Top 5 Site To Visit In Rome No kidding. At the end, I'll specify which well-known site I'd recommend skipping in favor of Trajan’s Market & Museum of the Imperial Fora. The so-called market complex is vast, multi-level, full of passageways and staircases...just walking through it is like being a kid again and being an archaeologist--"where does this go?" and "how do I get over there or down there or up there?" and "what's in this room?" The museum is as inspiring and well-presented as that of the Capitoline Museums, though with fewer items. It's a great archaeological treasure chest of finds and information about the five Imperial Fora and the Market of Trajan, with rooms laid out starting with an overview of the Fora and then dedicated rooms to a specific Forum or the Market itself. As with the Capitoline Museums, the A/V guide is world-class and worth the extra cost. I highly recommend visitors avail themselves of the option. It's easy to use, is in multiple languages, is chock-a-block with interesting information about the museum and its holdings, provides choices of curated visits of different lengths and interests, and is physically comfortable to sling across your body. (Also, if like me you have or had a crush on Jeremy Irons and/or just love listening to his resonant voice, you can listen to him throughout your visit as he provides the voice for Emperor Trajan in the English narration.) So skip the Colosseum: it's jam-packed with people and its outside is far more appealing and provides better photos than its inside. Visit instead Mercati di Traiano & Museo dei Fori Imperali.

The Colosseum is roughly a 10-minute walk from Trajan's Market, which is located just across the "Alter of the Fatherland." Many of these historical sites are clustered together in a small space. Trajan's Market is an extension of Trajan's Column and is thought to be the world's oldest commercial mall, erected between 100 and 110 AD by an architect thought to be Emperor Trajan's aid-de-camp. Even though the ruins are apparent, one can see this magnificent monument from afar, which occupied a considerable amount of this area and contained multiple apartments on both the top and bottom levels, which is intriguing. It's fascinating to think that ancient architects with limited technology imagined and erected monuments that are comparable to today's state-of-the-art structures. I applaud the authorities in Rome for preserving these and other ancient monuments for future generations to enjoy and learn from. This location is now used for archaeological research. This is a must-see for any tourist planning a trip to Rome.

This was a very lovely museum to visit and I’m very glad I went. It had a very nice selection and collection of various works of art on display here, lots of paintings, sculptures, statues, busts and antiques to see. Its collection is very well kept and very nicely displayed. I really enjoyed the time I spent here and I would definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

This is a really incredible place and a fantastic experience: coming here and finding the ancient ruins of what we grew up seeing in History and Art books! That's a unique thing of Rome that you visit the site of what it used to be a commercial area 2,000 years ago and see it merged with a living city today, with common people living in nearby old buildings side by side with History.

This is probably one of the most underrated places in Rome. The nice thing about that is it’s quiet and you’re not getting run over by hordes of people. It was one of the few places we went to where we were able to explore and get into areas that we didn’t think we were going to be able to get into to view ruins that others are above looking upon thinking they can’t get down to see. I’m not sure how this place doesn’t get more attention. I think that people just don’t understand all of the things they have access to here. We will gladly pay the entry fee again to go and take our time next time. If you appreciate ruins, architecture, and history, give yourself two hours for this extraordinary relic. My only critique is that they are signage to get around the facility needs to be better to improve navigation of the site.

Amazing hidden gem. It sits beside The Roman Forum and Trajan's Column and you can easily miss it due to the other wonders nearby. If you're in Rome for the history, this is a must visit. You can walk through the streets of the forum, see where people would have worshipped, shopped, and lived during the early years of the Empire all the way up to Medieval Italy. The views from all floors are unbelievable. You are able to walk through history and really revel in the past. This isn't like the Colosseum or the Circus Maximus, or even the baths, this is an example of everyday life of the common Roman citizen.

I wish more tourists knew about this place. It is not the most well-known or the most historically significant site in Rome (at least for the tourists) but it is full of things to see and learn with plenty of educational displays on the history of Roman Empire and the related excavated artifacts. The most impressive part was the efforts put in by the staffs into making displays more creative and engaging. I found the displays to be more fun and more interesting to look at than the ones in the more renowned places I've visited during my 1-week stay in Rome. A beautiful view from the top + impressive brickworks included. Especially recommended for the Roman history enthusiasts!!

