Great place to visit in San Francisco. The visit is free with Go San Francisco Pass. There were many amazing collections from different Asian countries. Each piece of art is a story to be told. It makes you understand and appreciate the Asian culture. It has many traditional elements such as woodblock prints. The building interiors are beautiful especially the stairs.

EXQUISITE !!! Definitely top notch and world class collections in the heart of SF and easily accessible by public transportation or by walking if you’re staying in the city. Excellent building and exhibit layout and its not overwhelming. Prepare to spend about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to really appreciate what it offers. Check out the cafe - it’s a must!!! Museum cafes are known to be grab and go, but this one is different and the other reviews are correct. The museum store looks like a high end boutique and is definitely worth checking out. This is one of the museums you will really enjoy. Update: They have a separate entry special exhibit, “Team Lab Continuity.”

SO AMAZING!! My personal favorite museum in SF. There’s such an extensive collection of Asian Art, from Chinese, Korean and Japanese, as well as South East Asian art. The art spans various centuries and are so beautiful! You will definitely spend at least 3-4 hours here. I felt like 2 hours wasn’t enough time to get a good look at the collection. Will come back and explore more for sure! They also had the TeamLab: Continuity exhibit which was such an immersive experience! There were flowery scents to really bring you into the exhibit, and the visual effects were superb.

This is another treasure of SF! Many great ancient artworks and different types of arts. IMHO, it is better than SFMOMA since you can understand and relate the arts to our life. Highly highly recommend

Was surprised that there was quite a lot to see in the museum! Definitely worth the $35 I paid and if you're a history geek, it's super definitely worth. Came here for the Murakami exhibit -- which was cool -- but the rest of the museum was awesome as well. Very quiet on weekdays, which is nice, as you can take your time.

This highly underrated and below the radar, for many, museum has an extensive collection of art from many periods and cultures. Exhibits ranging from the Persian empire, India, Pakistan and other areas of the Far East are displayed across all three floors. I easily spent 2 hours in the wonderful, modern and extensive museum. Go on the 1st Sunday of each summer month and admission is free. It's well worth the price :-)!!

On the first Sunday of the month, tickets are free for San Francisco residents. a lot of sections of different Asian countries are very informative and interesting, most of the exhibits are from China. The mother-in-law museum looks big, but inside there are few halls where you can enjoy history. we went through all the halls with exhibits in 1.5 hours. they also put up a table with souvenirs at $ 1 dollar at the store, we bought 10 openly for $ 1

Discovering the Asian Museum was a delightful journey into the heart of Asian artistry. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, offering visitors a chance to experience the beauty of the artwork from unique perspectives. The displays are carefully arranged, allowing for a truly immersive encounter with the rich tapestry of Asian culture. What struck me immediately was the thoughtful use of lighting, casting a play of colors and shadows that added depth and further enhanced the overall ambiance. It's evident that the museum's team has put meticulous effort into creating an atmosphere that complements the art and fosters a sense of appreciation. For those who haven't visited yet, I strongly encourage you to take the time to explore the Asian Museum. It's not just a collection of artifacts; it's a journey through Asian arteries, providing a glimpse into the intricate and captivating world of Asian art. You're sure to leave amazed, having gained a newfound understanding and appreciation for the beauty encapsulated within these exhibits. Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in this cultural treasure trove—it's an experience that seamlessly blends education and fascination.

This review is for the exhibit TeamLab: Continuity. The magic, colors and interactive activities make this a perfect exhibit for everyone in the family. I was blown away by the detail and beauty of the exhibit. By far, it is my favorite interactive digital exhibit. Don’t miss out on the room in the back where you can lie on the floor while the visuals fly to instrumental music. Also, make sure to take time to color in a sea creature in the Sketch Ocean exhibit before you go in. You may see your creation swimming through the exhibit like I did! I highly recommend the exhibit alone. Plus the ticket is only $25 and includes access to the whole museum which is a wonder in itself!

Got tickets to the teamlab: Continuity it was absolutely beautiful the colors so vibrant. Photo opportunities aplenty. The long fish room was my favorite make sure to interact with the fish and other falling items on the walls it's a fun surprise. I highly recommend going and enjoying the amazing talent that created this.

My favorite Asian Art Museum on the West Coast! We got free tickets from the San Mateo County Library that offered free passes through their Discover and Go system. This gave us access to the special teamLab exhibit, which was stunning, as well as the regular exhibits. A must when you’re in town!

