One
of
the
interesting
things
to
see
at
Palace
Square
in
St.
Petersburg
is
the
Alexander
Column
which
is
situated
in
the
centre
of
the
square
between
the
Winter
Palace
and
the
Building
of
the
General
Staff.
The
monument
was
constructed
between
1830-34
by
French
architect
Auguste
de
Montferrand
and
is
named
after
Emperor
Alexander
I
who
ruled
Russia
from
1801-1825.
It
is
red
granite
and
24.5
meters
tall,
topped
by
a
statue
figure
of
an
angel
holding
a
cross.
The
pedestal
is
quite
decorative
with
bas-reliefs
on
each
side.
The
column
is
flanked
by
two
lamp
posts
and
there
is
a
cast
iron
railing
around
the
monument.
Collectively,
it
makes
for
an
attractive
monument
arrangement.
In
the
end,
if
you
enjoy
monuments,
this
is
a
nice
one
to
see.
You
can
take
nice
pictures
by
standing
right
in
front
of
the
General
Staff
building.
Here
you
see
the
Alexander
Column
in
front
of
the
Winter
Palace
building.
