This was my first time trying Ghanian food and it was AMAZING! Highly recommended. It was so good I had to go back for a second bowl. Tried the shrimp bowl and the veggie bowl with black eyed peas. They both come with a spicy sauce which was delicious. The owner was very friendly. Will definitely be coming back!

Good stuff, nice sized portions and tasy food. Rice is a bit dry but tasty. Would def like to try some of the other items, had the shrimp and asked for spicy but wasnt super spicy. Recommend if in the area!

If you haven't been here, you're missing out! I was walking in the neighborhood and the food smelled really good from outside so I stopped in. Best decision ever! The staff was friendly and the wait was not long. If I'm ever in town again I will be returning to try more things on the menu.

Definitely the best meal I’ve had throughout my entire trip in Portland. The jollof rice, chicken and plantain was amazing. I am glad I got two bowls cos it was worth it.

Back before the pandemic changed everything, I worked in downtown Portland, and we hit the food carts usually at least once a week. One cart that I enjoyed on a regular basis was Black Star Grill, serving up some delicious Ghanaian food. Imagine my surprise to see it opening a takeout counter just a few blocks from my house. Finally tried it this weekend and was not disappointed. The jollof rice was amazing, as is the black-eyed pea stew, especially with some fried plantains on the side. We’re both vegans, so that’s pretty much the only options, but there are plenty of other choices for meat eaters. Great food, great prices and nice people. Looking forward to eating there again soon.

Excellent restaurant with a friendly owner. This is the physical location of the popular food truck. It's located in a house with a parking lot, which is very helpful for the area. I got the chicken rice bowl with a side of the fried shrimp. The chicken came over a bed of flavorful jollof rice with a salad. There was also a tangy, spicy red sauce that came with it. The chicken and rice were both delicious. The shrimp was breaded and fried and came with a delightful sauce. I highly recommend it. My favorite was the drink. I can't remember what it was called, but it was a purple-colored fruit juice. I honestly can't even figure out what was in it, but it was sweet with a bit of a ginger bite and delicious. Check these guys out!

I ordered a pick up from here and it was nicely packaged but also wow the food was so good. I had joloff rice with the black eyed peas stew, fried plantains, and beef. The red sauce that comes with it is so delicious! Perfect compliment to the rest of the meal.

Got "The Kev" [Beef, Chicken, Jollof Rice, Black-eyed-Pea Stew & Fried Plantains] Spicy and it was amazing. Definitely check it out. The cart is located in the Chevron parking lot.

Great food, great service, a lot of value. Have had multiple things off the menu and enjoyed them all. Fried plantains are great. Only trick is finding a time when the cart is open!

Hooray for Jallof! I just got back from Ghana and have really been missing the food. I was not let down! The Jallof Shrimp Bowl was just what I needed. Now if only they would add Tuo Zaafi or Kenkey and Tilapia to the menu! 🙏

The vegan bowl is delicious - black eyed pea stew with rice and steamed veggies that are well seasoned, sweet fried plantains and a side of hot sauce. It’s good!

Without a doubt, some of the best food in Portland!!!! I used to come nonstop when this was a food cart down by PSU. I have been googling it every 6 months wondering if it was open or not after the pandemic hit, and I finally got a chance to come. I got the shrimp basket & a side of Jollof rice, definitely the go-to.

I just picked up Black Star Grill for the first time this evening and shared with my family. It was terrific. The rice mixed with the sauces they provided was incredible and the meat and the plantains were perfect. Overall great experience. The owner/chef was delightful and I look forward to returning. Highly recommend!

Gotta love pdx carts for their variety, and Black Star is my new favorite. Delicious, healthy and very generous portions. Excellent.

Tried the shrimp basket with plantains and spicy slaw. Honestly some of the best food I’ve ever had, the seasoning, breading, and cook on the shrimp was all exceptional the slaw had the right amount of heat and the sauce they give you on the side is amazing. I also tried their chicken with Jollof rice. I recommend you pour the sauce all over the rice and chicken it definitely enhances the experience. I’ll definitely be back!! Thank you for feeding my soul.

Wow!!! This place left me and my girlfriend speechless. Went to pick up an order from previously trying it earlier from the truck, but this time, I went to the location. Great comforting atmosphere. Food presentation on point. The sauces are different yet familiar, which is best I can explain, but good combined. I had the shrimp by itself. Loved it. Customer service is great with a smile, friendly energy, and my definition of customer service. They went above and beyond with patience in getting an understanding of the order. Food prepared in a timely manner where you are not wondering where your meal is at. It's definitely a top 5 for me.

I can't say enough good things about this grill. I ordered the Classic Jollof Bowl and the chicken was a perfect combo of crispy and tender and the plantains were great too. The service was very friendly and attentive.

Amazing food with tones of flavor. The chef/owner is really nice as well! I would recommend it if you are in the area. The black eyed peas stew is perfect on a cold/rainy day

The chicken jollof bowl was amazing. Spicy though! If you don't like spice, you'll want to ask for a mild form of it. Also the guy running the cart is really nice!