I visited the Asian Art Museum for the first time today and it was a wonderful experience. The museum has four (4) levels, three (3) of which are open to the public. The museum is located directly across from city hall and adjacent to the main public library. One thing that San Francisco does extremely well is its museums. One thing I really appreciate about this museum is its dedication to honoring the rich history and legacies of the Asian diaspora. There are unique pieces from all over APIDA (East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander) populations is truly a sight to behold. This is a great place for families and I highly encourage everyone to visit if you’re able.

Came here during free first Sunday. The museum focuses on Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Korean art. A bit disappointing since the Asian continent is large and diverse beyond these four. However, the collection the museum does have is large, beautiful and well organized. I recommend starting from the top floor, slowly making your way down and finishing at the nice gift shop. It is worth the visit and admission is free on the first Sunday of the month.

We attended the absolutely beautiful and mysterious "teamLab: continuity" and it was unforgettable. So easy at first sight, all these colors and music make this experience a true magic. I appreciate the Asian Art Museum team for helping me reschedule the visit and being so nice and patient. I would definitely give the 5 stars if the guard that made us leave the room at 4.57 was a little bit more polite. It's sad that sometimes a rude staff member can change the impression.

Went to the Asian Art Museum right after landing from SFO! It was perfect because it was a straight shot from the BART (exit on Civic Center then about a 4 minute walk). They let us keep our luggage in their coat concierge as it was too early for us to check into our hotel. The Murakami exhibit was so special and then we got to see the rest of the museum with that admission ticket. Overall such a sweet experience!

Living in Asia, i visited here out of curiosity about the Asian Museum. Found out that the museum was having Murakami exhibition. It's very interesting and colourful. Feeling like immersing into the thought of Murakami. Well explained and curated. ❤️ The China ceramic section is very well curated. Love it. North East Asia and SEA exhibits were well curated but less interactive. Not much exhibits of SEA and the cultures.

Today, I stepped into the Asian Art Museum and embarked on a breathtaking journey across cultures, eras, and mediums. Words struggle to capture the sheer beauty and power that resonated from every wall and display. From the delicate brushstrokes of Japanese ink paintings whispering ancient stories to the vibrant glaze of Chinese ceramics pulsating with life, each piece felt like a portal to a different world. I found myself lost in the serene gaze of a Cambodian Buddha and awed by the intricate tapestry of Indian textiles. It was a symphony of senses, where history whispered through intricate patterns and vibrant colors danced before my eyes. But beyond the aesthetic splendor, the museum offered a profound cultural encounter. It challenged my preconceptions, broadened my understanding, and ignited a curiosity to delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Asian art forms. Each object, carefully curated and thoughtfully displayed, became a window into the soul of a civilization, whispering tales of human triumphs and sorrows, dreams and aspirations. And the best part? This experience can be yours for free on the first Sunday of every month! That's right, a chance to lose yourself in the heart of Asian art, to travel centuries and continents without leaving your city, all at no cost. It's an opportunity to ignite your imagination, open your mind, and reconnect with the universal language of art that transcends borders and speaks to the human spirit. So, I urge you, dear reader, do not miss this chance. Plan your visit for the next free Sunday, wander through the galleries, let the art envelop you, and witness the magic for yourself. You might just discover, as I did, that a museum visit can be more than just an afternoon activity; it can be a transformative journey that leaves you richer in spirit and inspired by the beauty of human creativity. Remember, art thrives on engagement, so let's celebrate its diversity and share the awe it inspires. Go forth, explore, and embrace the Asian Art Museum – a treasure trove of cultural riches waiting to be discovered.

A gorgeous museum with really interesting exhibitions. I went to see Tattoos in Japanese Prints. This exhibition was organized by MFA-Boston but was perfect for the Asian Art Museum. Everything was put into historical context, and I learned a lot. They also included some contemporary context of how Japanese-style tattooing manifests in the San Francisco area, including particular tattooists and examples of their work. Admission pricing is a little on the high side, but with stellar exhibitions, it’s worth it. The admissions staff is kind and welcoming. Highly recommended.

