DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I have stayed in my fair share of hostels, in SF all the way to Barcelona, Venice, and Prague. This was by far the most disgusting and unsanitary hostel I have ever stayed in. Before we were even allowed to check-in, we checked out the hostel inside, set our things down, and yes, I did take a much needed shower after camping. The bathrooms and shared kitchen were so gross and unclean. I asked Nick for a partial refund since we hadn't even checked in yet and used the room, and he refused because we had placed our stuff down for an hour and I took a shower. Ridiculous. I really hope they get their act together and invest in cleaning supplies. It really is not that difficult to clean a kitchen, scrub a toilet, or clean a sink.

I came to rent a room, but they didn’t even let me into the hostel, an employee met me at the entrance and said that he does not rent out a room or a bed for residents of California, I explain to him that I am not a resident of California, that I have a foreign passport and a driver’s license. But the man kindly sent me. I hope you get shut down soon, Nazis

Great manager! I accidentally booked another hostel and came here instead. When I figured out i booked a one 7 miles away, he gave me a bottle of water and tried to find me a way. He was probably Indian or Parkistan (sorry if i am wrong) but the great hospitality i experienced ever in my 2 weeks biz trip!

Stay away from this hostel! I recently booked at the European hostel in San Francisco, but I ended up checking out immediately due to the poor conditions in half an hour due to adamant behavior of the caretaker. The room I was given was stinking and smelled like sewage. When I tried to complain to the caretaker, they were completely obnoxious and refused to change my room. To make matters worse, there were rats running around the kitchen while I was waiting and talking to the customer care of Expedia. I was terrified of falling sick, so I checked out and moved to a nearby hostel. The new place(Orange Village Hostel) was a breath of fresh air in comparison - the breakfast was good (they served waffle too), the guest service was amazing, and the room and lobby were clean. Price for room at Orange Hostel was just 45$ (includes breakfast) If you're planning a trip to San Francisco, I highly recommend avoiding the European hostel (It's a spot on the name of European Hostel). Instead, opt for the other hostel nearby that offered me such a pleasant stay. You won't be disappointed. Also, for people saying this is what you could expect in SF, I can guarantee you there are better place. Don't let such a bad, unmaintained place and rude people carry on with this kind of service.

Such a bad hostel - that’s why SAN FRANCISCO DIDN’T WIN THE SUPERBOWL - AGAIN!!!! One of the worst hostels I’ve ever stayed at. Service was so bad, staff weren’t very good. Area is dangerous. Rooms terrible. Such a bad hostel - that’s why SAN FRANCISCO DIDN’T WIN THE SUPERBOWL - AGAIN!!!!

Very complicated staff and they're process... Check in and so on... Rooms and sheets are dirty, kitchen and fridge is super bad... I don't even want to start about the bathroom... I just used the shower right after cleaning... After 2 minutes shower your standing in ankle deep water... Still tons of hair everywhere... Right after cleaning! Horrible place! Yes cheap but where's the value?

The staff went out of their way to mail me my ID back and thank you so much for that. People! Do understand that this is a hostel, meaning, people you may share a room with may not be as clean or quiet or courteous. It’s also San Fran, not the nicest of cities, it’s only gotten worse since my first visit in 2018. Can the property be cleaner? Sure. But be reasonable, it’s a hostel, people are in and out all the time and it’s cheap! Can’t beat the price. So bring flip flops, keep all your things in a locker, keep it to yourself and you’ll be fine. Be very careful out and about SF that’s a totally different situation. Hopefully by the time y’all read this, the kitchen will be renovated. Good luck!

Even 1 Star is too much. The other bad reviews are right. The Hostel is inbetween a very shady block with many (drunk) homeless. The hostel’s cleanliness should be questioned by health agencies. It really bad, worse than in undeveloped countries. In a 6 bed room, 3 pillows were fool of blood stains. It stank, just like in the road outside the hostel. I told the staff to check the blood stains on pillows and brown stains on the bed sheets. They just told me I should put on the linens they gave me from the laundry room. However they were also stained lightly. Regarding the toilets: Don’t use them! This place is clearly to be checked by health authorities. Just shouldn’t sleep there for any money! Better go to the Green Tortoise Hostel!! 35$ per Night, amazing staff, sauna and breakfast included!!!

