I loved Shizen. I'm new to the plant based movement and was skeptical when told that there was a place serving vegan sushi. So I went to check it out. What a great experience. The staff was excellent. The presentation, variety of textures, and flat out deliciousness of the food were amazing. Whether you are plant-based, plant curious, or just in the mood for something different, try this place. It won't disappoint.

Two years later and I still love it. Please expand and multiply. San Diego Vegan Sushi needs help 😂 I will never understand how you're able to make the spicy tofu so similar to actual spicy tuna 👏 The candlestick is hands down the #1 best roll. Also make a reservation at 5:00 PM (as soon as they open). You won't have to wait long at all to get seated!

The wait was worth it! To guarantee we could go, had to make a reservation two weeks in advance - no regrets! The space is not too big and it was packed, and now I understand the popularity. The sushi we had was fresh, creative, and delicious! Lots of tofu used in different ways (couldn't tell it was tofu if it wasn't written in the menu), mushrooms and algae. Also enjoyed the cocktail.

Vegan sushi restaurant with many different appetizers, vegetable rolls, and speciality rolls. The ambiance here is very cozy and the reservation requirement & table seating prevents it from getting too crowded. The kaarage (fried soy chicken) was decent, and enhanced with the lemon on top. The vegetable tempura was pretty standard and what you expect. The nirigi okra was probably my favorite dish we ordered: the okra themselves were roasted nicely to have a charred flavor and reduce inherent stickiness. As for the specialty rolls, I was very unimpressed. We got the Body and Soul, which was just alright (weirdly earthy flavor), and the Secret Weapon. I will say that the shredded tofu on the Secret Weapon gave it a unique texture and extracted some different flavor from the tofu. Last note, you know how you can buy reduced sodium soy sauce? The soy sauce they had got to be extra sodium. It was genuinely way too salty and I had to add water to my tray to dilute it. Overall, I’ve been to many vegetarian sushi restaurants (and regular sushi restaurants that serve vegetarian rolls) and this place just didn’t cut it for me. A 3/5 stars considering the large price tag on each item. I expected more flavor for what they’re charging.

If you look through my reviews I generally don’t give low ratings. Honestly, I value my time and my stomach and purposely find places that have great reviews and ones that critics themselves can enjoy. This is one of those places. Vegan, no vegan… gluten free, or not… this will be the best sushi you’ve had in your life. I recommend the colonels pipe and the candlestick. Also, if you’re looking for a more traditional take go for the Cali roll. None will disappoint. Thanks Shizen for your continued excellence displayed brilliantly with each roll.

Yummy yummy yummy, and it’s all Vegan. Be sure to make a reservation and pray that you would get one for the same week. Beautifully crafted food that tastes just as great! Perfect date night spot!

I'm not vegan, but I really enjoyed this. The use of ingredients is pretty innovative. The texture of the Bean curd in the katsu was tooth some. The eggplant grilled and then marinated and served cold may have been my favorite dish even though it was so simple. The specialty rolls also really blew me away. My only gripe would be the price. You're paying for the art, not the ingredients.

Finally, a sushi spot you can take your veg/vegan friends to and they'll be able to order the whole menu. Tomato and sweet tofu nigiri were tasty, pumpkin tempura roll also good. Construction of the nigiri could have been better, the rice fell apart a lot as you tried to eat it. But flavor wise great, I'd happily return.

I was wowed by the ingenuity of the sushi rolls here. They don’t try to replace the fish in sushi - instead, they let vegetables shine for themselves and play with colour, texture, and flavour. It was quite a memorable experience here! This is a sushi restaurant for everyone, not just those who are plant based. Be sure to make a reservation far in advance.

This place is definitely a must-try vegan sushi spot. Reservation is not required but highly recommended . It’s a nice little cozy place with delicious food and drinks. We liked almost everything we ordered. The service was quick and great. And the staff recommendations were lovely as well. I’m definitely going to return and I’ll bring along all the sushi fans!

My wife and I were unable to book a reservation during our short visit to SF, so instead we ordered a takeaway... We were not disappointed! The food was delicious and the presentation was outstanding. The unique flavours and textures really does put Shizen in a different league to vegan cuisine.

The wait for our first plate was a lengthy 40 minutes, which tested our patience. However, once the food arrived, it was clear that the wait had been worth it. The dishes were nothing short of amazing, showcasing inventive flavors and fresh ingredients. While the service was slow, the exceptional food ultimately made up for it, leaving me with a memorable dining experience.