The gorgeous building facing the City Hall completes the picture of this SF 'Beaux Arts district'. Even more impressive it is inside with the exhibitions covering millennia of the oriental humankind history. The applied arts exhibits, statues, utensils, numerous paintings, books, carpets, ammunition, sacred objects, etc., grouped by once the most powerful civilizations that preceded modern Indian, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Arabian, Iranian peoples and the historical periods from their dawn to zenith to sunset will make you understand the richness and diversity, as well as lack of time to view and enjoy everything on one day. Even if you prefer the modern arts (SFMoMA) or the western civilization masterpieces (Legion of Honour) or exotic African-Oceanian culture (de Young), the AAM is a highly-recommended place to visit.

To see something in person that is hundreds/thousands of years old in it's (near?) original form, color, and hand detailing is amazing. A shout-out to all those involved from the artifact finding to restoration to display; a fabulous job bringing a piece of history to the present.

We went for the Teamlab exhibit! It’s a really interesting interactive light exhibit. The projections on the wall are touch sensitive so play to your hearts desire! Went for the team labs: Continuity exhibit and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s an immersive exhibit of sound and cohesive designs and colors that you have to experience at least once. For $20 a ticket, I would say it’s alright for the price, but it is a little small and lacking when you compare to the original teamlabs in Tokyo (which are phenomenal exhibits and hard to live up to!). If you haven’t been to those, I would definitely try to snag this one while it’s around. You need to soak in every part of the exhibit in its entirety to appreciate what they’ve done (also to really make the most of the ticket), but all in all, it was a nice break from the outside world to explore and feel what the designers intended for us to feel. Good photo opportunities too.

Asian Art Museum in San Francisco is one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian art. The museum's collection spans over 6,000 years and includes more than 18,000 objects from different regions of Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, India, Southeast Asia, and the Himalayas. The collection includes a wide range of mediums, such as paintings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, and decorative arts. The museum offers a variety of exhibitions and programs throughout the year, including special exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and performances. It also has a research library and a bookstore specializing in Asian art and culture. The objects in the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco are arranged based on various themes, regions, and time periods. The museum has a comprehensive collection that spans over 6,000 years of Asian art history, so the arrangement of objects allows visitors to explore different aspects of Asian art. The museum's permanent collection is organized into galleries that focus on specific regions or themes. For example, there are galleries dedicated to Chinese art, Japanese art, Korean art, Indian art, Southeast Asian art, and Himalayan art. Within these galleries, the objects are further organized by time period, artistic style, or chronological order, allowing visitors to see the development of artistic styles and techniques over time. They may also be grouped thematically, highlighting common motifs or cultural traditions for example there was an exhibition with the theme of dance that explored the cultural significance of dance in art and its symbolic meanings In addition to the permanent collection, the museum also hosts special exhibitions that feature specific artists, periods, or themes. These exhibitions may have their own unique arrangement and display design, depending on the curatorial vision.

They really do need to improve their restaurant. For an Asian museum to only have one type of tea is not good. The museum is definitely interesting but I truly wish they would bring more modern art of Asian artists.

I loved to know about different kind of art around Asia. You can go for free only the first Saturday of the month. The museum has 3 floors. The second floor and third floor have the main collection. For other exhibitions you must pay or reserve the tickets.

Great museum. It's free every first Saturday/Sunday or something like that. I recommend just doing the permanent exhibit if you're only coming once. It's well worth it and walks you through the cultures and art progressions of Asian. Particularly I love the southeast Asia art.

The Asian Art Museum is a rich and deep museum. It hosts one of the world's most comprehensive collections of Asian art. One can journey through 6000 years of time, and from Iran to Japan, and from Hinduism to Buddhism. I have visited it on three occasions and have only as of yet scratched the surface.

If you only have time for one art museum in San Francisco, choose this one! I'm not aware of anywhere else in the US that has the range and depth of Asian art on display in this institution. Even though one of the three floors is currently closed for remodeling, there is still plenty to see. I highly recommend taking a docent-led tour. Ours was one of the best that I had ever taken at a museum. The theme of the tour was representations of Buddha and how they had varied across time periods and regions. What made the tour excellent was that the tour was a mixed group of people from Western backgrounds, India, and China. The docent got the tour participants to share their perceptions on the different images of Buddha. This tour went deeply into the cultural perspectives on the works that we viewed--very impressive!

The museum houses an exquisite and diverse collection of Asian artifacts. Curated by region, country, culture and period. There is much to see here - truly an absolute feast for my eyes. I am amazed by how well artifacts are preserved, be they stone, metal, or wood and varying from thumbsized trinkets to large-scale sculptures. I don't cease being amazed by the remarkable, meticulous detail seen in Asian art. During this recent visit, one floor was closed off due to construction, renovation or new installation taking place. I look forward to the completion of it so that I (and whomever my guest will be) may fully enjoy this gem of a museum. Do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. ?

