Prepare to spend all day here, it is a huge establishment that has so many artifacts, sculptures and monuments. I love that it has indoor and outdoor parts that allow you to see lots of different things. I spent 2 hours here and i barely got through 1/3 of the exhibits! I think this is a must-see, one of the best museums I’ve ever been to. Also, most of the exhibits have English translations as well!

A great museum, large site and much to see. Clearly had some real thought put into the design and layout, including some outside spaces you can walk through which was lovely and shielded the view of the road which was nice. The price is very reasonable at 85 pesos per person and they take card which is useful (national museum of art only took cash and charges c20% more if using US dollars) Bag storage area if you’re carrying a rucksack which is well organised, and mandatory - you can keep small bags but not rucksacks around nor water bottles. Really enjoyed this and spent a couple of hours there, didn’t use the restaurant but is one for a break. Would recommend getting here early, we were there for 10am opening as by the time we came out around noon there were queues to get in and a wait. We also went in a week day as we could. There were translations into English on not all, but many sections so we were able to read quite a bit to understand the context of the pieces

What can I add? The place is a must if you're interested in Mexican history. The exhibits are designed well, which makes you feel welcome. The description of the items is mostly in Spanish so get ready to use a translator app. Spent about four hours here but could have easily stay longer.

(Translated by Google) It offers a broad overview of the many cultures found in today's Mexico before the arrival of the Europeans, filled with artifacts from numerous central Mexican civilizations from 2 millennia. Photos full of traditional clothes, photos, building old houses, etc. a world-class museum, descriptions in English, wonderful history, full of architecture. The museum is huge, I spent about 4 hours in the museum and it was not possible for me to see everything, it is a large collection. Take a lot of time. If you have time, you need a day or at least half a day to properly visit the facilities. If you are short of time, I recommend you first visit the Maya and Aztec Collection. Don't forget to visit Chapultepec Park. You can also dine. A must-see place. I had a great time. Other-worldly trip inside a world-class museum. Stunning collection of artifacts and history. Beautiful space with prudent Covid restrictions (at the moment). Fun to walk around on a nice day. Like most amazing museums, it would take days or more to properly appreciate it all. Fans of the Mayans and Aztecs won’t be disappointed. Bucket list stuff.

Absolutely staggering amount to take in … On par with the Caro Egyptian museum when it comes to large items. The outdoor displays were very impressive too. There is a great restaurant in the museum too. The gift store had some items priced cheaper than some sellers in the street. The only reason I can’t give it five stars is because for one of the top ten visited museums in the world I thought more of the exhibits would have English alongside Spanish in their explanations… unfortunately my Spanish is a work in progress.

This is the most enjoyable museum I have visited since I visited the British Museum as a kid! Very informative, key descriptions were in both a English and Spanish. Strongly suggest you see the 30 minutes introductory video before you navigate through the museum to give yourself a foundation of the rich history of Mexico. You won’t be disappointed. Ticket is 85 peso at the door. There is also a huge open space where you can sit in the garden to enjoy some local music and ad hoc performances.

The National Museum of Anthropology (Spanish: Museo Nacional de Antropología, MNA) is a national museum of Mexico. It is the largest and most visited museum in Mexico. Located in the area between Paseo de la Reforma and Mahatma Gandhi Street within Chapultepec Park in Mexico City, the museum contains significant archaeological and anthropological artifacts from Mexico's pre-Columbian heritage, such as the Stone of the Sun (or the Aztec calendar stone) and the Aztec Xochipilli statue. The museum (along with many other Mexican national and regional museums) is managed by the Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (National Institute of Anthropology and History), or INAH. It was one of several museums opened by Mexican President Adolfo López Mateos in 1964. Assessments of the museum vary, with one considering it "a national treasure and a symbol of identity. The museum is the synthesis of an ideological, scientific, and political feat." Octavio Paz criticized the museum's making the Mexica (Aztec) hall central, saying the "exaltation and glorification of Mexico-Tenochtitlan transforms the Museum of Anthropology into a temple." Designed in 1964 by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, Jorge Campuzano, and Rafael Mijares Alcérreca, the monumental building contains exhibition halls surrounding a courtyard with a huge pond and a vast square concrete umbrella supported by a single slender pillar (known as "el paraguas", Spanish for "the umbrella"). The halls are ringed by gardens, many of which contain outdoor exhibits. The museum has 23 rooms for exhibits and covers an area of 79,700 square meters (almost 8 hectares) or 857,890 square feet (almost 20 acres).

