The place is quite eccentric, old fashioned and although the word is overused these days "quirky." However, the guy Christophe is a modern miracle, on the one hand he is a throw back to the days of courteous, charming and constantly available hotel managers, but on the other hand, he has a modern outlook, familiar with the old and new school of finances and other countries, and has a family....! Which you'd never expect considering he seems to keep less socially acceptable hours than Dracula, whom he has a passing resemblance to (maybe the lounge version of Dracula), down to the cravat and the dark hair. The rooms are comfy and made me feel like I'd travelled back to the 60s or 70s, or the Overlook Hotel, or The Grand Budapest Hotel, or somewhere in the middle. The food was very good, the staff were quietly attentive and we were looked after incredibly well. I would go back, and I would want to stay here again.

Our second stay at Villa Excelsior and we couldn't be happier. Christof and his staff is very accommodating in planning your stay in bad Gastein and making it a memorable experience. The half-board food option is recommended. We liked the options to choose from and the food was delicious. Strongly recommend a stay here!

A truly marvellous place, with amazing interiors, views of the valley, great hosts and wonderful food. Its exceptional atmosphere makes it a perfect destination for all romantics, art lovers, dreamers, Wes Anderson's fans and all those who seek for sth more than the usual alpine experience. The owners put a lot of love into every detail. Loved it!

The best hotel I've ever stayed in. Warm, welcoming staff, cozy rooms and gorgeous fin-de-siecle furniture in the hallways. Like stepping back in time when hospitality still meant something. Breakfast and dinner were on another level. Excellent value for money overall.

This place deserves 6 stars out of 5! I can not think of one single fault. To me it feels like having the privilege of staying overnight inside a “museum” that brings you back to around 1900, only with wifi ;-) The owner and staff are very friendly. From day 1 Mr Erharter called me by my own name. The service is exceptional, for example when I added more nights but that meant I would get a new room, they moved all my stuff for me and all I needed to pack were my toiletries, the rest they took care of moving. Price-wise there is no single supplement and there are quite a lot of solo travelers or people staying there for weeks on end. The food served is very good and if you have personal wishes they don’t mind at all, for example if I wanted all the starters (instead of choosing 1) and no main course. The sauna is good, with a nice resting area as well. The massage therapist is excellent. And you can also pay to do a thermal bath in the special spring water with radon. The price is very good value for what it gets you. The town Bad Gastein and the surrounding mountains also offer plenty to see and do for a week or more. Mr Erharter and all the others, thank you for a wonderful stay, I will definitely be back some time!

We loved our stay. The service was exceptional. As was the warmth and caring of the welcome and helpful directions and information. Others in our group tried the bath (it was lovely) and the massage (she was very gifted). Highly highly recommended. Since we are a Freud Tour we especially appreciate the owners being so fascinated and knowledgeable about the history of his visits and their help translating the note in his handwriting (framed and hung in “his” room).

A historical hotel/villa with a wonderful full service spa. Breakfast was wonderful. While some may consider parts of the hotel dated there is an elegance to everything, a warmth from all the staff, and nobody is on a clock. Completely relaxing seems to be how everything is geared and yet you are adjacent to so much beauty for sightseeing. There is a chapel in the hotel and yoga is also practiced in the hotel. You have an elevator and easy in and out access. Parking is easier than in most of Bad Gastein although can be tight when the hotel is full.