I recently told my 8th grade class the biography of the Dalai Lama so they were very interested and impressed with the special exhibit about Tibetan art. One of my favorite places in San Francisco, probably my favorite thing in the civic center area. This museum takes the broadest possible interpretation of Asian Art, so if you’re expecting a few thousand square feet of blue ceramics and calligraphy, you’ll be disappointed. It’s in a huge and gorgeous historic building, and there is interesting artwork from around the world and all across time.

The permanent exhibition is a real gem. They mark their best masterpieces by giving each a special central display in the room - and these are really quite exquisite, from ancient Chinese bronzes to more recent jade work etc. Shame the second floor was closed for reconstruction (until Nov 2019), I guess I will have to come back. Overall, a very pleasant visit, it's definitely a museum that's worth seeing.

I want to give this museum five stars so badly, but I can't. As luck would have it, during my visit, only the second floor was open for general admission. The first floor had a special kimono exhibit going on that I wasn't interested in paying an extra $10 to see. The third floor was closed for renovations. I paid full price to only see half a museum, which is not acceptable in my opinion. What a bummer.

One of the best museums I've been to. Much better and with more interesting artefacts than the one in Paris. I could wander there for hours, reading detailed descriptions and admiring art from cultures that are so unique to a European. I was lucky to get in for free, but I won't mind paying full price next time I'm in San Fran.

When I first came here on a class trip in September of 2018 and I'd like to say that this place is just so serene and relaxing. Though since it was a class trip, me and my classmates were able to enter for free. The regular fee is $15 for adults. There are two floors of exhibits and I really recommend for people to go through it all. In my opinion, every item on display in this museum is worth the read if you have the time because the history behind it all is just so unique and beautiful! I do suggest for people to not talk very loud since the museum does have a slight echo and the rooms are extremely silent. There is also a large cafe on the first floor with a variety of Asian food on the menu and I really recommend their banh mi! Do take in mind that the temperature of this place is slightly cold so make sure to bring a coat or jacket because I took off my coat thinking it was a little warm when in fact it was cold. If you can, take the time to look through the items in the gift shop. I bought some matcha from here which was quite good, but do keep in mind that everything in the store is a little expensive. Other than that, this is a wonderful place to visit.

Okay, I have gone to a handful of NightLifes now that I have gotten the hang of the ins and outs and how to plan the trip to be efficient. Nightlife is from 6-10 on Thursdays and it's 21+, complete with a number of mars throughout the museum. Every nightlife is a different "theme" so you can either just go to go, or go depending on theme. Sometimes the themes make it busier than other nights, for example when they did a food theme (my previous review) which sold out and was PACKED.

Incredible! Absolutely worth a visit. Spectacular Asian art at its finest, particularly the Chinese dynasty period work along with the Hindu and Buddhist showcases.

My first time in this museum and I liked it. I only wish Japan was represented more. If you go on Sunday you can also visit farm market that's right next to it.

Enjoyed the visit very much. However, I feel the museum can acquire more artifacts and expand. I am not sure what they use the big hall on the third floor. It’s been empty for years. I hope they make good use of it.

The Continuity Labs exhibit was amazing to say the least. Very cool experience and well worth the price of admission. After the exhibit you can wonder around the museum for hours. Lots of great exhibits and collections to explore!

teamLab:Continuity, step in a dark hall, follow the maze like path into full blossom of flowers or deep ocean of colorful digital images, touch or step on images and watch how you are changing the images. It feels like one becomes a part of new dynamic artistic creation. Fantastic digital interactive art exhibit. The Chanel Miller 'I was I am I will be' exhibit make us feel artist's experience and find interpretation in our own life events.

The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a HUGE collection of American,European, Asian countries and Indian art from the impressionist era to present day. And the artists are all there displayed on the walls. Dozens of gallery's over multiple floors. Place was relatively quiet with less crowds in the early afternoon. Very well organized and managed. Well worth the visit. Note ratings below. This was not a tour. Individuals and small groups are free to enjoy the artwork without the need for a tour

Expansive collection of ancient Asian art and beautiful exhibitions as well. The Continuity Exhibit was my favorite, and is much better than the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibit.