Jan 2022. Disappointed. Visited 27 Jan 22. Mostly closed for COVID. Their website nor Facebook declare this very obvious issue,,. Which is a very unhelpful way of addressing the problem . Hotel concierge knew when asked, so suggest you check with them if you can. Sure, . There is a small series of rooms open with a token selection of some items, paintings, etc available but can be navigated in 20 minutes and be main part shown in the photograph areas completely closed and staff said would not be open for at least a month as in March 2022. More likely to get Covid in the crowded small rooms than in thee huge expanse that is closed so it's counter productive from a Covid POV. Hence 2 stars Also a more permanent issue, No English signage to interpret, and no English guide printed or electronic or other available from the Museum so it's completely impossible if you don't speak Spanish to get anything deep out of the visit, There is no free Wi-Fi. And no or very poor network connection and so Google translate won't work inside the room

Certainly one of the greatest museums in the world. An amazing way to get an introduction to the history and artifacts of mesoamerica. Plan to spend the full day if you are interested in the topic. There's a nice restaurant for lunch but you should reserve a table early on. I really appreciate the English translations of many of the descriptions of the items, but I do wish they had used a native English speaker to complete the final edit of them; it is not always clear what is trying to be said. I did not find the free app very helpful for navigating through the exhibits.

Just a beautiful, beautiful museum. The architecture was gorgeous and the flow of the rooms were wonderful. It was definitely not geared to foreigners so if you are interested in the history you should get a tour guide because almost everything is in Spanish. We mostly walked the first floor as the second floor was more modernistic and not what we were interested in. Furthermore after the halfway through the first floor it got har for us to keep interest as we didn't understand much of the museum. But what we did understand and see was gorgeous. Worth the 80 peso entrance fee.

Cannot emphasize how great this place is. Lots to see so come with time. The best plan would be to checkout the lower level exhibitions, then have lunch and a break, and then visit the upper level exhibitions. Prepare to spend at least 5 hours here. Totally worth it! It's only $80 pesos per person. The gift shop is pretty cute too!

Great museum with unique artifacts but there is a lot of room for improvement. The placement of items inside each exhibit seems random and does not follow any chronological order, which makes following the story of any specific civilization unnecessarily confusing. Virtually all the descriptions are written in Spanish so get ready to use translate apps all the time and make sure to have a battery pack for your phone. They provide an app that has some audio description in English, however, the app is not maintained well and is extremely buggy. Moreover, there is no good way to figure out which items are included and the app or how to find them aside from a couple of pre-planned tours that the app offers. I would love to see a number displayed on each item, which then can be typed in the app to get relevant text/audio of each specific item. With a bit more English and some work on the app this place can be incredible!

This is truly an impressive museum. It is huge, so bring comfortable shoes. I like how the museum is sectioned off into different periods of history in Mexico, and with different groups of cultures and peoples featured. Highlight sections include Teotihuacan, Maya, Mexica. Those are the must sees as instructed by the museum guide to me. Most sections contain detailed English explanations next to the Spanish. That was very helpful for me. There are also films that played throughout the exhibit in both English and Spanish. I love how there is the perfect of mix of culture and history in this museum. One is completely in all of the arts of the past, and these artifacts and artwork, sculptures, and some reproductions cannot be easily seen in other museums of the world. It is very precious. I am personally very inspired by the details storytelling of the best.

Very well made place. Just the architecture itself is amazing! As I said when I was there, one of the most beautiful man made things I have seen. I am not exaggerating. Like every museum of this category, you need more than one visit to fully appreciate all the exhibition halls. There is a lot to see and it could be a little overwhelming, even for a one day visit. I mainly gave my attention to the architecture of the place and walked through some of the expositions that I wanted to visit. Do not hesitate to visit this Museum, it's 100% worth it.

Wow... what an incredible museum. I think it’s now my favorite museum in the world and I’ve only seen about 20% of the whole thing. I’m very impressed with everything about this place. Great place for a date, or to come on the weekend. It’s free on Sunday’s which is really great too

Such a beautiful museum! We spent two hours here, and only got through maybe 1/4 of the exhibits. Definitely a half-day activity if you want to get through it all. A wide variety of artifacts, from bones, to pottery, to photographs, to building materials. I didn't think I'd be so interested in anthropology! BONUS: the restaurant & cafe here are amazing and very reasonably priced, given the quality of food. I

Beautiful architecture meets insightful and intriguing displays mixed with art. Situated on the edge of the national park an afternoon spent wandering around exploring displays and sights is a great addition to a Mexico city adventure. We used google translates app to translate the placards that were not already in English, but there are guides available on Viator or airbnb experiences. Admission was 80 pesos when we visited.

This is a world class museum for anyone who visits Mexico City to visit. It is huge so you will need some time (at least 90 mins) and nice shoes to walk around. You will get to learn and see a lot. There can be a lot of people and you can't buy the tickets in advance so I'd be there early when it opens at 10am. Not everything is written in English so your AI translator app would be helpful if you don't know Spanish.

