It presents mainly the history of the Bulgarian state railways. It is located in the "Youth Park" near the Danube River. Keeping in shape the first ever train in Bulgaria and the story of the Bulgarian state train company, this is a must visit if you are in Ruse. The museum has two parts - on the outside with the different wagons and machines, including the one from 1866, which has arrived from UK on a ship on the Danube, and one in the inside with actual models and layouts, archive photographs, articles and clothing. The people running the museum are extremely nice and welcoming and also possess a rich know how, which they gladly share with the visitors. The place has an in-house workshop where a craftsman restores all the exquisite wooden elements in the interiors of the wagons. Would gladly come back. Such a marvellous and fabulous place.

If you are a railway enthusiast or would like to visit something different in Ruse, why not take a walk from the city through the park and down to the edge of the River Danube to visit this small museum with its history and several exhibits of trains and carriages of the early days of rail in Bulgaria. Knock on the door or ring the bell at the building to attract someones attention. Our guide spoke some English and was very informative and most patient. I'm only giving a 2 star for its historic significance and an extra star for the guide. A national museum sounds a rather grand title for what it actually is.

I give only 3 stars for the personnel there. We visited only the exterior, with the trains (which by the way are awesome - we felt like in a Sherlock Holmes movie). Later, when I checked Google reviews, I've have seen that is an museum inside. The lady there didn't said about that, because it was around 30 minutes before closing time. It was plenty of time, but maybe she was hurrying to go home. This is not the way you should make turism!

Very cool to see several old trains, outside and inside, including the royal train from early 1900s. No signage in English. Off the beaten track but we were warmly welcomed.

Very, very nice guide, but the museum is very poor... We can really see that the government do not want to invest in the "national" museum ...

This small museum was amazing! We absolutely loved our time there. The entrance was cheap, 5 levs per adult (1 lev for students), and the lady gave us a very educational and informative tour. The staff was really nice, even had a little talk after about trains. They have big models of trains and carriages, maps, pictures, and my favourite, a working modul train setup. We recommend coming during summer as you can see the inside of real fancy old carriages. There were a few kids there who were having a lot of fun, and the staff said they'll add more information and pictures that kids asked for. Highly recommended to find time and visit!

We have visit this museum in 14th August and it was opened. The guide of the museum was really nice, informative and talk with passion. The museum is not so big outside there are around 7 vehicles - 3 locomotives and 3 or 4 carriages with very interesting furnishing.Inside the museum is full of information but only for Bulgarian railways and how railways are developed from the beginning. I think that such a museum is one of a kind in Bulgaria but it will be good if this museum can grow more.

An underrated little gem of a museum, which used to itself be the train station! The train line next to the museum is still active with goods trains, so you can see them pass from what used to be the waiting rooms. Staff were friendly, entrance is very cheap (5 leva for an adult, cheaper with concessions), and the exhibits are interesting and well-kept. Sadly we couldn't see the carriages outside as we visited later in the year, but it was definitely worth the visit. Exhibits naturally revolve around Ruse's history with the railway, so worth visiting for rail enthusiasts. Signs are all in Bulgarian, so have Google translate at the ready if you don't read the language! Almost all negative reviews on here appear to be outdated, the place is in much better condition than they describe.

A lovely gem of a museum! You can enter posh historical carriages with polished wood and thick velvet curtains. And the troika of historical locomotives shows how everything had been better in the past: the oldest one from 1866 is in mint condition, while the newest one from 100 years later has deteriorated the most. National transport museum is a misnomer - it's more a regional museum of the first Bulgarian railway from Ruse to Varna.

Overall interesting exhibition (including numerous archives and objects), that brings us back to the past of the railway pioneers in Bulgaria, as well as river transport on the Danube and telecommunications. However, the museum is really old style and would need a thorough update. In particular, the explanations still seem to date from the communist era, with statements such as the “triumph of the working classes against evil capitalism”, the “liberation” of 9th September 1944, etc. A historical work should be conducted to separate facts from political interpretation. Museums have a mission to educate, and a critical historical work must be made if we want Bulgaria to heal from its recent totalitarian past and to thrive on the path of democracy. Needless to say, English texts and a more interactive content would be more than welcome too.

Expensive and not that much to see It cost 10BGN (something weird like 2+4+4 -for what?) for a pretty average museum with absolutely no English. At first the ticket person wasn't even going to let us see the trains unless we waited for a group. Finally she relented - they were the best part, but not worth 10 BGN in comparison to some excellent museums we have been in in Bulgaria.

The museum is a must-see if you are in or nearby Russe. You can enjoy the locomotive and train Bulgarian history, the main attraction is Tzar's car, you can actually get in it and feel the Tzar's travel experience.

It is very poor maintained museum. It is beautiful and has a lot of information and served by only one person and one guard?! There are a lot of historical artefacts available but due to the lack of budget they looks poor. Go, visit and work to help them if you wish.
