Very nice zoo. All the animals look so happy. We caught 2 river otters wrestling with each other that was so cute. My daughter really liked all of the giraffes looking so cute as they took treats from their handlers. Giraffes are her favorite animal so she was very happy to see them getting treats. Good for all ages, plenty of space to get around. Just be aware the area the kangaroos are in closes before the rest of the zoo by 1 hour.

Loved our time here. We spent over 3 hours here and although it was raining the animals came out at some point during our visit. It was 40 minutes on public transport from Union Square Station. Well worth visiting. Very big zoo.

I really like this zoo. There were a lot more enclosures that were closed down and looking dilapidated. I hope the zoo can restore these into more usable spaces soon. We didn’t see the hippo, lions and some others, probably because it’s still not hot enough. (?) The pandemic seemed to have taken its toll on this place. Hopefully with a renewed push to visit your local zoo, this place can rebound to the great zoo it once was.

My first time at this zoo and i had a blast! It was very much a great way to spend the day. Having to buy tickets beforehand makes it very easy. Plenty of parking. The food was yummy. The animals were all gorgeous! Bonus its next to the beach! If you haven't been please go and support!

I visited this Zoo just after it was opened, at about 10:30 am. The good news is that the parking lot is available, and it is not crowded at all inside the Zoo.You can also ask employees any unique questions about the Zoo. There was no line to purchase a ticket, it was $25 for SF non- residents. Inside the Zoo, it is a stress free environment. You feel you are not in a San Francisco busy city anymore. It is a good place to spend a few hours everyday in the area like this. The disappointing news is that it was very hard to see any animal in the morning. They were sleeping, hiding or sitting far away. Only a few animals i was able to spot. Perhaps, in the morning it is not the best time to see animals. However, when they feed them, it is probably the most exiting place to be. Even though i saw only a limited number of animals, i felt good to be there and enjoyed some of the exotic areas. The gift shop was very colorful, but unfortunately, it was not as impressive as San Diego's Zoo, CA or Anchorage's Zoo, AK. Also, i wish the store's items were made in the USA. And, this is exactly what foreign tourists are constantly looking for in the American stores. Recomend!!!

Great zoo right by the beach. Lots of great animals to see and interact with. A bit hilly so bring good walking shoes. They have great statues and art to look at as well. I would recommend going right when open as it gets super crowded.

Lions and tigers and bears... oh my!! It's been a long time since I've been to the San Francisco Zoo, and did I have a blast! You'll need at least 4-5 hours to see everything, so wear comfy shoes because you will do a lot of walking! Also, they no longer give out paper maps, but you can take a picture of their posted map on-site or print a downloadable map from their website. Whatever you do, be sure to familiarize yourself with the zoo's layout ahead of time to make the most of your visit. The food is pricey, so you may want to eat beforehand or bring your own food and drinks to enjoy at one of their many picnic tables. There are so many great photo opportunities here! I especially enjoyed seeing: the penguins hanging out on their little island and swimming about, the cuddly koala clinging to a branch, the little wolverine darting around its bushy habitat, the expressive gorilla who looks intelligently back at you (and has all these great camera poses for you, too), and the lovable sloth slowly climbing along winding branches. Oh, and for $7, you can ride the adorable Little Puffer steam train! One could easily spend a whole day here! If you plan to visit the zoo at least twice a year, you may want to consider becoming a member for extra savings! It was so much fun! I hope to go back again soon! Until next time...

My girls and I loved all the animals. It's quite chilly and you'll need to take some breaks in between. I noticed that some people brought their own food and drinks, good idea if you're on a budget. My fave was the peacocks roaming freely in the park and the snow leopard

Great place to spend the day with the family. Bring your walking shoes as there is so much to explore. I would go on a warmer day because a lot of the animals were in hiding on the chilly day we went. The restaurant had the best food we have had at any zoo we have visited. I would highly recommend if you are visiting San Francisco.

Visited the zoo on Monday, overcast most of the day. Signage is good. Murals are beautiful. I appreciate they had sculptures of animals to touch. It's cute you can still use a trunk key to activate audio to tell you about the animals. The animals themselves were mostly sleeping.

Awesome place to bring kids. All animals are well visible, fed, happy and joyful. Great variety of wildlife to look at. Staff is doing a great job with COVID related restrictions - reservations, masks, limited crowds, distancing. Everything is marked and clear. Parking is easy, especially if pre-purchase online. As a perk, they have free EV charging for Tesla and other EV. Bathrooms are super clean. Staff is very nice. Hope to come back soon again.

Great mix of species. Beautiful landscaping and exhibits. We had a great time, saw all but two or three of the hundreds of animals. Highly recommended. Good public transportation and large pay parking lot.

Nice small zoo compared to San Diego or the Bronx zoo. Took about 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Some exhibits were closed and some animals were inside because it was chilly. The cafe prices are sky high. Parking was $11 for a weekday and seemed pretty safe.

