Haven’t been to the place in a long time and decided to go today but that was a bad idea. The food looked good but tasted bland. Had to add salt and pepper to my plate for favor. The waitress was rude and made us feel like she didn’t want us there. 100 dollars was our bill for 3 people. 2 adults and 1 child. It will be another long time before I go back.

This is a nice, spacious restaurant. It has free chips and salsa, large fountain drinks, generous portions, and pretty reasonable prices. The actual food taste okay, nothing incredibly impressive but good enough. The service was really good and the food came out really fast.

for starters, i came here with my lady as soon as she drove in from out of town. the portions are bigger than most mexican restaurants. the food was tasteful and seems like they put real thought into each dish and drink. very well! very very well. 🥂they even make fresh tortillas from scratch. i appreciate the authentic style and taste. the red salsa that came with the chips is very well on my rolled tacos. the margarita i got gave a good buzz🙌🏽 thank you and we will be back.

This was a really fun experience! The family enjoyed the food and ambiance. Really fun aspects to each part of the restaurant. I recommend sitting next to the street if the weather is nice. The California surf and turf burrito was incredible! I'd come back just to have that again. Everyone enjoyed their meals and our server was excellent!

Probably hands down my favorite place I went to while visiting San Diego! It’s located in old town which is a great place to visit as well. The burrito was GREAT and the atmosphere was great. The restaurant itself is huge and very aesthetically pleasing. The service wasn’t the best because they were so busy. But overall still a great experience

Beautiful restaurant with amazing views, staff and the food is incredible. Difficult with some of the aggressiveness of the tourist sells though with some staff coming up to try and sell pictures and play music for fees when not really wanted. If we were able to just enjoy the food and if wanted to request music or photos instead of having it pushed on customers would be much more enjoyable overall. Otherwise the restaurant staff and Mexican food is top notch and has a beautiful outdoor scenery environment!

I really enjoyed the vibes there. Right in the center of Old Town, I would recommend anyone to try. I like Marguerite, although the Tacos was just fine. The service, however, was top notch. I really like the staff that provided service to us. The menu is also interesting and you have Taco Tuesday where the discounts are very nice.

It’s a tourist trap, but it’s not too bad. Not the best, but service is pretty quick. Thickest tacos I’ve ever seen in my life. They never brought out the tortillas that came with a dish. It’s fairly inexpensive. The salsa that came with the chips was deliciously spicy.

We went for restaurant week and had the best lunch during pandemic. We were seated outdoors (our request) and service was amazing. Our waitress was kind and made our lunch a special time for us. Hands down the best carnitas in Old Town! Highly recommend the fresh hand made tortillas.

This is a family favorite it never disappoints. I love sitting right in front of the Nana's making homemade potatoes. This visit didn't disappoint. Food was cooked perfection and tortillas were outstanding. Love homemade flour tortillas. Excellent Service as always

Delicious Authentic Mexican food They can accommodate tons of people, I was told they have 3 kitchens, with 15-20 servers. Fast service, fast food, reasonable prices. They have two women hand rolling tortillas out front.

Great ambiance but food really lacked flavor. Given the amount of reviews, our expectations were really up there but it just wasn’t the place for us. It’s huge so we got seated immediately even though from the outside it looked like there would be a long wait Margarita for two was also okay. I think all the sour mix was sitting at the bottom of the pitcher? Idk, it was odd!

Great spot in Old Town, with lots of seating. They are doing a great job with following safety procedures for covid. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Food was really tasty and the chips and salsa were a delight. I enjoyed the flight of margaritas too although I felt some didn't taste that different. They have a photographer that walks around and takes your pictures as well as a guitarist that will play music for your table for tips. Love the decor too. I would definitely recommend checking it out for yourself.

