Superb collection of local cultural heritage. Beware that rooms 1 to 8 of 12 could not be visited, but you're not informed of this when buying a ticket. Regardless, a must-see. There is so much to learn and do much scope for the imagination!

This is THE coolest museum I've ever been to. I had only ever seen this stuff in archaeology text books at university, but now I've seen them up close and personal. There were great artifacts ranging from textiles to pottery and statues. Such beautiful art and an impressive facility with helpful staff.

A must see stop in Santiago if you are at all interested in Latin American history. This museum tells the story of the time before the Spanish conquered South America. It tells the story of the people who lived here, their lives, and their culture. Absolutely amazing museum.

The museum showcases an impressive collection of pre-Columbian objects, including pottery, textiles, mummies, lithic pieces, metalwork, and more. To fully appreciate the details of the collection, plan to dedicate at least 2-3 hours to your visit.

Great small museum with a collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts worth seeing. A nice collection of Mayan ceramics, always a highlight for us. Beautiful weavings and textiles magnificently preserved and displayed. Beautiful Mapuche jewelry.

A great muse6of pre-Colombian artifacts. One floor is for central and south American cultures and civilizations, Mayan, Inca, Moche, etc. The bottom floor is for artifact from Chile and called Chile before Chile. Amazing stuff, from tiny objects to giant figures sculpted out of wood. If you are in Santiago, do not miss this place.

I'm giving the museum 5 stars cause I think it will be amazing once its finished. When I visited there was only really the basement exhibits open. That being said the quality of the exhibit was amazing. There was great info on the artifacts and about different cultures that lived throughout the country. Also written in English which was great for me!

Good museum with a great selection of pre-Columbian items, lots of quirky pots with faces on which was particularly fun. Took about 90 minutes to look around.

Good place to see and learn about pre Colón cultures through mesoamericana and south America... They have a good collection of ancestral cultures before Europe colonization. Second floor Inka, Maya and so on... First floor, a temporary exhibition and underground floor Chile before Chile, a good selection of our natives.

This is a high class, high quality museum. The exhibits are well put together similar to what you'd see at any world class museum. The architecture of the building is tastefully done. There's English on the majority of the plaques. Unlike other museums there is a fee for this one of 10,000 CLP for foreigners. There's also artefacts you can see here which aren't available anywhere else. Like 7000 year old mummies..

Brilliant if small museum focussed on the pre-Colombian art of South America. Beautiful pottery and textiles from different indigenous groups. Lovely building. It’s a small museum so will only take around 1 hour- 1.5 hours to get around. Worth a trip if you have free time in Santiago however cost for tourists is 5 times the price for Chilean citizens (!!!) was around $10 which was expensive for how small the museum is so will depend on if you are price sensitive!

Possibly the best museum in the world, definitely the best in Chile. Disclaimer: I love Pre-Columbian art & history. The sheer number and variety of artifacts is astounding. You’ll see things here you won’t see anywhere else on Earth. This is a must-visit spot in Santiago.

This is one of the COOLEST museums I have ever been to anywhere in the world. The “Chile before Chile” exhibit downstairs was breathtaking to see the rich history of the land dating back over 13,000 years. Price is so reasonable at 10,000 pesos, it was not busy, and you can expect to spend ~1 hour here.

The museum is located directly in the center of Santiago within an area of a lot of old nice buildings. The most interesting part was in the basement where some parts of the precolombian art was shown also with description in relation of different location and time. In the upper part of the museum of lot of exhibits are shown but with missing additional information. Also no idea was given how to best go through the museum. Overall for a price of 10000 Pesos for a foreigner the visit was ok.

  • 5/5 Marc F. 1 year ago on Google
Absolutely phenomenal museum if you’re interested in the history of some fascinating peoples. The museum presented the pieces in a brilliant taxonomy that helped to appreciate the sophistication and advancement of the peoples. The second floor remains closed at May 12, 2022, which is one-third of the museum

  • 5/5 Maria R. 2 months ago on Google • 22 reviews New
While this is not a large museum, the preservation of the clothing and textiles from so long ago was truly spectacular. I had to ask a museum worker if they were replicas of what was created years ago because the condition was so perfect. Very informative

  • 4/5 Tom H. 4 years ago on Google
While most exhibits have more information in Spanish than English, there is still a decent level of information available in English next to the exhibits. The museum broadly covers Chile, and surrounding regions, before 1500. It is well curated, with different rooms representing different regions and periods of time. The ground floor has temporary exhibitions. As of December 2019 this was a display by Sheila Hicks, whose work with fibres was inspired by precolombian weaving techniques. The museum has clean bathrooms, lifts between floors, a cafe and gift shop. Entry is 7000 pesos (~£7/$10) for adults and half price for students.

  • 5/5 Caesar T. 2 years ago on Google
The Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino is a huge building that houses a relatively small collection of exquisite items. The collection consists of a diverse range going from tools, pottery and textiles to instruments and weapons to quipus and mummies. Everything is annotated in Spanish and English, everything's behind glass and, I suspect because of the fragile nature of the items, it's relatively dark inside. Heartily recommended.