The animals are fantastic, but this zoo has definitely seen better days. I visited this zoo 15 years ago, with many of the same exhibits, and the buildings were well kept and cared for. Now the park and much of the area around the park is depressed and run down. The homeless situation in San Francisco is out of control, with impromptu tent cities everywhere, including near the zoo. For one of America's iconic cities with many of America's wealthiest residents, the rich clearly don't care to help their society avoid these tragedies. Though my kids loved the animals, I have to say seeing SF so dirty and run down makes me sad for it's people, California, and the USA.

Absolutely! So much fun. I $11 is a little bit out of my budget for parking. I found out later I could have parked on the street. There was quite a lot on a rainy day but something new to know.

Amazing!!! Place to come and bring your kids! I came from Los Angeles just to visit this zoo with my daughter who is a 3yr old and I highly recommend coming here . Way better than the Los Angeles zoo so many animals to see here and much bigger. They have wheelchairs and strollers to rent if you do not have one. It's very clean and has hand sanitizer in every area. Bring warm clothes cause it's very cold.

Great day out with the family. This zoo is very big with lots of animals and things to do with the kids. Can be a bit pricey but that is as to be expected. We made sure to get our tickets for the morning that way we were able to spend about 3 1/2 hours here and enjoy the day. Would definitely recommend to anyone thinking about going.

Surprised me for sure. This zoo is freaking awesome no denying that. The set up is great, the variety of gorgeous animal to see is outstanding. I'm from L.A and our zoo is twice as big but i just MIGHT (Not saying i am) like this zoo a lil bit better🙈. I will definitely visit again next year

It was very wet when we went. But that played into our favor with a mid week visit. The animals came out to visit even with the weather. Lots of experiences closed due to covid, but that was fine. Staff were friendly and covid cautious, which we appreciated. We spent most of the day there and all the kids enjoyed thenselves. 1 star down because the food at the Lemur cafe was just ok. But didn't deter from the over all experience. Would go again.

We just love the anteater there - there are two of them, at separate locations. Just amazing to look at them walk, play, and eat. Such a wonderfully unique creation! Check out the photos. Other that the anteater, the zoo is all right, a bit on the small side, some animals but not whole lot. Quite some places are under constructions - which gets delayed due to the Covid-19 situation.

I love this zoo because they have animals that I don’t expect seeing are here. But then again, I rarely go to zoos. They were so cute beside the insect zoo, it was so 😭. We saw everything beside the animals. Majority of them were either in their dens or not even there at all. The walk there was so long and nice in the cold morning. The lions tho, they were majestic and they were just vibing while slow blinking at you. I recommend going here AND they have red pandas!

We took a family trip to the San Francisco Zoo. It's much more convenient to drive than to take public transportation- it's pretty far from the city. We ate lunch before going to the zoo, so we arrived there after noon. We were able to get right in with no line. The zoo is medium-sized and is in the process of creating newer exhibits for its animals. The giraffe enclosure is like an African savanna, with room for the animals to roam. There's a great playground for kids and lots of hands-on stuff to do. There's also a train that runs a very short route through the back part of the zoo. Our engineer took us around 3 times. There are multiple places to get food and drink located throughout. It's a fun way to spend a day, and on the way back, we took the coast highway with great views of the ocean.

Wow! I haven't been here since a child until yesterday! This zoo is reasonably priced, and if an EBT cardholder offers discount tickets of only $3.00 per person! What a steal! Parking is only $11.00 during the weekdays and only $13.00 on the weekends. There are a few eateries within the zoo, but you are also allowed to bring your own food and beverages in. Keep in mind that no glass bottles or alcohol are allowed in, however the serve alcohol at the eateries. They have a huge carousel to ride that does cost, but just a few bucks. Also, a train that takes you around the zoo that is pretty neat, again, for a small extra fee. They have a great, clean picnic area too for those who are bringing their own food in. Restrooms located throughout.. It features a huge playground for those rambunctious kiddos! The zoo seems to be well kept, and the animals seem to be well taken care of. The staff is very nice and there are lots of animals to see!

No entrance fee or wait with annual membership. It is so much fun to come visit the zoo! I love to see the leaping lemurs climbing trees, how they getting around in the treetops and side walking.

Great way to spend time with your kids. They have a lot of animals at this zoo. The park is always very clean and so are the animal exhibits. The staff is very nice and helpful. Be prepared to do a lot of walking because the park is pretty big. They had a good variety of food and we all enjoyed our meals. It has playgrounds for the kids to enjoy and a carousel.

The SF zoo is on the pricey side. However, it is a great place to visit with many animals and the park is large! In addition to the animals, the train and the playground are highlights that the kids love!! We were sad that the elephants were gone, but most of the other animals were still there! Oh, they now have a red panda and a 17 ft. anaconda!!

Went last week for their monthly FREE day! Wow, this place was amazing! I think I was having more fun than the kids. My toddler loved the art rooms where she could paint on the walls and do other arts and crafts. This place is perfect for any child, any age. Very educational and SO MUCH FUN!

Absolutely beautiful zoo and park. INTENSE procedures with covid to get in and all indoor enclosures are closed. But once you get in, good experience, great animals. Nice staff. Masks were required but once you get in, you can pull them down and pull them back up when near others.

