Tonnarello Scala

Restaurant

👍 Delicious pasta in a lively environment, lots of outdoor and indoor seating. Service was friendly, but extremely slow. On top of a 1 hour wait, we spent about 2 hours here. Great spot if you have time and are looking for a chill spot for dinner and drinks. People often mention pasta, service, good, great, friendly, Rome, restaurant, staff, recommend, delicious,

You'll always have to queue to dine here, especially at peak lunch and dinner times (1-2 hrs queue!). They have a few branches though! This one is the slightly less busy one. If you want a quicker service, come around 3-5pm or just before 12pm. Had fried artichoke, lasagna and tomato sauce pasta with mussels. Loved the fried artichoke, beautifully seasoned and cooked. Very crispy leaves and soft centre. Lasagna was delicious, drizzled with olive oil and sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. We just had to try lasagna when in Rome. The pasta was slightly underwhelming as many mussels were quite small and dry. The actual pasta and sauce was good though. I may revisit if there isn't a massive queue next time.

****Update June 2, 2022**** We came back to Rome as a family and this has been our best meal since we've been back!!! We were there November 26, 2021. Great restaurant in Trastevere! Very short wait but we opted to dine outside. The staff was great and surrounding tables were very friendly. Excellent on all levels and we will definitely go back every time we are in Rome!!

Came here cause of some viral TikTok food videos, and this joint lived up to its expectation. Rich and bright flavors, fresh homemade pastas, probably some of the best I've ever eaten. Definitely recommend. We were lucky there was only a couple of tables ahead of us when we showed up at around 2pm. Staff is friendly and quick.

A wonderful place, I recommend. Good food, located in the center of Rome, with a varied menu and friendly staff. The only minus is the fact that it takes until you can sit at a table, there is always a line of customers. I waited about 40 minutes on Thursday evening. Otherwise a nice place, with good food and moderate to high prices. Our waiter Lloyd was the best !

Amazing experience, The restaurant has indoor & outdoor seating options. The atmosphere is authentic and goes well with the restaurant theme. The menu has vegetarian options. The portions are big and the food tastes amazing. Recommend lasagna, pesto and pizzas. The staff are very welcoming, helpful and the service is very fast. Hakim was of great help to us. Overall great experience!

Great great food with friendly staff. Our server Gian was amazing, it made our first night in Rome feel so welcoming. The meatballs were so soft and juicy, it was nothing like I had in the US. Carbonara and lasagna were exceptional too. When we first saw the long line along the walls, we were overwhelmed but the line moved quickly. We waited about 30 min at prime dinner time (7:30pm) which was not bad at all. I would definitely recommend Tonnarello to my family and friends.

By far the best pasta I have ever had in my life (in the USA and in all of Europe). I am so glad that one of my friends recommended this place because it ended up being my first meal in 1.5 days and it did not disappoint. There is outdoor and indoor seating available and this restaurant is located in the heart of Travestre. Their Cacio E Pepe was DIVINE! The service is definitely a bit slow but it was fine. By far, the best tiramisu (definitely has some custard texture to it) I have ever had! When I returned to the US, I tried to remake it but I couldn’t get it right. 11/10 — highly recommend!

Vidal was amazing. Great service; prompt and attentive. He was great with my toddler offering her coloring pages, pencils and lollipops. Food was delicious. A must visit when in Trastevere in Rome. Family friendly too!

Good place to have lunch, I totally recommend the artichokes and rice balls, they were very delicious. The carbonara was good, very creamy, but slightly salty to my taste.

Looking about a good place to taste some local oroginal Carbonara and Pizza... Usually Restaurants in such places don't meet our expectations.... But NO for Tornarello Scala!! Everything we taste was Amazing! Delicious! Fresh! Hand made! Special Thanks to The waiter Afshin Who help us with our order and what to choose! Also what not miss... We order Pizza and Carbonara... He suggest to take The Brusketes that was Amazing for starter! Everything was Amazing... And prizes was normal. Carbonara 12€ Pizza 12€ Brusketes 9€ (expected to be cheper tbh) Thanks! I will try you again... And again! Just keep the quality above... And the prices like now.

