Wow! Some exceptional ruins that give great insight into ancient life. Would recommend allocating at least 2-3 hours here as there is a lot to see. There were a couple entrances. We used the one by the amphitheater and were able to get tickets there. €16 per person for a group of 2. Definitely would recommend!

(Translated by Google) Wonderfully preserved historic site. Shocking, especially the sight of the victims cast in plaster. On August 24, the lava plug that closed the crust of Mount Vesuvius for millennia unexpectedly threw terribly, with awful force, at the clear sky of Campania. The volcano shot the rubble to a mile high and the top of the mountain exploded, accompanied by a deafening roar. The sky was darkened by a dark cloud formed from volcanic ash, which then billowed over the scene of the disaster for three days. Pompeii, which had been flowering until then, was covered with a layer of ash 7-8 meters thick, and was buried by its inhabitants in a continuous shower of stones ranging from peas to hazelnuts. (Original) Csodálatosan fennmaradt történelmi hely. Megdöbbentő, főleg a gipszbe öntött áldozatok látványa. 79. augusztus 24-én a Vezúv kráterét évezredekig elzáró lávadugó váratlanul, iszonyú erővel dobódott ki Campania derült egére. A tűzhányó kilométernyi magasságba lövellte a kőtörmeléket, és fülsiketítő égzengés kíséretében felrobbant a hegy csúcsa. Az eget elsötétítette a vulkáni hamuból képződött sötét felhő, amely azután három napig gomolygott a katasztrófa színhelye fölött. Az addig virágzó Pompeiit 7–8 méter vastag hamuréteg fedte be, s a borsószemnyitől a mogyorónagyságig terjedő kövek szüntelenül hulló zápora temette el lakosaival együtt.

We bought tickets online ahead of time, which was nice to skip the line, but I'm not sure we got the best deal. We spent 16€ per ticket, no guide or anything. We loosely followed a 5-hour path that we found using a map online, and we definitely didn't see anything, it is huge! We visited on a Tuesday and a lot of the houses were closed, which was a bummer. It was also very crowded (and hot) in August. They have filling stations for water bottles which was helpful. There really aren't many informational signs, so that was a bummer since we didn't have a tour or audio guide. This was still a neat experience! Everyone should visit and see what life was like in 79 AD here.

This was a wonderful experience. We went here for a day trip and we weren’t disappointed as this place is genuinely one of the most interesting places I’ve ever visited. Firstly, this place is absolutely enormous and is well preserved. There’s plenty to see, from the forum to the theatre. I’d recommend spending a whole day here, and getting an audio guide which will allow you to take things at your own pace. There is also a lovely cafe here which does a really nice sandwich. If you’re looking for a truly unique day out, then I’d absolutely recommend this unique place.

E' stupendo.

A place with history. It is a wide area for exploring. Makes sense to find dream locations from the map before the trip, or consider taking a guide. But it is a nice and interesting walk to see and feel the antique town with all more glamorous and more regular places. Somehow even kids found it interesting.

Stunning location, make sure to take at least half a day to explore. You can follow the map but without guide you might not get a lot of history out of it. The buildings are very well preserved and this is a beautiful location. There is only one place to buy food and drinks and very overpriced - would recommend to bring your own if you don't want to queue and overpay. Tickets for entrance are 16 euro and a tour guide is €20 (small group official guide from tourist office). The train there should be around 3-4 euros. Don't overpay doing a tour, there might be some queue in high season but the skip the lines is a scam, you can just buy the ticket online and get there via public transport cheap and easy. When you enter make sure to first go to the left (thermal baths) before going up as many "famous" drawings are here. If it's hot, be aware there is not a tremendous amount of shade available.

Our visit to archeological site of Pompeii was much more impressive and awe-inspiring than I had imagined. There is so much to see and learn, ideally, you'd need several days to see everything! If like us you're there for only one day though, make sure to join a guided tour. We did, paying around €15 per person (if shared by 8 visitors) and it was well worth it!!! Our (official) guide was fantastic and really helped us get the most out of our visit. Highly recommended.

It’s always amazing to go back in time and learn about the history around the world. This site overall was very well preserved, however, going to a site like this I assumed there would be more information available through out, informing individuals of what each item was and talking about the history. It just seemed there were a bunch of run down buildings and you had to come up with a thought as to what the building was for, and what the items were, etc.. the only way to truly have information was to buy an audio guide(semi-budget friendly) or a tour guide (not budget friendly).