Great time No wait time Went with the family Kids friendly Great animals Best is the tiger The San Francisco Zoo is a 100-acre (40 ha) zoo located in the southwestern corner of San Francisco, California, between Lake Merced and the Pacific Ocean along the Great Highway. As of 2016, the zoo housed more than one thousand individual animals, representing more than 250 species. It is noted as the birthplace of Koko the gorilla, and, since 1974, the home of Elly, the oldest black rhinoceros in North America.

The zoo was nice though smaller than I would expect especially from San Francisco. It was a nice 2 hours spent with a relative though because of Covid19 not all things were open plus there were some places confined with to many people we didn't go in. They did have an open playground for kids and statues of the zoo animals through the park. There's also a kiddie train ride inside (extra $) I think more can be done if they wanted- there was empty spaces throughout the zoo, expand their "gardens". Bathrooms I did used were clean, same for the park. Price to the med-sized zoo was $25 which wasn't to bad since our visit was spur of the moment. Wasn't really crazy about the food options inside due to diet restrictions plus I eat small portions. They definitely need a more bigger parking lot.

A good number of interactive learning exhibits at the SF Zoo. The staff at the entrance, food stalls, restaurants are helpful. Great for children from ages 3 to the early teens. Great close up viewing of different animals here. They have added the "Garden" to the SF Zoo, and it is a very nice enhancement for a casual stroll through the expansive grounds. The food and snacks at the Lemur Cafe are about 4 times as expensive, so pack plenty of water and snacks for the kids if you are on a budget. Highly recommended is the $7 per person steam train ride. As of Aug 2021, the petting zoo is closed due to Covid 19 concerns.

Wow!!! Such an interesting and inviting place. Happy, healthy critters. Enchanting exhibits and pathways made to beckon you to explore. Critter habitats were very nice and the inmates seemed happy in them. Interesting placards about each exhibit and the diversity of wildlife is awesome. Really enjoyed visiting the SF Zoo !!!

Beautiful zoo, lots of interesting animals and exhibits. While we were here lots of closed exhibits and areas that are being improved or reworked. Once work is completed I'm sure this will be a five star zoo. Very reasonable price too given the size.

If you buy a city pass, don’t wait in the ticket window area, you can bypass that and they’ll scan your ticket inside. The signs weren’t clear so we waited for like 15 mins in a very long line. Overall, we had a nice time. Allow for about 2-3 hours depending on how fast or slow you walk. This is a smaller zoo with smaller exhibits. I think I enjoyed the gardens more than the animal exhibits! I would have loved to grab a beer but I couldn’t bring myself to pay $13 for one. I’m glad we visited and if you have time and have small kids definitely go, but if I had a tight timeline then I may have passed on it.

It’s $25 a ticket for adults plus the $10 parking fee. Parking was easy with lots of close spots. I went right at opening on a Thursday and there was no wait. People who have the year round passes get to go in a half hour early. They don’t give out maps anymore you have to use the widely spaced signs or take a picture of one. Lots and lots of animals to look at. They even have a bug room with lots of little critters to check out. The penguin enclosure was fun. You got to watch them swim around and play in water. The poor koala’s were kept in these small glass cages separated from each other. They weren’t even in an actual enclosure. They looked depressed. All the machines that you push the button to learn about the animal were broken. The ones at the koala cage was making an awful reacting squeal noise. The others just had the buttons ripped off so you couldn’t use them. Very disappointing.

Beautiful zoo with lots of animals to see. A lot of great photo perfect spots. Lots of parking on site ($13) and on street (free). Animals looked well taken care of. Lots of fun things to do with kids. Big playground available for kids and toddlers. One thing they desperately need, A COFFEE STATION. They have 2 cafes, but they should open up a starbucks on site.

I really like that there are free days designated for residents. I recently went to the zoo. I really like the lemurs and there was a new animal, fossa that I enjoyed seeing. My favorite is the red pandas. Recently there have been new updates/renovations. Unfortunately, there seemed to be a lot of animals missing. I think they were being moved around. It's not a big zoo, but it has interesting animals to see. They have a paid parking lot, but it's very easy to park outside.

Went to the zoo during Covid-19 in September and it was really nice. The zoo limits the number of people who can come to the zoo through their reservation system online and the entrance fee is not expensive at all. There is only one cafe and a stand that sells food so either pack a lunch for your family or eat before going to the zoo. Any part of the zoo that is enclosed is closed. The animals seem to love it since it's very quiet. We enjoyed it and spent about 2 1/2 hrs there. Plenty of areas with sanitizer stations.

Niabi zoo located close to quad city airport. The entry ticket for adult is $9 and the car parking ticket is $3. Note: they are not accepting amex card right now. Go go with cash or use alternate one if you have. The exit is close to the entry not the same gate. It’s clean and well maintained. They have small train which round the zoo. Giraffe feeding was closed. We missed it. I expected that lion can be seen with a glass between you. But it was in a area with fence. So you won’t get close shot. Food court is inside.Gift shop available close to the exit. Don’t miss to see the camel at the exit.

