Beautiful church! Cloister was 3 euros entrance, only open till 4:30 unfortunately but the rest of the church is open longer. Security in front which you breeze through. Lax on tourists’ dress but be respectful. One of my favorite churches in Rome to visit ! Magnificent church - true home of the Catholic Church in Rome. The church itself is a great visit. Don’t miss the ancient and gigantic obelisk, from there the baptistery and if you are so inclined, across the street are preserved the stairs on which Christ ascended to Pilate. Constantine’s mother Helen brought them to Rome. The devout ascend them on their knees.

The Basilica di San Giovanni, also known as the Basilica of Saint John Lateran, is one of Rome's most significant and historic churches. As the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, it holds a special place in Catholicism. This grand basilica is renowned for its intricate architecture and ornate interior, making it a must-visit destination for those exploring the rich religious and cultural heritage of Rome.

This major church is the Cathedral Church of Rome, and by this virtue the seat of the Pope (not St. Peter's basilica.) It is the oldest Christian church in Rome, and it is spectacular, both outside as well as inside. The best part is that it is free to enter. Do not miss this one!

Probably the most magnificent church/basilica in Rome. The size of it is just incredible and the art (both in paintings and sculptures) is out of this world. Like all the others it is free to enter and make sure you visit it. Just stay and sit there for 30-45 minutes and enjoy it.

This is one of the nicest Basilica’s in Rome, it’s stunning. The colonnades are gorgeous, the artwork, stone work and museum is beautiful. It’s fairly large with lots to see and do. The artwork, statues, artifacts and religious clothing is very well preserved and displayed. Its collection is impressive, the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend checking out this Basilica, it’s a great place for families and children of all ages.

It was beautiful. The ceiling was designed by Michelangelo and the statues of the twelve apostles were made by students of Bernini. Swing by if you have some time, it's not as crowded as other more popular churches in Rome and admission is free.

An amazing interior! The 12 sculptures of the Apostles inside are true masterpieces. I enjoyed this basilica much more than St Peter's. Really recommend to go there and also see the obelisk next to it - the oldest one in Rome.

Enormous Basilica worth a detour even if you're not in the area. This is the main cathedral in Rome and acts as the Pope's seat in Rome. It was first built in 324 and is one of the oldest surviving Catholic churches in the world. Parts of it were destroyed and rebuilt during its history. Its main entrance is in front of the plaza and while it's free to visit, you'll have to pass a security check with metal detectors. Once inside, you'll be greeted by an amazing array of paintings and sculptures. There are 12 niches housing 12 sculptures, one of each apostle.

It is absolutely beautiful in spite of most of the art being moved to the Vatican. A hidden jewel in Rome. Free entrance. There are no lines. Just be aware of the mass schedules and other events when it's not possible to access the area closer to the altar.

This church is the oldest and highest ranking of the four major papal basilicas as well as one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome, holding the unique title of "archbasilica". It’s a magnificent expression of both religious dedication and architectural splendor. This cathedral invites you on a captivating journey through centuries of faith and art, with a grand facade adorned with intricate sculptures and majestic columns, creating a beautiful blend of art and spirituality. I was genuinely say that I haven't encountered a place of worship as grand as this and was lucky to be there on time to attend a Mass. It is also free entry.

Amazing interior, lots of rich murals and sculptures. One of the four major basilicas and contrary to appearances, it is the most important church in the world, even more important than the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, she was appointed Mother and Head of the churches of the city and the world. Inside it hides, among others many tombs of popes, decorated with beautiful carvings.

We went there after reading that Pope has his chair there for service. Make no mistake, this is most impressive church in Rome. I was surprised that not many people were there. We took Bird scooters and got there in 8 minutes from Colosseum. Church is slightly smaller than St Peter but impressive nevertheless.

The was the papal palace until the mid 1200’s when the papacy moved to Avignon. In the 1500’s it was converted to the church that it is now. On either side of the central nave are statues of the disciples that must be 5 or 6 metres tall. Incredible ceiling and murals and the cloister is worth a look.

This church is great, make sure you visit when it's doors are open. Free entry, aside from the garden or the steps. I think there's extra charge for that. No shorts or bare shoulders but the church was full of people in shorts, men and women. A basic security check before entry. Nice intricate details, apostle statues, paintings. Really impressive.

