A meal, and also an experience. On top of a small curated menu, servers would bring dishes dim-sum style all throughout our meal. We did not say no to any of them and tried every single dim-sum; it was really fun rating all of them and talking about our takes. I personally liked the dim-sum dishes better than the dishes on the main menu. The dessert was also awesome – definitely try the shot of milk and the ice cream sandwiches. We ended up spending exactly $100 per person (no alcohol) and we left absolutely stuffed. I would definitely recommend, and it's better if you come with 3 friends who are open to sharing food :)

It's done very well don't get me wrong, but maybe my own expectations were too high. The flavors were interesting enough and the quality is there, but if you're expected to get blown away you might leave a tiny bit disappointed. The signature state bird dish although good, didn't leave me with a strong impression as if I never tried it before or had to get it again. The dishes that did stand out to me were the tofu dish, the fish dip and chips, and the desserts which I would get again.

Overall, fantastic experience dining at State Bird. The food was so delicious! Definitely a unique menu that changes seasonally. Everything our party ordered, we shared and had family-style dinner throughout the entire evening. We ordered several 'snacks', 'provisions' and a couple 'breads' before the 'commandables' and everyone was satisfied and had just enough to eat (we were a party of 6). The service throughout the evening was great; they have very friendly staff who made us feel quite welcome. I'd love to revisit in another season just to try new menu items!

Dined here for our anniversary dinner. Love that it’s affordable fine dining. We made reservations for 9pm but they were able to seat us earlier when we showed up at opening time. We sat at the counter and it was quite enjoyable watching the kitchen operate. The head chef was very meticulous with her staff in addressing quality control and customer feedback. Atmosphere was a little hectic but in a good way, service was great. We enjoyed the dim sum style options (oysters, trout dip and chips, cucumber and feta, duck liver, tofu). We also ordered the steak and ham fried rice option which we couldn’t finish due to the generous portions. Dessert was yuzu tart, chocolate pave, peanut milk shots. Next time I’m here, I’d probably just do the dim sum options, and maybe some appetizers and dessert.

The seasonal menu at this restaurant is always incredible. They make such good use of their ingredients and the dim sum style service of all their small plates is possibly my favorite way to eat. I love being able to see and smell the food before I choose to eat it. The staff is also super accommodating, especially their host Megan. My favorite thing to do is to get 9pm reservations on a random weekday at the counter so I can watch all of the food being prepared also. It is overall a lively, fun, and really engaging food experience, plus all of their dishes are reasonably priced for the super high quality. The pictures used are from their fall menu.

Delicious! My sister took me out here when I was visiting her in San Fran and it was phenomenal. Service was great and the food was unbelievable. There is outdoor seating which was perfect for us. Indoor seating is a little bit tight and most masks were off. We left feeling so full!

Absolutely unique, fun and delicious dining experience. All dishes can be customized. Here’s the note how the menu can be adapted for vegan. I ended up being very flexible, accepting most vegetarian dishes. My favorite was fig toast and yuba noodles. No cocktails. But the wine and beer menu is large. Also, the neighboring bar will satisfy all cocktail wishes. We ended up with $80 per person, which I think is very reasonable for a one star Michelin.

Simply mind blowing. Dim sum style where small modern fusion plates are carted around and you can order whatever appeals to you. Your server will also help with drinks and recommendations of a la carte items. The food is world class. They have a well deserved Michelin designation. And you have to line up for any hope of a walk in - so definitely a reservation is necessary. Even with reservations, you have to book well ahead. The space is intimate and cozy. But has a super vibrant vibe. And the service is top notch. It's an open kitchen too so you can watch the amazing coordination of all of the cool staff to the servers. Can't say enough. Five stars all around. 5 x 🥣🥣🥣🥣🥣

I was fascinated by the concept of small, prepared plates offered tableside by wait staff. Most of the dishes are interesting and unique. The small plate options seem to be inspired by Spanish tapas I really enjoyed sampling uncommon and flavorful food at this popular restaurant. The wine prices could be helped by offering more value and priced lower. The place has a modern hipster vibe and it's ideal as a first-date venue, as you can make pleasant conversation and talk about the fun food you'll both be enjoying during those awkward moments of prolonged silence.