Originally considered among the wonders of the Classical world, Trajan’s Markets now display only a hint of their former splendor. Emperor Trajan and his architect, Apollodorus of Damascus, built this visionary complex of 150 offices and shops in the early 2nd century AD. In their heyday, the markets sold everything from Middle Eastern silks and spices to fresh fish, fruit, and flowers. Shops opened early and closed about noon. Almost all the shopping was done by men and the traders were almost exclusively male. The Forum of Trajan (AD 107–13) was built in front of the market complex. It was a vast colonnaded open space with a huge basilica, and included two libraries. Dominating the ruins today is Trajan’s Column. Spiralling up its 98 ft (30 m) high stem are minutely detailed scenes depicting episodes from Trajan’s successful military campaigns in Dacia (present-day Romania)

Trajan's Market was built in the first century AD by Apollodorus of Damascus under Emperor Trajan. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Roman Forum, if you have an interest in the history of urban form this is a must when visiting Rome. Plan on reserving at least 2 hours to wander through the many passageways of this archaeological site. You will find in addition to the many displays great views of the forum.

My wife and I enjoyed visiting the museum. I recommend visiting this location, then walking the boardwalk along Via dei Fori Imperiali to get the best perspective of the Imperial Fora. I also recommend you NOT purchase the Super Pass for the purpose of walking the grounds of the Imperial Fora only because, when on the ground level, you can't visualize which of the forums (see photos) you are actually in. Visualization is best accomplished from atop Trajan's Market museum and the aforementioned boardwalk. The boardwalk has placards that show which of the forums is in front of you (again, see pictures) - I didn't notice any such placards on the Imperial Fora ground level. Just my recommendation...food for thought.

We didn’t pay to enter the museum but we walked slowly around the perimeter of the outdoors area and checked out what we could see from the street. Even this was mind blowing, and if you get some information up on Google you can delve in to some of the history too. It’s very close to the colosseum, so can just wander past in the way.

A unique place in Rome. We are impressed by the large and well preserved building. You can walk inside the building and on the ground floor. You can also walk on old roman roads. One of our must see places in Rome.

A massive museum through this amazing ancient building. No logical itinerary on the inside so we did a lot of wandering and back tracking. There is a lot of ground to cover and we were there almost 3 hours. Amazing views from the upper stories. Had to check my small backpack but saw a lot of other people walking around with larger packs🤷🏻‍♀️ We went on the free first Sunday of the month and it was very busy.

It is a very interesting and very large place to go to spend part of your afternoon. It has incredible views, perhaps it is not one of the first places you would go on your first visit to Rome since the city is very large and has many attractions, but I recommend it, you cannot regret it.

Very nice place to visit. Original site among the other cultural stuff to do in Rome. There was also almost no one there so we could enjoy our visit. If you are not a reader I recommend taking the video guide because there is a lot of text in the initial part of the exposition. (See photo to get an idea of the text)

I visited the Trajan’s market on a Tuesday in January. And It was empty I could take so many amazing pictures and I took my time listening to the audio guide. It took me almost 3 hours to complete the visit. And i went at 2pm so I could experience it in daylight and at night time ao i highly recommend that.

If you have MIC card, its free to visit any time you want. From the first moment I stepped in Rome, Trajan Market was the first place that took my attention even it was night... For months I have visited that area and admired the view all the time. The energy it holds is so soothing for me. And for the first time, I had an opportunity to visit Trajan's Market and sensed it's energy for hours...I had very soothing hours in there, as a person who is in love visiting ancient ruins and locations, I left Mercati di Triano with an intense warmth in my heart and my soul was fed💗🌙 If you follow the corridors, your feet will lead you to a terrace and it has the best view!!! So please don't pass this location, because even though how amazing was it, I didn't see any person around...looking to ancient ruins from that terrace made me feel like I'm in a movie scene, especially if you are also interested in cinematography, don't miss it!!!

Fabulous, and much quieter than other areas of the city. Surprising since the level of preservation is brilliant. Took somewhere close to 2 hours to stroll around, lots of interest inside and out. Accessible by standing at Trajan's Column, look for a set of stairs, go up the stairs and the entry is on the right about 20 yards ahead. Also has a great bookshop/Libreria!

