10/2023 update: Changing this star rating from my original rating to five stars. I’m so glad I went back here because it must have been an off day the first time I had visited. I haven’t tried the Vietnamese Iced Coffee again but their signature drink, The Kingslayer, is A-MAY-ZING. I get it iced and it’s super refreshing and tasty. Also, since I’ve returned I’ve found that the service level here is much better and there are typically two employees which helps matters immensely. One of my favorite coffee shops now. First time trying Hob Coffee East Village which is a super cute coffee shop on the corner of K and 11th near Petco Park. They only had one employee working which made wait times a bit long since she had to take orders and then make drinks but she was doing her best. Thankfully it wasn’t super busy or I don’t think we would have waited. Inside they have plenty of seating and sell various items related to Hob Coffee with City Connect Padres colors. We ordered the Vietnamese Iced Coffees today which, according to their menu, is four espresso shots poured over ice and condensed milk in a 16oz cup. Unfortunately the sweetness of the condensed milk couldn’t overcome the burnt taste of the espresso in these drinks. I really wanted to like them. I don’t know if the fact that there was only one person working contributed to poor espresso making because she felt rushed or if the beans were just not of good quality but we couldn’t even drink all of it. I’m giving three stars based on the cute location and vibe as well as the kindness of the barista but I don’t think that I would order an espresso here again. If we hadn’t take the drinks to go we might have asked them to make us something else.

Very personal experience the barista treated me like we were bestfriends. The coffee is to die for and the pastries and oatmeal were amazing. Vegan options are actually pretty great. Indoor and Outdoor dining. Non Gendered restroom is for customers only.

5 stars for the coffee, 1 star for the breakfast. Well balanced and nice cappuccino and latte, unfortunately the 2 oatmeals were nothing like on the Google map picture or on the menu. Instead of steel-cut oatmeal with granola, chocolate chips, coconut flakes, walnuts and honey in a bowl we got regular oatmeal with a couple pecans thrown in served in a paper cup. Disappointing, maybe because it’s Monday?

Small cool little coffee shop nestled under all the tall buildings nearby. Friendly staff and delicious cold brew.

perfect spot for a caffeine hit & small bite to eat. the avo toast ain’t like your usual avo toast so definitely give it a try. I got the Greyhound bus from LA early morning & spent some time in the cafe until the City woke (10 min walk from the station) :-) fab first impression of SD

Guy behind the counter was a bit snobbish and the latte I had was overpriced. Figured I'd give a local business a shot, but I have no problem giving my money to Starbucks instead.

Bean bar is a place that you must stop if you are in San Diego it's a fabulous Cafe and we've been going here for years. Quality is one of the things that comes to mind. The staff is super friendly and helpful and there are many options to choose from here.

Experience 4, offerings 4, value 4 - decent cold brew will run you $5. The inside smelled strongly of cleaning chemicals which was odd

Small coffee shop that has interesting flavored coffee. Being a nerd I just got a standard dark roast with 2 shots and it was STRONG. The PB Banana Honey toast was good and definitely recommend it if you like a sweet breakfast that isn’t chocolate-related. Right up the road from the San Diego Convention Center and next to the Padres’ stadium so easy walking distance from those spots.

Excellent espresso! I had the oats too and they were delicious —— I have now gone back three days in a row and got the avocado toast with poached egg...delicious!

The employees here are literal angels on earth. They’re so sweet every day, remember my order, and always make sure to give my pups a pupcup. They make a phenomenal iced dirty chai!! I love this coffee spot so much!!!

Terrific neighborhood coffee shop. The Vietnamese iced coffee was fantastic! I also ordered the avocado toast which was fantastic. The avocado was fresh and ripe. The goat cheese and pickled onion are a perfect compliment and pairing. The staff was very helpful. Nice space to do some work on my laptop. I wish I could give more stars!

Everything was amazing 👏🏻👏🏻 I got a vanilla latte with an extra shot and my husband got a quad shot with milk and vanilla, both drinks were super smooth and delicious. We especially loved the avocado toast with pickled onions and goat cheese, I order scrambled eggs to pair with mine and they were fresh and flavorful. This is now one of our favorite breakfast places!