We got lucky, as we stroll in instantly. There were queues for this place. Food is above average. Definitely had better tiramisus in Italy. I’ll skip it if you’re a guru.

I was excited about this place and its Pasta carbonara, but honestly, this pasta is completely overrated. It's not too special or even that tasty. I’ve tried better ones in less tourist areas. It definitely is all about social media; don't fall for it. The rest cute environment and fast and friendly service, maybe other dishes have a better taste, but I won't go back to find out.

This location had a significantly smaller queue compared with its other location, so we got in pretty fast. We had a table outside with a nice view to the street. We had caprese and a fried artichoke as antipasti which were pretty good. However, the main star of the night were the pasta dishes which were excellent! We had the pesto pasta and the meatballs pasta. The staff was also very friendly, so overall we had a very pleasant meal and night.

Lovely experience - friendly staff, delicious food, good location. Carbonara pasta was amazing - large portion ( keep in mind when ordering starters)! Would have loved to return if long in Rome !

Great bruschetta. I especially loved the anchovy one. Pasta Amatriciana was really good. I could taste the fatty guanciale covered beautifully by the strong acidity of the dense tomato sauce. Couldn't be more tasty. All been said about the food, it was the only place asking me to pay for the service. I wasn't familiar with the tipping culture for the service here so I asked the service staff how much it would be at a reasonable price and she said it's 10~14%. It's just a reminder and all.

The food is sensational but the service is too quick! You feel a little bit hurried up by the staff of the place. The rest is really good! We had a carbonara and a pizza 🍕 and artichoke. All super good.

TIRAMISU is the bomb! I think by far the best I’ve tried. Lloyd’s service was lovely! Crispy artichoke is nice too! Can’t comment on pasta because I had better elsewhere.

The food is amazing. The service from Sara and Haider was top notch. The spaghetti and meatballs was delicious and the house wine deserves a special mention too. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.

One of the best meals we had in Rome! We loved the fried mix appetizer and the cacio e Pepe! Patrick was our waiter and we loved him! He was so welcoming and friendly! Would really recommend coming here!

This restaurant was the best reward after a long long day in the Vatican museum. David warmly welcomed us and helped us with our order. Everything tasted great; the pizza, the pasta, the wine…. Make sure you visit this restaurant!!!!

After waiting for about half an hour, we got in. And man, the food was good! We got some salad for starters and then we munched on some carbonara and lasagna with some white wine. That was yummy yumm! Very good! Would recommend it even tho it might be redundant because this is their second restaurant. The first one has an even bigger waiting line/time. Good God they are thriving! But they also deserve it!

We had a perfect meal here. Artichokes for starters and carbonara were the best we ever had. And very reasonably priced. Very nice service too. A place we recommend!

This is one of my favourite restaurants I have tried in Rome, my wife was recommended to visit it and we decided to give it a shot and we were delighted, the service was impeccable, don't let the line up intimidate you, it moves very quick, they are very efficient, once you are seated, the service is quick without sacrificying the quality of the food which is just delicious, or the next thing after delicious. I had the lasagna, and as a lasagna lover, I can tell this has been the best lasagna I have had in my entire life. You absolutely need to stop by, 100% recommendable, you will not regret it.

For the value it is 5 stars. You couldn't get a better spot in Rome for the value. We were very greedy and had the fried mixed starters which was nice but I would order again. Then the cheese and pepper pasta, lasagne and pesto pasta. All very tastey and would recommend them all. The staff were nice and friendly, and I would definitely come back.

We had a great dinner, and only had to wait 15 minutes. Our carbonara was incredible and the tiramisu blew us away! On the service, although there was a huge quee outside we did not feel any pressure from the staff to finish. They have protected the dinning experience incredibly well for such a popular spot. Aldino did a great job to making us feel welcome and enjoyed the evening, his positive energy really brightened up the place. Will definatly try to come here again but with how good it is and the good reviews that it has it will not surprise me if the waiting time becomes the whole evening

This restaurant came recommended to me by my Airbnb owner. They said the pasta is handmade at the restaurant. This meal was so unbelievably delicious. Probably the best meal I ate the entire time I was in Italy. Just go and point at anything on the menu and you'll be satisfied.

