Truly a wonder of the ancient world, and the principal cultural treasure of the Kingdon of Jordan. It's worth the trip. We spent a day there and only saw the things on the main path. There are many other sites off the main trail. We could have spent two or three days exploring it all. We should have got our admission tickets at the airport when we obtained our visas. Don't forget Little Petra - if you have the time. Water, sunblock, a hat, and good shoes are a must. You can pay to be driven/carried all the way to the Monastery. So many vendors. In some places they ruined the atmosphere of it. But they have a right to be there - It's their home. Just don't buy anything from children.

Gorgeous place! Go early to beat the crowds. Did not enjoy the continuous hassling, especially by the Bedouin kids. When you go: don't ride a horse, donkey or camel when you're clearly too heavy (like most of us). Think logically please and don't contribute to this animal cruelty.

The landscape was unique and beautiful, and do I need to explain why the city carved in mountain is amazing. It’s definitely a challenging hike given the hot weather. Make sure you bring plenty of water and wear comfortable clothes.

The "Lost City of Petra", hidden deep in the shimmering Arabian desert in Jordan, is one of the most archaeological and mystical wonders of all time. When trade routes moved to the sea, Petra slowly declined and was finally abandoned by the 7th century A.D. and lay forgotten for over 12 centuries until its discovery in 1812. Petra is said to date to around 300 B.C. and hailed by the BBC as "one of the top 40 places you just have to see before you die". It definitely is!!! This 2,000-year-old city, an entire city hand carved and sculpted out of sheer rock, is truly a man made spectacle not to be missed! Petra is certainly one of those rare destinations that lives up to expectations. An amazing experience. Join me in my journey starting at the "Petra Visitor Center". I'm sure, like me, you'll be telling all your family and friends about it. Highly recommended!

Petra is truly a wonder of its own and absolutely worth the visit. You should cover the entrance fee with the Jordan Pass. Plan a full day and start early in the day. A lot of people recommend 2 days. We did one full day and another day where we hiked in from little Petra. And it was well worth the time. Don’t fall for tourist traps like monkey riding or guide that show you up some stairs. Everything you can see is for free (after the entrance). Petra by night was not recommended to us - we were told that the pictures of it look more amazing than the real life experience. But again we didn’t go for it, so I can not say something how it is.

Petra (from πέτρα, rock in Greek) is an archaeological site in Jordan, located about 250 km south of the capital Amman, in a basin between the mountains east of the Wadi Araba, the great valley that extends from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba of the Red Sea. Petra is one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The visit of the site is quite demanding as it involves a fairly long path to which you have to add a tiring climb of a few kilometers to climb the mountain where the Monastery is located. Along the way there are several archaeological sites and small annexed museums, all very suggestive and interesting. The visit of the site takes a whole day and it is advisable to go with an expert guide to be able to enjoy the visit to the fullest, capturing all the details. There are no refreshment points along the route except at the entrance to the archaeological site and at the foot of the monastery slope where a usually very crowded restaurant is located. Ultimately a place to visit absolutely in life.

The ancient city of Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan’s southwestern desert. Petra is famous for its tombs, temples, churches and houses which are all carved into pink sandstone cliffs; earning its nickname, the “Rose City”. It’s Jordan’s most-visited attraction and part of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Established around 300 BC and only discovered by the western world in 1812. The indigenous people (Bedouin) of Petra were nomadic Arabs who used this city as a major trading hub. Petra became an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. The last indigenous Arabs slowly left Petra as the site became incredibly popular for thousands of tourists. I stayed at Petra Gate Hotel in the small town of Wadi Musa which is just a few 100 metres away from the entrance of Petra. The hotel also offer lunch packages which you can bring with you to Petra. Very convenient as the restaurants inside Petra are touristy expensive. I only had 1 day for Petra which is way too short for this enormous site. Be prepared to walk and climb a lot if you want to get the most out of Petra. I had to squeeze everything into 1 day and doing so I ended up making 25 km to see the highlights of Petra. If you have more time I would advice to buy a multi-day ticket. Let me guide you through the fascinating world of Petra.

The monastery walk, Petra during the day and most amazing - Petra by Nights event! It is a mind blowing and explosive experience. One I will not be forgetting so soon. Petra! Red Rose City. Love it always! Petra! World Wonder!!!