I love old town and I love Cafe Coyote! There is a parking lot about three to four blocks away, not too bad. You get to see all the shops and other restaurants as you walk. The hosts and the servers are always nice. My husband and I look pretty young and sometimes we are not treated right at other places. I never have any problems here. Never. Everyone is always super nice. On weekends it can get crowded so I recommend making a reservation or be patient. The food is yummy, I would say it is a little on the pricier side considering it's food you can get at a taco shop. However, the food here tastes "home made" so there's that. You get what you pay for. My favorite is their Chicken a La Crema. I 100% recommend it. Their posoles are worth it if you get a bowl. I think the cup is too small but that's personal preference. Their flour tortillas are made there so you will get quality tortillas.

This was one of the highlights of our latest trip to San Diego for Comic Con 2024. We Googled best Mexican restaurants and this one was recommended and we were able to get a reservation. We arrived via Uber to see a huge place that looked like a big block party. Two ladies were making flour tortillas on a griddle the whole time we were there. We were seated and served amazing margaritas. We had a flight of different flavors and then a regular one with dinner. They were excellent. Lots of flavor lots of tequila! The food was pretty standard. Great rice and beans decent chimichangas, great guacamole 🥑 and a burrito that had French fries in it, but it was good and you should try it. Had a blast! Best time out in the evening we had during the trip!

This place was great! It was super busy and they were able to sit our party of eight immediately. The chips and salsa were amazing. Very fresh and just the right spicy level. Service was good. He took very good care of us. We tried a variety of things and loved them all. I highly recommend this place. Can’t wait to return.

Yeah sure it’s a tourist trap. But who cares? Food is great. Service is good. Atmosphere is awesome. Caesar salad with chicken was tasty and they have a terrific selection of traditional Mexican dishes. With tortillas made on premises. Sit outside and watch the scene the sidewalk. Good times.

Cafe Coyote is a delightful dining destination that truly captures the essence of Mexican cuisine. The menu boasts a wide variety of dishes, each bursting with flavor and made from fresh ingredients. Whether you opt for traditional favorites like enchiladas or more adventurous offerings, every bite is sure to impress. The vibrant atmosphere enhances the dining experience, making it a perfect spot for both casual meals and special celebrations. The drink selection at Cafe Coyote is equally impressive, featuring a range of tasty beverages that complement the flavorful food. From classic margaritas to unique specialty cocktails, there’s something to please every palate. The bartenders are skilled and attentive, ensuring your drink is perfectly crafted. Pairing your meal with one of these refreshing drinks adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your visit. Overall, Cafe Coyote stands out not just for its wonderful food and tasty drinks but also for its welcoming ambiance and friendly service. The staff goes above and beyond to make guests feel at home, creating a warm and inviting environment. Whether you're a local or just visiting, Cafe Coyote is a must-try for anyone looking to indulge in authentic Mexican flavors in a lively setting.

If you ever want to try what authentic Mexican food tastes like, this place is the answer to it. Most of the Mexican restaurants are inclined commercially making them less authentic, but cafe coyote serves you exactly what you get in Mexico. They start the service with the complimentary chips and salsa. The appetiser platter was awesome. Worth mentioning were the taquitos and nachos. Their salsa sauce was one of the best I ever had. Next we tried the potato and chicken tacos. They were decent. Keep in mind that portion sizes here are huge and you might want to order less to start with. The service here is as good as it gets. The server was kind and attentive and took care of us very well. Quick service as well. Worth mentioning is the atmosphere here, with the live Mexican two-player band. It’s a little pricey but is justified by the huge portion sizes All in all a culinary as well as a culturally enriching experience.

Good at atmosphere, service was ok, food sucked. Worst carne asada I've ever had, too thick and not charred and bland, worst birria meat we've ever had and we got lobster with our carne asada, extremely over done with fake butter on the side. Hate these tourist trap restaurants, just bad food.

The place was clean! They have outdoor seating and indoor seating. The food was great and was hot when it came out! They have Mexican food but also have like burgers in stuff if you don’t like Mexican food. The inside was well decorated and looked good! The food was a little bland but was mostly good. One down side the bathrooms are on the second floor.

