(Edit below) Beware of this hotel - upon arrival I entered the bathroom and immediately noticed the counters were covered in fingerprints, dirt, and grime. I then noticed the floors were also not swept or mopped at all, I could see peoples footprints all over the tile. As a professional house cleaner, I know how incredibly unacceptable and disgusting the condition of the room was. Furthermore I went to grab a glass to make a drink and every single of of them was dirty. I did go to the front desk to let them know about the issues and all they offered was for house cleaning to come in and do another wipe down which clearly we were not interested in due to the poor job they did the first time. Last but not least, after checking out they charged us $300 because they couldn’t “find” the bathrobes, mind you we only ever took one off the hanger and we left it right on the bed when we left. The second robe was never taken off the hanger in the closet but apparently they couldn’t find either robe, that is until we called and then they magically found both of them and said the charge would be lifted in about 7-10 days. Horrible customer service, I do NOT recommend this hotel. Edit - Patrick the manager reached out and was so incredibly apologetic for our experience and offered a refund for our stay there. I also want to add that he was very genuine in his apology and agreed that our experience is not something they are proud of and will ensure the remainder of the staff holds the same standards as he has for the hotel. I am not sure we will stay here again, but I would most definitely consider it just because of how lovely Patrick was. My one star review turned to 4 thanks to him!

A great stay in San Francisco. This hotel is wonderful. We stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed ourselves. Once you walk in the doors you will not want to leave. The living room (lobby) is decorated with beautiful and unique pieces. The entire team at the front desk is helpful and knowledgeable about the city. The GM Emily is great. Our room was spotless and very comfortable. Don’t forget to head downstairs at 5pm for social hour every night with free wine and beer. Then in the morning grab a complimentary coffee. I would highly recommend a stay here.

We stayed at the Alton Hotel for two nights. It was the start of a three week round trip through the west coast. The hotel‘s location is fantastic. Fisherman’s wharf, Pier 39 etc. are just a short walk away. Rental car location AVIS and Hertz are just 200 meters/0.1miles away, it’s right around the corner, so it was easy for us. The room was nice and had a turntable with some records available. AC was a bit loud but that’s just a minor thing, vending machine is in the basement and has regular hotel minibar pricing. Breakfast was fantastic!! Staff was really friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again.

Our stay here was perfect! It was our first time in San Francisco for a family trip. The location for families is amazing, and it's very easy to get around the city from here. The hotel staff was so welcoming and friendly, the lobby had it's signature "Kimpton" vibe and design, and the happy hour is always enjoyed! Our room was fresh and clean, with all the necessary amenities. Valet was easy to use, and staff was accommodating when we had to leave our bags. We would stay here again if we ever visit again!

We were very happy with this great hotel. The room was nice with a view of Alcatraz. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The affiliated restaurant was very good. Worth noting that the menu is different on weekends. We didn’t face delays noted in other reviews. The convenience to Fisherman’s wharf and the street car right outside was wonderful. Highly recommend!!!!

I didn’t want to say goodbye to this hotel. It was by far the cleanest room I’ve ever stayed in. The carpet felt brand new. I usually only wear socks in hotel rooms and I felt comfortable not here. The staff were very helpful with every request. There was a sign in the bathroom with everything they offered if you forgot (picture). I requested an extra blanket at night because I got cold and someone was up within 5 min. Don’t miss the happy hour hosted by the hotel from 5-6 with choices of red or white wine and beers.

This hotel is definitely very chic and modern. The people at the front desk were really nice, helpful, and friendly. Record players were in every room, and you could check out vinyl records at the front desk, which is super cool and fun!! We also enjoyed a free drink each during Happy Hour, from 5:00-6:00. However, the room was problematic. The beds were lopsided and uncomfortable. The pillows were all very squishy and low, with no high and firm pillow options. Our thermostat seemed to be having issues - our room got hotter and hotter as the night progressed, even though we didn’t set it at all. The location is amazing, since the hotel is next to lots of food and shopping places, and the amenities are fun, but we would not stay here again, as no one got a good rest.

I am a very regular travellers who is in hotels at least once per month. I would not recommend this hotel based on service, quality, amities and price. Rooms are large but as a two year old hotel, they are already in need of a repaint. There is a constant smell of drugs and the shower does not have wash away quickly, causing flooding. Beds are comfortable and room is serviced daily. The biggest disappointment about this hotel is the facilities. You are charged a ridiculous guest amenity fee for nothing. There is no bar, you have to sit in the lobby. No room service or mini bar. Also the inclusion of breakfast is your rate is not accurate. I had breakfast included in rate but was given a $25 voucher for the day. This was not enough to cover breakfast, as an example a coffee was around $5 and a breakfast with toast, eggs, and fruit was $23. Plus tax, you will go over this allowance daily. (This is an edit following the hotels reply. To confirm it was $25 a day, there were two guests in the room making a total of $50, $25 each. My point still stands and another example of hidden cost.) I am a member of this brand and had no perks, upgrades or late check out when requested. I am also a Hilton diamond member and will without doubt be returning to Hilton. I have never paid $280 for a late check out there (this was later negotiated to $150, still a ridiculous charge). Would not recommend.