We went with a two - hour guide tour. The tour was very nice. The guide is very knowledgeable and patient. We have seen a lot of things in the 2 hours. But make sure prepare enough if you come in summer. It is extremely hot here. Bring your ice water, hat, Sun cream, umbrella… etc. There is only one cafe in the entire park. Also make sure bring some snacks.

Beautiful archaeological park but please BE AWARE that they will close all villas and interesting places at 4 pm for absolutely NO REASON. When I asked why they told me to "ask the park". They even claimed that it says on their website but couldn't show me where. There is little or no information about the highlights on the official app which is also non user friendly and practically useless. The park is 5 stars and it is totally worth visiting. Don't buy the audio guide as it is not worth it. If you prefer, taking an english speaking guide is a good option as they are very knowledgeable and friendly. The staff working for the park however is careless and plain rude to the visitors. This is typical South Italy but somehow I had a hope that being such an important historical place things would be different. Bring water and don't bring bigger backpack than a purse - you will have to lock it at the entrance for free and then go all the way back and claim it. There are water taps all over the park so you can refill your bottle but it's not cold water.

An amazing sightseeing that was always on my list to visit. Parking across the street, costed 10 euros for the full day (closes at 19h00). Group tours from 15 euros per person, private I didn't ask but I assume negotiable. One can easily explore the site just with the maps provided at the ticket office, I downloaded a GPS enabled audio app on top. Don't skip the indoors exhibition on the way to the exit, perhaps the best part of the tour!

Lots of history but is overshadowed by thousands of tour groups shuffling around. Don’t pay for a tour guide unless that’s what you’re desperate to do, get a map and explore on your own! Way cheaper and more fun. Tickets are free on the first Sunday of every month 🎟

Fantastic place to understand Roman past. Well preserved monument. You can buy the tickets at the main entrance to the park and you can also store bags for free. Do not buy tickets at the outlet about train station. It's €2 expensive. They also offer bag storage but for €5 a bag regardless of the size

Its beautiful site. It is maintained very well. You can learn about Roman history. Guided tour could be good but they make it fast. So if you are really interested in history better buy books which you can read at your pace. Otherwise there are information boards at every place on site. Its good to start early in morning. We went there early morning and there was no queue at all. So you can buy tickets on the spot too.

Pompeii is an amazing site of historic interest, the excavations are incredibly well preserved, the layout of the town still intact and the amphitheatre was stunning. One thing to take into consideration is just how huge it is! You definitely need a full day if you want to see it all, and you’d still struggle! We didn’t use a guide as I prefer to explore by myself and it was still very impressive this way, Take a water bottle as you can fill these up from a few water fountains spotted around the site and it does get very hot!

(Translated by Google) Magical place! To visit with a guide accredited by the park. Today Salvatore accompanied us and introduced us to the city which at the time of the eruption, 79 AD, had 20,000 inhabitants. Thanks to Salvatore, a highly experienced guide (he told us that he has been walking the basalt of the ancient streets of Pompeii for 40 years), we discovered the taverns, the shops, the ovens, the agora, the court, the theaters, the houses of the patricians. Wonderful. It is impossible (if you have not studied before) to understand the signs of the grooves at the entrance to the shops, of the holes on the sides of the basalt pavement, of the white stones set in the main streets, and again, to recognize the millstones and shapes for the loaves in the ancient ovens ... and more. We visited Pompeii in this strange August 2020, at the time of Covid, and for this we were able to enjoy the view in peace, there were 2,000 in the archaeological park, when normally up to 20,000 people are allowed. The secret of the conservation of Pompeii are the ash and the pumice doped by Vesuvius at the time of the eruption. Its great charm is that there is still much to discover, a perennial archaeological excavation that will still give us wonders. A must visit if you are in the area. (Original) Luogo magico!

(Translated by Google) Well what about. One of the largest archaeological sites in Italy. Mandatory stop for those passing through Campania. Not being an expert I don't comment on the importance of the site. As a layman on the subject, I can guarantee that it is suggestive even for non-experts. Special mention to the organization, flawless despite the large turnout. Sore notes: there are no shelters from the sun (apart from the houses) so it is advisable to bring a hat to protect your head and sunscreen and water. There are some fountains but infested with wasps (something can be done about it in my opinion).