There are no words to describe. You must visit and see for yourself... beautiful, stunning views. Make sure you have one full day at the list 6 hours. I spent 2 days and wasn't enough. Staff is super helpful, especially the security at the bus stop who helped me so much. Thank you. I took a buggy the second day as it helped me time wise to visit the monastery and get further and quicker. Make sure you have good walking shoes, hat 👒, sun protection, and water. There are plenty of places you can stop for tea and lunch at the Nabatean restaurant. Buy a Jordan Pass before you arrive. It includes your visa and tourist sides

Very wonderful and charming, but you must pay attention to the treatment of donkeys in a good way by the children of the region. I did not like the absence of the children of the region in schools and their presence to work in Petra

A must visit. Great for history lovers and those who want to hike. A couple of tips, go early morning (6am) in order to get the best tips. The hike to the view point and the monastery is something you should do if you are able to hike in the sun for long hours. Plenty of shops inside the site if you run out of water and locals will keep offering you tea as well. If you can afford a tour guide, it would definitely add to the experience as there isn’t much signage explaining things inside the site.

Absolutely breathtaking!! It was so amazing to visit this place the first time that I had to go back and experience it again. This place really does take you back in time. I visited during August and also in September. Both months were very very warm so plan on wearing loose fitting clothing and bring plenty of sunscreen and water. Definitely make sure you have plenty of time to explore the entire area, I probably spent about 8 hours there and will say that was sufficient time to see what we wanted to see!

Lots of walking. Don't forget to take water and comfy shoes! The views are awesome! It really feels unreal. For those of us history nerds, you'll have a visual feast. So much to see, to experience and enjoy. I walked around 26km during my one-day visit, so...yeah, lots of walking! You've been warned. Enjoyable visit and higly recommend going. Go early!! That way you avoid all the large tourist groups that arrive at around 7:30am-8:00am (so yeah, arrive before that!). That way you get cool pictures without many people!

I visited Petra twice. I can say with confidence that this is definitely an interesting part of world history. The buildings and architecture of those days (as I understand the buildings 2000-3000 years ago) are amazing, how people built it without the technology we have today. Roman amphitheater. And they are still standing. Of course, deep conclusions can be drawn from their history, although historical information differs depending on which source you listen to. I encourage you to go up to the building at the end of Petra, which has approximately 960 steps up to it - it's worth it. There is an amazing view there! In general, if you are in Jordan, please do not miss this opportunity to visit Petra and delve into its history. Highly recommend!

(Translated by Google) I don't know who, but we flew to Jordan for the sake of Petra and the Wadi Rum desert. Petra is beauty and delight, uniqueness and mystery. We were in early May. The heat is incredible. Therefore, I would advise to go here in winter. One day is too little for Petra. I suppose that you can get around all the corners if you come at 6 am and leave at 6 pm. We only had 5-6 hours of time. We managed to reach the restaurant. If we had been in reserve for another hour and a half, we would have reached the monastery. We didn't climb into caves or churches, we didn't climb the canyons - there was no time. In principle, walking is not very tiring, I thought it would be harder. A headdress, comfortable sneakers, water are required. A day is enough for a quick inspection, for a more detailed one you need a couple of days.

(Translated by Google) Where I am? Petra Jordan Historical site Volodymyr Prudnikov 5358 points month ago Petra is an ancient city, in the past the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, now the most popular tourist attraction in Jordan, one of the seven modern wonders of the world. In Petra we got from the Egyptian city of Taba, first by boat across the bay to Aqaba, and then by tourist bus. drove through the desert where from time to time we met lonely trees and Bedouin tents. From the place where we were dropped off the bus, we walked for another 20 minutes, this distance could also be covered by a camel, or by carriage. Walking along the canyon we were looking forward to meeting with this extraordinary city about which we read a lot and watched broadcasts. After passing a rather narrow gorge, we opened our mouths to a stunning view that suddenly opened before us. Before us was the main temple of Petra El-Khazne. It is perfectly preserved, although it was built in the first century. We spent a long time examining the temple, admiring the talent of the people who skillfully cut it out in the rock. Petra occupies a fairly large territory, where you can see the amphitheater, the legacy colonnades Romans, crypts, monastery. For entertainment you can ride a camel, buy a local souvenir, take pictures with a beautiful background. Petra is really beautiful and although the path to her is not close, it's worth it. Petra established possibly as early as 312 BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans, it is a symbol of Jordan, as well as Jordan's most-visited tourist attraction. It lies on the slope of Jebel al-Madhbah (identified by some as the biblical Mount Hor in a basin among the mountains which form the eastern flank of Arabah (Wadi Araba), the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. It is believed that Petra was home to roughly 30,000 people and was abandoned in the year 106 A.D. Site has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 1985. Petra area is something like 3000 - 3500 ft. above sea level. HOT during summer months. February till April should be OK, later the weather turns unpredictable (Dusty), not healthy & not good for photography either. September till November should also be OK. Hints for Photographers: 1-UV filter is recommended as to protect lens from dust & to reduce high UV level affecting exposures. 2- Wide angle lens is also recommended as some places are tight. If you have a DSLR camera then you may need a 12 - 24 mm lens. There will be much walking on the sand, tour may take several hours....It is worth it.