I’m surprised how they pulled off the taste of sushi, still making it vegan. Kudos! Food is totally worth the price. Be prepared to wait for min of one plus hour if you don’t have a reservation. Friendly staff. Glad to stop by this place. Definitely recommend it.

So I asked a local travel group where I should eat that's vegan in san fransisco and this was the #1 suggested spot. You can only book a reservation 1 week in advance and the spots booked up right away, I was able to snag a Sunday at opening (4:30pm). We had a great seat right as you walk in the dinning room and ordered as soon as we could. We tried the garlic edammame, seaweed salad and the miso soup as the appetizers and for rolls we tried the boddy and soul and missing peice. The garlic edammame was amazing if you like garlic like I do, miso soup was boring..nothing special and the seaweed salad was great minus the cucumbers. The specialty rolls..... boddy and soul was insanely good! Perfect amount of spice and crunch...all in all probably the best roll I've ever tried in my life... as for the missing peice ...it was an experience but I probably would never order it again.... too many weird flavors in my mouth from the tomato and the pickled mango. The service was great and fast.. with tip we spent $85 for 2 rolls and 3 appetizers. I highly suggest this place if you're ever in san fransisco and book that reservation asap.

My wife and I recently dined at Shizen in San Francisco and had a delightful experience. It is a true heaven for vegetarians and vegans alike addressing a rarity in the culinary scene by offering exceptional vegan sushi. The recommended rolls, including the Candlestick, Boddy and Soul, and Hidden Agenda, were all exceptional. The Brussels sprouts appetizer was a tasty start, and the Blueberry Cheesecake ended the evening on a sweet note, truly out of this world. The thoughtful suggestions and diverse flavors made Shizen stand out, making it a must-visit for plant-based food enthusiasts. Highly recommend.

We’ve been willing to try Shizen for so long and we were not disappointed. Everything was amazing from the cocktails to every single roll. I recommend to pick several small plates, rolls and nigiri and share them. We got a few different rolls, they all were super tasty, flavourful. The texture of the agedashi tofu was fabulous and the tempuras were delicious. You need to book in advance and it can be hard to get a spot but it’s totally worth it. The staff was also super friendly and careful.

I thought it was…fine? After all the hype I was a little underwhelmed. We ordered some less popular menu items and, while I loved the drinks and the ambiance, and the service was fantastic, the food itself was just kind of…okay. No standout flavours, nothing memorable. I was a little disappointed to have spent $100 on a pretty okay dinner, honestly. I can see why vegan sushi is novel and exciting, and I like a lot of the concepts, but I don’t know that I’d go through all the trouble of securing a Saturday night reservation for this again.

Good food but not worth the price and definitely overhyped/overrated. The "boddy and soul" roll is delicious and was by far the best. I also liked "Prime Suspect". I didn't enjoy Foxy Scarlet and Secret Weapon, they didn't have as much flavor. A lot of the rolls were far too similar to each other. The gyoza and ceviche were good, just so bland. The yakisoba wasn't the best. Still, as far as rolls go, this is the most creative fully vegan sushi restaurant that I've found in Northern California which is probably why it's hard to get a table (reservations are definitely needed). Also I wish they had a dessert option.

If you are a sushi fan, no matter if you are vegan or not this place is must visit in Bay area! We went to have our Friday night dinner here and it was amazing. Appetizers : Gyoza - beautifully flavored and cooked to perfection Rolls: Surprise ending - it’s a fun dish especially for spice lovers, Spicy Tofuna roll , Proud Peacock. Looking forward to trying more dishes from their menu in future! PS : Prior reservations are required as this place gets quite busy.

You have to have reservations. It gets busy! We tried out a lot of different things. The karaage, the green mango onigiri and all the rolls were super delicious. The textures definitely make you second guess if there is no meat in it. The service was excellent as well. Will come back for more vegan sushi! 🍣 🍱

Made reservation day of! The place has a great atmosphere. The food was delicious and we ordered a variety! I ordered the ramen and the tofu had to be the best part! The drink I ordered is a sake base with strawberries and lychee, I liked that it wasn’t strong. I would recommend ordering the roulette sushi if you are dinning with a group. I am not vegan myself, but I almost forgot it was a vegan place.

