Our food was amazing. We made reservations 2 days beforehand and received phenomenal service and wine service. The wine flavors, smells, and tastes were great. We even had the opportunity to take sangria to-go. I'm not a fan of sangria because of the sweetness, but my friend loved it. Food was authentic and the atmosphere was great. Would highly recommend with reservations.

This place was amazing! The Arepas are reasonably priced and the "poison" drinks are mixed in house with herbs. I would definitely recommend the Pabellón. We were waited on by one of the owners who is from Venezuela and really knows how to make his guest feel right at home. My entree of beef in malbec reduction with potato gratin was delicious! Finished off with flan and decaf coffee. We went back for a second time during our short trip. Personally we don’t understand the hype around this place. We had a salad Argentina and Melon with Serano ham to start with, both excellent. A very good wine selection is available, also by glass. The service brought white wine instead of the ordered red. Mistakes can happen. Then the beef for the main course arrived. For an Argentinian steakhouse a total disappointing. One beef was not tender at all. Impossible to eat. Never happened before in an Argentinian restaurant. They immediately changed it for a new piece, which was fine. The other piece of beef contained 30 % fat, which is good for the taste but not in that quantity. All in all not a good choice.

They have a pretty good wine selection, and good reds to go with the meat. I walked around Barrio Escalante last night in search of a small dinner and cocktails and ended up at Colonia Tovar Arepas & Bar. The outside patio area was lovely but it was a bit too chilly to sit outside. I ended up sitting at the bar. I started with Arepitas Fritos - Little fried arepas with 3 dipping sauces, one guac based, one ranch based and a spicy one. SO GOOD! I find myself craving those already. For my meal I had one of the Arepas with chicken and pesto (I don't remember the name). Since I had cheese in the starter, I wanted something "brighter" for dinner and this did not disappoint. It was a good mix of Italian flavorings with the classic Arepa. To drink I had one of their homemade elixers: Envenenáte. Similar to a sangria, it was fruity, flavorful and not overly sweet. The locals that came in were chatty and easy to talk to. So far, this is my favorite place in the San Jose area. Highly recommend!

La Esquina de Buenos Aires is not the case, you walk in , and it’s in an urban environment. So may say downtown San Jose is not the most appealing environment, but for me, not feeling in a US-style shopping “plaza” , it makes definitely a difference.

The french onion soup was done in a slightly different style than I expected, with less bread and no cheese melted over the top, but it was very flavorful and packed with onions. The strip steak was cooked perfectly and the chimichurri that came with it was just the right complement. Great wines with generous pours and the service was great as well. Very friendly and everyone I interacted with was very accommodating and spoke English well.

However both meats had pieces of inedible gristle that made the experience much less enjoyable. Sangria was delightful, as were the two sauces served with our mains. For sides, we chose the linguini and the potatoes. Dessert of Panqueque de Dulce de Leche was also enjoyable. Service was attentive, and the outfitting of the insides loaned itself to a slightly dim, cozy vibe.

After 7 years this is still my favorite restaurant in Costa Rica. The building is a perfect romantic ambiance. The wine selection is amazing. This place came highly recommended and we were very excited to give it a try. We were seated by an open window and had an unpleasant aroma wafting in for our visit. Server seemed preoccupied and wanted to take our order before asking about drinks or appetizers. Wine was delicious once ordered (Argentinian cab) and the pour was very generous. For our meals we ordered the beef tenderloin in Malbec and rosemary sauce — the beef was tender but the sauce was very gelatinous and the only rosemary was a tiny sprig on top. Overall it wasn’t bad, but I was expecting a lot more for $50 CND. Also had the lasagna — we enjoyed it more than the beef, but again was mostly average. Of the meals we have had in Costa Rica so far this was the most expensive and we enjoyed it the least.