I recently visited the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City, and I must say that it was an absolutely incredible experience. Having traveled to museums worldwide, particularly those focusing on anthropology, I can confidently say that this museum stands out in a league of its own. The museum's grandeur is immediately evident, and it's incredibly well-organized and spotlessly clean, making the visit all the more enjoyable. One aspect that truly sets the Anthropology Museum apart is the way it skillfully narrates the history and stories of this fascinating region. They employ a unique approach by blending photography with lifelike depictions of indigenous people. This creative combination, alongside authentic tools and elements from the region, immerses visitors in a realistic portrayal of the area's rich history. To add some background, the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City is renowned worldwide for its comprehensive collection of artifacts and exhibits related to the indigenous cultures of Mexico. Established in 1964, the museum's purpose is to preserve and showcase the incredible cultural diversity of Mexico's native peoples. It's situated in Chapultepec Park, a beautiful and sprawling green space, and it's housed in an architecturally impressive building. To get there from downtown Mexico City, you can easily take a taxi or public transportation, with various bus and metro lines serving the area. The museum's vast size means that a full exploration can take at least a day, but it's time well spent. The exhibits are not only informative but also beautifully presented, offering visitors a deep understanding of the history and culture of the region. In my opinion, the Anthropology Museum in Mexico City is a must-visit for anyone interested in the rich and diverse heritage of this part of the world.

What an amazing place! This has been one of the most memorable places to visit in all of Mexico. The exhibition of 23 rooms is impressive, to say the least. Plan on spending half the day, at the very least, to see some of its gems. We had limited time and saw the exhibits in three rooms in four hours. With the exception of the Tenochtitlan room, we flew through the other rooms. There's that much to see. The Tenochtitlan room was the most impressive to me given the fact that you can see THE Aztec "calendar," which really isn't a calendar. Other pieces are just as impressive, especially if you know your history. If you only have a couple of hours, go. You can get through the Tenochtitlan room in 2 hours. It's well worth it. I will return to see more of these remarkable gems.

Very large. Very nice architecture. Nice lush garden. Lots of exhibits. Lots of very large impressive sculptures and artifacts, lots of huge chunks of obsidian, cool recreations of tombs, and some modern art and murals too. It's a nice place to visit even if you just walk around and look at things without reading the descriptions. The water column in the center of the complex is very cool

To be honest, the museum itself really had lot of great and valuable exhibition. One to call out in particular is the Mayan Calendar which was extremely well preserved and actually looked quite astonishing. The museum itself also wasn’t too bit to walk through and you can actually get through it in one day, provided you don’t really every text. With that in mind, I finished the entire place in 2 hrs. Why? It’s also the reason it’s a 3 star, it’s the fact that there’s very minimal English through out meaning you as a non Spanish speaker really are just mostly looking at photos and items without knowing what’s what. Which I’m fine with. Though I did expect more for such an important museum. Exhibits along is 5 stars, but the language and setup pulled my score down unfortunately.

World Class Museum! Staff is uniformed, helpful and easy to identify in a large crowd. The entire museum is very large so prepare to spend half a day here at least. The whole day if your going to take your time and read about each exhibit. I had to cram 3 hours and could not see it all. I would love to go back and I intend to. I like how it starts with human and ancestor evolution exhibits. I later saw a model of ancient humans risking their lives to kill a mastodon. In the background was very large painting illustrating the megafauna that once roamed the earth and is now extinct. There was super sized bison at one time! Imagine that. Extinct due to humans. We do like the hunt the big ones dont we? I relate this to the fact that the days of capturing super sized tuna just to beat records are gone as well. I personaly discourage hunting purely for the best trophy animals. I imagine your taking the best out of the gene pool like that. The mesoamerican pieces are further in. Its like going into a time machine and getting a glimpse of mesoamerican life. Facinating! Many pieces here are large and highly detailed works of art. Im an artist myself and i can tell master artists created these pieces. Many took serious skill, time and effort to create. Sadly not many big wood pieces survived the conquest but this museum has some extremely rare ones. The place is full of art and treasure. Its free for Mexican nationals if i remember correctly. Either that or nicely discounted with ID proof. Yes lots of tourists here from all over the world. You can take the subway to the museum (if your not a complete sissy) to avoid traffic and save valuable time, if your willing to walk a little or you can take a taxi the rest of the way or the whole way. Uber is available too. Its located in a large park in a safer and beautiful part of the city. Like anywhere of course theres good parts and bad parts of this mega city. If your not familiar with the city dont show off or wear jewelry on the subway and go bashing the place in reviews. Common sense. The gift shop has some nice replicas and souvenirs of course so be prepared to take home something nice if you really like mesoamerican art or you will wish you prepared. Taxis are right outside of the museum and can take you to where you need to go. I will plan to bring back larger replicas with me next time.