As everyone earlier had noted, less crowds, more history. No logic or set path, explore at your own pace and interest. Entrance fee was €13 per adult to enter, 18 and under are free. We were greeted by friendly staff, they let us know where all the bathrooms were located, be warned though that there were no toilet seats, this applies to the majority of public toilets in Rome. There are several vending machines near the upstairs bathroom; €1.20 for snacks and €0.50 for a 0.5l water. I would highly recommend it, especially if you want to view Roman antiquity without constantly bumping into other tourists.

As others have noted, this is one of the most interesting uncrowded ancient sites in Rome. We were able to explore at our own pace without being jostled along by crowds or group tours. Most of the building is surprisingly intact, and it is easy to get a feel for how business was done there. An added bonus was the presence nearby of the Foro Imperiali, an interesting site in itself which permits easy and no queue entry into the main Forum area.

Is it worth 18€ to see a weird museum before walking around the market ruins? Maybe not. The ruins are fascinating for someone interested in history but even I thought ti myself a few times that I could just take a few pictures after visiting the Monument to the Fatherland because its just across the street. There are beautiful views from the top of the market though, you can walk up to platforms that overlook the city and make for beautiful sprawling panoramic views.

Must see checklist member, Trajan's Market (Latin: Mercatus Traiani, Italian: Mercati di Traiano) is a large complex of ruins in the city of Rome, Italy, located on the Via dei Fori Imperiali, at the opposite end to the Colosseum. The surviving buildings and structures, built as an integral part of Trajan's Forum and nestled against the excavated flank of the Quirinal Hill, present a living model of life in the Roman capital and a glimpse at the restoration in the city, which reveals new treasures and insights about Ancient Roman architecture. Thought to be the world's oldest shopping mall, the arcades in Trajan's Market are now believed by many to be administrative offices for Emperor Trajan. The shops and apartments were built in a multi-level structure and it is still possible to visit several of the levels. Highlights include delicate marble floors and the remains of a library. Construction Trajan's Market was probably built in 100-110 AD by Apollodorus of Damascus,an architect who always followed Trajan in his adventures and to whom Trajan entrusted the planning of his Forum,[and inaugurated in 113 AD.During the Middle Ages the complex was transformed by adding floor levels, still visible today, and defensive elements such as the Torre delle Milizie, the "militia tower" built in 1200. A convent, which was built in this area in the 16th century was acquired by the state in 1885 and became the Goffredo Mameli barracks. This was demolished at the beginning of the twentieth century to restore Trajan's Markets to the city of Rome. We were there on a rainy Monday in November 2018, looking to get away from the crowds. The museum is really nice and new! It’s not a big museum, but the really cool stuff is located outside, once you leave the building. Exploring the markets, rooms and hallways of a 2000 yo building was awesome. I think everyone in the family learned a lot, enjoyed the laid back environment, and got to explore without the crowds. It was worth the admission price.

They were built on the order of Emperor Trajan in the 2nd century AD by his architect Apollodor of Damascus. There were about 150 shops on several levels. The Halls of Trajan are located on Via dei Fori Imperiali, opposite the Colosseum. Their construction required leveling a part of the Quirinal. Located on a hill; together with the basilica, shops and offices, the entire complex consisted of six levels. Although the halls were mostly used for the market, some of the rooms played the administrative role of the emperor. (Translated by Google) Trajan's Market - The ruins of trading buildings on the forum of Trajan in Rome. The five-story shopping complex was built in the years 100-112 by Appolodor of Damascus in the form of terraces on the side of a hill. There were about 150 shops, taverns, eateries, as well as points of free distribution of products to the population. Each shop had an exit (vitrina) to the street. The shops sold spices, fruits, wine, olive oil, fish, silk and other goods from the East. In the middle of the market was Via Biberatica, a street named after the taverns on it. Trayan's market is interesting for its architectural construction using concrete and brick: the basis of the wall was a mixture of concrete with stones, which allowed to increase the height of the structure to five floors; the walls were bricked. The market was separated from the forum of Trajan by a fire wall. In the Middle Ages, the complex was completed with separate buildings, including the Police Tower (c. 1200), and residential buildings, which were demolished in 1924. Intensive excavations of the market were carried out at Mussolini (1930-33). In the 21st century, the remains of the market are museumified. The museum exhibits fragments of marble decoration of other lost constructions of the Trajan forum, discovered during excavations of the 1930s.