This place is awesome. My daughter had a blast riding the train and feeding the animals. The 3 hour time blocks for families during the pandemic was such a smart idea. We got done with all of it just in time and we didn't have to worry about crowds or long lines for any events. My family is gonna be going here a lot in the future

With Covid, online reservations are now required. You can either print your tickets or have them scan your ticket on your phone. Bathroom conveniently located by entrance, also another one located within the main zoo. My favorite part was the koala krossing area 🐨🐨 They had two adorably, fuzzy, sweet koalas in their glass enclosures sleeping comfortably on trees. There were also many birds, monkeys, hippo, rhino, tiger, lions etc.. Location maps were available periodically throughout the park. The benches were roped off, but you could still find areas to sit and relax. There was also a restaurant w/plenty of outdoor seating. And of course, a well stocked souvenir shop was located on way out by exit. Had a great time!

The person taking our tickets at the gate Kevin it was extremely friendly and can see that right off the bat the zoo was going to be fun the way he interacted with all the kids. Although a lot of the exhibits were closed, and the majority of the animals were sleeping and their dens, we had a great time especially around the hippopotamus and the lemurs. I would highly recommend for small children on up to grown up children of all ages.

Every year I would take my kids to the San Francisco Zoo on New Years Day! We felt this was the best way to start a new year! In 2019, my kids moved out of state and I became an empty nester. Last week my oldest daughter came to visit and we wanted to come back to the Zoo. It sure has changed since our last visit and most not for the better. I'm still going to give this Zoo five stars because I know there fill potential and feel most of the negative changes are due to the pandemic and beyond their control. There were a lot of our favorite animals we were still able to see and many that are no longer there with no explanation to where they went. The Hippo, Jillian the Sumatran Tiger, and several of the water exhibits were drained and empty. Maybe due to the drought but where did they go? Were they relocated? They also had many of the paths closed off making navigation tiresome. The animals we were still happy to see were the Meerkats, Lemurs, Black Bears, Pelicans, Giraffes, Leanne the Sumatran Tiger and more. Even though the Zoo isn't thriving like it was before the pandemic, please show your support by visiting the Zoo. They really do a lot towards preservation of many species that are at risk of extinction and education. Parking tip: We always park on Sloat that provides tons of parking. The earlier you get there, the closer you'll get to the zoo. After the Zoo closes: Catch the sunset (on a clear day) across the street at Ocean Beach. It's a short little walk from the zoo to the beach. Another benefit to parking on Sloat.

One of my favorite zoos to frequent but alot of the animals weren't available to view due to COVID. The middle Section where all the different monkeys are was completely closed, no Hippo they had transferred it to Cincinnati for breeding, the cat hall was closed, and one of my all time favorites the giant rhino had passed. It was pretty busy with families and friends which was nice but mask mandated throughout. I feel there should have been at least a 10% discount offered due to the closures throughout the park.

The zoo is presently in transition with large areas under construction for new exhibits. The zoo is quite different from the zoo I started visiting nearly 40 years ago. There are far less animals and the ones that are here have far better places to live than they had in the past.

My family and I came here on a weekday around 2pm and there was no crowd. We took our time walking around to the different areas. The weather made it so nice and comfortable to walk around the whole zoo. My kids loved the playground area. All the animals were out and about so we got to see everything we wanted to see. It was a great day at the SF zoo and we would definitely come back again.

We went to the SF zoo for Memorial Day weekend. The ticket prices were around 150 for our family of 5. I purchased the unlimited year long membership for $30 more. My kids love the zoo so I figured this was well worth it. The parking lot was full. The parking would have cost us $13, but we found a free space along the beach across the street. We had our tickets in advance so we skipped the huge line. The last time we came here the food was mediocre and expensive. We brought a backpack with our lunches and plenty of water. The animals were really active this particular day and we really enjoyed the enormous playground just before we left. This zoo is smaller compared to others, however, there was plenty to see. My feet were tired nonetheless, and we made some great memories. We will definetely be back.

Beautiful! Two 6-yr olds LOVED it! Their mom said better than LA zoo! Sad that there were no more elephants; also waiting for refurbished Big Cat enclosure(s). A little confusing as to the map - they need to make the paths color-coded with LOTS more painted arrows and have some walking guide helpers on staff. Folks: our zoos are very important! Donate often - and help secure the legacy for generations to come!

I wanted to like this place. I'm a local and have not been here for years. Overall the place is run down and a bit disheveled. Old zoo 'ruins' still stand but have never been incorporated into the newer design. This is disappointing. The newer design gives more room for most animals to roam, when the old zoo seemed more 'pen-like' as in smaller spaces. Probably half of the animals were either out of town, or roaming the great highway. So the kids were a bit disappointed. The giraffes put on a good show, and the gorillas were interesting to watch. We road the carousel which was fun. Haven't done that in a long time. They keep it in pretty good condition. An ok food court with a pretty good variety, albeit limited, of food types that I remember. Burgers, lasagna, fries, corn dogs, korean bbq. Amusingly, you can get beer and wine, among other drinks, at the children's play area, but it did not appear to be available in the food court. 🤔 I had a Conspiracy IPA. Once you get beyond the explosive carbonation, it was ok. I wouldn't have another. Overall my wife and I were disappointed. We agreed the Oakland zoo might be a better time for all.