One of my favorite museums in Mexico City! I always find myself visiting whenever I'm in town. It has quite an expansive collection and you'll probably need a few hours to get through them all, as there are exhibits both indoor and out. Well worth the visit! Absolutely world class museum, I would recommend it to anybody. I spent about 5 hours here, but could have happily spent double that. There are two “routes” a more archaeological selection on the first story and a more anthropological/cultural selection on the second, I would advise doing both (going counter-clockwise from the first story all the way around the courtyard and doing the same for the second floor). Many exhibits had explanations in English. It was really cool seeing artifacts I recall from my grade school textbooks: the Aztec sunstone, Mesoamerican ballplayers, colossal heads, etc. The admission was very reasonable at $80MXD.

This place is amazing, sadly we were told we could see it in one hour, this is not the case you need at least half a day to go around the 4 pavilions. We were able to see the stone work and were amazed at the detail in their work. If you are in Mexico you have to visit this place.

I loved the ancient history exhibit. The other exhibits for medieval to modern history were specific to Mexico history and might interest more to those who have lived in Mexico for a while, or interested in Mexico history. The small statues, and artwork to demonstrate the life of early humans were fantastic (pictures attached). At just USD 4$, it's worth checking out.

You may be wondering why this museum receives nearly 5 stars with tens of thousands of reviews. I don’t need only read my review to understand that this museum is a certain quality destination for any traveler in Mexico City. There’s no better way to get a sense for the cultural history and Myon roots that are burrow deep within the walls of many buildings around the city. The artifacts are copious and in many cases exceptional to look at. I absolutely and strongly recommend this museum.

A gem of a museum. There may be a bit of a wait to get tickets but the wait is worth it. The admission price is only 5 USD so it is incredibly affordable, compared to US museums, to visit multiple days. According to my local relatives, you need to allocate at least two days if you want to see every exhibit. I visited for about 5 hours and I did not see even half of the exhibits so definitely allow yourself quite a bit of time if you're like me and want to read every plaque and admire every little detail. It was an amazing place to learn about the diverse groups that have inhabited the country and to learn more about my ancestors and culture. Wear comfortable shoes because you'll do a lot of walking. Also if you don't speak Spanish, you may want to bring along someone that can translate for you since most of the info is in Spanish. I don't recommend the restaurant, but if you really want to eat there, it's not terrible.

One of highlights of our visit to Mexico City was visiting the National Museum of Anthropology. An amazing museum showing the national treasures of Mexico and Mayan history. The spaciousness is impressive and the vast square concrete umbrella in the courtyard with waterfall is stunning. You could spend all day in here and it is worth getting a guide to show you the different rooms and timeline of Mexican culture.

Absolutely impressive collection, and entrance is only 85pesos, worth the visit no doubt. There are 2 floors, each having 11 halls. The ground floor is the Archeology area, takes you around the region's ancient cultures, habits, beliefs, artifacts, etc. Upper floor is the Ethnography area, exhibiting Mexico's indigenous group's current cultural diversity. Would take at least 3hours to comfortably tour the inside. Cons: - only a few descriptions have English translation as well, 95% is Spanish only. - most artifacts are not dated. - half of the top floor was locked down.

Excellent museum. Extremely educational and informative. Ran by professionals, where eras of Mexican history are nearly organised in different exhibitions. Even the restaurant and adjoining coffee shop are great quality. The only criticism of the coffee shop would be that it needs a selection of crisps and dry snacks such as popcorn or crisps. The museum gift shop is absolutely rammed with top quality Mexican production items. Seeing is believing (check my video)!

I loved this museum. Very clean, spacious, and educational. You can spend the entire day there appreciating all the displays. Most of the information plaques are only in Spanish which was a disappointment for me since I couldn't learn about those particular pieces. I recommend adding English plaques as well or a digital recorded guide system. Regardless I'm sure I'll return if I'm back in the area.

This museum is absolutely gorgeous. It has a really good collection of prehispanic artifacts and shows the cultural richness of Mexico. Even if museums is not your thing, I’d still recommend going to this one. It has inside and outside exhibits. It would take you at least half a day to go through it. If you’re a nerdy type and like reading everything - then add a few hours more. A few tips: they have a nice gift shop, not very expensive with nice souvenirs. If you going to eat there, I’d opt for a cafeteria. Restaurant is expensive for Mexican measures and not good. The waiter that served us was pushy and borderline rude. The food is mediocre. So get a sandwich in the cafeteria, check out the museum and then eat something decent outside.

A stunning and amazing museum with great and interesting exhibits that are bound to take up your attention for several hours. Displays were well presented and laid out. The rich and comprehensive collection well presented the different civilizations in Central America. The largest museum in Mexico and one of the best in the world. A must see in Mexico

This museum is definitely a must visit. We didn’t anticipate the number of artifacts that this museum holds. Make sure to visit the outdoors. Which you will see additional artifacts. I would also recommend giving yourself at a half day to take in all the exhibits.