The petra represents a huge heritage that inhabited in these colorful stones. It is very beautiful, colorful, breathtaking and spread over a large area. Passing through these colorful stones, we see theaters, treasury, monasteries, tombs, temples, churches, houses, stone arts and many topography and it gives a wonderful experience. It is so huge that we get tired but it does not end. The most special of these is the pink sandstone cliff which named it Rose City.

(Translated by Google) This place is really very interesting and memorable for me. Imagine a building carved into a rock, very tall, majestic and sturdy. The architecture is amazing. There are amphitheaters, former drains, caves, former palaces, museums, statues, water pools, carvings in rock etc. We can ride a camel, horse or car to go to the palace ... especially for the elderly, who are disabled / use wheelchairs. We recommend that you wear a hat because it is hot during the day, understand the desert area, bring water and wear sports shoes. Many photo objects are Instangable, very interesting n not satisfied for only a day. Arsitektur nya begitu luar biasa. Disana ada Amphiteater, Bekas Saluran Air, Gua2, bekas Istana, Museum, Patung2, Kolam air, Ukiran2 di batu cadas dll Kita bisa naik Onta, kuda atau mobil utk menuju istana tsb...khusus bagi Lansia, yg cacat/pakai kursi roda. Sebaiknya pakai topi Krn siang hari panas terik, maklum daerah gurun, bawa air putih n pakai sepatu sports. Banyak obyek foto yg Instangable, sangat menarik n tak puas hanya sehari.

One of the oldest inhabitant places dating back to 7000 BC. Petra was the capital of the Nabataeans in the 2nd BC. They were nomadic Arabs that used the location for trade routes. Because of its large size intricate design it is considered a wonder of the world.

This is one of the most magical historical place on this planet. It is huge, and if you are interested to get to know it take your time, do not rush. Look around and enjoy the marvellous land. The stunning and colourful stones around. Recommend to start from the back. There is a 30-45 minutes trail to get to the Monastery. Few people take this way. If you like nature, rocks, bedouin tea than you will be amazed. And you have to take the 1200 steps only 1 way down 🤫 Bring cash with you if you want to buy tea or water from bedouins. In some shops you can pay by card over 5 JOD.

My first world wonder. Amazing! Everything you see is spectacular. But you have to know that you need to walk a lot! Wear comfortable shoes because they can be damaged. It opens at 6 am so if you go early on, you get it all for yourself. At night, the show is very transporting. AMAZING.

Simply amazing. There are a lot of kilometers of steps to walk until the biggest temple but it's worth it. There was something I didn't expect: a lot of local people acting like your shadow in order to get some money from you. They are quite annoying and you have to skip them every single time. I strongly recommend visiting this place once in your life.

The highlight of our trip to Jordan. It's incredible, much bigger than we thought (we did a 18km-long hike!), and it's just amazing. We did pack water, hat, sunblock and a portable battery-driven fan, but the temperature was actually not that high (around 23-25 degrees). You will sweat, though, especially if you climb to the Monastery, so light breathable clothing is recommended. The local community tries to sell you stuff, but they're not clinging, and a "No" is usually enough if you're not interested in buying anything. There's a restaurant owned by Crowne Plaza that serves a buffet (it was clean and the food was good), and on your wait out, there's the Cave Bar which is convenient if you have to wait for your hotel transfer, as you can drink something cool there and use the hotel's restroom to do your thing and clean your hands and face (and shoes! They have a polishing machine there, very practical!). It was an excellent day tour, and you should try to enjoy every minute of it! P.S.: although I loved Petra, there's only a negative thing: the animals seem miserable and the Animal Protection Society or the government should look into this, because they seem to be abused by the locals and exploited for tourism purposes. That was heartbreaking, but apart from that, loved Petra.