Great mexican food in this Cafe at Old Town. Lovely vibe, lovely food. Just one main course and one appetiser is sufficient for two people- it’s so loaded. Don’t forget to order Margaritas. They have diff flavours of margaritas and we loved them all. The ambience is great, the waiter was extremely warm and friendly. They clicked us a group picture too and gave a cute picture postcard. Just some veg options had a lot of beans and rice and we got tired of it after a while :D

Yes, finding parking on the street is a pain. Wait in the line on the right for dining in (hand rolls) or go straight to the cash register to order the take-out boxes (cut rolls). I wish they offered hand rolls to go! The food here is delicious and the line moves quickly, so don't be deterred when you see the line go out of the door. The menu is simple and all the rolls are freshly made before your hungry eyes!

Amazing atmosphere and good service- food was a bit disappointing. This was the first meal we had when we touched down in San Diego and we were hoping for better tasting Mexican food. It was just average. But a fun place to visit! Old Towne is such a fun area.

Cafe Coyote is a busy restaurant nestled into the hustle and bustle of old town. The food was good and we enjoyed our lunch. The salsa was very good. I would’ve liked my dish to be spicier but it was okay that it wasn’t. The rice had a good flavor and wasn’t too dry like some places. We would definitely recommend if your exploring that area.

This was an experience. My friends had the lobster while I opted for terra y mar. Omg great choice. Although I adore lobster I'm overjoyed at my choice carne asada and tequila lime grilled shrimp. Side of rice beans & guacamole. 💋excellent. Also enjoyed a modela especial. Everything was on point. Waitstaff was fun and engaging. Polite but not over zealous. Even got a little dance out of it. Skakira style. Thanks Cesar you the best 😉 Recommend this location highly.

Cafe Coyote provided a fantastic Mexican dining experience that left me thoroughly impressed on multiple fronts. To begin, the Mexican cuisine served here is undeniably good. The flavors were authentic and satisfying, showcasing the essence of Mexican cooking. During my visit, I indulged in the El Ray combo, and it was an absolute delight. The combination of flavors and textures made it a memorable dish that I would eagerly order again. The highlight of my evening was the margarita flight, featuring five different kinds of margaritas. Each one was a flavorful journey, but my personal favorite was the Chamango Margarita. Its unique blend of ingredients created a refreshingly tangy and sweet concoction that I won't soon forget. Service at Cafe Coyote was excellent, with attentive staff ensuring that every need was met. The portions were generous, leaving me feeling satisfied and content. The restaurant itself is quite spacious, making it an ideal choice for large groups or gatherings. The accommodating atmosphere and delicious food make Cafe Coyote a top-notch Mexican dining destination that I wholeheartedly recommend.

This is an Old Town staple. It is a very beautiful restaurant with beautiful views all around. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. It food was good. It resembled food from other Mexican food places I have been to. I had the fish tacos and to be honest I wasn't impressed. The fish was bland. The rice and beans were fresh and delicious. My wife had the nachos and again It was good. My only complaint is that it was warm out when we went(July) and where we were sitting there was no air movement and no fans. Someone from our party went down and bought hand fans just so we could be a little more comfortable.

Food was good. We were here 6 years ago. Good margaritas and upon staying were got tortillas and salsa while we read the menu. The Fiesta Sampler was good but a bit dried out. Our server was excellent. Service was reasonable.

This place is amazing! Beautifully decorated, I can feel the authentic Mexican vibe, even though I've never been to Mexico. We went on the weekend and it was crowded, but the staff worked so fast - or maybe it was because we made reservations - all I could see was a long line waiting for seats! The food was great, even though I don't know much about Mexican food, but it's my husband's favorite, and the staff are friendly!

Awesome venue and vibe from the place. Exceptional service and wait staff. Beautiful area and just overall a great place to be. However I was not impressed by the actually food. But this won't stop me from going again just to experience the vibes.

Fun place. It was really busy when we went, so we had a long wait for every visit. That might not be the typical experience though. The food was pretty tasty for the volume that they must be cranking out.