Beautiful building and amazing installations. I should have split it over 2 days. There is so much to see and read about Mexicos' extensive history. Advice: Bring your own coffee. The cafe line was all the way outside and barely moving. I couldn't wait that long.

Do not skip. Quite honestly the best Museum I’ve ever seen. Incredible collection of priceless pre-Hispanic art and cultural legacy. The Mexica exhibit is not to be missed. Big museum, you’ll need 2-3 hours to really absorb what’s available and have the time to read/translate the materials if you don’t speak Spanish. There is also a restaurant with good food, and a coffee shop with good coffee. The souvenir shop has a great selection of unique items as well. You could budget even more time to explore Chapultepec park if you like and turn this into a full day event.

This Museum is probably the most amazing Museum I have ever been in! It is ginormous. You really could spend a whole week here, but moving at a Brisk Pace our family passed through and got a glimpse of everything in about 4 hours. Definitely a must-visit while in Mexico City! The building feels very unique, the collections are remarkably special and very well displayed. So much bang for your buck! #culture #mustsee

(Translated by Google) It is an extraordinary place to go through pre-Columbian history. The building itself is already an architectural jewel with a very interesting proposal, it has more than twenty exhibition rooms around the main courtyard and almost everyone stops to contemplate a great column from which a cascade of falling water seems to flow. free (its proper name is "the umbrella"). As they told us, the idea was to recall the figure of a totem. At the time of our visit, the luggage storage service was enabled so we left our backpacks. Among the works that I liked the most is the goddess Chalchiuhtlicue and the Stone of the Sun. As we could not do the entire route in the time we had stipulated, the guard informed us that if we wanted to return the next day after 5:00 p.m., we would not be charged the entrance again. Upon entering we were informed that we could take pictures without problems, while we will not use flash. But if we wanted to make videos we had to ask for and pay for a special permit. The Museum has a cafeteria / restaurant (on the ground floor) and a shop (in the lobby).

An amazing place to spend a day with your kids. It's an amazing space with loads to learn. Well kept. It's a history story on the evolution of mankind itself and its progress towards modernity. Loads of space and well maintained exhibits. Post covid protocols maintained really well. Also ensure in ase you are carrying a backpack it needs to be slung on your front or side and not on your back, so that you accidentally don't hit an exhibit. Ensure you are masked at all times to prevent getting a gentle low down from one of the guards around the place

Great museum! $4 totally worth it, lots of history and very nicely done with separated exhibitions. Closed on Sundays and Mondays We came on a Wednesday and it was perfect , cuz it wasn't packed so we were able to really enjoy our time. They are super strict on the walking path , like you couldn't walk out if you decided not to walk through the whole exibition which was kind of annoying sometimes.

Don't come tired. This place is HUGE and has SO much to see! If you don't speak Spanish, you may want to put Google Translate on your phone. Most of the major signs were bilingual with English; however, I'd say most were only in Spanish. Even with that, it's still worth visiting. The exhibitions are truly outstanding. There aren't signs directing you to the entrance, so look for the bridge near the building. With COVID precautions (even though the city is currently at a green light) they will spray your clothes, check your temperature, and only 1 person from your group can stand in the line to get tickets. Just an FYI so you aren't surprised.

Of the many great museums of the world, the Museo National de Anthropologia sits comfortably at the highest ranks. Surrounded by a beautiful park to wander, sit, and enjoy there are street vendors and entertainers. Professionals perform rare ceremonies like the Sky Dance atop a 100ft pole. Inside the museum the grandeur of the structure reflects the importance of the treasures inside. You must see it for yourself. Friendly, helpful staff. Easy access to guides at the entrance. Mobility accessible Affordable and free for children (though best suited for those 10+) Complementary bag check Nice, clean restrooms ATM

This is the best museum I have ever visited. The various periods and cultures are nicely presented in order and you need a lot of time to actually see everything. I managed the lower floors in 2 afternoons, and could not see the upper floors. The way of life of various cultures over time is easily seen with the help of reconstructions and also thousands of artifacts and tools recovered from ancient sites.

As if the National Museum of Anthropology were not enough, there are at least five other fantastic museums and tourist sites within a park-enclosed walking distance. Superb museum, definitely visit & allow plenty of time for it! Very informative, many explanations were translated into English, too. There's a separate fee for cameras but nobody asked if I had one for my DSLR. Full price entry is Mex$80 (Feb 2020), tours available but you have to register—I didn't, but saw a short Mexican guy with a cane giving a tour in English, he was great: funny, informative, knowledgeable, and insightful in turns. Saw other guides too, can't say I liked all of them. The tours are much quicker than ambling along at your own pace. We had about 4.5 hrs there, and it wasn't enough. You'll want a pit stop (at least one) halfway through, and thankfully there is a café, a restaurant, and plenty of benches inside and around the central courtyard to rest on. I don't think your own food & drink is allowed in the museum. I carried only a small camera bag, that was okay, but there's a cloakroom available. The gift shop is excellent, everything I saw was made in Mexico, many of them handmade. Huge variety; from trinkets to books to jewellery.

