A wonderful bit of history to experience while visiting Barbados. Unfortunately, due to time constraint, I was not able to visit the underground tunnels but I would recommend making time to visit it if visiting George Washington House. Overall, the grounds are well maintained. The Interior of the home does well to transport you back to that era. There are loads of information provided to help paint you a clear picture of those times. I truly enjoyed my visit

This is a historical house where George Washington, the future first president of United States of America stayed in 1751 at the age of 19, visiting on of his brother, who owned sugarcane plantations in Barbados. Surprisingly Barbados is the only nation he ever visited outside United States. Unfortunately the premisis was closed to visitors due to the Pandemic, but somebody there was generous enough to allow me to take photos. Also had a long talk with Mrs. Margerat, who used to work as a tour guide there about the House in particular and Barbados in general.

Good self-guided tour, cheesy but informative mini-documentary film, lovely grounds, and well-signed information. When finished, you can exit via a long dark tunnel, recently re-opened, part of a series of tunnels in the historic Garrison area. It was $20 BD when I visited (April 2022).

Really interesting museum within the UNESCO Garrison district. Don’t miss the tunnel and the super yummy food at the cafe onsite!!!

I was pretty much the only person there all day. Covid restrictions only allow the house itself to be open until noon. The downstairs looks like a pretty faithful restoration of the era, but due to the climate, some of the wall stucco and paint is already flaking off. The upstairs has been turned into a museum, and is climate controlled (with air conditioning). The displays and the informational parts are top notch! You really get a picture of what it was like to live there in the 18th century. The section on slavery was especially moving, and to see how it tied into colonial Virginia and Washington at Mt. Vernon was enlightening. The extra areas are closed (due to covid), and the newly discovered tunnel, welcome center, and cafe/gift store are shut down for now as well. Great experience overall though if you have time to kill and want to be self-guided.

Interesting museum with self guided audio tour. 15 minute video gives information on how George Washington had come to Barbados with his brother Lawrence and the history behind it. The main house has two floors to walk around and there is a cafe available for some drinks and snacks. There is a garrison tunnel to walk through. It is narrow but we’ll lit. It was raining when we visited and there we had to walk through water, which we weren’t prepared for, but nothing much done there to look at. There are clean bathroom facilities as well next to entrance.

If you have any interest in history, DO THE GARRISON TOUR AND WASHINGTON HOUSE! The guides are amazing and full of knowledge. Learning the history of Barbados in this way was an amazing experience for this History Teacher from California.

Excellent tour and historical landmark. If you get here around opening like I did, chances are you will have the house to yourself, or almost so. There's also a neat tunnel network you can explore, but be warned that it gets wet down there. I recommend wearing water shoes to avoid worrying about any harm.

We enjoyed our tour and visit. Video gave us a sneak peek of the site. Was not prepared for the underground tunnels, but I survived. Mr. Washington was more than just our first US President.

A worthwhile stop on your travels around Barbados- visit on a Tuesday or Thursday to take in the full 3 hr tour of the Garrison. Very interesting and VERY well put together- interactive displays throughout. Highly recommended.

Nice thing to do if you're out and about. Bit out of the way so get a taxi or the bus to reach your destination. You get to learn a chapter of history most likely unknown by most. It's a well-preserved house on top of a hill and a 30min video explaining the history of GW's visit to Barbados

I was on a cruise and my tour was booked through the cruise line. I love history and culture and it was a great tour. The tour of the George Washington House and the Garrison was great. I learned a great deal about George Washington when he was a young man of 19. The monkeys were an unforeseen treat.

Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy the tour. It was dragging and boring. Prepare yourself that you have to wait for other people and guides to be able to complete the whole tour. You cannot do it on your own. First there was a short film, we didn't see it, so we cannot comment. We had to wait for the people to come out and we were taken to see the tunnel with another guide. He gave us a very uninteresting speech for about 15 minutes beforehand but the tunnel itself was only about 20 meter long and we finished it in 2 minutes. The tunnel itself is much longer and more complex but the rest of it is sectioned off and closed for public. There came the next bit to see the house upstairs, there is a museum, you can do that bit by yourself. That was alright. Then another tour guide, a long boring talk to listen to again, slowly moving through downstairs in the house. That was when we sneaked out, unfortunately we just couldn't do it although we really tried.

