Did
you
know
that
the
idea
of
the
Bay
Bridge
started
as
early
as
the
days
of
the
Gold
Rush,
and
even
Emperor
Norton
had
his
own
eccentric
plans
for
it?
And
a
rail
line
once
ran
on
the
bottom
deck
of
the
bridge?
The
Western
span
of
the
Bay
Bridge
has
always
been
the
"Automotive"
Gateway
to
San
Francisco
to
me
even
though
there's
that
other
San
Francisco
bridge
that
confusingly
calls
itself
Golden
even
though
it's
red
that
holds
the
official
title
for
the
Gateway
to
San
Francisco.
The
Bay
Bridge
has
such
a
rich
history
and
holds
such
spectacular
views
with
the
Embarcadero,
the
Ferry
Building,
and
the
tall
downtown
Financial
District
buildings
as
a
backdrop.
Not
too
shabby!
And
of
course,
after
Loma
Prieta
earthquake
of
1989,
the
old
blue-collar
Eastern
span
of
the
Bay
Bridge
has
been
reborn
as
a
magnificent
work
of
art
and
a
symbol
of
the
Bay
Area's
achievements
in
a
Self-Anchored
Suspension
Bridge.
You
can
even
walk
or
ride
your
bike
up
that
bridge
to
Yerba
Buena
Island.
Striking
picturesque
panoramic
views
from
up
there!
