(Translated by Google) The Diocese of Portalegre was created in the 16th century and had as its first bishop D. Julião de Alva, chaplain to D. Catarina, wife of D. João III (1521-57), who ordered the construction of the new Cathedral, consecrated to Our Lady of Asuncion. The works began in 1556 with a project by Afonso Álvares and the last stone, the top of the vault, was placed in 1575. Created in a late Renaissance style, the temple underwent alterations between 1737 and 1798, already in Baroque style, as can be seen since logo on the stonework of the porticos on the facade and bell towers. Inside, lit by 28 windows, we can find 17th century tile panels and a remarkable set of Mannerist paintings, which is unique in the country. The altarpieces of the main altar and the side chapels comprise ninety-six paintings, in which several Portuguese artists participated during the 16th and 17th centuries. To the right of the altar is the Capela do Santíssimo and to the left the Chapel of São Pedro. The pulpits are in marble, as are the railings placed in front of the chancel, where you can admire the work of the sculptor and carver Gaspar Coelho and the painters Francisco Venegas, Fernão Gomes and Simão Rodrigues. The remaining paintings in the church are attributed to the Oficina de Portalegre, Cristovão Vaz de Lisboa, Diogo Teixeira, Pedro Álvares Pereira de Coimbra and the Spanish School. In the vaults, you can admire several Mannerist grotesque motifs, cartouches, masks, flowers and hybrid beings, probably inspired by the Flemish engravings that circulated in Europe at the time. You can also visit the sacristy covered in 18th century tiles (representing the «Escape to Egypt») and the cloister, completed in the 18th century. On the north side is the old Episcopal Palace, which was the residence of the Bishops until 1910 and communicated internally with the Cathedral.

Great historical interest, open from early morning to late afternoon. However its somewhat badly kept. The art in exposition clearly needs some restaure work as does the furniture present.
