(Translated by Google) The cloister of the Benedictine abbey of San Paolo is one of the marvels of thirteenth-century Rome. Conceived and decorated by Pietro Vassalletto, it stands out for the architectural harmony and the magnificence of the decorations. Note the epistyle decorated with mosaics and the zoomorphic sculptures on the white marble frame. The cloister is the connecting element between the basilica and the convent.

The beauty of Basilica and his rich history leaves no one indifferent. The exterior view of Basilica is breathtaking. The Basilica was built at the time of Emperor Constantine at the site of the historical tomb of St. Paul. In front of Basilica is a beautiful garden with a statue of St. Paul. One of the three entrance doors is the bronze, the so-called Holy Door. The interior of the basilica is magnificent, huge and beautifully decorated. The ceiling is in the Renaissance style decorated with white and gold colors, and the floor is of reflective marble. The whole interior is so beautiful that we have to admire people who have designed and built it. Between the windows and pillars there is a long row of mosaic medallions with portraits of the pope, from St. Peter to Pope Francis. Below the papal altar are preserved the relics of St. Paul. It is imperative to visit this Basilica.

I've been to Rome so many times and I can't believe I didn't know this place existed, WOW! 1. Its FREE! 2. it's one of the biggest, most beautiful basilicas I've seen in my life. 3. It's not in the city center which means it's less touristy - we've been one of the few who visited that day (Saturday during November). The history of the place you can lookup yourselves but you have to see it with your own eyes. Absolutely remarkable and impressive. A must visit!

Beautiful basilica just outside Ancient Rome. It’s one of the main churches in Rome. The scale is grand. Pictures of the popes circle just below the ceiling. In the front you can find St. Paul’s tomb and chains. A lovely mosaic is above the altar.

I was blessed to be able to visit the burial place of St Paul during Easter. It is about half an hour outside of Rome and not too far from the station. It is a solemn church looked after by the Benedictine Monks and the lamp besides the tomb had been lit for over 800 years (I think I got the number correct). A must visit for anyone on a pilgrimage to Rome, you would not regret coming here. There's a cafe on site if you need a break as well as bathroom is also available.

St. Paul “Outside the Walls” (not to be confused with the similarly themed Vans “Off the Wall”) is yet another instance in Rome where one cannot help but question their entire existence. This magnificent church houses row upon row of glorious Roman columns, stunning 12th century Byzantine mosaics, and last/most prominently the very tomb of the Apostle Paul himself. As an added bonus, a chain that allegedly bound the good Apostle in prison is also on full display. An unforgettable experience and truly well worth the journey beyond the comfortable confines of the Walls!

The second biggest cathedral behind St Peter's, however not too many are aware of that. It would deserve more recognition for sure, in my personal opinion that one was the most beautiful church I have ever been to. It does have significant decoration but not that overwhelming. The best part is definitely in the back - an inner courtyard with Paul's statue and palm trees. The whole atmosphere is pretty cool, and it is only a couple of stops from the centre, make sure not to miss it.

One of my favourite basilicas to visit while in Rome, just a twenty minute ride from the city centre. The basilica is spectacular and breathtaking, it is big and bold and beautiful. The building has been well taken care of and is free to enter. The monuments and statues outside in the central gardens are gorgeous and picturesque. It’s well worth the visit if you’re using the Rome metro and definitely a scenic spot to voyage out too!

This Basilica is simply breath taking. It suffered fire damage in the 1800's but through funding and amazing work, it is restored and it is a sight to behold. It is well worth a trip from the city center and the portraits of the current and former popes is stunning.

Visiting the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome was a profound experience. The sheer grandeur of the basilica's architecture and the sense of history that permeates the surroundings left an indelible mark on me. Exploring the interior, adorned with intricate mosaics, was a journey through time and faith. I also had the privilege of witnessing a beautiful Mass, which added to the spiritual ambiance of this sacred place. The basilica's serene gardens provided a tranquil retreat, offering a moment of reflection amidst the bustling city. I recommend this awe-inspiring site to anyone seeking a deeper connection with both history and spirituality in the heart of Rome.

Burial place of St. Paul located in a cavernous basilica church. The church and convent are a bit of a ways from the center so its best to take the metro to the S. Paolo station from where it is a short walk to the basilica. There is an entry fee but its fairly cheap and definitely worth it. The church itself is enormous and has a simple feel despite the dozens of columns, hundreds of kilograms of gold-leaf and marble that it comprises of. Most importantly it houses the resting place of St. Paul one of the most important figures of Christianity.

