This museum deserves 5 stars its one of the best I have seen in Africa. It has different galleries, 6 I believe. Unfortunately the lady that attended to me forgot to mention that the rwandan museum board has an offer that gives a 30 % off on entry fees if you decide to see all museums and pay at once. The museum offers you the possibility to see basket weavers and intore dancers at extra fee. She unfortunately didn't not mention this as well. You get good overview of rwandan architecture, culture, geology and history. You aren't allowed to take pictures inside the museum which I find a shame and a bit outdated practise found in a lot of African museums but otherwise totally worth a visit.

If you want to learn about our history and travel to one of the beautiful parts of Rwanda, then this should be on your list. Great service, the tour guides were welcoming. There's plenty of space for kids to run around outside BTW. You can kill 2 to 3 birds with one stone 🤣Before you reach here, you can pass by the king's palace and heritage museum... there's a lot to do in those areas. All you need is time. It's affordable.

I personally found this place to be of great value and meaningful to not only Rwandans but also whoever wishes to know more about Rwanda. This place contains many historical aspects divided into five galleries. The place is large and calm, having a nice view. It has a large parking lot and a nice looking garden. Besides the museum, there is a traditional palace well-designed as the ancient ones. Lastly, every history within the museum is well marked with a written explanation in all the three official languages used in Rwanda i.e.English, Kinyarwanda and French, which makes it clear and understandable.

Low rating as it should be free and guide/tip based - Museum has potential but lacks an interactive learning component. Would have loved to see replicas of the traditional rain hoods and headdresses rather than just photos. Very basic museum containing beautiful handmade artifacts and replicas of traditional items - many of which I’ve seen still being used in rural Rwanda. No photos allowed inside. 6,000 Franks Each. Guide available for an additional cost. Have exact change. We were 50franks off and almost had to pay 4,000 franks over because they “didn’t have change this early”. (It was 12:00 on a Sunday.) Luckily a friend had another coin. 6 rooms, each a gallery alongside old photographs and informational text in English, French, and Kinyarwanda. Room 1: Basic Geography of Rwanda Rooms 2: Traditional Tools Room 3: weaving, pottery and woodwork Room 4: Traditional Homes including a Life size model of traditional house. Room 5: Clothing, weapons, jewelry, games, money + chronological history. Room 6: Artifacts, tools/info on cultural tradition for weddings, Divination, and musical instruments.

Detailed guiding with adequate information on cultural and traditional pathways of Rwandan living. It offers you information on agricultural heritage, traditional customs, clothes and wearing and local faith (before Christianity and Islam took over). The visit is worth the price and is insightful.

This is a nice museum, though the placards are a bit dated now. If you are interested in culture, language and history, this is a great stop. The grounds are perhaps even better, with expansive lawns, a forested area, traditional houses and an arts area for people (I assume locals) to learn and practice traditional arts.

Ethnographic Museum is located in Huye, 132 km South of Kigali-Rwanda's Capital. The Ethnographic Museum is one of the eight museums that make up the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda. This Museum was built in 1987, and now houses one of Africa's finest ethnographic collections. Its seven galleries display historical, ethnographic, artistic and archaeological artifacts accompanied by visual aides, giving visitors a rich insight into the culture of Rwandans. Opening hours Open daily from 08:00 to 17:00 Closed on 7th April Closed 11am to 6pm on Umuganda days (the last Saturday of the month)

  • 5/5 Kagoma Ya T. 1 year ago on Google
Great!!! There's a lot to see and learn about the ways, crafts, livelihoods of ancient Rwandans. What I loved the most is that some of the items exhibited here are not enclosed within glass cases. You can look them closely and probably touch them. There's also a prototype of an ancient house that you can enter and it feels like walking into the past. This a great place to learn about the aesthetics and crafts of our (Rwandan) ancestors!

The visit to this museum will definitely enrich you with Rwandan culture.

  • 3/5 Marc A. 1 year ago on Google
I enjoyed the visit as I was with a Rwandan who could connect the information in the museum with her own family history. Is it worthwhile to make a detour to visit the museum? For me personally not but i can imagine that for a Rwandan or someone who is into ethnography it would be. I do think you should visit it if you are in Huye / Butare, or passing on the way to Nyungwe.