My family and I really like this zoo. My kids absolutely love the humongous playground area. We are looking forward to one day being able to take the kids there again.

A beautiful zoo. They're doing a great job with the mask and social distancing requirements.

Great zoo to visit even though a lot of the attractions were closed due to Covid.

A true wildlife oasis in the middle of San Francisco. From penguins to giraffes to koala bears to Komodo dragons, the San Fransisco Zoo has it all. And it's just a short ride away from downtown SF on the Muni. The zoo has reopened since Covid shelter in place and they're doing a great job ensuring everyone's safety. Everyone needs to wear a mask and observe social distancing while inside the park. Purell hand sanitizer stations can be found everywhere throughout the grounds. Only outdoor exhibits are open. All indoor experiences like the rainforest and insect zoo are closed due to the pandemic. To visit, you need to book tickets online in attendance. Pro tip: SF residents get a discounted rate!

Worth a visit. Go early when it opens as it closes at 4 pm. Good parking. Has well divided sections. Good collection of animals. Nice playground, Tran and cafeteria. Only negative side is that they closed it at 4 pm. Should keep it open till 5 on Saturdays. We spent 4.5 hours and could not visit petting zoo.

  • 3/5 Sherry N. 4 years ago on Google
There is not much space for parking. They are only open until 4pm every day, which does not give a lot of time for exploring. But the exhibits they do have are nice to see. Love the giraffes and rest of animals.

LOVE the SF Zoo!! They have wonderful animal exhibits and great Fall and Holiday decorations for the kids. The Hay Maze in October and November is AMAZING! Their parking is a bit high ($11), but you can park for free on Sloat, just around the corner. They also have a wonderful historic carousel and real steam engine train! Wonderful!

A good deal of the park was closed due to "wind conditions", and then the whole park was closed an hour earlier than expected due to the same reason. It was Oscars night and people wanted to get out. SF Zoo is not a very windy place. Still fun to take a 4yo there. You can sit back--to-back with the chimps against the glass; pretty cool.

  • 5/5 Tia P. 4 years ago on Google
We have spent 10 days there last year and always explored something new. The annual membership is super affordable. The new chimpanzees house is amazing. We low the rhinoceros and the anteater and the wolves and bears and giraffes and pandas and basically everything. Also, the playground is my kids (5&7) all-time favorite and we always have to spend at least 45 minutes there. JUST PARKING is expensive...

Nice work on reopening safely! However, it feels mostly like a park with dining options since just few exhibits are open. No feedings, no educational programs, no train.

Strategies for reminding people to social distance and not to touch things - were good - caution tape wound around railings, etc. Some construction. Many signs are faded. Unclear why some older exhibits have been left to be over grown. Must get tix in advance on website.

I went during this COVID19 thing so it may not have been at it's full glory but it was still interesting enough. One of the things I enjoyed was spotting the peacocks that they have roaming freely in the zoo.

We had a great day. Weather was a little chilly, just need a sweater. Everyone followed the rules, wearing their masks and keeping their distance. We had pizza for lunch at a dining area. The food was good and the staff disinfectant the tables after each use. We were able to see a lot of animals. The hippo was even putting on a show, swimming around and blowing water.?

I have been coming here for years and it I always said that is was great all the time. But last time I was there today and I got violated for not wearing a thing to cover my face and nearly got kicked out. I felt like I never had rights. I never even knew I had To wear a mask So I won' t be coming back for a while now, unless if they removed the rules of masks. I want to come every now and then cos I like it. But if some employes Will stop me for masks. I might never come back here at all or go To the oakland zoo for a change

Sf zoo is a place worth to spend a day every once awhile work a family especially you have kids. At this time during pandemic, admission is limited so that the park has less people. Because of less people in the park, I feel very relax walking around slowly in a warm sunny day. I have been there many times before but this is the one I enjoy the most.

  • 5/5 Adriana V. 3 years ago on Google

Went for my daughter's 5th birthday. Had a lot of fun but I wish the inside attractions were open. They should be allowed as long as anyone is wearing a mask. We went to the indoor aquarium at fisherman's wharf no problem the day before.

Really nice zoo. Pros: Operates at 50% capacity to protect their visitors. Love how close we can get to the Hippo and bears. The koalas are super adorable. Cons: Lotsa of enclosures are closed. Full price despite the above closure.

Came here with my Fiancé on a spontaneous trip. Tickets and Parking were very reasonably priced. The park may have mostly been closed and slow because of Covid and the time I arrived but we enjoyed ourselves non the less and loved seeing all the animals they had. I would love to come again when they’re done with some construction and when Covid is more under control.

If they got 3 Deinonychus kin a mixed species exhibit, with Stan the t. rex clone. there is ponds at both side and feeders on both sides that bought goats up for of the enclosure, so the Deinonychus and t. rex can live their own sides. That's how mixed species enclosures work.

I went to this place. I went there with my family to show my little ones a little of bit of what the nature that have that is the awesome animal the compose the beautiful of the name nature. But I got the surprise the zoo was charging high charge to in alright I paid because I want to see this creature, which was my surprise the zoo doesn't have a lot of the animal they supposed to have in there. I feel in my opinion the zoo shouldn't charge the high price if they don't all the animal in there for the kids can see the animal, because we went there more for our kids for they learn more about animal and they can see in real life.

