Cracking day out on the East Lancashire Railway - great volunteers keep it going and it's clear they enjoy what they do. I got on at Ramsbottom and did both directions. They stop at some of the stations long enough for you to get off and have a look at the stations a bit more closely.

Nice scenery. The volunteers deserve a lot of credit for keeping railway preservation alive. Some exotic steam power; I enjoyed a southbound run behind City of Wells. A fantastic collection of diesels too which get a fair bit of running on the line. I only had time for the southbound run on my visit to Bury only. The gradients seem to be in the opposite direction so I’d recommend a northbound run to get the locos working hard, and also on one of the services which takes the ‘ski jump’ over to Heywood.

Had a lovely trip to this station.. I took the train ride from bury. Lovely traditional station with old bags on show. Traditional crossing here and classic bridge over the railway. Great sport to just see the stream train. £8.50 return journey for adults to bury. Kids were cheaper and they do an OAP discount. Journey was about 20mins each way on a wonderful stream train.

Visited East Lancashire Railway on 6 December for the Christmas Lunch Experience. Upon arrival we received a warm welcome and guided through an animated Christmas area to the platform where our train was waiting. We were then welcomed aboard our festive Steam Train which was tastefully decorated. My friend and I was shown to our table (16) a nicely set table for four however we didn't have to share so very spacious. It was set with 2 glasses of sparkling wine, nice crockery, cutlery, glasses and crackers. The food was served on hot plates, well presented, cooked to perfection, plentifull, delicious and in a timely manner by amazing staff who worked as a team. All food was served by silver service fine dinning. It exceeded all expectations and compared to any top restaurant. All members of staff were helpfull, willing, professional and pleasant without being intrusive. I cannot recomend this experience enough it is fantastic. A truly memorable 3 hours. Thank you to everyone involved and I look forward to returning soon.

We had a lovely family day out on this lovely, well maintained railway line. The staff are all absolutely lovely, friendly and very helpful. Chandra Law at Ramsbottom was especially pleasant, what a lovely lady! We visited with 2 small children, a pram and elderly parents and the help we received getting on and off the trains was great. I really can't speak highly enough of the people. There is a cafe on every, or almost every, station with coffee and snacks. Some stations have really nice looking lunch spots but we didn't try these as we took a picnic.

Some of the best steam action in the country. From Flying Scotsman to Pugs... just superb atmosphere and wonderful people

Had the pleasure of attending a black tie dinner behind a GWR pannier tank engine. The entire experience is spot on. Met with a glass of bubbly, canapés a plenty, time to inspect the engine. They even allowed people on the footplate, very unusual! The meal was first class and a good selection of drinks available. An absolutely fantastic evening. The only fault is that the entrance is not through the ticket office (where many people were waiting) and no signs to advise where to go.

Unfortunately the steam train was not working as we have been told that it needs for some repairs. Diesel train was being in use instead of steam. At any rate it was a nice experience

Great volunteer run heritage station on the East Lancashire Railway. Chandra the Station Master is very welcoming and knowledgeable. Watch the signalman operate the level crossing by turning the gate wheel just before the train approaches from Rawtenstall. If you're looking closely enough you'll see the train crew hand over the token for the Irwell Vale section back to the signalman! Ramsbottom station is a very good reconstruction of an L&Y station and well worth a visit.

Ramsbottom train station is a small but charming railway station located in the town of Ramsbottom in Greater Manchester. The station serves the village and the town of Ramsbottom and its surrounding area, providing easy access to a range of destinations across the region. The station is set in an idyllic location, nestled in the heart of the town and surrounded by greenery and woodland. Its compact size and picturesque setting make it a popular spot for railway enthusiasts, day-trippers, and commuters alike. Ramsbottom train station has two platforms, both of which are linked by a footbridge. The platforms are well-maintained, complete with shelters and seating areas for passengers waiting for their train. The station is served by regular trains running between Manchester Victoria and Blackburn. There is also an infrequent service to Heywood and Bury on the East Lancashire Railway heritage line. The station building at Ramsbottom retains much of its original charm and character, with many period features still intact. It houses a small ticket office and waiting area for passengers, as well as public toilet facilities. Overall, Ramsbottom train station is a lovely example of a rural railway station, with friendly staff, a tranquil location, and excellent transport links to the surrounding area. It is an essential provider of commuter transport for the residents of Ramsbottom and a popular gateway to the scenic Rossendale area.

Despite the rain enjoyed a great day out on the ELR for the Diesel Gala, passing through Ramsbottom station several times.

If you love heritage trains, you will love the East Lancashire Railway. Ramsbottom Station is lovingly maintained.

Ramsbottom Station complex is, like all the ELR stations, beautifully restored and maintained. My only criticism is the £2 platform charge. Given the (understandably) high ticket prices to travel, especially behind an iconic loco such as 60103 Flying Scotsman in my photos, I feel the organisation could waive the platform charges at least for the visits of the more famous steam locos.

The East Lancashire Railway is a gem , I visited from NZ and the history and beautiful countryside that it travels through is worth every penny of the ticket price . Loved it :)