10-15 minute ride from Termini and well worth it in my opinion. A nice break from the hustle of the city. Paul’s tomb and the chains from his imprisonment was very interesting. The architecture and design are also very impressive. Be prepared for a bit of walking as the size and depth of the grounds and building are comparable to the Vatican.

This Basilica is far impressive than what I've seen in Italy. The mosaic and statues are simply breaktaking. The mere fact that Papa Francis and all the popes are not painted on but are in fact a mosaics. The Basilica is massive and the gardens in front is absolutely gorgeous. My family (24) was fortunate to have a private mass done for our family, as it was our last night in Italy. An appropriate way to end our Italian Family Adventure. The mass was held in the St. Benedict Chapel, in the nave of the Church. The staff and security made our visit welcoming and it was an honor to be recognized as their guests.

(Translated by Google) This cloister was begun in 1205 and finished in 1235 by the Cosmati and the Vassalletto brothers, well-known Roman marble workers. In the center there are four well-kept flower beds; the galleries unfold showing paired, smooth, fluted, twisted columns, some encrusted with mosaics, which support a round arch. The Latin metric inscription that can be seen on the outside, along the entablature of the three most recent sides, illustrates the meaning of the cloister and hints at its history. On the walls are exposed archaeological finds from excavations. The Archaeological Walk along the south wall of the Basilica collects a series of monumental capitals and parts of columns from the primitive Basilica. Along the archaeological walk there are the toilets, the souvenir shop and the refreshment point. On the cloister there are some rooms, used for various functions. At least six boards of the fillet game are engraved on some slabs covering the low wall, some poorly made and perhaps the work of pilgrims. The visit requires an entrance ticket, to be paid at the bookshop. From there, two heavy doors first open onto a modern covered gallery which exhibits some artifacts; after a slight clearing in which the copy of the Dogmatic Sarcophagus or "of the two Testaments" (once kept here and now in the Museo Pio of the Vatican Museums) is kept, we finally arrive in the cloister.

This basilica is just incredible. It's scale is massive with a breathtaking outdoor antrum. Parrots flit between huge palms and a beautiful statue of St Paul. The interior is next level in both size and beauty. There were very few visitors. Four ornate dedicated chapels are left and right of the main alter. The dome is gorgeously painted. The tomb of St Paul is here. The surrounding exterior grounds are unfortunately nothing of note, fairly run down. I highly recommend seeing this gem on the outskirts of Rome south east ( I think) of Trastevere. There are convenient toilettes as well as a small cafe and gift shop. The shop included wonderful glass mosaics for sale ( not cheap!). There is also a small underground excavated area for €1 entry. Don't miss this one !!

I passed by this basilica by chance while i was jogging in the morning. It was magnificent from the outside with beautiful garden & statues. The guards said it’s free to visit and he gave me a blue soft clothes material bcz ofc we need to be more cover up to enter the basilica. This is the 2nd biggest basilica in Rome after Basílica San Pietro. In my opinion this Basilica is definitely grandeur … and since it’s in the Garbatella / Ostiense area so not so swamped by tourist, only by well planned/coordinated group of tourist. They also have other area such as toilet, souvenirs shop, & bar/coffee shop.. & underground archaeological site. Q: does it have mass / ceremony? A: yes, it’s an active basilica Q: what to wear? A: proper & respectful clothes Q: do we need ticket to enter? A: no, you don’t need any ticket & it’s free, there’s a small box of offer available in the entrance & exit. You may visit the garden and some part of the church freely, but to visit some other parts of the church you need to buy the ticket at the souvenir shop (I didn’t ask the price 😅). To visit the underground archaeological site you only need to pay €1.

Absolutely incredible! This basilica rivals St Peter's in size and beauty! Best of all, you can enjoy it in peace and quiet, as few people make it out here since it's off the beaten track. This basilica is not only dedicated to St Paul, but claims to hold his remains as well. There are portraits of all the popes on the walls as well.

Truly a hidden gem of Rome. For me the second most beautiful church I've ever seen, right after St. Peter's in Vatican. Huge, magnificent, with a small park, nicely decorated inside and outside. Also almost no tourist. The thing I like the most were the circles inside with pictures of all the Popes.

Basilica San Paolo is my favorite basilica. It's impressively large, with a beautiful inner courtyard adorned with palm trees. The limited tourist crowds add to its allure, showcasing its incredible beauty. The presence of a bar on the premises is a convenient touch.

Absolutely amazing. It is a very impressive building, no matter what you believe. It opens at 7 am. This is the best time to go to avoid the lines. We arrived at 06:50 and the lines were minimal outside. Inside there was no line to go up to the dome at all. I would say if you are not comfortable in confined spaces don’t go up the the upper exterior dome look-out. The spiral stairs are something else and with a massive line of people that could get challenging for those who don’t like tight spaces. Super incredible to see though at going so early we avoided all of the crowds!