7-5-21: Read about the coffee and was excited to try a pour over! I tried the Guatemala coffee and the house oatmeal. Both were great. The oatmeal had steel cut oats which tasted like the kind you get at Starbucks or Peets Coffee. Except Hobs comes with chocolate chips 😀. The sweet oats paired well with coffee ☕! Great service all around. The woman recommended the coffee based on what I like and was working very hard and efficient by herself while a line was forming. Very admirable!

I adore the unions as well. They're friendly, and I don't see them often, but they remember my husband and me. It's a fantastic neighborhood coffee shop.

  • 2/5 James H. 5 years ago on Google
Good coffee, but felt ripped off when I was told they couldn't put less ice in my cup for some made up reason. I want less ice because I want more coffee and not two sips worth. They clearly don't want you to get your money's worth. Had that not occurred I would have happily gave them 5 stars.

We were exploring the gaslamp area and were looking for a place to have coffee. This was recommended to us by a local and I must agree that it had some of the best coffee I have had. I pass this recommendation on to those looking for coffee.

Really like the coffee here. Tasty drinks and strong and good quality coffee. It’s convenient for me too so always a plus to have a good local coffee shop. They usually are not too crowded so I can always find a spot to sit, do a bit of work, and enjoy my drink.

There's an older white lady with short brown hair who doesn't treat delivery drivers very nicely. It took me 30 minutes to get to the store because of a padres game. Once I arrived she said she cancelled the order because she is busy and said "I hope you get a better Job than delivery driving" she was very rude and fickle. I still can't believe she said that I think it's per that needs to get a better.

Cute coffee shop, located right on the corner in the east village. Great ambience. The sweetest, friendly staff. This young lady was extremely outgoing and patience. It was our 1st time there. We ordered the hot cookie latte topped with a wafer and an iced vanilla latte both with extra shots of espresso. Drinks were good. Great quality coffee beans… a nice toast. Only con- all sizes come with 2 shots, so the only difference is paying for extra milk. Otherwise, positive experience. Average pricing. Next time, I’m trying to Vietnamese.

Nice little cafe in East Village. Located in a not crowded area. Was easily able to get a table for myself lunch time on a weekday. Wide open feel with a ton of natural light. Their cold brew was smooth and the avocado toast hit the spot. Typical pricing for a modern coffee shop ($3 for a shot). Definitely a nice place to relax and post up to do some work.

My number one favorite cafe in San Diego for 3 reasons: 1. The crossaint here is the best one I've ever had in San Diego, pretty close to European quality. And believe me when I say I have tried all the crossaints in the city:) 2. Staffs here are always super nice and friendly. They always bring coffee and food to your table no matter how busy they are, unlike lots of other cafes where they just call your name for you to pick up your own coffee even for dining in. 3. My favorite coffee here is Mocha and vanilla Latte. The baristas here always made gorgeous latte art which made my day delightful

Hob Coffee East Village is exactly the type of place I love to frequent and this picture is exactly the reason. This is Jim one of the owners and he hand delivered our order which just so happened to be in the middle of Griffith Park haha. Food is always wonderful and would definitely recommend.

Went this morning to try out the newest coffee shop and it was awful!!! Please save yourself an hour of aggravation and go anywhere but here. They dont roast their own beans, so they are just a coffee shop which would be fine, but when my husband and I ordered 2 lattes it took 30+ minutes!!! And they were wrong- they were: small instead of medium and made with almond milk instead of soy. Also, we ordered their toast with ricotta which would have been good, but the bread was soggy :( total disappointment!!

I've had good experiences with the staff. But beware that they have changed their matcha to a bad tasting, pre-sweetened powder mix. I ordered an unsweetened matcha latte. When I got my matcha, it was undrinkable. I politely asked for an unsweetened matcha and was told that's was the only powder they had. I don't understand why that wasn't stated before I paid. But i needed caffeine, so I walked about with an iced coffee I didn't want. Disappointing