The place is always busy - had to make a reservation two weeks in advance! But it was so worth it. They only allow you a 90 minute period to dine in and suggest you order your food as soon as you can. Everything had a beautiful presentation and tasted delicious. One of the best vegan places I've been too. Would highly recommend the brussel sprouts and singing telegram.

How did I not know about this place after living in SF for 7 years? 😵 I guess I never assumed vegan sushi could be any good (like what are they even made out of? 😄) We got a curry, 3 different rolls and some sake and everything was absolutely delicious. I truly believe I could have picked anything on the menu and it would have been fantastic. I think it was the first time in a long time I was actually impressed and fully satisfied at a restaurant 🌟 Even the presentation is beautiful and delicate. And you don’t have to be vegan to appreciate it!! However this place might convince you to become one 😉🥬 Pro tip: - Reservation is pretty much mandatory (I made mine a few days before). - The “surprise ending” is a fun one to try! 6 rolls but one of them is a spicy one…whoever gets it gets to drink the shot of sake in the center 🌶

Overall I would say it was a five star experience! Although I do believe there's some room for improvement. We got there without a reservation and they managed to accommodate us at the bar pretty quickly, and the service overall was really good. The food got to us fairly quickly, but they brought all the plates with around a 5 - 7 min interval, which didn't mattered much because we were sharing everything, but if you're ordering separate it might be a bit of an inconvenience. The flavors and options are great and the portions are very good as well. We were greatly satisfied with everything and would definetely go back next time in San Francisco!!

Best vegetarian restaurant in the Bay Area. Hands down. No contest. Sushi is superb. Get anything that has the slivered tomorrow, it is uncannily similar to fish. Great range of sushi and non sushi options. Beautiful setting. You can’t reserve so line up early.

Recommended for people who would like to try some Vegan Sushi. This is vegan restaurant, for sure not meat. However their sushi could taste like meat which is very surprise me. I m the person who don’t like raw food. Therefore, I could like to try nigiri from here with my friend who like nigiri. The service is great here. I feel welcome and friendly during the whole dining experience. Recommended to try! try! try! See pictures if you need some recommendations dishes.

Our flight was canceled in SF. As vegans who love sushi, it's amazing to find an all vegan restaurant. We set a reservation for 5pm and got there a little before they opened. We ordered 6 rolls between my wife and I (skipped lunch) so we could experience more of what they offered. All the rolls were excellent, and you could taste each ingredient and pairing nicely. We tried the surprise roll, and we were worried the beets were going to overpower the taste. It didn't, so it was a fun roulette game. Highly recommend!

We came here for my best friends birthday. She is vegan and this is her absolute favorite restaurant. I’m glad I tried it but I probably wouldn’t go again on my own. I don’t eat sea food so I don’t eat sushi so this was a fun spot to for both of us. The location is cute and small, the presentation of the food was impressive, the noise got LOUD and was slightly overwhelming at times. I think it’s a great spot for people that enjoy sushi and are vegan so I would recommend it to people to very certain people.

Our experience at Shizen was amazing. It was the first time I tried a vegan sushi bar and the sushis were fabulous. We ordered the following things: 1. Nameko Mushroom Miso Soup: The soup fell below our expectations. The miso’s flavour could be more powerful. We could taste the water and honestly, were disappointed with the flavour as the miso was really diluted. The soup could taste way better if there was more flavour of Miso. 2. Secret Weapon: We loved this sushi. The spicy shredded tofu and the habanero sauce added a kick. After a point my lips were burning because of the spicy-ness of the habanero sauce but I was low-key loving it. Just an advise for people who don’t like spicy food that much - please don’t let the habanero touch your lips first 😂 3. Missing Piece: We really liked this sushi roll as well. I really like soy sauce so I dipped the sushi in it, just to realise that the soy sauce had way too much sodium. Would recommend if they could keep a less sodium version of the soy sauce. The ginger shavings were really nice and helped to bring out the flavour of the sushi more. 4. Boddy and Soul: This was the star highlight of our evening. An absolute burst of flavours. We could not stop making noises while eating this sushi roll. The tempura crunch was just straight outta heaven. It did not need any add ons. It was simply amazing and we are coming to this restaurant just to eat this roll again. All in all, it was a great experience and we will definitely be visiting soon to try other things on the menu. Personally found it expensive (spent $85 between 2 people with tip for 3 specialty sushi rolls + the soup) but the taste makes up for it, I guess.