This is one of the best museums in the world. If your in Mexico City, you need to check this place out. It’s huge and has loads of great history and artefacts. It’s got a great restaurant (that’s a bit overpriced) but it serves really nice food. Its up there with the V&A and the Louvre

Such a fabulous place to visit!! You'll need a good 4-5 hours to really enjoy this place, so clear up your day. It ends up being a little bit too much, since there is SO MUCH to see. I recommend, if you have the time, to read up on Mexico's history so you aren't so lost when you get there, especially since it lacks so much description and explanations in languages other than Spanish. There are a few guides outside who can give you a tour, but no guarantees on their language expertise. There's not much information in English, so Japanese and other languages are out of the question. The staff was having trouble trying to help someone in English who needed some information. That said, with some info and Google translate, you'll be able to have much more clarity and see some really spectacular sights. They have a restaurant but I do recommend bringing your own water, that you can drink out of the exhibit rooms. They have good social distance practices and have a limited capacity since the pandemic rules requires places not to get crowded. Lovely gift shop and clean restrooms. Enjoy learning about Mexico!

  • 5/5 Maria Arriola F. 3 years ago on Google

(Translated by Google) It is an incredible place to learn all the history of our country because they make it learn faster and in a fun way because it is only a matter of visualizing what the objects they used were like, how their houses were and what they used to create them, such as it was the people and their way of thinking, among many others. The things that are exhibited come with a description to understand them more clearly or you can tell those who work there to explain anything that is exhibited there and the things that are displayed there cannot be touched. All the material that is shown there is separated by rooms to see what culture they were from and what age they are. Everything is well organized and well done. If you are going to go on Sundays, which is when it is crowded with people, I suggest you go to the museum early because then people stay standing in a single piece on display and they won't let you see or take a picture of it. Beautiful museum full of both historical finds and replicas about Aztecs and Mayas cultures! Suggested after a visiting the Teotihuacan pyramids site!

In my opinion the best museum in Mexico. If you are into Mexico's history, this is the place.

I'm not a museum person but i really enjoyed it. I liked the story telling of each section and preservance of each artefacts. The only sad part was that the majority of the text were in native language and it was tiring to use translate app on phone all the time. Atleast i hope they start an audio tour of some sort for tourists (non-spanish speakers).

You could spend days here! So much amazing information and history!

large place to walk around and lots to see; my bet is you would have your best experience here with a guide to go over explaining more things of significance to you.

Beautiful museum highlighting the rich culture and history of Mexico. Could easily spend 4+ hours here! Was well worth it!

Huge museum, don't expect to see it all. An absolute must-visit for anyone interested in or unfamiliar with Aztec, Mayan and other indigenous cultures of Mexico. Fair entrance price and beautiful architecture, only note that many of the signs are not in English so it may be useful to get a tour guide (or go with someone who speaks Spanish).

Very good, the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because you have to wear ur mask. If you take it off for one second you get surrounded by security!

Wonderful museum for the richness of collections, the display, lighting, architecture. Most important findings of pre Hispanic era.

One of the most amazing museums I've ever been to. So many exhibitions and elements. Definitely 'must see' for Maya Culture lover.

An absolut MUSST SEE! Whether it is a start bevore you travel around and visit the Temples or as a finish, when you have seen them all and now you like to have a fundament background. I recommend a guide. We booked a Combi-Tour with the Chapultepec Castle and it was wounderful. Also no problem, if you can't walk a lot. Just remember, the famous fethercrown is a replica. If you wanna see the real one, you have to go to Vienna!

Very nice place to know about the history and appreciate how rich is Mexico in terms of culture. You'll get to know the different rituals made by some of the cultures that even are present nowadays. The area of Mexicas and Mayas are the most incredible ones, but the rest are also very interesting. In this place you'll know the meaning of the symbols on each one of the sculptures, like goddess or even the Aztec Calendar. Also how the Wikarikas use the Peyote to venerate their gods, why they hunt deers, and so on. It takes a while to walk the whole site since it has different areas which represent different cultures in Mexico. Definitely a place worth to visit. The entry costs around 80MXN. Also outside the museum, you'll find people offering guided tours, even some of them are given in English for those who don't speak Spanish. Moreover, most of the sculptures and texts contain the translate in English, so in case you don't want to pay for the guided tour, you can freely read to understand each one of the sculptures and their meanings.

