Very cool, very old (1360 AD) church built into the cliff face. There are frescos that have survived intact and are very well preserved, especially on the ceiling, but many others are damaged as would be expected. Look closely and see an interpretation of the Last Supper that is 100 years older than da Vinci's masterpiece. Don't expect a large place (it's carved into a cliff, after all) or vivid colors as I believe the church, though protected, was still open to the elements for hundreds of years. There is also a nice, flat look out area on the way up that shows the beautiful valley and surrounding cliffs. Note: There's a longer, sloping way up that doesn't involve as many steps that makes the church a little easier to reach, although you will still have to navigate at least a few steps. You can take the steep steps on the way down, but if you have knee problems, just take the long way back, as from what I understand, going down steps is actually harder on your knees than going up.

This is a beautiful and magic place - not only because of its historic significance, but also for the natural beauty of its location. It is worthwhile to make the trip and see the medieval frescoes

This site is an amazing UNESCO World Heritage Site with frescos dating 800 years ago. I loved the (easy) climb and the site. Beware of the hungry mosquitos and spray generously before ascending the stairs.

A really cool old church carved into a mountain. There's a gentle walking trail up to the church entrance (if the 126 steep stairs are too challenging) with nice views of the surrounding valley. The murals inside the church itself are breathtaking and remarkably well preserved. There was a tour guide at the entrance who collected fees and answered questions about the structure and its history. Definitely worth a visit if you are in/near Ruse.

This is a remarkable place; think about: the paintings are created in the 14th century and explain the live of Jesus. A must see if you are in the area.

These medieval temples are interesting to visit. They have played a significant role in the second Bulgarian kingdom.  But please don't expect to see something wow. Rock-Hewn Churches of Ivanovo are located near Ruse. The town i strongly recommend to see.Parking is not a problem. Entrance is around 6 EUR. Kids are for free but as always prices may vary year to year. There are not restaurants nearby.

Beautiful frescoes that are incredibly well preserved inside this tiny church hewn from rock. I recommend taking the path past the souvenir shop and walk up the hill following the sign. The stairs from the car park were incredibly slippy (it had just rained) although there is a hand rail to hold. The ticket man was incredibly helpful and told us all about the frescoes in English.

Excellent C13 monastery with roof and wall paintings. Beautiful views out into the valley. Quite a stiff climb 40 metres up to the monastery.

Unique and quite impressive place. Ask for a guided tour- the guide has treasured stories about the church and its 660 years of history.

Very interesting historical place, the path is nice and easy, very short, there is a panoramic view. The ecopath is in Rusenski Lom Natural Park, a place you should consider to visit, but be careful of the mosquitoes.

The caves have been inhabited by monks from the 1200 when it was founded by the Patriarch of Bulgaria Joachim I. The monastery complex reached over 40 churches. Frescoes were painted in 13th century. There are nice stairs to climb (the old wooden ones were removed) ... There is also a panoramic view.

I would not say that is impressive but it is worth a look. There is quite a great scenery, there's also a small hike path that guides you to some view points. In the end you arrive at the church where you can find details of what and how it happened to look as it is, in different languages given to you for free by the guides over there. Also there is a gift shop from where you can buy magnets and some perfumes.

Beautiful, but small and very few people although I was there on a Sunday (27 august 2023). It is also not suited for many people. Better go there with an organized tour or with private transportation. I came from Ruse, took train to Ivanovo. But no transportation from there to the church. And no trsnsportation from church to Ruse or Ivanovo. On location you can buy drinks but no food

A church cut into the rock hundreds of years ago, and then painted with biblical scenes on every surface possible! Access is either up some steep steps, or along a cliff side path, so not for the faint. But the view inside is quite something, and the view from the balcony spectacular!

Nice place to spend for few hours. To get to the site you need to climb a few tens of stairs, so it is difficult to access for people with locomotion problems, but there is a longer alternative, not so hardly to get up. Also there is an entrance fee: 10 leva/adult and 5 leva/children.

This was well worth the effort it took for us to get there and check this place out. We were on foot so we had to walk from the train station but it was so fascinating. We’ve been a lot of places and have seen a lot of cool things. This will stick in our memories.

  • 4/5 Kevin M. 11 months ago on Google
This is an amazing rock church, high up a limestone cliff. It is best to visit it in a circular (clockwise) manner i. e. walk along the flat paved road along from the large car park (with the church on your right) about 200 metres. Turn right up the mud and stone track. After a few minutes you will emerge at the top of the Ridge, with panoramic views all around. You are now on a stone track, with a sturdy steel handrail, and quite safe. Turn left for a photo opportunity, then back towards the church. It is about 100 metres, and you will pass quite a large cave on your left. Go around the bend to get to the church. If you are brave enough, step out onto the balcony. Come down via the steps back to the car park. The secret to doing this safely, is to wear good footwear that won't slip on mud or wooden steps.

Amazing rock-hewn church from the 13th century 38 m above ground. The personnel is really welcoming. They even provided a brief guided tour in Bulgarian and Romanian even though we haven't paid for it (there is a separate fee for that). I guess they can do so even in English. All in all, a place worth the visit!

(Translated by Google) Beautiful historic site, but must be maintained more often to be attractive to tourists. The sign from the central road is unrecognizable - faded inscriptions and beginnings of corrosion. The road to the parking lot is overgrown, the bike lane or pedestrian sidewalk (I can't determine exactly what it is) is sunk in grass, mud, dirt and practically unusable.

The caretaker of the place has a lot of knowledge, it is worth asking for various details, in return we will get very interesting information about the history of the monument. Outside the church, it is worth walking along a short, but very picturesque path to the viewpoint. A place definitely worth recommending. (Original) Bardzo ciekawe i piękne miejsce. Poza kościołem warto przejść krótką, acz bardzo malowniczą ścieżką na punkt widokowy. Miejsce zdecydowanie godne polecenia.
