This is a rather miniature museum. For a national level museum, it has only about a dozen small rooms. The museum is located next to Plaza de Armas, its brown-yellow construction doesn't resemble the local style but rather that of the distant Iberian Peninsula. Admission is free, much like many museums in Santiago, which reminded me of the UK. The tour guide at the entrance was very enthusiastic, but there were no English introductions within the entire venue, everything was in Spanish. Thankfully, I had Google's photo translation tool. The history of Chile is indeed not long. Compared to the European countries I've visited, as well as China, my homeland with an ancient civilization, most of the exhibits start from the 16th century. The most comprehensive exhibits probably pertain to the 19th and 20th centuries. The main focus of the 19th century was independence, influenced by many European ideologies, such as the French Revolution and the American Independence Movement. The history of this period was largely marked by the use of firearms. After the political situation stabilised somewhat in the 20th century, a significant amount of money was made from selling hydrochloric acid. The country thus stepped into the high-income bracket. The industrial port cities along the coast attracted many British businesspeople. Their homes were in Victorian style, while German immigrants headed south to farm and expand territories. Of course, the southward expansion of Chile inevitably led to many wars against local indigenous people. Modern Chile, as an outstanding performer in Latin American economies, still experiences significant wealth disparity. But this seems to be a problem of the entire century. China also faces the same issue. Although the economy has taken off and the purchasing power of the wealthy has astounded the developed world, almost 30% of the Chinese population still resides in rural areas. Close to half of Chinese people earn less than 1000 Yuan a month.

An admirable characteristic of Santiago is the free entrance museums. At this one, you can learn more about Chile's history evolving State, Church and People. Better than lectures at University.

Good Museum on the history of Chile covered some of the politics but not the most recent political upheavals. You need a 100 peso coin in order to lock up your backpacks backpacks are not allowed. You get the 100 piece of coin back at the end.

A nice free museum with many items of historical significance, as well as paintings. A little busy after 12 on a weekday, but still very manageable. If you have a backpack, you will be asked to put it in a storage locker.

Highly recommended to immerse yourself in the history. Excellently presented. Also the photo documentation is on the highest (European) level. It is a pity that there are no explanations in English in the rooms.

Super cool museum containing a lot of artifacts explaining the culture and history of Chile. Not a large museum but there are quite a lot of large artifacts which I did enjoy such as the historical artillery used and even a full size carriage. There's also a cool VR spot to travel through time but I didn't get a chance to use it as the hours are slightly limited compared to the general museum. This museum does have FREE admission which is fantastic but I really wished they would have added even machine generated english translations to better serve international visitors.

A fascinating museum in Santiago to learn more about the Spaniards in Chile. A great amount of history here and lovely things to see. A must when you're in Santiago.

Telling a story that is not likely to satisfy everyone but informative someone who knows little about the country (like me). Well organized and with some well designed scale models.

They didnt even let me enter. My bag was a bit bigger than the tiny lockers they have and the security guy didnt make any effort to find a solution. Even though there were obviously a few much bigger boxes behind the lockers that would be fine, but he just refused to help.

This would have been 4 or 5 stars if the explanations had been in English too. Our fault for not speaking Spanish, but if you're English I only recommend if you have nothing else to do and/or are willing to use your phone to translate lots of signs. Good thing is it's free.

Closed (week of Nov 6 2023) due to a strike, just like all national museums in Santiago. The only museum open is the pre-columbian museum.

Some collections were interesting. However, not as complete or well-curated as one would expect of a national museum. The building is in need of upgrades. However, the staff was very friendly and helpful.

This free of charge museum is composed of two separated areas, one is a revolution remembrance museum, and the other is located upstairs and it's the historical museum per se. In the later one, half of the exposed objects are notorious figures portraits, the other half it's a diverse range of items. Of those, I would highlight, the soldiers on the right side of the battle painting, and the flag of Rapa Nui. Video recording isn't permitted and some staff can overzealous.

It's great but are you going to read a review of the place to decide on visiting? Only thing is, nothing is in English and there are no English language options.

Well worth a visit. 2 levels. Tickets are free. No English though on descriptive signs. You can get an English brochure that summarises things at the ticket office on entry.

Moderate sized free museum about Chile's history. I can't say too much about the contents, since I don't speak much Spanish. Anyway, it featured interesting exhibitions about communism in Chile. Anyway I think it's very unfortunate they don't have any English explanations available. As a European tourist I'm still interested in the country's history without having to run around with my phone for translations all the time. Also make sure to bring a 100 Pesos coin for the lockers if you have a bag with you.

No english text, and even if you use your phone to translate the text does not go into much detail into the historical contexts. Museum is free but is high effort for any non-Spanish speakers for very little reward

If you want to know more about the history of this country, you must come here to have a look. Originally the seat of the royal court and the Treasury, it was built in 1804-1807. The architect of the building, Juan goycolea, is a student of the cathedral architect, toescu. Free access.

  • 4/5 Emily A. 4 months ago on Google
All text is Spanish only. Upper floor is chronological and it's possible to follow the basic outline with rudimentary Spanish. Lower floor contains more recent history and fairly incomprehensible to someone without good Spanish who doesn't already know the subject.

Couldn't even get in. As my wife had a handbag they told us we had to pay to use a locker, but only a 100 peso coin is accepted to use the lockers. We had 100 pesos but not in 1 coin so they wouldn't let us in. What a joke.

The staff at this museum were so kind and helpful. Backpacks are not allowed in but there are free lockers outside for storage. The security guards were so nice to me and made sure I saw all the floors of the exhibit. They really serve as both guides and guards in a way. I was impressed! And it’s free.

Free entrance like most museums in Chile. All exhibits are written in Spanish but you can get an audio guide at the entrance. The space is beautiful and well maintained. School groups make trips here so if you happen to be visiting while one is in attendance it can be a bit cramped. However, if you have the time you can also return when it is less crowded.

Interesting museum that covers the history of Chile from precolumbian times through the beginning of the dictatorship. Some of the rooms were a little light on content and there were no English translations, which made it hard to get more than just the gist of what was happening in my poor Spanish. I went here with my dad while he was visiting us while Mom, my sister and my wife all went souvenir shopping!