If you go here you need a minimum of 3 hours and that’s just the main floor. I cannot express how well done and organized this museum is. The architecture of the museum alone is impressive with its skyscraper water fountain; it combines both indoor and outdoor exhibits, underworld tombs and links them all perfectly. A must see for history ir cultural buff.

The must-go museum when in the city of Mexico. A great anthropological exhibition of Mexico. The ticket per person was 85 pesos. No long cues and all COVID safety measures were followed.

We visited off of the back of our Teotihuacan trip and found the museum quite good. The museum is split into a lot of different sections and honestly if you want to see everything you will need an entire day. It was huge and we only managed to get through 4 exhibits in 1.5 hours. The main signs are translated but a lot of the information on individual pieces was only in Spanish - this is fine but something I wish I'd known in advance. The museum itself is very interesting and nicely laid out with things to see both inside and outside. It was good and pretty inexpensive to visit. Combine it with a trip to the park. We didn't need to buy a ticket in advance but when you enter you go through a bag search and security check and have to check in any bigger bags to their lockers (free). It was very clean and open. My favourite thing was a sad frog statue. It is big and amazing! No replicas to buy though... Sad times.

Outstanding museum and thousands of amazing artifacts. A museum that is worth visiting not only if you are traveling to Ciudad de Mexico but it is probably worth it to go just to the museum and then plan your visit to CDMX. Go early in the morning to avoid hoards of tourists. There’s a good restaurant. And it is family friendly… Anthropology at its best!

The best: - amazing place to gain a great first look at the Mexican history and origins of its population. - many of the objects and elements exhibited here are originals. To improve: - there should be a map recommending how to do the visit so that it cn be followed chronologically. Pro-tip: - consider this place will take almost 1 full day to visit - loads of walking so bring compfy shoes - might be quite a heavy museum for kids. Or they will run out of patience soon

This place is amazing! Definitely recommend getting there early because you will need all day to truly see the whole place! Lots of artifacts and lots of reading but everything is really interesting!

  • 5/5 Maricela J. 9 months ago on Google
It's very big about 6 buildings no AC so it very much depends on the weather outside. There is a restaurant connected so if want to stop and eat or grab a cool drink. The water tower is definitely not to play in they will tell you something with a whistle or they will come to you. I would say it's definitely an all day thing to see every little thing they have so would recommend starting early. Lots of benches to rest on coming towards the building and inside every building.

  • 5/5 Krzysztof Z. 8 months ago on Google
Simply fantastic! Spent 5 hours there, and still couldn’t leave. English-language explanations accompany the main exhibits, but it would have been nice if all atrefacts were accompanied with bilingual Spanish/English descriptions.

Amazing! This museum has so many displays. We were here for three hours and did not get to see the entire museum. It is so large, beautiful and clean with much history. There is no need to pre purchase your tickets or to even have to hire a tour guide to take you here. It sits on the Chapultepec park. We took an Uber there and it dropped us off right next to the entrance. We just went up a short flight of stairs after turning the corner. We purchased the tickets upon arrival. We had to check in our umbrella bags and water bottles. Then we proceeded to explore the museum.

It is an amazing museum with a great collection. It was a pleasure to discover the different cultures with much information in spanish as well in english. They also have some structures of the different cultures outside. There you can take amazing photos. It was pity that the upper floor with the additional mayan stuff was closed. We went there on a late Friday afternoon. It has a lot of people, but it wasn't too much. For buying the tickets we had to wait about 5 minutes. For going in you have to pay an entrance fee of 90 pesos (about 5 $). You can pay it by card. It was worth it to go there. Calculate enough time for seeing the stuff, I can recommend at least 2.5 hours. If you are interested in history, then you should go to this museum.

  • 5/5 Bartosz R. 7 months ago on Google
Super cool place that is very worth the visit! The ticket is 90 Pesos ~ 6$ for an adult. There are many interesting exhibitions, that can overwhelm even the toughest museum goers. Kids will have fun there, but have in mind that it's a long long walk there. Amazing exhibits, breathtaking history, worth visiting!

One of the best museums I've ever been to! So much to see, so much to learn about ancient time of Mexico. Be ready to spend there about 3 hours as most of the exhibits are just stunning!

  • 5/5 Phil V. 7 months ago on Google
Very well presented artifacts from the past. Huge displays of historic and anthropological value. From the tiniest of stone blades and fossilized bones to huge stone facades traces the story of Mexico's past. The display explains the evolution of man kind from neanderthals to Homo Sapiens and how they spread from African origins eventually inhabiting NA over millions of years.

A must in CDMX. The first floor needs an update and descriptions in English. The have the same displays from the 70’s. I tried the restaurant for the first time (I am from Mexico City). The tortas are VERY good. Take a break and enjoy the greenery while enjoying an excellent torta de carnitas.