Petra is an absolutely stunning destination, and it exceeded all of my expectations. The ancient city is truly a marvel of human achievement, and the sheer scale of the structures is awe-inspiring. Walking through the narrow canyon and emerging to see the Treasury for the first time is an experience that I will never forget. The intricate carvings and attention to detail are remarkable, and it's easy to spend hours exploring this area alone. But Petra is so much more than just the Treasury. The Monastery is another highlight, and the hike to reach it is well worth the effort. Along the way, you'll pass by a variety of other structures and ruins, each with their own unique story. One thing that really stood out to me was the natural beauty surrounding Petra. The rock formations are absolutely stunning, and there are plenty of hiking trails to explore the area further. Whether you want to go for a leisurely walk or a more challenging hike, there's something for everyone. Overall, Petra is a destination that I would highly recommend to anyone. It's a true wonder of the world, and the combination of history, architecture, and natural beauty is truly unparalleled.

Basically a new world wonder run by a band of barbarians! I was catching glimpses of marvels of nature and man craftsmanship combined, but I was mostly looking at my feet trying to avoid stepping into the dung. Camels, donkeys, horses and even dogs are mistreated and used in most awful ways just so organised mafia of locals can pull up a few extra dinars from the tourists. To be perfectly honest there wouldn't be any of this if park officials and management didn't allow and probably profit from whole scheme. 5 stars for the sights - 1 star for the whole experience

A guide is recommended. Ours was informative and insightful. There is so much to take in. Lots of history and visual interests. The stone carvings are amazing with sculptured detail that withstands the test of time. Visit the site during cool temperatures. It was 115 during our visit. Bring lots of water. Visit the restaurant and take a break. Lots of opportunities to ride a horse, donkey or camel to the sites if you get tired. This site is famous for movie sets. The visit is worth the trip. Plan on hiking for at least 14 miles. Wear comfortable footwear. Bring snacks to refill your energy during the hike. Jordan is the holy land with beautiful people, culture and good food.

(Translated by Google) Pétra (from πέτρα petra, “rock” in ancient Greek; البتراء Al-Butrāʾ in Arabic), from its Semitic name Reqem or Raqmu (“the Bariolea”), is a Nabataean city located in the south of present-day Jordan. It is the major tourist pole of this country. Created in Antiquity, towards the end of the 8th century BC. AD, by the Edomites, it was then occupied around the sixth century BC. AD by the Nabataeans who made it prosper thanks to its position on the caravan route transporting incense, spices and other precious products between southern Arabia, Egypt, Syria and the Mediterranean . By the 7th century, the modification of trade routes and earthquakes led to the gradual abandonment of the city. Petra sheltered at its peak up to 25,000 inhabitants. Fallen into oblivion in modern times, the site was rediscovered in 1812 by the Western world thanks to the Swiss explorer Jean Louis Burckhardt. The many buildings, whose monumental facades were directly carved into the rock, make it a unique ensemble which has been inscribed, since December 6, 1985, on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area around the site has also been a national archaeological park since 1993. Erosion, rains and tourism - in constant progression since the end of the twentieth century - are however a threat to the preservation of the site and actions are being taken to stop the destruction of the monuments.

The city is located on the slopes of Jabal al-Madbah, between a group of steep rocky mountains that form the northwestern flank of the Arabian Peninsula, specifically Wadi Araba, which extends from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. Petra was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985. [6] It was also chosen as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. Petra (Arabic: ٱلْبَتْرَاء‎, romanized: Al-Batrāʾ; Ancient Greek: Πέτρα, "Rock"), originally known to its inhabitants in as Raqmu or Raqēmō (𐢚𐢛𐢓𐢈),[3][4] is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan. Petra lies around Jabal Al-Madbah in a basin surrounded by mountains which form the eastern flank of the Arabah valley that runs from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba.[5] The area around Petra has been inhabited from as early as 7000 BC,[6] and the Nabataeans might have settled in what would become the capital city of their kingdom, as early as the 4th century BC.[7] However, archaeological work has only discovered evidence of Nabataean presence dating back to the second century BC,[8] by which time Petra had become their capital.[6] The Nabataeans were nomadic Arabs who invested in Petra's proximity to the trade routes by establishing it as a major regional trading hub.[6][9]

(Translated by Google) Yes, this place will not leave you indifferent. especially the red desert with its dust storms. This is something. I had a funny case here. There is a long narrow gorge at the entrance to the historic complex. This is the corridor to the main gate. Otherwise, you can't get here. In this gorge, an elderly man approached me and showed me an ancient Roman coin, which he allegedly found here. She really looked very old and genuine. He bid $ 100. After half an hour of trading, I bought it from him for $ 5. And happy came to the complex. My surprise knew no bounds when I saw there similar coins that lay in bulk on the ground and were sold for one cent) (Original)