  • 5/5 Victor W. 5 years ago on Google
Really awesome museum at an affordable price showing off some of the more intricate artifacts of Chile's vibrant history. Starting from the amazing basement which is 4 flights of stairs down from the main level, once you walk through the glass doors, you are greeted with an absolutely amazing exhibition space with vaulted ceilings as high as some churches but in the ground. Only a little bit of light comes through the specially designed ceiling skylight to help prevent the artifacts from degrading due to light exposure. Lots of very detailed descriptions for each artifact. The upper level also contains a massive amount of artifacts split across 2 sections of the museum. It was quite easy to navigate due to the square shape of the museum All descriptions were given in both English and Spanish which is highly appreciated. The price for admission is extremely reasonable and the quick Wi-Fi for the cafe is a nice perk.

Small museum as many galleries were closed due to Covid. Make an online reservation before showing up. Nice quick way to learn about the three different inhabited regions of Chile.

Of all of the museums I visited in Santiago, this was my favorite. The pieces I saw were unforgettable. I learned a lot about the first nation people of South America, Central America, and Mexico. The ceramics and textiles on view are fascinating. The texts are presented in English and Spanish. If you work for a museum and have your ID, you have free entry. The cafe is a great place to rest. The food is delicious and the staff is very friendly. Don't miss the experience!

  • 5/5 Guillermo L. 4 years ago on Google
I loved it. The bottom basement floor had Chilean precolumbian art. The top, second floor had art from almost all the Americas. The ground floor had an exhibit of Sheila Hicks art whose art is, in part, inspired by Incs art. Signs were in Spanish and English. They charge too much if you are not Chilean (7,000 pesos or 10 USD).

  • 4/5 lesley s. 1 year ago on Google
There’s plenty to see here, with some fascinating exhibits that are nicely arranged, Sadly the whole top floor is out of action due to a lack of funds. The displays are all in English as well as Spanish, but the size of some of the text is a little on the squinty side. Very nice place to spend a couple of hours.

We really enjoyed this museum. A great chance to see a range of art and learn more about pre-Colombian communities and the Indigenous peoples of different parts of the Americas. It was a really well-set up museum and we definitely ran out of time to truly enjoy everything. I'd recommend at least 2 hours if you want to really read and explore the whole place! (We also had a quick coffee and sandwich in the cafe downstairs which was expensive but good quality!)

Considering this is supposed to be the top cultural attraction in Chile, I am shocked how pathetic the restaurant is. Every other major museum I have been to in South America has a five star restaurant with an extensive menu. At this restaurant there is just a handful of junk food. If you are hungry rather eat at one of the many places outside before visiting the museum.

We went before the national holiday. They were closing in 30 mins but the kind person let us in for free to visit the first floor. Very enjoyable

Also a very nice museum to visit in Santiago which has pre-Columbian artworks and artifacts from Central and South America. When we visited the museum the 2nd floor was closed. The lady at the ticket office told us beforehand. Foreigners have to pay way too much comparing to Chileans.

  • 5/5 Lui C. 1 year ago on Google
It is absolutely amazing, a wonderful experience that everyone should have. Sadly only one floor of the museum is currently available, but it was totally worth the visit. The information is very clear and well displayed, and I wish to go back there one day when all floors are open.

  • 3/5 Bret B. 1 year ago on Google
The whole second floor is closed, and will be for a long time. They do tell you this up front, which is honest and transparent, but there's no reduction of price considering the fact that most of the exhibits are on the second floor. I decided not to pay full price to go through and only see one third of the available exhibits. The customer service is very friendly and explaining the situation. But someone in charge should definitely make a decision about price reduction while the largest part of the museum is under renovation. Pre-Colombian history is fascinating, including the relics, sculptures and artwork that remains as a testimony of these past civilizations. This would be a great museum, if it were opened up and it's entirety. CLP 8.000 is the highest daily admission fee for non Chilean residents to visit the museum. Locals and students get a discount. CLP 1.000 for locals admission. CLP 4.000 for foreign students.

  • 3/5 Olu Olu Coffee L. 1 year ago on Google
Some very good and informative artefacts in the basement. But the rest of the museum floors were closed. They have yet to re-open since covid. They still charged 5000 CLP though.

  • 2/5 glassed01 1 year ago on Google
I will respect the opinions of those who have given this place five stars, but I simply can't do it. Given that this place charges an inflated 8000 pesos for foreigners (eight times the local price) and half of it is shut off, I left feeling really ripped off. Now, in fairness, what is open is presented well, and beautifully displays the art of Chile's diverse indigenous tribes. Ultimately though, even though it's a good room, it's not $10 good, and a discount while half the museum is closed off would have made this visit better. Ultimately, as long as they keep charging the same for much less, I would hold off on going to this museum.

Very interesting museum on the cultures before the white men came to the South and Middle America's

  • 2/5 Colin M. 1 year ago on Google
The second floor was closed and the 1st floor had no English translation on any exhibit. The overall display across the two floors open is very little compared to other museums. Besides the above the museum has some great pieces and very interesting information on the countries past cultures.

  • 4/5 Simon B. 1 year ago on Google
Impressive (but not massive) collection spanning not just Chilean but other Latin American countries’ history. English translations made this more accessible than many other museums we have been to on the continent.