Such a fun unique experience of dim sum style service. Everything was also very very good. They rotate their menu fairly frequently, so you have to keep an eye out for what is being served that night. The servers are also very helpful but based on how the rotations of food come out, you could be left waiting. My suggestion as with any dim sum place is to be proactive in asking what is available and if there is anything specific you want. The highlight for me was the black cod collar. This was the best collar I have ever had. I spent just over 100$ and I’m a really big eater. Under 100$ pp is definitely reasonable if not getting drinks. Would definitely come back again.

Came here to celebrate my birthday. The concept of dimsum style plates is good, ambience is great, but I cannot get over the fact that the food wasn't what I was expecting - especially for a Michelin starred restaurant. Pork belly was excellent, the steak tartar was also good, but the rest of the dishes were mediocre at best. Sad to say that it was a let down.

An absolute must go. Atmosphere was lively, staff was super friendly and attentive, and the food was spoke for itself, visually and tastefully. They have their items going around in the carts dim-sum style which were all really good. I found myself going back for more on over half the items. Thank you for an amazing dinner, SBP. ✊️

Amazing culinary experience all around. We ate dim sum-style from beginning to end because we didn’t want to miss out on any creations and skipped the main courses from the main straight to dessert. We were able to try almost everything and it was all amazing with each bite an explosion of flavors. Fun lively and modern dining room with open kitchen so you can watch the artistry. A must try.

Very nice! We had a bottle of cider shared between the two of us and four dishes. But the portions were small. All small dishes in size. I also really liked the dessert - the olive oil cake with cream snd pistachios. Excellent. The staff were friendly and nice. Not too much not too less. What I didn’t like was actually their signature dish the little chicken. But it had too many small bonds.

We stumbled on this restaurant before heading to the Fillmore for a concert and we are so glad we did. While it had an outdoor seating area, we decided to sit inside and took the last two seats at the kitchen bar. We quickly fiound out that in addition to their fixed menu they do a dim sum style service where they bring out sharing plates good for 2 people ranging from $5-$16. Or favourite was a simple dish with fresh peas, creme fraiche, roasted cashews and some spice. The atmosphere was vibrant and humming, the food was amazing and the staff was awesome especially Nathan who took time to chat and explain the many dishes going by. In the end we had seven dishes, four drinks and it cane out to less than $150.00. A true gem in San Francisco.

A great meal to start our adventure in San Francisco. Found it very cool that Chef Gaby was on the pass as we walked in, always nice to see the chef in action. The food was phenomenal! Duck liver mousse and trout/allium dip were delicious. Dumplings were simple but full of flavor. Honestly the highlights were the farm greens ohitashi and the blistered pole beans. So many different flavors that blended so well together. The quail was tender and juicy, really crispy skin! Great options for everyone, including my picky sister! Wine selection was also very diverse and interesting. Chose a 2012 macerated wine from Slovenia and it paired so well with everything. Highly recommend to anyone!

Absolutely phenomenal! I was dining alone and the staff made sure to check in with me constantly and have some small talk. This is a place to share food with your party so they also offered me half dishes in order for me to have the full experience tasting several dishes. I would totally recommend and will definitely stop by the next time I’m in SF.

Celebrated my birthday here and they gave us free shots of the peanut muscovado milk which was a nice gesture. Server was kind and very attentive. Despite good service and the great ambiance (I really love that you can see the food being prepared), the food was just ok. Some of the appetizers/small dishes came out cold as if they were left out for a long time just waiting to be served (case in point, the potato chips served with the smoked allium dip), and the super cold mini almond financiers served alongside the duck liver mousse. The main star of the show, the CA state bird itself, was a bit underwhelming and very tiny for a $20 dish.