Our 3rd time here and Shizen is brilliant. An incredibly unique and delicious vegan menu paired with fantastic service means this place hits all the marks. Definitely recommend getting reservations ahead of time and be aware that they have a 90 minute dining limit. They were very very accommodating and patient with us and made our entire dining experience great

I told my husband I could die now because I just ate the best meal off life!!! I was completely blown away by this place—the ambiance- the service, and of course the food l. It was like eating art. Everything on the menu sounded amazing and it truly was. I wish I had 10 people with us to order everything on it. If you are in the area, you need to eat here. Unlike anything I have ever tried!

Gorgeous vegan food, we tried so many different things and enjoyed every single one. My favourite was the Karaage starter. It's a really popular busy place so be sure to book a table as soon as possible (it looks to book out a week or a few days in advance)

An absolutely amazing sushi experience for a vegetarian. The service was amazing and food was quick to arrive despite the place being seemingly packed. My only gripe would be trying to get a reservation for the place is hard. The food however makes up for all of it. We had the Boddy & Soul, Colonel’s Pipe and the Candlestick. I highly suggest getting the special rolls alone since they tend to be quite heavy (in a good way) and provide the most unique flavours. Must not miss for a vegetarian/vegan sushi extravaganza.

  • 5/5 Varuni Shama R. 1 year ago on Google
This is our compulsory “once a month” place. Having so many vegan options is pure bliss. Food is super creative and also extremely delicious. Have tried almost everything on the specialty list and haven’t found single item that I wouldn’t have again. Everyone who visits SFO must visit this place. Highly recommended! You will enjoy the ambience and have a great time. You need to book a table in advance and they have tables only for 2 or 4. In case you want to try for a walk-in, call ahead to check your chances and reserve.

Great place for vegetarian/vegan sushi. The food: Being a vegetarian, my options for sushi have always been very limited. I was on the hunt for a vegan japanese place and this was a great find. We went with the specialty sushi after reading other reviews and tried the following - Body and Soul - Hidden Agenda - Open invitation The Body and Soul sushi was so far, my favorite. It tasted best when I had it with the condiments provided. Other aspects: - The service was good and although getting a reservation was hard, it was worth trying. They have a 90 limit policy, so I would recommend ordering all items at once rather than like us, ordering one item after the other. We had to wait quite a long time for our third item and kept getting stared at by some of the waiters while waiting for our dish. It was not exactly comfortable. - Parking can be a huge pain as it is near impossible to find street parking here and the parking lot nearby charges like 30 dollars for the whole evening and closes at 10pm. We went more than half an hour before and were unable to find street parking.

  • 5/5 David L. 6 months ago on Google
Great meal overall! Ordered three specialty rolls for two people and left sated. Got walk-in seats at the sushi bar right at opening on a Saturday afternoon and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. FWIW, my partner and I are both omnivores, but frequently prepare vegetarian and vegan meals at home. Prime Suspect - 5/5, wonderfully layered umami, fun textural contrast with three crispy elements, our personal favorite (and our server's too!) Secret Weapon - 5/5, sweet and spicy, the pineapple and jalapeno really make it sing! Surprise Ending - 4/5, fun roulette concept, but a little one-note due to how beet-forward it is (and we love beets!)

  • 5/5 Andrés C. 7 months ago on Google
Fantastic interior design & the food is even better! Get the Surprise Ending if you’re looking for a fun group eating experience. Also had the matcha ice cream for dessert, it was made with coconut but wasn’t gritty or too coconut-focused in flavor, it was fantastic!

Loved this place pre-covid. Their pickup system is a total mess and the wait times on the side walk feel risky. Everyone has to crowd around the door to hear their names called. Waited 30 minutes after they said the food would be ready. Not eating here again. Its too expensive for such chaos.

  • 5/5 Jacob B. 4 years ago on Google
Totally worth being on the waitlist. Everything I ordered was so good. My favorite was the Secret Weapon special roll. The brussel sprouts and bean curd were also amazing. The best sushi I've had.

The concept of vegan sushi seems like an oxymoron but this small restaurant makes it happen. It is admirable that the owners created the cuisine to promote sustainability. Beyond that, the dishes themselves are nothing short of remarkable. If you are a sushi fan, you’ll find it hard to believe there is no fish in these little gems. If sushi is not your thing, the vegan variety may well make you a fan. Give it a try... you won’t be disappointed. Be sure to make a reservation!