So much to learn about the life of Pompeii. You could spend an entire day here and they have recently discovered another 150 acres (approximately) of buried ruins. The walkways are all unleveled cobblestone so be careful and bring good walking shoes as we almost twisted our ankle a couple of times not watching where we step. There are coffee shops and lots of street vendors outside the walls of the ruins.

Took part of a guided tour of Vesuvius and Pompeii. Definitely recommend the guided tour over going on your own. Such a historic place. A week after visiting and I am still trying to get accustomed to the feeling that I was a part of a place that is over two thousand years old. If you get the chance, take your time and walk around the park and just feel like you lived there, or walked out your door and enjoy the views all around. You can't help but notice Vesuvius in the background.

It is one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and certainly the largest I have visited. Entrance costs 16 euros per person without a guided tour. After entering, the option of a two-hour guided tour is offered with the cost of 20 euros per person. We chose a guided tour and our guide was Mr. Federico, who despite his age, had a lot of stamina and was very willing to show us around as many sights as possible. The tour lasted 3 hours and we stayed another 2 hours to see the important sights we didn't see with the tour guide. Estimate that for a short tour of the archaeological site you need 4-5 hours and you must wear sneakers. It is impossible to see all the sights of Pompeii in one day, so it would be a good idea to make a list of which ones you want to see the most

Great archeological site, must visit! We chose to roam the site ourselves with audio guides and neglected to join a guided tour (despite the service clerk at the ticket sale booth tried to convince us to join a group and even lied to us when insisting that there weren't any signs or numbers at the ruins and that it was too complicated to just use the plan ...). Anyhow, spent four hours waking around and saw a lot of interesting things.

This place is absolutely the best thing to do if you're staying at Naples. It's an hour train ride away, tickets are like $29 to get in, we didn't do a tour guide and it was very nice and a pleasant walk in through the past. Doing a YouTube guided tour after you wonder around the town is pretty cool too! Highly recommend. Would go again.

What an incredible experience - everyone needs to visit here! I'm not sure how long one would need to spend here to see everything... but it would be incredible to spend multiple days here exploring. We visited as part of a cruise excursion and it was fascinating. Learning about eateries and bakeries, homes, the bath houses, the modern amenities, etc. It was an incredible opportunity to get to visit and to learn more. I will be back someday!

Great piece of history with well preserved buildings! If you don't take a guide - I would advise you to take at least the audio guide - otherwise you would be looking at a bunch of rocks without understanding the meaning behind. Plan at least 2,5 hours, take enough water and walk through the streets of this ancient city - you won't be disappointed and the entrance ticket is worth every cent!

  • 5/5 Robert H. 3 years ago on Google
Absolutely incredible. Even if you have no interest in history you cannot fail to be impressed by Pompeii. You are literally walking through history and seeing how people of all backgrounds lived 2,000 years ago. Download the really helpful English guidebook from their website before you go.

The place is awesome, and we can't really imagine the size of it, without visiting it.....a day might not be enough is you really visit everything.... we spent 6 hours, and we were exhausted although a lot of places were closed to public....it seems Pompei has a lot more to offer, and I personally find that the way the site is organised could be a lot better, as explanations are scarce, and the audio-guide is less than practical. Actually, in the current situation, and knowing what we know after today's visit, I'd probably go for a second day, targeting places that we did not sufficiently spent time exploring, or even missed. I think that with the millions of people who come every year to see this mythical site, they could spend more money to make it more customers friendly, and probably interactive. The audio-guide is outdated .

  • 2/5 Vojta C. 3 years ago on Google
Don't get me wrong Pompeii is beautiful ancient city, however you will not see it as you expected. Not sure why, but most of the city was closed, many sectors where people walked before are now closed. For 16 EUR you can walk bunch of main roads and look around, not much else. You will see more steel gates, doors and blockades then population of Naples. Do not expect some info signs let alone in English. You can buy extra audio guide or fall into fake unofficial guide trap - stranger that is flattering you at the entrance.