A curated dining experience from start to finish. I came here for a birthday celebration and they picked the perfect table, with exquisite service from start to finish. The start bird, quail, definitely stood out as the showstopper of the meal (breaded, seasoned, and fried to perfection). Although not all the dishes had flavors that I thought worked, the sheer variety of flavors were a sight to behold. Other honorary mentions: sauerkraut toast, pork belly, and the smoked ham toast. For someone who wants to try many different flavors from a melting pot of cuisines and appreciates an exquisite level of service, this is the perfect restaurant for you.

Amazing food and service. Everything was amazing, new innovative flavors. The textures and flavors on display were new and enjoyable. All these different ingredients combined very well to create unique flavors. The service was as expected from a high end restaurant, amazing. Did not have to wait long for food and I quite enjoyed being able to see the food through their dim sum style flavoring. I accidentally stabbed my waiter in the hand and I wanted to apologize but she just left. I felt very bad and if you are seeing this, I am sorry. Along with the food and service, the atmosphere was average. I would give 3 stars to the atmosphere but they played amazing music. I’m talking Kanye, rap, r&b, and a lot of amazing songs. This really heightened my energy and senses. Overall amazing.

This was a new territory for us, aside from fried quail, every meal we took was dim sum style, and every meal that came on a cart was unique and bursting with flavour. Even simple salads were amazing! I recommend getting smoked duck, fried quail, and the oysters. The favorite was the pan fried tail of a halibut, and to top everything off we ordered black sesame chocolate mousse for dessert. That was the best dessert I have ever had in a restaurant in my life. Just try it!!!

Definitely lived up to the hype! The corn machine and oysters were out favorites for apps though I also loved the egg custard and mushrooms. Did the state bird and it was crunchy but hard to not just eat like a heathen. In a good way. Peanut butter milk shot was everything I hoped for. Overall would say it's upscale but laid back and food matches that vibe. Not the best versions of everything I've had but the style of service and atmosphere made it a perfect night. We went on Tuesday and it was full the whole time, but reservations were easy to get 2 weeks out.

This was our first Michelin star restaurant. It was the best experience ever! Chef Gaby and line chef Seve made our dining experience perfect. Each plate had flavours exploding in our mouths. We love the idea of dim sum style of unique Don’t miss it!

We happened to be in the area and just walked in and were surprised that we were able to be seated outside at their parklet. I really appreciated that the staff had none of the puffed-up ego and fake pretentiousness that other nearby restaurants like Che Fico have. Instead the staff was very welcoming, courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly just as you'd hope for. Food was really innovative both in flavors and combinations and presented very nicely. Portions size did vary, for example the curried coconut shrimp toast (excellent!) was very generous, while the 'state bird' entree was small. Definitely worth a visit! We wanted to try a bunch of things so maybe ordered too much, and had leftovers to take home. The tab was about $55 a person with wine. This was less than we expected actually.

We had a great experience at State Bird! Our favorite dishes were the starters and salads, the flavors of the sauces were vibrant and unique! Interesting fusion flavors, beautiful presentation. Our server was also amazing! Although the quail was good, being the signature dishes of this restaurant, they were not spectacular. We tried the state Bird provisions one that they always have and the "cover" bird. The red trout was also a bit lackluster. The sauerkraut pancakes were unexpected, cheesy, pretty good.

Unique dining experience with good food, superb deserts, and wonderful ambiance (plus great 80s music playing!). I will admit most of the food options were underwhelming compared to all the hype I heard for this place, but don’t let that deter you: the experience is so worth it. Plus the changing menu will have me coming back to try more. The deserts, however, were spectacular. The peanut milk shot and the pumpkin ice cream sandwich with black sesame macaron as the “bread” were genius! They’re also mainstays on the menu so highly recommend you leave room for them at the end.

Very impressive restaurant! Both food and service were excellent. Every plate exceeded my expectations and had very unique flavor combinations (my favorite was fried pork belly with fish vinaigrette). Happy we got to try this place out - make sure you make reservations beforehand. We ordered six dishes for two people and I felt that was more than enough (even had left overs).