The owner/front desk is a piece of dog $hit. Why pa6 a dollor sleeping on the shreet would be a step up. Super rude and intitled. I was in a great mood on vacation and To have a host who cant even allow you to enjoy you hard earned get away. Kept point to resetve the right sign. Told keep the two nights i rent rather lose $200 than argue with a broken english habib. Bed natizi. This was the interaction at check in. Honesty I cant wait to see this guy fail.

In an alley. Sketchy as hell. Parking is not on site, you need to park at a public garage that’s a 10 minute walk away ($25 for the night). The place stinks, the bathrooms nasty as hell. Thank goodness I’m only passing through. I’ve stayed at way better hostels for LESS.

Location was unsafe, staff was dead asleep upon arrival, dirty and unsafe conditions - switched twice for rooms and got a private until we could get to our other hotel for the duration of our stay. I would recommend never staying here.

Extremely dirty dorms and common areas. The pillowcase had a clump of hair on it when I unfolded it. Excessively dirty bathrooms and shower. No visible cleaning schedule - dorms, showers and sinks still dirty after 24 hours. Mouse spotted running around the kitchen. Mix of long-term residents and backpackers/tourists in the dorms, with a long-term resident working during the night and coming back drunk and rowdy at 1 am. The area is iffy and I would not recommend walking around alone.

Loved the room! Loved the management! Mingled with guests who were also awake at 5:00am. I'd give 5+ stars if I could. Thank you everybody! I send out Love and peace to you ALL!

I never stayed at this place so I can't speak to the quality of the rooms. I am reviewing the very poor service I recieved. After booking a package through Orbitz, I got a message from them that they closed at 10 PM and I would need to make arrangements if I was arriving after that. My flight is arriving after midnight. I called and said I was arriving after hours and the guy immediately, and very rudely I might add, said they don't allow check in's after closing and said I should have read the policy more carefully. When I informed him I booked through Orbitz, he looked up my name and said, again very rudely, that they don't work with Orbitz and my booking was through Expedia. I was looking right at my Orbitz confirmation and told him so but he was adamant it was through Expedia, not Orbitz. It was bad enough that they don't have after hours check in, since people have late flights all the time, but his attitude made it worse. If I am getting this kind of service before I even arrive, that's enough for me to know this is not somewhere I want to stay. I cancelled and booked elsewhere.

I stayed at this hostel a couple of years ago and it was a well kept, modern hostel. Very clean and helpful staff. I tried to rent again a couple week is ago and the front desk clerk said he couldn't honor my reservation because I am a 'local'. Either I was profiled or the European Hostel has changed their guest policy.

Despite booking more than 2-months in advance, Nick, the front desk manager, canceled a portion of my stay with 1-week notice and refused to provide a refund. Despite calls, I have been denied communication with upper management and have been forced to dispute the credit card charge. Unapologetic, unreliable, and inadequate customer service. Please consider more reliable accommodation options and avoid European Hostel entirely.

I spent only two days out of 3 because we found bed bugs in our room. On top of that, the area is unsafe, the rooms and the facilities are dirty, it's noisy and the staff is rude. We were 6 people separated in 2 different rooms and we all found bed bugs. The staff denied the fact and refused to see the videos. I stayed in more than 200 hostel in my life and this is the worst I've ever seen.

Bad part of town— if you're not familiar with the area, be careful. Don't leave anything in your vehicle. Outside of that, this is an AMAZING hostel!! Quite clean, newly remodeled, with an excellent and helpful staff. I have stayed in a ton of hostels and airbnbs in Europe, and this one really does feel aptly named! Shared common spaces & bathrooms/shower. Only one bathroom per floor right now, but that didn't seem to be an issue.

I was reading the comments previously and I was a little worried about the place I was going to stay, after arriving I found the opposite, the area is not the best nor the worst, it is walkable and safe, the host Nick Re friendly about the rooms or the common spaces correspond to the price quality, the clean bathrooms have paper and soap, in general what I have observed is that it is kept clean, they even change the sheets after a few days, in general a good place to rest.

