The medieval town of Rhodes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988, [1] was developed without specific planning around the fortress-citadel of Rhodes, probably after the earthquake of 515. [2] The fortress was divided into two distinct urban forms, Kolakio north and Chora south. Kolakio includes the well-known street of the Knights, the Palace of the Grand Master or Castello, the Hospital that has been turned into a museum, temples of the Order and other important buildings. In the Chora lies the Turkish bazaar around the Suleiman Mosque, the old market and other buildings of tourist interest. According to a concise description on the official UNESCO website, the Ospitalians of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem occupied Rhodes Market for two and a half centuries, from 1309 to 1523, transforming the city into a strong fortress because of the particular fluidity and widespread conflicts of the time. The city was later successively occupied by Turkish [4] and Italian occupation. [5] [6] It is considered one of the oldest active medieval cities and the meeting point of many cultures.

Very grand structure. The Marine or Sea Gate (Πύλη Θαλασσινή) was the main entrance to the town from the harbour. Its defensive towers have a representative task more than defence in facts due to the reduced space between the waterfront and the walls no army could have ever attempted an attack from this side of the fortifications. During World War II the Allied bombings destroyed the upper part of the North tower. In 1951 the gate was restored by the Greek administration together with the Gate of Saint Paul.

Well. If you go to Rhodes, this is what you "must" see. Very commercial, however, you pay for every attraction.

It's magic, you can see the combination of the medieval city with the modern era. A gate built 5-6 centuries ago being crossed by modern vehicles

The old town is absolutely beautiful, lovely architecture with cosy streets. Fantastic for shopping and plenty of eateries. Outside the wall is the beautiful harbour.

Maybe the most important and beautiful area of Rodos town. Walking in old town makes you believe that you live in centuries ago and feels like a fairytale. Old town of Rodos is surrounded by big tall walls and there is the awesome castle of knights inside old town.

So beautiful. Visit if you get the chance. Local shops selling local produce. Olive oil, honey, glass work, olive wood carved into beautiful items. Embroidery, footwear and places to eat and drink. Worth a visit.

Such a lovely piece of Rhodes and quite well hidden from the rest of the town. The buildings here are beautiful, narrow and filled with shops and restaurants. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town.

Impressive and imposing from the ocean side, but blends into the shops and alleyways from the city side. Very cool and worth seeing.

Nice place to visit, actually is the entrance in the old town from port side, not tickets required. If you are around is worth to enter from this part of the town

Impressive gate entrance to the old town from the port side. You need to see it after dusk when the light is on, to really appreciate its grandness and beauty.

Rhodes is so much different to the other quieter cities, its surrounded by a huge wall. The hustle and bustle of the place is overwhelming but they are really friendly people. So many shops, resteraunts, castles and the Wall that the knights built its all to see. The waiters entice you in for food and drink and you just sit and watch the world go by. They even have there own parrots, great photo opportunities aspecially with the feral cats that roam about. A day isn't long enough but a few days would be nice, so many lovely eateries that sit above the main street.cant wait. Brilliant.

The time I spent at this place is priceless and unforgettable! Such timeless beauty is rare! You feel like you are not in Greece anymore, you are not in the 21th century anymore! Visiting this place is not just a new travel location, it's traveling to another era!