I get better mexican food from a random taco shop. They don't even use the home madr tortillas they make. The meat is bland and has no authentic spice or seasoning. Even the salsa tast like a can w added jalapeño. I could n't even get fresh cilantro on my tacos. It's cute and in the middle of old town and looks all authentic, but it's just the location. Save the disapoimtment, don't be fooled, try some place else.

Magnificent. This is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to. Food is very delicious. We’ve been here twice and both times it was amazing. The atmosphere is great, feels like you’re at a Mexican wedding or something and service is top notch. I highly recommend this place

Excellent Mexican food in an upbeat yet homely ambiance. The Tequila list is impressive as are the Margheritas. Freshly made tortillas round off the top notch experience. Prices are reasonable for being in Old Town San Diego and portions huge. In the days before the Covid19 pandemic, there used to be a Mariachi band; didn't see/hear one this time around.

Wonderful food and a great all around experience great service. They have an extra crazy amount of tequila they serve and the tortillas are made fresh pretty much in your face and they have roaming mariachis! 100% recommend!

After my favorite Mexican restaurant closed down due to the pandemic, I was left with a huge void of finding another restaurant that was on the same level. Cafe Coyote is on that level. It is so good. The food is very flavorful, the carne asada i had was incredibly tender and their beans are out of this world. Not to mention the great atmosphere and home made tortillas. I have found my new Mexican Restaurant.

  • 4/5 Dee Y. 1 year ago on Google
Conveniently located at the center of old town San Diego with its own parking. The restaurant made us feel like we are in Mexico. Food was not great but definitely beyond okay. I really enjoyed some of the drinks from the margarita flight, except for the chamango.

A fantastic Mexican dining experience that left me thoroughly impressed! One of the authentic Mexican restaurants I have been to. As said, the flavors were too good and authentic. During my visit, I tried the Chamango margarita - one of the house favorites(my personal favorite too) and must try! I loved the ingredients that added blend of tangy and sweet flavor to it! For entree, I tried veggie fajitas which was too good! Service was excellent, with attentive staff ensuring that every need was met. The portions were generous and satisfied my appetite! The old town has multiple Mexican restaurants and Cafe Cayote is definitely worth the try! The place is quite spacious, making it an ideal choice for large groups or gatherings with nice ambience. Highly recommended!

During peak hours, securing a seat can be quite challenging and may require a short wait, which can be slightly irksome. However, the place's inherent charm lies in its historic aesthetics. I had the opportunity to savor a burrito, and the food was indeed delectable. Despite the service being somewhat delayed during busy hours, overall, it is commendably good.

  • 4/5 Varun 1 year ago on Google
Great atmosphere and the food is pretty good as well! I had the Shrimp and Rice and Beans. Loved the dish. Also, had the Margarita but felt it was a little too salty. Apart for that, do visit this place if you are in Old Town, San Diego.

  • 3/5 Paul L. 1 year ago on Google
We've walked past this place many times and finally decided to try it. Service was great. Food was so so. Drinks we're okay. Margarita was not as strong as if like. However, you have to buy the handmade tortillas before you leave. Those are 5⭐'s.

  • 5/5 Allie K. 2 years ago on Google

My fiancee and I went to cafe coyote for dinner, our first time there. After we placed out order, her order was not what she had ordered, enchilada plate chicken and cheese, she got guacamole inside both of them. My dish was supposed to be flautas x 6 as the waiter told me, I got 2 flautas that were cut in half to make 4 small pieces the size of a spring roll you get at a chinese restaurant. After bitting into a small flauta, I bit into a tooth pick that was not taken out after it was fried, almost stabbed my upper jaw. Ordered a chelada with dos x and specifically told the waiter to put red chili powder stuff on the rim, he brought it full of salt and filled with ice cubes, 2 sips gone. Terrible expirence. Will not be going there again.

Well seasoned, reasonable portioned food, but the best part is that despite being super busy they still seated us super fast! They handle large groups really well.
