtyard restaurant in full shade. We were only at Rhodes for a day but i am sure we just scratched the surface.

Beautiful historical town, place of the Rhodes colossus, the atmosphere here is simply amazing, The whole island is very nice, small and surprisingly green, with lots of vegetation. Sea is as blue as it gets, clear with lots of life. In the city, there is plenty of stores, café, restaurants and cozy narrow streets, with beautiful architecture. It is worth spending a whole day just wandering around the city and enjoying the views. Highly recommended if you are on the island of Rhodes.

Fantastic place to visit. Historic town with lots to see. It is much bigger than you might think and you definitely need a whole day here to explore. There are lots of shops and eateries, plenty of public pay toilets (50 cents a time, you need a 50 cent piece). I wouldn't recommend driving through it, park outside and walk in. Would highly recommend.

An absolutely astonishing place to visit. A guaranteed must-see if you're visiting the island. Surrounded by a huge dry moat, the Medieval City of Rhodes is an authentic glimpse into the past of knights, chivalry, romance and fierce fighting. There are off course lots of shops and restaurants for the turists, but they're actually very charming and blend in very nicely. If you leave the main roads, the old city is immediately revealy, just a few meters away from the busy shops. If you don't make any stops at all you can walk from one end to the other in about fifteen minutes. But your curiousity and phone camera is going to extend that by quite a lot. :-) There are great museums, especially the Grand Masters Palace, but also several smaller sites with a visit. Pick up a turist map or consult your pocket guide. Lots and lots to see.

Excellent historical site with well preserved streets that you can spend all day exploring. If you aren't doing an organised tour, have a read up about the area so you know the key places to go and their back story.

A beautiful medieval city, specific architecture hiding many restaurants, pubs, cafes and shops. Lovely old town atmosphere, fantastic locals. It's worth being there.

  • 5/5 Annette H. 1 year ago on Google
The old town is minutes away from the harbour. It has a mixture of shops and bars/restaurants with a lovely atmosphere. I don't think I would visit in July or August as it would be extremely busy.

This is certainly a place not to be missed. The walled city is an incredibly important heritage site and there's history pouring out of every cobbled street. There are many photo opportunities, great bar's and restaurants and a wonderful array of shops. Loved it !!

  • 5/5 Robert W. 2 years ago on Google
Stunning mix of Greek and Venetian architecture with narrow cobbled streets and alleyways. Loads of shops and restaurants all inside a citadel fringed by gigantic castle walls. Yes, its popular and busy with tourists but you can evade the masses if you look hard enough. Theres even a medieval castle in the centre thrown in for good measure!