  • 5/5 Ryan D. 3 years ago on Google
Had high expectations. The audio guide with gos tracking that helped guide you though the huge site was essential. Do ask for the ones with GPS as this made all the difference. Suggest having some headphones to connect to the audio guide, standard headphone connection on the phones we had. Absolutely fascinating, we spent almost 6hrs here. Suggest taking a small bag with snacks and water bottle. Plenty of places to refill water bottle and there is a cafe / shop on-site. We went during Covid-19 restrictions so some areas were shut but we still saw loads plus the site was quieter than normal so that was a benefit. Pre-book to miss the queues. Easy to get train there from Naples Garibaldi station.

We visited here as part of a guided tour and the whole experience from start to finish was incredible , there truly is no other place on earth like it !! To stroll through the many buildings, some preserved some simple ruins was superb.

Get ready first, comfortable shoes, water, sunscreen, want to walk and enter a magical place. I recommend, it is unmissable !!! This is an amazing site. Only had a half day to tour, probably needed at least 3 days! I have known the story and history since I was a kid, but to see it up close is something else! Had an amazing guide (Fabio). Very sad to see the destruction and death brought on by Vesuvius. In the restaurant, we had some awesome Margherita Pizza! Very historic site. Fascinating ruins of Pompeii! Best to be on the alert for pick pockets!

Truly amazing! Great historical experience, left me in awe. The ruins are carefully excavated, the frescoes even remain! Tour guide explained about the city which underwent an earthquake not long before the volcanic eruption. Streets are a little uneven (obviously) so walk carefully, but what an experience! They have the plaster casts of people, some pottery and even most of a chariot.

  • 5/5 Susie 2 years ago on Google
Incredible to see preserved architecture, personal items and artwork from 2000+ years ago. Sobering and frightening to see the body casts, but really makes you think "Carpe Diem"! Amazing to go back in time and see even the cart marks in the stone ground where the market carts travelled.

Ruins of a pre-historic city that was destroyed by eruption of volcano from a nearby mountain. The ruins are very easy to access but be careful while visiting them with small children. Not recommended for children on prams as it is almost impossible to move with baby carriers because of big and uneven stones and stairs. However for young people it is not difficult to move at all.

Spent the day at Pompeii. It was a very enjoyable and informative walk through the ruins. Learned about the lifestyle of the people who use to live here in the past. Saw what remained of this long ago civilization. Did not get a chance to go to mount Vesuvius, but will hike up next time when I’m in Italy. I recommend everyone to come here and see what life was like in the distant past.

Incredible ruins! Like stepping back in time two millennia!! WAY bigger than my impression prior to visiting. Amazingly well preserved! Got lost in the city for a few hours, but could have easily spent a full day or more! Would love to return with a guide to better understand what exactly I was looking at. But also a cool experience just to wander through!

  • 5/5 Minos F. 2 years ago on Google
Amazing place! You need a full day to walk through all roads in the ancient city ruins. Staying in the modern city is not too nice but a train from Napoli or Rome is easy to take. It might take some time to get you there from Rome but it is totally worth it. It was the highlight of my recent visit in Italy.

  • 5/5 Caroline P. 1 year ago on Google
I cannot tell you how much this meant to me. I have wanted to visit Pompeii since the late 1970s and was not disappointed. It exceeded my expectations, in fact. Although we only did the southern half of the site there was so much to see. So many walls still standing. So many preserved murals. So much excavation still going on. I could almost see the bustle of the ancient town. The cobbled streets have ruts in them from cart wheels! There are grooves in the shop doorways where the doors would have slid open! Our guide obviously loved the site and its history so the commentary was very informative. I hope to go back and see more some day soon.

If you’re in the Naples area it’s a must see. You get to see the remains of an ancient city destroyed by a volcanic eruption and it looks exactly like what the pictures show. It’s a descent big place and theres a lot of walking involved although it seemed most people only hit up the highlights as opposed to walking and seeing every corner. Vesuvius in the backdrop was also quite beautiful. I’d recommend about half a day to see this.

Pompeii is an absolute must when visiting Naples. I've been there now the second time and still haven't seen remotely everything there is to discover. On many structures are qr codes which you can scan to get audio background information. If your budget allows it, I would recommend a guide though: The area is so vast that you can easily miss important attractions. A guide can provide you the little details and background stories that eventually allow you to make the past alive again with the power of imagination. Without that you see just ruins. Make sure that you take sun protection with you and may choose an hour where the sun impact isn't at it's peak. You should also be in a good physical condition if you plan to walk all the side.

