Newly renovated–a lot of the rooms have private bathrooms now–and it's clear they've put in the effort the past few years, cause this place has come a long way from what it was. It's still definitely a budget hotel, one of the cheapest in the area, in fact. I've stayed in almost every cheap hotel in downtown SF–you can't beat the price here. With that in mind, my best advice is: HAVE REASONABLE EXPECTATIONS. The 6th street location is actually very convenient. Lots of nearby transit & it's in walking distance of the mall/Union Square. Clearly it's cleaned up a lot in recent years, as well. 6th street used to be liquor stores, low income housing, & homeless people. Now, there's busy nightclubs, bars, and restaurants all along the street. The homeless problem is still painfully obvious, & noise from the alleyways can often be heard thru the night, especially if your windows are open. Thankfully, the staff does a good job of keeping the crazies out. If they don't recognize you, they may stop you on your way in to check your name/room #... Don't take it personally...they're just making sure everyone stays safe, and at least they arent rude about it. Even so, the crowd is diverse to say the least. If you're uptight, you should probably stay away. Unlike other nearby hotels with similar rates, however, there's no gross bugs, they do their best to keep it clean, and they don't play any games or try to get over on anyone. They're fair about returning your deposit at checkout, as well. In conclusion, if you're a single traveler or a couple looking for a cheap place to sleep and shower in the middle of downtown SF, this is a solid choice.

It's slightly worth less than what you'd expect. I didn't like the first room. But the landlords son (who is hella cute, btw) was nice to change rooms for me.

went to check into this hotel yesterday & when we walked in there was barely room for the bed. my room at my house was bigger than this room. i’d say it’s much more of a hostel than a hotel. lots of drug addicted people & nasty bathrooms. just being in the room made me feel gross and unsafe. i immediately checked the sheets on the bed and i found blood on them! gross. the manager asked to clean the room for me but i didn’t want that so he switched us rooms! the next room was a little bigger but still dirty and made me very uncomfortable. very unsanitary. would give 0 stars if i could but that isn’t an option. we ended up going to a different hotel called the oasis inn a few blocks up the road and it is a way better CLEAN place. consider switching to there if you don’t want something too expensive. still is a little pricier than sunny side though, but worth it.

I was there for 2 hours and left to other place. I couldn’t imagine spending there all night. Everything is dirty, i was scared to even sit at the bad, would never sleep on it. The bed cover is all in hols from cigarettes. Outside is even worse, at least 10-15 homeless people, stinky, loud, some gangsters on the corners. Just nightmare!

The number of bugs is disturbing. Get pest control immediately. I'm surprised this place is allowed to stay open. No joke I saw easily 8 different species of bugs and a total of over a hundred and that's just the one room.

Situated in an older building with steep steps and narrow winding hallways, Sunnyside is a classic remnant of San Francisco SRO style hotels available to the public. The hallmark of efficiency, affordability, acceptance, and privacy - offers all the basic necessities to mind your own business and not have to deal with the tech fueled craze of San Francisco real estate. There are 3 floors with decent size rooms with traditional lock and key doors. Most have a sink and a closet, as well as a TV, fridge, microwave, and other basic appliances. Some have nice views of the area. Speaking of the area - 6th Street and Mission is a well known corner packed full of SF flavor and local action, stores, bars, clubs, social services, hotels... And not much further museums, all sorts of public transit, shopping, restaurants, luxurious hotels and pretty much all of the city - it's a very central location but be on guard is always good advice. Don't be overly wary though - explore and communicate. Showers and bathrooms are shared. Towels are on request basis. Ring the bell to be let in. The employees are polite but can be quiet and a bit careful. Despite all the location warnings the place has always appeared peaceful and safe inside. Simple, modest, affordable, comfortable, and efficient! Definitely one of the nicer hotels of its class!

Scariest place I’ve ever been to in my whole life. Burn holes on the bed sheets, extremely dirty, burn makes all over the bathroom, no mirror. Huge holes in the hotel door the size hands can get through. Homeless screaming and playing music outside my window all night, I was genuinely scared for my safety. Terrible part of SF. And to top it off I got so extremely sick after catching a bacterial infection most likely from this place. And not to mention it was still not cheap.

Good place if your desperate and don't have a credit card and can't spring for a deposit but be prepared to bring your own towels and blankets. The comforter on the bed is scary looking as hell and never ever try a blacklight experiment in one of the rooms or you will freak. Also shared bathrooms and showers. Two per floor and mostly pretty clean except for graffiti which is a constant battle for them I am sure. No ice or room service either lol

BRING LYSOL, EAR PLUGS & RAID. Good price but room is BELOW SANITARY. I stayed one night, there was left over trash in the room, fridge & microwave were terrible. The room had roaches and reeked of cigarette smoke. Bedding had holes and stains. The headboard was covered in some old, liquid residue and the walls were graffitied. This is the ownership of slumlords- FOR SURE! Not suited for tourists.

Great place if you are travelling on a budget - remember this is not the Marriott! You are paying for a budget hotel! Try get a room with a private bathroom - sharing a loo and shower with other strangers is the real low point of this hotel. Staff are awesome, helpful, and friendly. Yes, lots of homeless people outside, but they are harmless, and shouldn't make one feel unsafe. It does get a bit noisy at night, so you may have a sleepless night or 2. All in all, not bad.

Pretty filthy. Clean sheets are covered with dirt and stains, asking for a replacement got me a comforter covered in cigarette burns. Any talking to the person behind the desk in the morning was responded with "wait until the other guy shows up."

You get what you pay for. If walking down 6th street alone makes you nervous then you won't want to stay here.

They were very nice and polite but a little pricey for me so i stayed elsewhere because my work travel allowance is very small .

Once you make it through the front gate and up the very steep stairs, the facility is updated and clean. Good value for the price

Roaches were too much and the bathrooms were not stocked with toilet paper and a bit raunchy

The people were so nice and helpful. The rooms and bathrooms were well kept and well stocked. The elevator always worked and was never "stuck" on any particular floor. It is also really close to Market st and Powell st. And public transportation also runs very closely in all directions throughout the city.

Not only have I stayed here for conferences for years and never had any problems, they also went above and beyond to help with accommodations I requested and refunded payments! Thank you Sunnyside! Other things: it is a budget hotel but lives up to every dollar you spend. Be careful of surroundings at night, though a very short walk to convention center!