Wow... what a hidden gem. I think I would go here rather than the SF Zoo any day of the week! You get right up close with the animals, they have an incredible assortment of really cool animals, and it's no more than a 300 foot walk around the entire property. Awesome! My kids loved it, and it wasn't a huge excursion where they're ready to melt down by the end! Prices are great as well.

I love the Niabi Zoo! It's just small enough that my son can walk around and not be too sore or tired but big enough to have a large assortment of animals that you don't normally get to see around Iowa/Illinois unless you go to a much larger zoo. The prices are reasonable and it makes for a great day trip.

  • 5/5 Kai S. 3 years ago on Google

Maybe I'm not remembering correctly, but the upkeep of the zoo seems to have deteriorated drastically since I was last here in 2012. I am sorry to see signs that claim that all the weeds are some sign of environmental wokeness to attract pollinators, etc. "No-mow zones" are one thing, weeds everywhere (including poison ivy and other obnoxious weeds) are something else entirely. Not impressive. The train was broken down. They did offer us a refund for our prepaid train tickets. Still a net negative. I did appreciate the fairly gentle enforcement of the mask mandate. Feeding the koi was a real highlight! Feeding the giraffes was nice, but with safety precautions, it was too long a wait for young kids. All indoor facilities were closed, including my personal favorite, the reptile building. Understandable, but not cool nonetheless. The animals seemed well cared for, and they have a nice variety of animals, especially large cats. We timed it well to see the big cats eating, which was fun to watch. The amur leopard is so rare that it's really cool to see one. It's beautiful. The kids really enjoyed the carousel. That was another highlight. Overall, the zoo needs better tending. They almost made three stars, but not with how unkempt it is.

Great little zoo for young kids as you can do the whole zoo in a few hours. They also have a carousel, giraffe feeding, bird and fish feeding, petting zoo, playground, and a train that takes you around the zoo which my kids LOVE! The prices are great, we go every year!

Unfortunately, we went when it was raining (and then pouring) so a lot of animals weren't out, but a worker said they don't force them to stay out which I appreciate. 4 stars because there was no food available and we didn't eat beforehand (which was our fault).

Worst experience drove 6 hours and spent $130.00. Not hardly a animal to be seen!!!!! Talk about a RIPOFF!!!!!! would NEVER RECCOMEND THIS PLACE!!!! SHOULD POST NOT ALL ANIMAL CAN BE SEEN. Said no tickets available for train but it was continued to run. No where on the website nor was it posted anywhere nor were you told that half of their attractions and exhibits were closed it would have been a little different if they would have said or let you know before you wasted money on tickets. This is a sneaky way of basically selling a lemon to you basically theft .

This is a fun little zoo with several species I've never seen before. The submission and activity pricing was reasonable. I just hate the COVID restrictions had some areas closed. I'd definitely recommend stopping by if you're close.

I'm very excited that the San Francisco Zoo is back open during the end of quarantine. They've done a great job making sure it's effortless knowing how to maintain social distance with their painted social distancing bubbles that each exhibit. It's a fantastic trip for everyone.

  • 3/5 Saharah F. 3 years ago on Google
Due to covid there are less attractions, No interactions & longer lines for the train. The upside is that it was nice to get outdoors & there was plenty of space to social distance, the zoo is a beautiful place. Street Parking was easy & ample, also option to pay & park inside zoo parking lot. Be prepared for FOG.

  • 4/5 Cemal K. 3 years ago on Google
It was a nice surprise that the Zoo was open during COVID-19. Indoor exhibitions and areas where people would gather were closed like playground and picnic areas which was well thought. The San Francisco Zoo is not as big as San Diego Zoo or other bigger ones but still has a lot to see.

Pretty big zoo so bring comfortable walking shoes! Social distancing and arrows that allow for one way traffic throughout the park. Some exhibits are closed due to covid or updating habitats. Really nice zoo to visit although with current Covid-19 restrictions there isn't much to do outside of viewing the animals. The silverback gorilla there looks really depressed, he sat there almost as still as a statue with an expressionless look on his face past the 15 minutes I observed him. That was one thing about my visit there that really stuck with me and I'm not a huge animal rights activist or anything. But his sadness/boredom was painfully evident and very tangible.

May be due to inadequate staffing, but seems poorly maintained. And way too much glass in place. Makes it difficult to observe the animals due the the glare. The zookeeper that were there were quite friendly and knowledgeable. Thank you!

All the animals are taken good care of and live in good environments. Gorrilas seem sad, though.

Just last min decided to take the girls on a lil adventure in the zoo... didnt know we had to reserve, but instead of just being turned away the awsome guard checked with dispatch if there were able to take in walk ins and after they check we were allowed. Thanks to that guy and his extra effort (wish we took his name) my girls had a great adventure seeing the animals in the zoo. God knows they needed to be out after mostly being home since the pandemic. Kudos SF Zoo!!!

