After a night out, my girlfriend and I found ourself needing a hotel to stay for the night. After reading reviews and checking the availability/rates, we decided to take a quick ride over. The doors were locked when we arrived. When I called to ask about a room, a rude woman answered upset as if she was sleeping. When I apologized thinking I had called the wrong number, she assured me I had the right number and told me to leave and then hung up. A few minutes later as we waited for our Lyft to arrive, she called me up again to let us know she would be calling the police if we didn't get away from the sidewalk. Luckily our driver showed up a shortly after and was able to get us to another hotel in a safer area 🙏. It was such a bizarre and unusual experience!

UNACCEPTABLE. Very disappointed in my stay. BEWARE: THEY DO NOT HAVE ANYONE ON STAFF BETWEEN 5pm - 9am. Check-in is at 3pm so if you need anything (iron, cups, ice, towels, clean sheets, etc. you better be prepared to ask for it within the 2 hours staff is there to help). They do advertise an after hours line but they will not respond to situations that they deam “non-emergencies”. If you call for a status update, they conveniently do not pick up the phone. TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE which I’d expect at a low rank motel. This was unacceptable for the prices they charge. Our stay was the night before my brother’s wedding and instead of celebrating, we were running around San Francisco having to purchase basic amenities they advertised they had because bc the didn’t have staff onsite to open up the locked closet where everything was stored. I am a frequent traveler with realistic expectations and I have never written a poor review for a business. This experience was so infuriating and disappointing, I want others to be aware of the poor etiquette of the grove inn. Reply to the Grove Inn: - The owners may live on site but they are not accessible. I called the “after hours” phone number and the man who answered the phone said he was only taking calls but couldn’t answer any questions (odd). He told me to wait for someone else to call me back which they did the first time. It was then that I was told the closets were locked and no one would be able to help. When I pressed him on this explaining that at minimum we needed an iron for my brothers wedding, the man I spoke to on the phone said he’d make some phone calls to see if he could help. I never heard back from him and he wouldn’t pick up the phone when I tried to reach him (this was at 5:30pm so I wasn’t calling at unreasonable hours). - I made an update to my review above regarding check-in time. - Your prices are in line with hotels that offer 24 hour customer service. We had to purchase $80+ dollars worth of items that most hotels/inns offer (and you had this on site but it was all locked in a closet and no staff to help) - Your staff between the hours of 9-5 were nice. The issue is that there is no one to help outside of those hours and that is unacceptable. While I appreciate you responding to my review, I think you’ve lost sight of the main point. You are running a 24 hour business, not a 9-5. A hotel should have someone responsive and on site at all times. (And saying that the owner is there or access to an after hours number to help is a deceptive cop out)

We were in San Francisco for a couple of days for an event at Civic Center Plaza and wanted to find a place within walking distance. I'm so glad we came across The Grove Inn! On our check-in day, we arrived early. The room wasn't available yet, but we were able to store our bags and one of the Inn attendants gave us restaurant and coffee shop recommendations. We stayed in one of the upstairs rooms facing the street and it was very comfortable! The place has a unique "old house" feel to it, which was very cool. For breakfast, there was coffee, tea, orange juice, fresh bread from a local bakery, as well as other assorted breakfast items (cereal, oatmeal, etc.). Between the friendliness of the staff, the charm of the building, and the convenience of the location (walking distance to Alamo Square, many restaurants, and Civic Center Plaza), this is undoubtedly a place to which I'll be returning.

Staying at the Grove Inn was an unexpected delight. Check in was incredibly easy, the rooms were updated, clean, quiet and perfect for our 2 night stay. The few staff we interacted with were very friendly and the complimentary snacks in our room were a nice touch!

Comfortable, quaint stay in a great location. My only complaint is that the walls are very thin, so we could hear everything going on in the room above us (super loud footsteps). Try asking for an upstairs room so you don’t have this issue!

Had such a great stay here. Love the location right behind the Painted Ladies. Check-in/out was contactless due to Covid, but the communication and instructions was great. Loved the room, clean and spacious. I will be coming back to stay here.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights with our two college age sons. We first had a regular room with two double beds. It was my mistake to book this room as a double bed is too small for grown boys to share. The room was small to medium sized with a nice bay window. The bathroom was the smallest bathroom I have ever seen in a hotel with no counter space next to the sink to lay toiletries. The shower was tiny and I hard time moving in it (I weigh 110 lbs). One huge plus was that the hotel upgraded us at no extra cost to a suite with 2 queen beds and a larger bathroom our last night and we were very grateful. The hotel itself is quaint and in a great location just one block away from Alamo Square Park where you can get a wonderful view of the city and two blocks away from good coffee and dining choices on Divisidero St. It’s also just a few block up from the Hayes Valley shopping area and green spaces and other great dining choices.

Great, affordable place to crash for a couple of nights in SF. The room was large, neat, and well-appointed with everything we needed. Checking in and out was a breeze. The location was fantastic! It’s easily walkable to lots of great restaurants and a block away from Alamo Square Park.

We had such a lovely time at The Grove Inn, it was a very simple process to check in and out, and they were also totally understanding about a last minute late check out, it made our trip so much easier! I did book through an outside website, and because of that, there were some communication issues, but would highly recommend just checking in with them to confirm all of your details are correct. Cannot recommend this place enough, especially the bay window rooms for the full San Francisco experience!

We have stayed several times at The Grove Inn and have always have a wonderful time. The contactless check-in is convenient for late arrivals. The inn is convenient to 3 MUNI bus lines to get anywhere in the city. The neighborhood is relatively safe too.

Self check-in (it was a late night arrival) was a breeze. Very clean! Very nice! Simple, and small room with a very comfy bed. The bathroom looks brand new. Will stay here again.

This was my third stay at the Grove Inn. My wife and I like the Grove in because: it is close to our son's apartment, the rooms are clean and well cared for, it is reasonably quiet, the staff is helpful, and it is walkable to many great bakeries-Tartine, the Mill, and Schlotz Bagels. It has ambiance that the chain motels do not have. We have recommended to other family.

Very convenient and safe location. On street parking 2 hour max but several places available. Rooms are smallish, but good. Only downside is that ground floor rooms facing on Fillmore St are adjacent to the bus stop, so noise sometimes a problem. We stay there regularly.

We love the cozy, friendly inn. It is in a safe part of town, walking distance to Hayes Valley. The price is reasonable. Breakfast is very basic since covid times.

We loved our stay at The Grove Inn. Always felt safe, even walking at night. The beds and pillows were super comfy! The best we’ve ever slept on! The contactless check-in was easy to use. They even sent us a text message before arriving to help with the check-in progress. The staff were super friendly and our kids loved the snacks in the room. They do have quiet hours which you may or may not like (we liked). Alamo Square Cafe was an added bonus nearby for coffee and breakfast sandwiches. Thank you for making our stay great!

I planned to stay at the Grove Inn for two nights in July. We checked in late afternoon and everything seemed fine until it’s time to go to bed and we found a spider between our pillows. It was around 11pm at this point and front desk had left and there was not an emergency number that we could call. So we left the hotel and found another lodging arrangement. It is not reasonable to expect guests to stay in a room with bugs. We emailed the hotel immediately, with pictures, and time stamp, as well but did not get a response until the next morning. I have been trying to get a refund since but they claimed I stayed over the first night. We did not stay over the first night. I’d have loved to settle this between the hotel and myself but the Hotel is not cooperating. I also called Expedia, their 3rd party company handling reservation but Expedia would need their OK to process a refund. I don’t think it is fair to expect anybody to sleep in such condition. I don’t recommend you staying here at all for your own convenience.