Very nice room, walking distance to lots of attractions. Happy hour 5-6 free drink was a nice perk and $10 credit each night for snacks. We got adjoining rooms with family, so more room for kids to move about. Also, you can check out 3 albums per room and record players in each room, fun.

The service at this hotel was great and the location is pretty decent. However, the rooms themselves were pretty disappointing. The mini fridge was completely empty, in fact there were no water bottles in the room at all. Additionally, the hotel does not offer any room service. Other amenities which you’d expect in a typical hotel room, such as coffee maker, iron/iron board were also lacking. There are stations to fill a water bottle or ice bucket on the top two floors. It should also be noted that the hotel does not utilize a water softening system, which I found to be very surprising. In fact, I’ve never stayed at a hotel with such hard water. It caused our skin to become quite itchy and hair was difficult to clean. Overall, I would not recommend this hotel, nor would I stay here again.

Really enjoyed our stay here, but like every other hotel I've stayed in whenever I'm in the USA (I'm from Australia), why don't you have a microwave/kettle in every room? Happy hour was great each day. Not so sure about the record player in the room? No need for it. Resort fees to include that? Hmmmm Staff friendly and helpful. The Philippine restaurant (Abaca) was great, the food excellent but the pricing was a touch expensive.

What a great hotel fabulous location near Fisherman’s Wharf SF, all staff are lovely & pleasant, there is coffee or tea available in the mornings free of charge, free drinks (glass wine, API or fruit juice) between 5pm - 6pm, cold ice water throughout the day in reception. Our room was very clean, big & spacious the bed was so comfy and serviced everyday. There’s a small gift shop selling soft drinks & sweets. Lovely atmosphere around the hotel would recommend this hotel to you all.

The hotel is in a great location with easy access to a large portion of what San Francisco has to offer to tourists. The room was clean with a nice view and had an old school record player in it with which you could get records from the front desk. The staff was friendly and helpful and the hotel was well maintained. We did not eat at the restaurant on site however it was always crowded, especially in the evenings so it must be good. We would certainly consider staying here again for future visits to the city.

If you can get a room here for a reasonable price (typically by booking well in advance), do it! This is a swanky hotel that can be had for a great price with some patience. I stayed 4 nights in September when I visited SF for the first time. I spent very little time in the room. The location is great if you want to be close to Fisherman’s Wharf, but I decided it wasn’t for me and will probably stay closer to the city next time I visit. It was really nice to have a decent, clean room to return to after each day spent in a vibrant, interesting, and *very dirty* city. However, the shower was disappointing. Every time I used it, water pooled up in the bathroom due to the lack of a proper screen. Other than that, the room was excellent.

Great place for a night in San Francisco. Right on the ward and walking distance to plenty of places. The staff was very friendly at check-in. A holiday happy hour was available which had a great selection of beer, wine and cider. This pet friendly hotel allowed us to travel with my little guy. However, It was quiet disappointing to have found that staff entered our room while we grabbed coffee in the morning without our permission while our dog was in there. We had the "do not disturb" sign up and staff still proceeded. We brought this up to the staff but not much of an acknowledgement was made. I would just beware, if you have to leave your furry companion to grab a meal or coffee - staff will still enter!

We had a wonderful stay in this hotel Kimpton@alton. All the staff is very attentive and courteous specially Clifford the hotel concierge. He is awesome. Room service is on point you can requests anything from them, they clean the room everyday. They have a free flow of wine/cider and beer from 5-6 pm. And lastly, they are surprisingly affordable. Will definitely recommend this place to our family and friends.

Super attentive staff, great amenities, and excellent location. Rooms were very spacious with lovely decors. Room service always very prompt and spotless. The amenity items offered at the hotel were comprehensive and extremely useful when traveling for long periods. Staff were always happy to provide whatever you needed to make your stay lovely. The beds and pillows are very soft, depending on your preferences could be good or bad. Fresh coffee in the morning, evening drinks and nibbles made it a lovely atmosphere to depart in the morning and arrive home in the afternoon. The only downside is the hotel is always booked so if you are hoping for a upgrade as an IHG member you would be out of luck during high seasons.

This was a good hotel - but not outstanding, alas. Our First room was very highly fragranced - as In immediately triggering allergic spasms. Fortunately, they had another room available and were wiling to move us or else we would have had to find another place to sleep! The Record player in room was cool. Super retro and fun. “Standard” records in the room were not my jam but they said others were available for check out. The Bed was amazing!! And the Wine hour was a nice touch. Location was superb!!! This did not have the “fancy” boutique vibe like many other Kimpton I have visited but overall I would recommend. If you want super quirky, fancy, or luxurious, keep looking. But if you want solid, clean, nice, excellent location, this is a great place.