Delphine our table waitress was excellent. From a friendly and helpful welcome to good advice on a great white wine and even after lunch digestive spirit and biscuits. She did a wonderful job. The food had great taste and the food was very well priced. Highly recommend Tonnarello. Thank you Delphine for making a difference to dining in Roma.

There was a nice environment inside, it was cozy and the staff was very friendly and attentive always. They could also speak Spanish and English too. The 4 fromaggi pizza was super tasty and the pasta with steamed mussels was amazing too! ( Typical Italian food) Unfortunately at the end, the waitress got confused and gave us the wrong check from another table and not ours, so be sure that you're paying for what you ate. But in terms of food I would definitely come here again.

The pasta was great, and there is less queue than in the same restaurant 200m away. The service was exceptional thanks to Steven (who also talks Spanish!!) and we felt very welcomed by all the staff. If we come back to Rome, sure we will pass by again!

Amazing pasta! Great place to get the authentic and classic Carbonara and a very fresh bruschetta. Very recommended. Adelina is the best waitress and she speaks multiple languages 👌🏻 great service!

Food was pretty good. We were looking for a place that had more than just pizza or sandwiches and this fit the bill. They have several pasta items on the menu, along with salads and pizza. Menu is in 4 different languages. There is another restaurant just like this one a short distance away that always had a much longer queue line. We sat inside and it got pretty warm (with little to no airflow). I would recommend sitting outside.

Probably our favorite restaurant in Rome. We had a reservation so we barely had to wait. The restaurant has a large seating capacity inside. The waitress greeted us warmly as soon as we sat down. We ordered the Artichoke for starters, Meatball in Tomato Sauce Pasta and Amatriciana. The artichoke was nicely roasted and really opened up our appetite. The pasta were served warm in a casserole. They looked quite small but the portions were more generous than we thought. My personal favorite was the meatball pasta. I enjoyed all the textures and the well-seasoned mild tomato sauce, simply delicious! We were quite full already but could not resist trying the Oxtail in Tomato sauce dish. The meat was so tender that it came off the bone immediately. We found that even the celery brought some freshness to the the rich tomato sauce and the mashed potato puree was smooth and buttery in taste. A very well rounded dish.

Delicious food with excellent, friendly service. Large portion size meant we ordered more than we could eat. The pasta dishes were very good, rich sauces and generous portions. Seating on the street was compact and close to the other guests but that is all part of the atmosphere- and you get to be inspired by other people's food orders. A good place to go if you're hungry :)

A great spot in the busy Trastevere district. Not as busy as its sister's location. Food was great but Veronica our hostess was even better. Super cool with great service and a firm handshake! Her tiramisù recommendation was spot on. Overall it was a wonderful dining experience! Highly recommended.

It’s our first time in Italy and Tonnarello definitely made it on our list to try. This place did not disappoint. Gabriel provided amazing service and made our experience perfect. We may eat dinner here tomorrow, everything was just too good!!

The iconic pasta in Rome. It was well worth the trip to come here. Service fast and friendly. Our waitress, Adelina friendly and smiling. Carbonara and Amatriciana perfectly. Pasta fresh and springy with a delicious sauce. Yes, good food and house wine is a recipe for a super evening. But not everything was perfect (according to my wife, she prefers meat to pasta). She said it was not worth ordering the chicken. It was average and she has eaten many better. Well, next time she will order the classic pasta ;)

  • 5/5 Alex L. 1 year ago on Google
Our landlady recommended us this place and were lucky to get a seat instantly on a busy weekday. Ordered the lasagna, carbonara and lamp chop - they were home cooked, hearty and delicious, reasonably priced too. There were a long queue but it moved and service here was very good. Highly recommended!

We came here by chance and are so glad that we did. The Cacio e Pepe was next level. Service was impeccable. Our host David was a bag of fun. He made good conversation about our country of New Zealand and was very knowledgeable about our 12yr old son’s favourite movie. David made the experience a very memorable one. If we had another night in Rome we would definitely return for more amazing pasta and excellent service. Hats off to the establishment and hospitality.