An impressive testament of faith. Free entrance as its still a church, with an immense historical baggage. The church is the oldest and highest ranking of the four major papal basilicas as well as one of the Seven Pilgrim Churches of Rome, holding the title of "archbasilica", as it is mentioned in the historical records. Originally founded in 324, it is the oldest public church in the city of Rome, and the oldest basilica of the Western world.

One of the oldest Basilicas in the world. From the minute you step inside you will just be amazed. Beautiful ceiling, amazing paintings and sculptures. Walk around and enjoy every corner of the place. Make sure you add it to your itinerary and from there you can start your day towards the colosseum and the Roman forum.

The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano, standing with an aura of sacred antiquity, is a breathtaking testament to both religious devotion and architectural grandeur. This cathedral, being the oldest and ranking first among the four Papal Basilicas of Rome, is not just a monument but a journey through centuries of faith and art. Its imposing façade, adorned with intricate sculptures and majestic columns, beckons visitors into a world where art and spirituality intertwine seamlessly. Once inside, the awe-inspiring interior captivates the senses. The ornate ceiling, a masterpiece, stretches over a vast nave that tells stories of religious history through its opulent decorations and detailed frescoes. The grandeur of the golden coffered ceiling reflects the basilica's heavenly aspirations, while the magnificent altar, a focal point of devotion, exudes a sense of divine presence. Each chapel within the basilica is a treasure trove of artistic expression, housing masterpieces from renowned artists, contributing to the basilica's reputation as a museum of ecclesiastical art. The harmony of light and shadow, created by the clever use of windows and lamps, adds to the mystical ambiance, inviting contemplation and reverence. The Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano is not just a building; it's a profound experience. It captures the essence of religious art and architecture, leaving visitors with a sense of peace and an appreciation for the profound impact of faith on human creativity. This basilica is a must-visit for not just pilgrims but for anyone who wishes to witness the glorious intersection of history, art, and spirituality.

The basilica is wonderful. Until 1305, it was the main seat of the papers. Inside there are relics in the form of the skulls of Saint Peter and Paul. The entrance is decorated with huge sculptures of Jesus, John the Apostle, John the Baptist and other apostles. Please remember to wear appropriate clothing before entering the basilica.

A significant site full of history! From the impressive doors that once belonged to the Roman Curia and the magnificent statues inside to the peaceful atrium of the cloister where there is an exhibition of artifacts dating prior to the existing church is a place not to miss!

This is really the Pope’s Church and you are actually in the Vatican. From the Chair = cathedra, we get the word Cathedral. The entrance is FREE. For my American friends: The CDC vaccination card is accepted everywhere instead of the European Green Pass

It's definitely worth visiting this enormous and magnificent cathedral that is free to enter. It was a bit overwhelming and hard to fathom how big it actually is!!! It was first built in 324 AD and is one of the oldest surviving Catholic churches in the world and we were surprised to learn that it acts as the Pope's seat and is the true home of the Catholic Church in Rome.

The amazing church where the Popes lived for over 10 centuries. Don’t miss the Mess here with the graceful sound of the biggest organ in Rome. One secret in this church that not many people know. If you and your friend can hear and call each other through the columns. It seems you're calling on the phone. Don't miss it.

The "arcibasilica", because it's the second biggest after the S.Peter's Basilica in Vatican, the biggest of the four major papal basilicas in Rome. It's simply majestic and breathtaking. Don't miss it.

I don't understand why Rome's cathedral doesn't attract more people. The church is large and beautiful. a very impressive ceiling. The church is really worth a visit. one thing that surprises me is that the area outside the church is just allowed to fall into disrepair.

This great Basilica is definitely worth seeing on your trip to Roma. Since it is part of the Vatican you will need to pass thru security which is a breeze. They have the original alter of St Peter and Paul and part of the last supper table. Definitely worth a visit on your holiday

The statues of the apostles are unique. The very feeling inside when one enters is unique. The place should definitely be put on the list of sites to visit when you are in Rome. We happened to be in service on a Sunday and were not able to take a detailed look.

One of rhe majestic basilicas of rome, known as the ex papal residency before the vatican was built, this place has a lot of history and rich architecture to it. It is also a place for political gatherings when meetings are held or aometime even music events because of the huge space in the fron and sides of this basilica. Definitely a must visit place if you're in Rome!

It is the papal archbasilica. In other words this is the official cathedral of the Pope (not st. Peter's). A simple but magnificent structure. Consecrated in 324 ad, making it the oldest public church in the city of Rome and the oldest basilica in the west. It is in proximity to the holy stairs another must visit place ( if u r religious)