An extremely detailed and thorough museum with tons to see. The entire building took us a little over three hours, though that includes reading all signage and seeing every artifact. The fee for visiting is 90 pesos, though there are free days for locals. There are heavy crowds on weekends, so make sure to arrive early. The museum itself takes you through human kinds origins in the Americas, then chronicles the lives, cultures, religions, and histories of the various indigenous peoples who made up the pre-Columbian societies of Mexico. The museum has signage in English and español, though some of it is only in español. You will learn a lot during your visit and see some truly excellent archaeology!

The greatest museum I have visited in Latin America by far. I truly enjoyed a 4 hours visit, discovering ancient and Mexican history. Specially, the room at which they display the Sun Stone, the scale and craft diversity of the collection is astonishing. A must in CDMX.

MUST VISIT when in CDMX!!! It has an amazing and large collection of indigenous Mexican pieces. It’s so interesting, be ready to spend many hours if you want to see everything. I would recommend to go with a little bit of research on the context of different indigenous groups so you can follow along better.

So much to see! Dedicate a day to this. Come with lots of energy and be sure to take a break and enjoy the restaurant on site. We didn’t know about the restaurant until after 3 hours there. A break to recharge would have been welcome.

Its a must ! For adults and kids , everyone will enjoy it alike. Even if you go with your family, if you have venture through the wonders of Mexican culture. You will undoubtedly love this place. Specially if you ve been to the aztecs and mayans ruins. It would give you a better glance and understanding about its history. Something we lack when we visit the historical sites. You will find the stelas with the codices and scripts from the history of this cultures. We dont usually see this. I think is one of the few places you can do that in México. If you know of any other museum like this, worht visiting please let me know! It was as shocking as the gold museum in Bogotá, Colombia. If you ve been there you would know what im talking about.

I loved it! It was on my bucket list for CDMX. Every room showed was a different indigenous group. Mexico is so rich in culture.

It is a perfect place to visit and learn about the history of Mexico through in-depth research and the work of many archaeologists. It is suitable for visiting with family, friends or partner and they have highly trained interpretive guides. Thank you for the quality service.

Absolutely spectacular. Lots to see and learn about Mexican history and culture through the years. Backpacks are not allowed however it can be left at the lockers to the left as you enter the museum.

Well .. all I can say is get ready to have your mind blown! This place is on a league of its own! From the astonishing architecture of the building itself to the million ways human history is portrayed in it! There are many indoor and outdoor exhibitions, many recreations of what an old dwelling would look like and how things and tools would partake in an everyday life! There are temples at magnificent sizes, model cities, ceremonies recreated with immense detail! Wall paintings that portray different things at different times! It is truly fascinating how every single little piece plays a part in the story being told! Make sure to allocate at least 3 hours to it just to walk around some of the pieces! To be honest it takes more than a day to fully explore the whole thing! There are many educational pieces for non-anthropologists as well that teaches you how things decay, how they get preserved and how they have been explored! There is a cafe and a restaurant inside aswell! Cafe was great! The giftshop is also good! So much to explore there as well! If you travel to Mexico City do not pass this place over! Note: they do not allow backpacks in! But there is a locker with ofcourse a line to leave your backpacks and waterbottles for free!

beautiful collection of ancient Mexican history. Especially the famous sun stone. It's a shame the texts and the information on the boards are not being translated into English. So if you're a non Spanish speaker you barely have information available apart from the very basics. In my opinion this can be an easy win for the attractiveness of this great place. Add some multi language audio guides and make it more of an experience.

An amazing experience. A must to visit while in Mexico city. easy to get there. metro Auditorio. Best if arrived early. It might take you 2 days to see the most important of this museum. 95$pesos entrance for adults. Great souvenir shop but pricey

If you know not much about Mexico, your knowledge will be brought up to speed by visiting this remarkable museum. Situated in a nice and vast park, it gets busy mid-morning, so try to arrive early (less queuing x tickets). You may need more than a day if you really want to take it all in. The quality of the items displayed is fantastic and there are also outdoor real size copies of buildings. A nice cafeteria cum restaurant allows some rest and refuelling...

No doubt about it, this has been one of the best museums I've ever visited in my life. The quality and extension of their collection is amazing. Having been travelling around Mexico for the past 2 months and now being able to see elements from pretty much all the archeological areas we've visited was fantastic.

Great museum and definitely worth going. Consider spending 2 to 3 hours. Beautiful pieces of the big Mexican civilization (Maya, Olmec, Aztec, …). A bit too bad very few plaques are translated in English. Everything in Spanish. Considering it’s one of the most prestigious museum of the country, i had expected more documentation in English available.

There is soooo much to explore for people interested in history and culture this can be interesting and easily acquire half or full day from your itinerary or it can be boring for people not into such kind of stuff. It helps in connecting the dots between history shared by different cultures and regions in mexico make sure you plan well. There is a free locker facility, cafe and ample sitting space.