We came for the teamLab Continuity exhibit and it was beyond what I could describe in words, truly. It’s an amazing experience, you may feel some weightlessness, I did get a little motion sickness - but that’s on me, I should have taken a break. We were in there for 45 straight minutes, and that was about my personal limit. This does not effect my review, that’s it’s a must see, truly incredible. $15 ticket price

My friend and I went for the Teamlab Continuity exhibit, and it was definitely worth it! We ended up spending nearly an hour and a half just in that exhibit alone. It's interactive, immersive, and engaging. The music paired with the digital art was great, and it wasn't too stimulating where some people might get nauseous etc. Would recommend! 👍

This was a decent museum, which I didn't bother to rate, as it was totally incomparable to those you find in Europe or Japan. But with Teamlabs' Continuity exhibit, it is a spectacular museum. They should have a bigger area devoted to this unique and exquisite immersive digital exhibit from Japan.

Came here for the continuity lights exhibit. It was great! There was a room where you can sit on the floor and immerse yourself in the moving lights and soothing music. A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

We had tix for the Team Lab exhibit. Wow! It's so beautiful. The interactive continuous lights projecting flowers, undersea gardens, butterflies etc. There are slight fragrances wafting through with music. It is a calming art show. With that ticket to the Team Lab exhibit, the permanent exhibits are included.

Incredible collection. We went to the tapestry exhibit which was fascinating, then visited a few other parts of the museum. It would take a long time to see it all! Excellent curation and informative wall text. I particularly enjoyed the video in the Tibetan area about the Wheel of Life

As a venue for a wedding reception this place is as exquisite as it gets. You'll have to keep your guest list to under 170 though. Further, being a museum, your catering options will be very limited. The floor available has exhibits your guests are allowed to view and appreciate during the cocktail hour, as long as you leave your drinks and food outside! Parking at the Civic Center underground lot is very convenient - entrance on Larkin. I look forward to visiting the Asian Art Museum as a regular tourist.

We spent 3 hours in this museum including the special Bollywood exhibit. They have such a gorgeous and diverse collection. We really enjoyed our day there. They have both guided and self guided tours and extra activities or classes available and a nice gift shop with both high quality and some more affordable options, a nice collection of books and a good section for children's gifts. There is also a cute museum cafe. FIRST Sundays are free, Thursdays are half off of main museum admission after 5pm. (We did the Thursday after 5pm, $10, plus our special exhibit $10.) Normal admission for am adult is $20.They are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

I went to this museum to see Murakami's exhibition a few weeks ago and I liked this space!! It's well-organized and all the rooms were connected in a way that was easy to remember, so you couldn't get lost. I will come back to see their other exhibitions in the future 😁😁

  • 5/5 Karis M. 4 months ago on Google
Went for the Murakami exhibit, overall great experience. You can easily spend an hour just on this exhibit alone. There’s an additional fee to gain access to the Murakami section but there’s a discount if you can go on the first Sunday of the month.

We went to see the Takashi Murakami exhibit currently on display. The museum was clean, well organized, staff was informative and the vibe was cool. There were helpful signs everywhere. We ended up getting an annual membership (Thanks CeCe) and used the price of our tickets towards a membership, which was awesome as the museum is a great place. We also went to the Cafe and got boba drinks, which weren't bad at all.

Came here in Dec 2023 to see Takashi Murakami’s Monsterized humans exhibit and listen to Life in a Zen Temple: Lecture, Zazen, and Tea with Abbot Kobori Geppo, Saturday. What a great experience. Highly recommended if you see this review and the museum is still showing them you should visit. Wont disappoint for sure.

There are only a couple weeks left of the murakami exhibit so I decided to go with some friends last weekend. It was incredibly fun! It's a great exhibit with lots of large scale paintings as well as a huge collection of monsters, and lots of cute photo opportunities for your insta. If you buy a ticket for the special exhibit it also covers your museum entrance. We checked out the third floor after which had some really cool art. My favorite was a really old iron drum with beautiful patina and this giant lingum with a face on it. I've seen faces painted on but I've never seen one sculpted on.

This was our first time visiting this museum and we had a great time. We came for the Takashi Murakami exhibit, but enjoyed everything else the museum had in exhibit as well. It’s a large and beautiful collection with lots to see. The Takashi exhibit was incredible and we were blown away by everything on display, definitely worth checking out.
