Originally the fountain was made to serve as a source of potable water before the age of indoor plumbing. The four rivers are represented by the four marble gods with flowers and wildlife around them that are typical for continents where rivers are located. You can walk around the fountain and see something happening from any angle. It’s a lot going on there. Great Baroque masterpiece and a central piece of Piazza Navona.

Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi is a fountain in the famous Piazza Navona. It was made between 1648 - 1655 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X. An exceptional work. In recent years, they have been very strict about resting tired legs by the well.

A large and central square, in the ancient quarter of Rome and one of the popular tourist sites in the city. Many agree that Piazza Navona is the most beautiful square in Rome. In the square you can see three fountains, the main one of which is the fountain of the four rivers: the Danube, the Rio della Plata, the Ganges and the Nile. In the center of the fountain stands the obelisk (a narrow and tall monument), which was moved to the square from the forum. Originally, the obelisk was brought from Egypt by order of one of the popes, to symbolize the divine light and the victory of the church over paganism. Besides this fountain, you can also see the Moro fountain, on the south side and the Neptune fountain, on the north side of Piazza Navona. This is an area for vintage shopping, antiques, locally made products, workshops and the like. It is possible to find items that are not found anywhere in the world, and at more affordable prices that can be bargained for.

The fountain is in the Piazza Navona. There was a Christmas bazaar village ay the time of our visit and the atmosphere was very festive.

Rome at night is something to see. We went site seeing in rome after 1 am and boy was it beautiful. One of the iconic locations we visited is the fountain. It was beautiful with lights beaming and the water flowing. Plus, there were no crowds. A must visit at night.

A worthy fountain to visit on any trip to Rome! In the summer there is little shade and many people so have your sunscreen and water! As a bonus there is one of Romes great water spigots in this square to allow you to fill up your water bottle!!

Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) is a fountain in the Piazza Navona in Rome, Italy. It was designed in 1651 by Gian Lorenzo Bernini for Pope Innocent X whose family palace, the Palazzo Pamphili, faced onto the piazza as did the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone of which Innocent was the sponsor.

Beautiful place to visit, 3 beautiful fountains, nice place to sit, beautiful place to listen to live music, food is expensive and not great quality, but you can forgive that just to look at the fountains.

A must see of course while in Rome. It looks big online or in pictures but it's in a tight place inbetween buildings thus there is a crowd there. Suggest going early in the morning if you want some room.

This fountain is a must-see in Rome after Fontana de Trevi. The Fiumi fountain is located in the center of Navona square. Amazing beauty and incredible work by the famous Bernini. Better come when it’s close to the sunset, then the fountain is fully seen in sun’s light. There are a lot of cafes and restaurants around, so my advise is to come, to sit, to order a cup of coffee or delicious Italian pasta and enjoy a wonderful view. 🧡

You must definitely visit this square and this fountain in particular. It is beautiful and it can't be admired by pictures alone. Also, if the weather permits, there's really good gelato at the edge of the square.

The fountain in the middle of the busy piazza navona. This fountain is as old as Trevi and just as ornate with really great sculptures but unfortunately it is playing second fiddle vs the Trevi.

Beautiful fountain in the square. You must see all the sides to fully appreciate the beauty of this fountain. Beware the hand shakers, the flying helicopter and laser hockers, and those attempting to sell you or your loved one a rose as that gets a little tiresome.

The Fiumi Fountain is a delightful spot to visit. I was fortunate enough to experience it in December, and the added bonus of a small Christmas market heightened its already magical charm.

Quite a beautiful and interesting fountain to see! Make sure to check it out if you are near. As a nice addition since it was close to the holidays, there were many "tents" in the Piazza around, offering quite a few interesting festive products.

This is one of our best sites to visit and have a bite to eat. You can not go wrong selecting either of the restaurants as the food is out of this world! And, watching the world go by while eating and enjoying a wonderful glass of wine is #1 on our list during vacations.

Free to visit and the church is open as well. A lot of restaurants around. The tree fountains are always interesting a beautiful to look at during any time the day. I recommend to do a little of Wikipedia/booklet reading to spot interesting details:)

A beautiful fountain, we visited at night and there were very few people. Looked spectacular lit up at night, we grabbed a drink from a nearby bar and sat and listened to the sound of the fountain. Bellissimo!

A beautiful, albeit grandiose, baroque fountain in the middle of Piazza Navona. This is one of the most famous fountains in Rome and for a good reason. it is beautifully executed, very large and in a grand setting of one of the most beautiful plazas in the world. A ton of tourists around, at all times of day and night. Lots of pickpockets and scammers as well, so mind your stuff and never ever hand anyone your camera to take a picture of you.

Beautiful fountain, of course! Watch for peddlers who foist thier goods on you. There's many tourists, so a good picture may be hard to capture or have time to wait for the perfect time.

Not super crowded, touristic but trully beautiful. I guess the best hours to visit - early korning or late at night. For a first time visitors very recommend to read about history of this fountain in relation to a church next to it - it is trully amusing! The meaning of sculptures and the cheekiness of authors is pure pearl 😊

This is a peace of art! The meaning of that is the four rivers of the world if you like the four corners of the statue.

Beautiful fountain to visit day or night. It does not get as crowded as other places so it is enjoyable throughout the day.

A beautiful moderate sized fountain in a more open and less crowded square in the evening. There are a few restaurants around the square. The fountain looks other worldly lit up at night.

The most impressive fountain of the ones in Piazza Navona, and one of the most beautiful ones in Rome. Definitely worth a stop during your visit!

This fountain- and really the entire plaza surrounding it- are beautiful and worth a visit while in Rome. The sculpting on the fountain is very impressive, and the area around it is bustling with tourists, shops, restaurants, and performers. I recommend you come by this area if you’re touring Rome!

Great work of art by Bernini. Full of symbolism about the papic dominion over 4 continents. Each statue a river and a continent. Nile for Africa, Ganges for Asia, Danube for Europe, Rio de la Plata for America. They all bring their riches to Rome...

The Fiumi Fountain is another beautiful fountain located in Rome. It was designed by the famous Baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and was completed in the 17th century. The fountain is located in the Piazza Navona and features a Roman obelisk surrounded by four sculptures representing the four major rivers of the world at the time: the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube, and the Rio de la Plata. Each sculpture is uniquely detailed and is meant to represent the power of these great rivers. The Fiumi Fountain is a masterpiece of Baroque art and is considered one of the most beautiful fountains in Rome. It is not well known as the Trevi, so it's less crowded.