This place is phenomenal and one of the best restaurants in San Francisco. I'd rate it higher than even some Michelin star places. There's typically a long wait but it is worth it. If you find yourself waiting a bit, I'd also highly recommend the kinky bar a few blocks away (The Armory Club) ;-)

Holy smokes. So good. We were lucky that we got here early (around 4:40 on a Sunday). There was a line of 20 people already! We made the first seating , which is great. We ordered a variety of dishes and the service was amazing. The tempura is fantastic. Lightly battered and super crispy! My favourite roll is the boddy and soul roll. The Scarlet Smile roll was great too. And the gyozas..yummm. So everything was pretty much amazing.

My first impressions before I went was that it was whatevers... I mean it's just hand rolls... how good can it be... well I was wrong! The warm rice was a really nice touch and the fact that it was freshly made was amazing. I would highly recommend going for the 5 roll menu because it comes with the scallops which is awesome smooth texture. there's often a line so take that into account.

This is probably my favorite place to eat in the states. It's really that good. Highly recommend at least one of their special rolls (body and soul is incredible). I don’t know what I can say that the previous 1500 reviews did not. It’s good, vegan, tasty, creative! My only down side is the wait. The seats also are not very comfortable, I am guessing it is to help with the wait? Also the ceiling lights are pretty aggressive.

Wow. I'm not vegan and I enjoyed this place as much as I enjoyed any other fancy sushi place. The grilled mushrooms were crazy. The sushi was amazing as well. Come early, sign up in the waiting list, have a drink somewhere else near by and come back.

Wow, if you're trying to get any vegetarian/vegan to move to the city, take them here. The texture and flavors were out of this world, and I can never go back to just avocado rolls. Great ambiance and vibe too. I'm definitely coming back! If that didn't convince you, this is my first review.

Waited in like for 30 minutes before opening and it was so worth it! This sushi is absolutely next level with its innovation and flavors. You absolutely will not miss the fish. I was and still am thoroughly impressed. The wait staff is also very friendly and attentive. Our waitress was able to anticipate our needs and could tell my friend and I were in a rush and advised us what we could order that would be ready the quickest. I highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely return myself if ever in SF again.

The best vegan sushi I ever had. 4 stars just cause they dont take reservations and their waitlist is too long. Last time we joined the waitlist at 7pm, got to sit at 10pm and immediately were told to order everything cause the kitchen was closing... they should definitely respect their customers better.

I showed up as the doors opened. There was a super long line but it didn't last 1 minute. Everyone got seats and ordered right away and everything flowed like fresh almond milk. I ordered a few unique spicy rolls and was blown out of this world!!! After I returned to this world, I tried the ramen and is was great consistency and the topping flavors were fantastic but the broth flavor was slightly lacking. Overall fives star experience.

Wow. You have no idea that there is no actual fish in this sushi. I found it to be more filling and just as delicious as regular sushi if not mind blowing. Do not hesitate!!! You will not regret going here. 5 stars

Body and Soul roll, stuffed mushrooms, and gyoza were all great. The other two rolls were alright (I forget the names). Overall awesome spot with great decor.

Amazing every time. The curry and sushi are incredible and I also love starting with a mushroom miso soup. If you like spicy food, the secret weapon roll seriously packs some heat.

Such a creative vegan / veg menu, packed full of flavor. Plot Twist, Open Invitation, and Body & Soul are our favorite specialty rolls. The wait can be long, but it's worth it. Pro Tip: you can make reservations on Yelp, but only after 5:30p.

I was so pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this place! I didn't really believe vegan sushi would be done well, but Shizen proved me wrong. They don't try to imitate seafood flavors through their dishes, but instead come up with totally new flavor combinations. I really enjoyed their Open Invitation (pumpkin tempura) roll, and my boyfriend is a fan of the corn and avocado nigiris. Parking around the area can be a bit tricky. I'd take an Uber if possible. You'll have to line up before opening if you want to get a decent place in line, because the spots fill up fast! I arrived about 10 minutes after opening on a Saturday night and there was already a line out the door just to put a name down. We ended up being seated around 6:30. When we came back, we noticed that they had put up a sign stating that they were fully booked for the rest of the night. They keep track of the line through yelp, so you are able to put your name + number down and they will notify you when its time for you to check back in with the host.