(Translated by Google) A small price and it will probably seem excessive to most, especially if you make the mistake of considering the entrance to the basilica (duly free) as a term of comparison. This is the museum part of the complex, it leads into an articulated series of rooms (picture gallery, room of relics, votive offerings, etc.) and ends with the archaeological area. This 13th century secret casket was created by the most important marble artists of the time and is characterized by the famous twisted columns which delimit the area of the four beautiful flower beds (they are so well cared for that they look like artificial hedges). Some of the exhibited works are of great value, starting with the copy of the sarcophagus of the two wills (the original, needless to say, is in the Vatican Museums). It would be a serious mistake to go out without completing the visit by going down into the basement... your ticket will allow you to go through the turnstile to go down to the archaeological area. Look at the photos I posted and the other reviews on Rome and its wonders that I made and if I was helpful click on helpful and follow me if you want (Original) Un piccolo prezzo e probabilmente ai più sembrerà anche eccessivo soprattutto se si commette l'errore di considerare l'ingresso nella basilica (doverosamente gratuito ) come termine di paragone. One of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen. If anything divine exists in man, it is the ability to create something like this. And as a Roman Catholic seeing the tomb of St. Paul was a profound experience. There are many extraordinary places to visit in Rome, but I highly recommend this one.

Worth a visit if you’re in the area, but I wouldn’t go out of my way just to see it. The courtyard is quite impressive and the ceilings too. As is often the case in Italian churches, women have to dress in a way that covers their shoulders and knees, so if you’re wearing shorts or a spaghetti top, you’ll probably receive a scarf to cover up (I had my own but it seems they lend them for free at the entrance). Free entrance, no ticket required.

(Translated by Google) I was expecting something more, also considering the 4 euro ticket. The cloister is very bare inside. Maybe some plants and some flowers would stand out. The art gallery consists of a room and little more. Interesting, but when compared to the free entrance to the basilica, I think there is no comparison. I recommend to visit it, without making too much "mouth". Il chiostro è molto spoglio all'interno. (Translated by Google) The cloister of the Basilica of San Paolo outside the walls is truly a unique experience if you manage to visit it when there aren't many people: in this way you can appreciate the true spiritual dimension of a cloister. Today was one of those days: I found myself alone in the center of the cloister, immersed in an almost palpable silence. The light played with the long rows of finely decorated columns and arches, creating plays of light and shadow on the floor of the corridors of the cloister, with almost hypnotic designs. An experience that restores the spirit, giving an inner serenity that refers to distant centuries, which is added to the visit of the Basilica which elevates one spiritually, and from which one enters the cloister along a short atrium frescoed with medieval paintings. The perimeter walls of the cloister are enriched with ancient tombstones dating back to burials of ancient Rome with sarcophagi and statues that silently observe the scene as the seasons go by. Despite being a hot day at the end of June, it was really an appreciated visit, which I recommend to anyone with symptoms to stop by here.

(Translated by Google) Magnificent example of a medieval cloister in the style of the Cosmati and Vassalletto, families of Roman marble workers, active in Rome and its province between the 11th and 14th centuries. The cloister of the basilica of S. Paolo is the twin of that of the basilica of S. Giovanni. It has the characteristic quadrangular plan with the perimeter consisting of a series of windows delimited by twisted paired columns and the central area occupied by flower beds and a fountain. A hidden and free gem in Rome. It’s not in the city center but it definitely deserves your attention. Inside you can see more than 260 painted faces of all popes as well as a huge and dramatic room with many columns. It looks absolutely spectacular! I have never seen anything like that before.

Imposing and gorgeous Basilica, with a lovely garden, big gift shop (best I've seen in all sights in Rome) and bar, everything in immaculate condition and extremely shiny and looked after. I could feel the sacredness of the place, immerse in centuries of history and the many materials and works of art which are there. I truly enjoyed the visit, especially because there wasn't the usual horde of tourists, the church being outside the city center, and read the panels which explain this and that at my own pace, while taking a lot of pictures. The entry is free (strangely, there was a coin operated turnstile to enter the older part beneath, but the walls and structures are visible from up as well) and I would highly recommend going when in Rome.

I didn't even register that St Paul was buried in Rome too but we stopped at his church and had a good look around. The interior was massive and freshly rebuilt after the late nineteenth century fire. We paid the €4 for the optional tour of the cloisters and archeological area and that was well worth it. The cloisters were a beautiful design and very peaceful and the archeological area had all the old bits they'd found I think, mostly fragments but some beautiful classical sculptures too and some lovely early medieval wall paintings.