Despite the freezing weather it was a great day. I want the zoo to put in credit card style ticket machines at the exits. Since they don't, be sure to buy your exit ticket from the main entrance so you can leave easily. Zoo was clean. Lines for the Puffer train were long, bears were denning, but we got to see all the rest of the animals. Line for gift shop wasn't awful.. Kids had a great time.

Just mehhh.. at this time of the year. Many expos are shut down, construction everywhere, most animals look sad and not happy being there. Quite expensive to get in and... everyone over 2yo is paying!!!.. common now.. how about raising that to 3 yo , at least..?!!

  • 5/5 Eli B. 2 years ago on Google
Second time being here. Excellent zoo! Kids will have a blast. Decent food located through the park. Highly recommended. Side note: Pay for and Use Valet parking if you don't want to park 1/2mile away on the street.

A great place to bring the kids to see some beautiful animals. We really loved the reptile & insect section, we learned so many interesting facts. The giraffes will always be my favorite ❤️ definitely one of our go to places for a day of walking around & letting the kids meet new friends on the paths & playground .

  • 4/5 Dan M. 2 years ago on Google
Pretty good zoo, a little light on animals but those there seem pretty well kept and happy. I'm very happy they survived the pandemic. Didn't see a lot of pacing or cage behavior. The bears are the best, they have a black pair from Alaska with really good, shiny and sleek fur. No foxes, and they haven't had a polar bear for a while :( Also absent were the seals and sea lions - hopefully they'll be back, and expansions like with the snow leopard are encouraging.

Awesome! SF residents get a discount with ID. People eligible for SNAP/EBT can get in for the low, low price of $3! The Leaping Lemur is the only restaurant that is serving food due to COVID19... but the selection of food is pretty good (burgers, orange chicken, pizza, and more). Over priced snacks and drinks... bring your own plus a water bottle. There's lots of places to fill it up. Bathrooms are spread throughout the zoo and are clean. Well worth the trip. AWESOME!!!

  • 4/5 Adi Mallikarjuna V. 2 years ago on Google

It was a nice way to spend the day. I mean it’s a zoo & I feel like they all pretty much have the same animals. I’m a VA resident and not much different from the one back home. If you want something to do to kill time I recommend.

  • 5/5 Stephany O. 2 years ago on Google
The exhibits are positioned so you can see a lot of the animals well and pretty close. The red pandas and kangaroos are adorable

Well let's start with mask rule. The employees will let you know to wear mask. But no one follows the rules. So many people not caring. Paying for parking when yet it was open on the exit. And wasted 13 bucks. And everything out of date. Nice try. Oakland zoo wins.

Always fun to take the little ones to the SF Zoo. Some of the enclosures seem a little small though. I definitely remember it being bigger and grander but life through the eyes of a child are always different.

Beautiful Zoo. Navigation could be better. Was a little confusong to walk. Animals were amazing. Clean zoo. Good parking facility. Need to book tickets online and visit during the designated time. Pizza place available. Restrooms could be clean Train ride was awesome and fun.. Best experience for kids.

The staff at the gate were Friendly and informative. The park was clean. The animals looked healthy. There were a few exhibits that were closed and under construction but it didn't take away from the experience.

Loved it! Wasn't sure there'd be many animals out due to the rain, but most of them were! Was nice and quiet too. We had a good time.

Everything is a bit on the pricey side, bit maybe that is just the inflation that I am feeling. The animals looked healthy, but bored. Things looked clean and tidy. There are three different eateries with different menus, so consider where to eat if you are planning on eating there.

SF Zoo is a quiet gem. Since fixing it up several years ago, it is a great fun time with kids. The play park for kids is awesome also.

Absolutely worth it. Went later afternoon (2pm) and wish I would’ve gone earlier to see more at a slower pace. Missed a few things (some exhibits close at 4pm). But beautiful campus with well looked after animals and intelligent staff. Can’t wait to go back.

A lovely zoo with some interesting animals. Our favorite part was the lemur habit. Surprisingly there are no elephants. The hamburgers were very tasty. Entry is $25 per person plus parking ($11-$13).

  • 4/5 Steve R. 1 year ago on Google
We visited in a Tuesday morning and found this zoo to be delightful. Our great-niece was the one who really loved it, though, and she spent a lot of time gazing rapturously at the penguins, the flamingoes, and the giraffes... among others. Lunch was outrageously expensive, but for a good cause, so we didn't mind too much. Luckily, it was lunchtime fro many of the animals, too, so we were able to watch them becoming a bit more active as mealtime arrived. The penguins in particular were a joy to behold.

  • 4/5 Josh H. 1 year ago on Google
Great experience as usual, quick to enter and beautiful weather. Only gripes would be that a couple exhibits were closed and the food situation could use more choices and stalls. Otherwise I really enjoyed the experience, spent about 3 hours here and could have spent another hour or 2 pretty easily.

  • 5/5 Kira J. 1 year ago on Google
Great zoo. It takes about 3 hours to see everything. It's not the same caliber as San Diego, but we had a great time. The Lemur exhibit was awesome. Right now the elevated walkways are all closed for construction except the one by the lemurs which you enter next to the Lemur Cafe.