I'm happy that I stayed in that hostel only for one night. The room was dirty, there were bugs in it, hardly any light. Bathrooms crowded, dirty, usually without even toilet paper. The worst part is the kitchen - just disgusting. Everything is sticky and dirty. Not a place to prepare (not to mention eat) food. The only pro would be the people at the recpetion desk - helpful and nice. Hostel is located in a small street, at night it's kinda scary over there, a lot of homeless people. Public transport from it is ok, but you have to be prepared to ride for around 40 minutes to e.g. Golden Gate. It's a relatively cheap place but I guess it's better to look for other options.

Tucked away in downtown close to a lot of activities. Modestly cleanly kitchen area, but rooms were very well maintained. Nick at front desk was super helpful and flexible.

Better not to go there if you don’t want to ruin your night. I never been to the hotel nor do nothing wrong booking it but I was unreasonably listed on the hotel blacklist. I am confused about that and called to double check what happened, but the staff’s attitude was very offensive and said that I once delayed to check out, but I never go there before. It is the most ridiculous thing I ever experienced. Maybe it’s somebody else whose name is the same as mine do such things, but it is not me. It ruins my president day holiday.

Easily the cheapest and definitely the worst place to stay in San Francisco. Could not sleep my entire stay due to the parties happening every night. It is not safe at all. Lots of druggies, dealers and other strange individuals in the area. Take this into account and don’t come back here at night. San Francisco is such a magical place but for god sake avoid this place if you can.

Currently being remodeled. Could be more attentive to cleanliness and pandemic safety protocols. Be aware of guests that are not as aware of the very real dangers of covid. Met some very awesome guests as well. Such is existence.

There seem to be improvements based on previous reviews. Staff was friendly, and I wasn't asked a $20 deposit for the key (though this was brought up during check-out). Still major improvements are needed. Staff doesn't supply toilet paper or hand soap; this is unsanitary. The toilets need to be checked because the back has problems filling up with water often. Location is good, as long as you don't mind the homeless, as it is within a 5-10 minute walk to the nearest bars. The smell of weed on the street is one of the strongest in San Francisco. One time I saw someone smoking weed right outside the property. Hope this place can survive but also hoping for major improvements.

True hostel experience. Had a private room and got about 3 hours of sleep due to other guest's parties. Bring earplugs, sheets and your own towel.

They were working with power tools all morning then they had rats running around the day room and the parking is not really safe because it’s in a alley where all the homeless people sleep. But for the price you can’t beat it gets the job done.

This place was $15 a night before the pandemic. Terrible value as you pay 50$ to share a small room with 4-5 other people Nd no bathroom. Bathroom is shared down the hall.

Booking was done through Agoda. Reached the hostel and was told that no such booking existed. Only one under my nickname under Expedia. Reception informed me to ask Expedia to change name as they will not let me stay in the hotel. (How can Expedia change the name if it wasnt booked under it?) Used the virtual chat in Agoda only to be informed that i could not change the name as it is a booking policy for the hotel but i am standing there right in the hotel and being told to get the name changed. Wasted $$$ chatting to bots. Tried calling the landline and kept getting cut off. Maybe i got lucky reading from the other reviews. AGODA.. get your act together.

A cheap hostel in downtown. the location is in downtown, but there isn't much to see there, and the streets near the hostel are not safe. The hostel itself was less than enjoyable, with cockroach in the dorm, and a kitchen without even a pot to cook properly and quite dirty.

We stayed for one night within the week. It was quite in the night, other guest were friendly. Service helped us with parking. Area is not the best (crackies). Rooms/Toilet were clean hostelstyle. Would recommend for short stay except for families.

We stayed in this hostel as a group of 10 and had two private rooms. The location is good in terms of accessibility to areas of the city. The hostel also has a kitchen and living room area in the shared space area. The staff were extremely polite, helpful and attentive. They made us feel welcome and safe, I would definitely stay here again.

Very good place to stay for the price! The staff is very nice and helpful, but I wouldn’t stay more than a night or better yet If you absolutely must stay here just check in early and come back to room when you as ready to sleep. This place is only good for a nights bed rest!