Located a short walk from the Barbados Museum. I recommend coming for a visit. Tours are self guided but have an audio device to explain the details. Lots of history and there is a theater which plays a documentary. Nice decor throughout the property.

Had a wonderful time, our host was very knowledgeable about the place and history behind it. Gave us a great tour, he and I am so sorry I dont remember his name because he was so awesome, went in to depth about the George Washington house, his time here on the island, and the history behind not only the site, but also about the island. We even had group discussions, which put us behind. 😆😆

Made an impromptu stop at the restaurant and boy were we pleasantly surprised. The garden setting was peaceful, the lemonade just what we needed for the scorching hot day, and the food was excellent! Great service too!

The George Washington House is a lovable experience. I had a solo tour with the help of the personal, virtual audio tour guide. I got to see the rooms, kitchen, the mini museum upstairs with artifacts. I was able to experience the tunnel walk. The whole tour cost just 20 USD.

  • 4/5 Vesper C. 1 year ago on Google
Really enjoyed the self-guided tour. The house itself isn't too large, and the audio guide is a bit longer than necessary but there are several spots where you can stop and sit to listen to the whole thing if you'd like to as they have a lovely garden at the back of the house. There's also a film about George Washington's time in Barbados which is very informative - and in a room with air-conditioning. The Garrison tunnel that runs under the area is also very interesting and a different experience so would recommend going down there, but again you would have to walk exceptionally slowly if you want to hear the entire audio guide. The only thing I was disappointed with is that the cafe was closed (and I was parched) but I hope they will be able to open that again soon!

It is a interesting place and helps you learn some history about G Washington. The place is small, only takes 30 mins to watch and the ticket is expensive (40 BBD per person), I feel this place does not worth the price

Very interesting to visit and learn about Washingtons early life. Also a great way to obtain knowledge about life in Barbados and how slaves were used at the plantations. The explanations well illustrated . The tunnels where really great to walk through , think children especially might like it . The young lady at the ticket desk was very helpful and lovely to talk to . The coffeeshop at the end a wonderfully cool place for a good coffee and a rest . All in all a successful day .

Not bad for those interested in history, tickets cost USD20. It takes about 15min max to see everything and extra 20 min if you enter the cinema for the house documentary. Nice ice cream at the cafe.

  • 5/5 Claire G. 1 year ago on Google
Great piece of history if that is your thing. Doesn't take long to walk around and enjoyed the short cinema film explaining the history. Also went through the old tunnel - but don't do it if you are claustrophobic. It is a little pricey but if the money is used to maintain that piece of history then I don't mind paying it.

If you have an interest in history I would say do the combo tour of Garrison and George Washington House. You see the tunnels, visit the beach, walk around other historic points in the area. The tour is lead by a very knowledgeable guide who keep you engaged.

We visited the coffee house next to George Washington House. The service was amazing. The coffee was excellent and super strong. A peaceful setting but for the annoying techno music that was playing and skipping. When sitting outdoors in the garden bewarned of critters spiders and bugs. Giving this 4 stats for the service.

An excellent experience into the historic connection between the USA and Barbados . The property is well maintained, staff are welcoming and informative. The tour itself is well set up , from the House to the tunnel to the info-film . Cafe is wonderful, casual and professionally run . All in all a worthwhile and must-do adventure !!!

It's ok. A house of an important person. So it's pretty and impressive. The bar nearby is quite posh, the service great and friendly. I wasn't inside. Outside was fine.

We loved visiting the house that George and Lawrence Washington stayed in while visiting Barbados. Our guide was extremely informative . We did not see a video or the tunnels. But just the story of the Washington's visit and the little museum on the second floor was great. The story of their sea voyage, how they came to stay in this house and George's case of the small pox was very interesting to us.

Incredibly renovated building with loads of local and national history. Staff were especially accommodating considering the slow pace of tourism at the moment. The gardens are spectacular and the amount of greenery makes it a beautiful stop during a blisteringly sunny day. The tunnels weren't accessible as they double as a storm drain!