  • 5/5 Adam W. 1 year ago on Google
Fantastic archaeological site! So much to see and not enough time (if you go in summer it's way too hot to spend more than 3 hours). If you want to experience it properly make sure to take a packed lunch as there is no food to buy there.

  • 5/5 Superskeleton98 11 months ago on Google
Interesting ruins. Definitely worth getting a tour because the ruins are huge and it's easy to get lost. Also the guide will be able to provide information about the history. Our tour was Pompeii and Herculaneum, which was excellent and definitely recommended if short on time, even if it meant for a long day with few stops.

What an incredible experience to be able to walk into the past like this!! We did this as part of a tour with Mt. Vesuvius, and it was just breathtaking to see the history come alive! There is so much to see, and i was really happy we had a tour guide bring us around to explain stuff!

Amazing place, so much to see, it's huge, far bigger than I realised but so much history to soak up and see. Definitely worth a visit, make sure you have comfortable shoes as there is a fair bit of walking to do.

Truly an amazing place to experience! We had a tour guide who explained what life was like before Mt Vesuvius erupted. You can walk these ancient streets where they lived not unlike we do now. You can see the ruins of houses, baths, and even shops down these streets. They have plenty of spots for souvenirs at the entrance, too! If you get the chance to go, I highly recommend it!

Good to buy tickets ahead and bring food. The site opens at 9 and the food places right outside the gate basically opened at 9 also. Hot, little shade, few signs to guide you, and it is a large site, very uneven ground. Not all areas will be open every day.

  • 4/5 Cristian G. 1 year ago on Google
It was a privilege to come here. The history this place carries is unbelievable; the city is so well preserved it id easy to get lost imagining what it was like hundreds of years ago. The online booking experience could’ve been better but other than that, it was spectacular. The parking prices were decent and within a small walking distance, the food stalls and toilet facilities across were also really good.

Lot of history here. Great place to visit. Not too much shade, you will get lots of sun on a hot day. Lots of walking. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Some areas one has to walk through dirt roads. Lot of people.

An incredible experience if you are interested in history, architecture or just want a glimpse into the past. The size and quantity of things to see in this excavation site is truly impressive. City streets abound, complete with amphitheatres, shops, homesteads, courtyards, frescoes, plazas, and of course the famous forms of some of those who died during the volcanic eruption that buried an entire city under 16 metres of ash and volcanic material. You could spend days visiting this site, but a half or full day would keep you very busy with plenty to see. I recommend a good guide to provide some of the history and details about Pompeii, and to really bring what you are seeing alive in your mind. An amazing experience, i just wish I had more time there.

I did a tour around this amazing site. Unfortunately 2 hours really wasn't enough time to see it all but at least we saw the highlights. Visiting this unique place should be a mandatory lesson for everyone. Ticket price 19€ considering huge amount of exhibitions and area of the park is not high. You should reserve min 4 hours to have quick preview of major points, 6 hours is fair enough to see all points that should be visited. Best idea is to mark all most important points on the map and prepare a draft plan of your visit day before. Also take some water. There is a point with snacks and drinks in park, also few toilets.

We had a guided tour through the site. It was raining so it was not very crowded. This worked in our favor as we were able to see the main areas without much wait time. It is so much to see here. If you have the opportunity to visit, I strongly recommend it. Wear comfortable walking shoes and plan sufficient time to explore.

Amazing and interesting as expected. We had a great guide to take us around. Then we followed the map in our own time to see the things we wanted to see after the guide. Plenty of opportunities for refreshments and toilets around the site. Plenty of cafes and opportunities to purchase gifts and memorabilia. Pompeii town has plenty of cafes and bars for a sit down after the tour.

Fascinating ruins of Pompeii. We spent 4 hours there like a blink of an eye and we didn’t even see it all. Amazing experience! We didn’t buy tickets in advance and only waited a few minutes in the queue. My only advice is to wear comfortable footwear, we were both in flip flops and slippers and oh boy it was a bad choice. You really don’t want to walk half a day on those cobbled streets in those.

  • 4/5 Rob H. 7 months ago on Google
We took an excursion off the ship. So we didn't have to wait in line. Somehow, we didn't see as many mosaics than I did 40 years ago. But lots more have been uncovered. Was still amazing.