  • 5/5 Cristal M. 1 year ago on Google
Nice zoo. I went on a weekday but was still surprised at how empty it was. I expected more crowds and tourist but there was hardly anyone there. The only downside is that since it was so vacant, none of the cafes or food stands were open. However, I rather have plenty of breathing/walking room than have to fight against a crowd so I enjoyed it.

  • 4/5 Allylicc 10 months ago on Google
The zoo is not so bad but can be better..I think most of the animals are lonely as some were just one. I was eager to see the lion but he was sleeping throughout..This makes me wonder why they say the lion is the king of the jungle when all it does is sleep during the Dat. Overall, not a bad experience..the gorillas made it fun with their dramatic attitudes.

This is our favorite zoo in the Bay Area. We’ve had a membership for over 6 years and go 1-2x a month. My kids love the huge park, train, kids zoo, hippo and giraffes. They have really good pretzels and Mac and cheese at the food court. I love the gorillas and big cats. Park on Sloat for free parking. The weather is great- it’s near the beach and beautiful grounds. I also like that it’s flat and easy for walk for all levels.

  • 3/5 Heather S. 9 months ago on Google
I used to love it here. Sadly, the upkeep has hit the rocks. The area near the lemurs/monkeys has been under construction FOREVER and I do mean FOREVER. Like years. Also, I know it’s a zoo, but there were multiple areas where the stench of animal urine was unbearable. The big cats were difficult to view due to the enclosure being scratched and worn out. I am so sad that the zoo hasn’t been maintained properly, it used to be one of my favorite places to visit when we would come to the Bay Area.

  • 4/5 Funny Beagle J. 9 months ago on Google
The park is really big and there are a lot of things to do for kids and adults of all ages. The big cats’ enclosure was closed for an upgrade, which was kinda sad because it was the thing I wanted to see the most. The penguins and the gorillas were fun, and we even got to see how they walked a cheetah back to its enclosure, which was something I’ve never seen before!

Long ques on weekend. Usually very busy on weekend. Big spacious areas for animals. Rest rooms are at many places. Eat in cafe are also available. Indoor koalas were alone and lonely. There was one big rhino without partner and was looking sad: one star down for that. Over all great value of money.

  • 2/5 Aron G. 9 months ago on Google
This zoo has potential. There were many too empty exhibits. The place looked abandoned and forgotten in certain areas. The layout is terrible. You have to walk a long way to see the next empty exhibit. The giant rhinoceros was one of the best things to see here.

  • 4/5 Hillary S. 9 months ago on Google
Nice small zoo but lots of things were closed for construction. Beautiful weather and location but a bit confusing to find the entrance due to Google maps taking us behind it and the construction surrounding. They had cool bear exhibits, snow leopard, gorillas, red panda, koalas, and a bug exhibit my kids enjoyed. The penguin exhibit was their best one by far. When we went, lots of animals were not visible unfortunately. And it's worth noting- zoo closes at 5 but they start closing things off at 4 and the playground gets closed off at like 430. It's hard to figure out where to pay for parking if you've bought tickets online in advance and you need to show it to get out (you can buy from the membership office which closes early and the ticket counter). Great gift shop at the entrance. Limited food options with high prices like $15/slice of pizza and long lines. Definitely recommend bringing your own food with you. Lots of bathrooms but they're not the cleanest. They had maps posted everywhere which made it more easy to find your way.

We hadn't been to the SF Zoo in several years and we were kind of disappointed on this most recent visit. The zoo grounds looked overgrown and just not kept well. A lot of things were closed, and quite a few of the exhibits weren't open. It was definitely not worth the $50 we paid to get in. We tried to do the nature walk because there were signs up that it was open but when we got to the entrance it was completely blocked off and looked like it had been that way for awhile. Maybe they're understaffed like a lot of places. Whatever the reason, it was really sad to see how much it had changed with our last visit.

  • 5/5 Tyler G. 6 months ago on Google
The zoo is located next to the ocean. I walked through the zoo in about 2 hours. I recommend going in the early morning. The animals are more active and I saw a lot. The Penguin Island also let's you get close to the penguins. Overall, the zoo was pretty quiet and a nice place to relax and see animals.

  • 5/5 Gianna S. 6 months ago on Google
Wish we could have seen the cats, but it was warm and in the late morning. It was a blast to see all the animals, reptiles, and insects. The red panda was my favorite. We got to watch it play in the water and was so fun.

  • 5/5 Ngoc Bich H. 5 months ago on Google
Great place for a family trip and cheap tickets if you have a ebt card. Sometimes the animals likes hiding and bit hard to take pictures. Took about 3-5 hours to complete this whole zoo

Well organised zoo, kids will enjoy, be prepared to walk more if you have kids bring strollers, penguin island is the best thing, rhinoceros is very big, big play area for kids, there are 3 restaurants and train ride… my favourite here is penguin island, rhinoceros, jaguar and anaconda… hope you enjoy here…

SF Zoo exceeded expectations! The cleanliness and friendliness stood out, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Navigating was a breeze, and the must-try train ride added an extra layer of excitement. With an abundance of diverse animals, it's a perfect attraction for kids. A top-notch experience that combines education and fun!