The “Rose-red City,” capital of the Nabataean Kingdom, famous for the tombs and temples carved into its sandstone cliffs. The nomadic Nabataean people settled in the desert mountains of present-day southern Jordan more than 10,000 years ago, founding a settlement, Raqmu, that was to become a trading center for the region. Trade with the Greek and Roman empires brought prosperity, and the growing city became known as Petra, Greek for “stone.” Carved into the rock. Petra’s location in steep-sided mountain gorges led the Nabataeans to develop a distinctive architecture, carving tombs and temples that mimicked the Greco-Roman Classical style but also included some characteristically Nabataean elements. The finest examples of this are the famous Al-Khazneh (“the Treasury,” although it is in fact a mausoleum) at the entrance to the city and the Monastery, Al-Deir (actually a hilltop temple). Also of note is the row of four Royal Tombs—the Tomb of Urns, Silk Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Palace Tomb—each featuring a different Classical genre. The city also has a huge theater hewn from the rock and a small number of free-standing buildings, such as the Qasr-al-Bint, the main temple of the city. Several of the soft sandstone buildings have suffered from erosion, and even in the best preserved ones the details have lost clarity.

The most amazing place on the Near East. The city of ghosts may have emerged from an oriental fairy-tale. You enter a long, dark and winding tunnel with high cliffs. Colors of rocks change between red, blue and dark. After half of our hour the tunnel ends with striking flesh of light - and you see beautiful rock-hewn tomb. It actually seems a palace, rather than a tomb. And then there are so many other interesting things to explore in this wonderful location. Other royal tombs, remnants of walls and palaces.

Prepare comfortable shoes. If you want to see everything you may need 6-7 hours. And this is if you keep your breaks really short. It is not too hard, but definitely not for everyone. The main sight is on an easy distance, around 4-5 km in one way. And there are electric golf cars.

An amazing place and a must see if you are visiting Jordan. The walk to the monastery from the visitor center is long and the last 45 minutes at least is all uphill. So be prepared with sunglasses and chilled water in a flask. My suggestion would be not to use the horses or donkeys to go up the hill as it seems like a cruel experience for the animals.

  • 5/5 Dilafruz S. 1 year ago on Google
We had a private guided tour for two people and we spent a whole day here and it still wasn't enough. We had time to explore only the small percentage of architecture on the main path but there was so much more to see. Mind you, we were not stopping to take copious amounts of photos or climbing to the top to get photos of the Treasury for the Insta. There is just simply so much to see there. We had to rush through most of it so that we would also have time to explore the Little Petra. I would say once you see this place, there is really nothing to see in Little Petra that will blow you away. You must be in great health and must be able to walk in scorching heat if you want to explore this place fully. Alternatively, you can explore up until the Treasury, take photos from the top and just head back. But you will miss the real wealth this place offers. The Treasury isn't even the tip of the iceberg. I highly recommend to hire a horse to at least get you from the gate to near the Treasury because you will be able to conserve energy to explore the rest of the area by yourself on foot. The walk from the gate to the Treasury is easily 30-40 minutes for young people in good shape. We didn't do that so we were truly exhausted by the end of it. Best way to see this place is to explore it for at least 2 days, if you have time.

Petra, one of the natural seven wonders of the world. I hope everyone is it a chance to visit. If you do I would encourage you to get a tour guide. Do you have an option of walking down the valley which again I would highly encourage you to do. You can ride a golf cart up if you have mobility issues. It is a pretty long walk back up hills so I would do that if you are not good walking long distance. There are a lot of things to see that you can explore past the treasury which is the main attraction. You can also pay $10-$15 and ride a camel. It was a very good experience but you have to be careful because you need to have a good balance. they do sell water and food and other drinks at the bottom so you don’t really need to carry anything in on the way up you could walk halfway and ride a horse halfway that is a pretty fun option as well.

Well worth trying to walk all the way up to the monastery (not just the treasure). Is a bit of a trek but totally worth it, and much quieter as only around 10-20% of visitors go there

What an amazing sight to see. We went early and start at 7 am, this was nice because a lot of the crowds were not there at the time so it was quick to get a ticket and most attractions did not have too many tourists around them. We saw almost everything and even did a long hike to see the top of the Treasury. It took us around 7 hours. We also came here in August, I would not recommend due to the heat. My favorites were Al Siq, the Treasury and the Monastery. Glad to be able to see Petra and cross off something else from my bucket list.
