Decent place to stay/ sleep if you're not going to spend too much time at the hotel. They need to have more lights in rooms as well as passages. It was all very dimly lit. Also in today's age it is a basic requirement to have a plug point near the bed for phone charger. They didn't have it. There was a single plug between the beds in which the brighter of the 2 light sources of the room was plugged in. Cleanliness was good. Staff was friendly. Bathroom was spacious, clean and had a hair dryer with basic toiletries. There's a 24 hr Starbucks right downstairs literally as a part of the lobby so that's very convenient. The area is however not very safe with a lot of homeless people around but the hotel security is good. It is not safe to step out alone at night.

It was a nice hotel, but nothing really made it anything more than average. I had two adjoining room doors in mine which allowed the sound from the other rooms to carry into mine very easily. The staff is very friendly and the room was perfectly clean. For anyone interested in San Francisco history, this would be an amazing hotel to stay at! The architecture, although not my style, was beautiful. Overall, I'd stay here again, but I wouldn't necessarily put it above any other hotel.

A very old world, traditional hotel. It has grandeur. Gorgeous chandeliers lots of marble. And lots of old carpets. It's a juxtaposition between elegance and needing an update. There aren't a lot of amenities. The location is good it's right on the corner of Union square and sketchy. So make sure you turn right when you leave the front.

The hotel staff is friendly and professional. It is a beautiful historic hotel but does need some updates. The beds are very comfortable and the rooms are clean. The restaurant in the hotel was very good with great service! The only reason I'm not giving it more stars is due to the amount of homeless people outside the hotel. The homeless don't bother you and the hotel staff does a great job of keeping them away but at night they can get loud and seem to fight among one another. If you don't mind a little adventure this is a great hotel!

This is a beautiful old downtown hotel, that is in a great location for a lot of things you might want to do while in San Francisco. We stayed here on a recent business/fun trip for about a week. The lobby of the hotel was amazing. The building was built in 1906 just after the big earthquake and has been taking care of quite nicely. It was full of stained wood with craftsmen details and lots of marble and other beautiful details throughout. Our hotel room was a little on the small side. The room had two small full-size beds we slept separately since they were so small, though we could've shared one. The room had one window that opened about 3 inches tonight in air. There was an air conditioner/heater unit but we didn't use it while we were there. Our room had a television and a safe, but no refrigerator. Despite the small size it was quite comfortable and we heard no outside noise even though the hotel was fully booked the week we were there. The bathroom is quite small. The shower just big enough for showering, but there is room to raise your arms above your head to wash your hair. You could literally wash your hands while sitting on the toilet.

This place was a sketchy dump years ago, friends of mine stayed there and described moldy bathrooms, bedbugs, and unsympathetic management. Then it was used to house homeless in the first couple years of the Covid pandemic. Now they’re getting paid nearly $20 million by the taxpayers of San Francisco for “shelter in place damages”. Apparently no one bothered to supervise the beneficiaries, and now the city is handing the owners of this hotel a 20 million dollar payout. To correct some misinformation in another recent review: this hotel is absolutely NOT “right on Union Square”. It is on Market Street near 8th, and to get to Union Square from this location on foot requires a walk down several of the most blighted blocks on Market, then a left turn at Powell (cable car turnaround) and up several more blocks.

Historically significant hotel in many ways. More recent history, someone died of a drug overdose about 1x a month or 18x or more during the pandemic inside this hotel, and possibly even in your own room! Sweet dreams and welcome to san francisco!

Just checked out yesterday. We stayed for about 5 days. The rooms were very clean, and I never heard a peep or sound from anyone. That was also because I was in room 392, which is very very far from everyone and everything. The staff was extremely nice, no doubt about that. The only issue I was having, was my room card kept getting messed up, because it was somehow close to my cell phone, when my cell phone was never near it. If your looking for something fancy, and free breakfast, this is not your spot. This is definitely a place to sleep comfortably after long days and nights. Also understand the area that you are in, is not a very good area, but the hotel has plenty of security for that. I felt safe, and you should too.

I just left 4 days of delight at the Hotel Whitcomb, with a sense of living in one of the most historical buildings in San Francisco. The classic hotel has been kept in its historical state with amazing fittings full of character. Its so affordable and in the best location in the main street with easy access to the Market Street trams and bus and Civic centre Bart. The staff are just lovely and helpful. I could sit in the foyer all day and enjoy the classical furniture and listen to the great music. My bed was the most comfortable of all I have stayed in 2 months. If you want a sterile modern hotel, well this may not be for you but I travel for culture and hospitality and this hotel has it in bucket loads. Costs are kept down by taking your own suitcase up the classic lift and buying breakfast at the cafe. All wonderful too. Thank you Whitcomb Hotel staff, particularly Esmaralda and Bernie. From you Aussie guest who loved my stay and will be back. Make sure you are still around.. Thank you

My friend and I stayed at the Hotel Whitcomb on our business trip to the bay area. The hotel staff was very friendly upon arrival and helped ensure that we had a great stay. The room we stayed in was comfortable. We thought the bathroom layout was quite odd but we enjoyed it nonetheless. It was too tempting not to get Starbucks constantly being that Starbucks was connected to the main lobby of the hotel. That specific area on Market Street I wouldn't necessarily class as the "safest." There are some very sketchy individuals about and one day some bystander gestured to hit my friend in the genitals. We almost caused a commotion but decided to just keep on walking. Other than that, the hotel itself is fine if you're just looking for a place to sleep. Don't expect something 5-star. While I'm sure the hotel was great it's in hay day - that day sure ain't today.

This was a great place to stay that was close to the theatres and also the tram line into town. Whilst outside the hotel was a little messy, that can not be blamed on the hotel. Would definitely stay again if in town.

We were booking last minute so we were very great full to have a place to stay at all but the accommodations were a little lackluster for the price tag. The lobby is stunning and the hallways are exquisite. However two of the beautiful elevators were out of order forcing all of the guests and staff to cram onto the remaining two. Additionally while some of the furnishings in the rooms have been updated with lovely pieces some appliances like the toilet are still their original terrible selves. The scenic views from our room was a lovely Vista of the next door hotel across the span of a very noisy construction site. The bed however was delightful and the staff was patent and helpful.

I stay here a lot for big San Francisco festivals because it's in a convenient location for events in SOMA and Civic Center . If you're looking for an ultra-modern boutique hotel in a swanky part of town, this isn't it. It's old but it's charming. The lobby is gorgeous and the staff is classy and friendly. I'm sure at some point they'll have flat screen TVs and sophisticated mini-bars and marble bathrooms, but for now, with the exception of free wifi, you'll be stuck somewhere between 1916 and 1996. I'm not saying it's decrepit by any means. It's clean and old-time stylish. It's just not modern by today's standards. It's on Market Street. If you're familiar with Market you'll know that you'll have access to great transportation but the street scene isn't glamorous. Edit: It’s now a homeless shelter.

Never had I been so blessed by Homeless Shelter life. Whitcomb Hotel was definitely the high point of this gieny-pig trials of technology tests in preparation of ObamaNation's More Perfect Union.

He's extremely talented and sweet, and on our anniversary, he even gave us a free late check-out! The hotel was in a good place, had a large number of rooms, and had very comfortable bedding. Our concierge, particularly the person who checked us in, was fantastic. The halls were spotless and silent. I'm sure we'll come back the next time. This hotel has received a lot of positive reviews.
