Another great little gem of San Antonio. Free to see and wheelchair friendly. There are some animals roaming around the courtyard and there's museum towards the back. You can take your time enjoying the exibits or simply sit outside enjoying the small gardens and animals in the area. Either its very relaxing.

We didn't get into the museum, it was closed for the day so we just wandered the quadrangle. What a beautiful spot. So peaceful and quiet. It's amazing to see the deer, peafowl and geese wandering about without fear.

The museum is inside a military base. The admission is free but you need to get a permit from the visitor center first, which is a few miles away. To get the permission is easy, driver licenses and car insurance are required. There is no clear sign where the museum is although it is very close to the entrance. The museum has some old weapons and explains the history of this place. Outside the building, there are fears and peacocks.

I had heard there were peacocks at the quad, but was not sure what people meant by that. I was not expecting this beautiful quad with free roaming peacocks all around. There were also some small deer 🦌 on the property. There is a quarter feed bird feed dispenser on site for the peacocks too. What an unexpected experience.

Awesome! Waited 45min for a visitor pass with 3 toddlers, fun lol. But totally worth it. We bought feed at the museum and took a quick walk through of the displays of uniforms and old weapons to get to the bathrooms. Cool and I don't care about military history. There was a 1941 movie playing in the museum that was partly filmed in the Quadrangle, very cool. Then went out and had like 10-15 peacocks following us around for food, some will eat out of your hand, turning your head to the side so they can only see one eye will help them trust that you're not a predator. Same with the deer. They have a hard time seeing food in the grass, a little better at seeing it on the road. Deer are friendly, they love the kids because they are shorter. So take a knee before they turn away from you, hold out your hand, head to the side. They will come to you if they want food. Please take your trash with you!

The quadrangle is closed to the public unless you know someone that knows someone as there were tourists when we got there but we were not allowed in. I was sad and disappointed as we served here 24 years ago and wanted to remember old times. There were deer and peacocks and we had brought food but they couldn’t come :(.

This was a beautiful experience and very peaceful atmosphere overall. Once you enter, you feel very calm and can see the history here. They also have a museum on the right side with a very informative tour. The director is very knowledgeable and loves her job. They are very good at preserving the grounds and history here. Plus the animals add to the peace. I was able to walk around after the tour just to enjoy the scenery. It was free admissions and you can always give donations.

Beautiful place right on the base, large museum that covers the history of Texas military. Inside the Quadrangle there are many peacocks, and deer, and koi fish in the pond. There are some picnic tables under the big oak tree. The pace is free to visit.

Definetly recommend visiting if you are military affiliated or even just a tourist, as it is open to the public. Both the quadrangle grounds and the museum is free.

This is a truely underated gem of San Antonio. Besides being an important landmark with a rich and storied history, Historic Fort Sam Houston is a breathtakingly beautiful sanctuary where gentle deer and peacocks roam free as people go about their business. You can take a walk through the museum to learn the history of the fort and see everything from authentic uniforms to antique firearms and even a short film, should you choose to watch it. From the museum, bags of feed are available to feed the deer and peacocks as you walk the grounds. You can snap a picture in front of the clock tower where, as legend has it, Geronimo was once held prisoner. This is also a great location for a small picnic. Historic Fort Sam Houston is operated and maintained jointly by the US Army and US Air Force however, it is still open to the public, and entrance to both the fort and the museum is 100% FREE, the only thing that costs any money is the animal feed which is only a few dollars. Historic Fort Sam Houston is a great place to take the kids for an afternoon adventure or to take your SO for part of a low-cost date. I highly recommend it.

Great quiet and casual place to go and experience nature. They have many types of geese and a beautiful pond area. They also have several deer that roam the grounds and several peacocks. You can bring bird seed, or other healthy bird snacks, but don’t bring dangerous food like bread and crackers for the water fowl. I didn’t see anyone feeding the deer so I don’t know what is permitted there. Saw many families and a wide variety of ages. There was even a family sitting on the grass with a large blanket, it looked peaceful. I remember coming here as a child and loving it, it’s still a nice place to go, many years later.

Very enjoyable experience. Staff was super friendly and helpful. The museum was larger than I expected and has a lot of fascinating items and information. We didn't give ourselves enough time to finish, so that's a good reason to return. In addition to the history of Fort Sam Houston, it's good for those interested in other early Texas forts, and the development of Texas and San Antonio. I learned, for example, about Camp John Wise, a US Army Balloon Corps base in WWI, that was right down the street from where I live in SA. The Quadrangle itself is also nice, with peacocks roaming around, a beautiful historic oak, the tower, etc. Entrance is free but non-military need to get a pass at the main Visitors Center near I-35 and Walters St., so allow time for that.

Unique place, unique history, Geronimo was imprisoned there in 1886 before being sent to OK, nowadays one can see peacocks and deer inside the quadrangle while Fort Sam Houston crumbles into oblivion....

This is such an awesome place. It was quite the surprise to see all of the animals there. Such beautiful birds just walking around. The museum was very interesting and had an fun "Easter egg" hint for kids to look for. It made it more fun for my 5 y.o. This is definitely a must visit if you're in Ft Sam Houston

Quite a surprise to see live animals in the quad peacocks, ducks, geese and deer. Even 3 albino peacocks! There is a cute museum there too. It's all free.

I took my brother to our surprise when we entered the Quadangle , there was a koi pond. And free roaming peacock and geese. We are both veterans so we went inside the museum To see the old equipment we use to repair and drive, on the way out we ran into roaming deer. A very nice place to visit.and it’s free for now

Very Informative. Enjoyed the History. It’s on a Military Base so if you have a Military ID, it’s easier to get into.