Highly recommend! This museum had some nice artifacts and it is a unique experience to be able to walk in the old market. You can imagine what it used to be like in Roman times and walk through the original corridors and tunnels of Trajan’s Market. This museum is included on the MIC card. The bathrooms were nice and clean, just missing anything to dry your hands with. The staff was helpful. Thumbs up!

Marvelous remains of Emperor Trajan's Forum, including a library, shopping arcade, administrative offices and the triumphal column. After the Colosseum, this is maybe the largest still standing ancient structure in the Roman Forum (or better said - Forums). There is a museum inside the Market, accessible only from the Via Quattro November. Not all of the ancient structures remain, however, but what is still standing is shedding light on the administrative and commercial life in the second Century AD. There are also some Medieval additions to the market, like floor levels and a Tower (the tallest structure on Trajan's market).

This a surprisingly large and elaborate museum that has a good audio guide (albeit with a lot of strange first person segments?) and it gives you much closer access to Trajan’s market. Everything is well-organized and has detailed explanations, beautiful models, and is all housed in a historic building. This easy to miss museum is a must for anyone interested in the history of Rome.

(Translated by Google) Visiting this splendid museum (inaugurated in 2007) gives you particular emotions, in fact you find yourself immersed in a world and atmosphere of many centuries ago. This colossal work is characterized by the particular hemicycle shape of the building, which is divided into several floors, and on the large exedra of the Trajan's Forum in front of the hemicycle. The journey through this large museum is particular, since within the Markets, there are various environments with the most disparate shapes connected on the various levels by stairways and cordoned lines. Characteristic is the street "Biberatica" (derived from the Latin Biber or drink), where on the two sides there are various entrances that lead into rooms probably used at the time for various commercial activities. The various reconstructions of ancient works on display are significant, obtained with original fragments and additions that convey the idea of the original work, especially as regards the volumes. The view of the panoramic view towards "Piazza Venezia", the "Torre delle Milizie", the "Palazzo del Grillo" and the "House of the Knights of Rhodes" is very beautiful. (Translated by Google) Rome is beautiful 😀😀😀 Only when we are there, looking at the remaining fragments of the ruins of the ancient city, looking at reconstructions or models, we can see the power of architecture and the greatness that makes a huge impression. Of course, I recommend it because nothing compares to this city - Rome is one of a kind. Now a few words about the situation related to the epidemic, the flight to Rome via Frankfurt, there was no crowd at any airport, but the plane had 80 seats taken. In the city itself, the obligation to wear masks everywhere, the lack of crowds of tourists means that we enter everywhere without queues and we can visit the museum, the Vatican and other tourist attractions without haste. Probably from this weekend the museums will be closed, but I would ask you to check if this is reliable information. I recommend it with all my heart 💕 (Original) Rzym jest piękny 😀😀😀 Dopiero będąc tam, oglądając pozostałe fragmenty ruin po starożytnym mieście, oglądając rekonstrukcje lub modele widzimy potęgę architektury i wielkość, która robi ogromne wrażenie. W samym mieście obowiązek noszenia wszędzie maseczek, brak tłumu turystów powoduje, że wszędzie wchodzimy bez kolejek i bez pośpiechu możemy zwiedzać muzeum, Watykan i inne atrakcje turystyczne. Prawdopodobnie od tego weekendu będą zamknięte muzea ale prosiłabym sprawdzić czy to są wiarygodne informacje. Polecam z całego serca 💕

Vastly Increased in size from 3 years ago with an entire new section with a large number of restored columns. This ancient ruin had centuries of in fill and then another architectural style. So you have ancient ruins on top of which there are medieval bricks and then higher up renaissance arches and finally a modern store built into a 19th century building.

Amazing how little attention this museum and archaeological site receives. I'd add it to my unofficial list of places in Rome to avoid crowds. You get beautiful views from the top terrace towards the Forum and the Vittorio Emanuele memorial. When outside, watch out for the seagulls, they tend to bombard visitors with goo. 🙂 If you want to avoid massive crowds, feel free to skip the usual Forum altogether and just come to the Mercati di Traiano. Similar experience, much less people.
