Cannot say enough good things about our afternoon tea experience here! Very attentive staff and creative accompaniments for the tea. The aged peony white tea was something I’ve never had before and therefore felt was quite memorable! The hibiscus tea was flavorful as well! The space is absolutely beautiful and the lobby of the Proper hotel in which the restaurant is located is equally a nice space to look around. Just a few hours here felt like a mini vacation! Great job to everyone on the staff!

Perfect for a romantic afternoon tea. Modern urban interior, knowledgeable staff, high quality tea selection and fantastic scones. $45/person was worth it. The black tea was awesome. The smoked salmon sandwich was the best by far. Great for a date, first or otherwise - if in a date, you may want to combine it with the rooftop bar on top! Book in advance and only available on the weekend. Attire smart casual. NOTE: it's super hard to find parking around the area so give it 10-15 minutes unless you want to use the vallet.

Great New American food, deep classic cocktail list, varied wine, and VERY attentive service! When you sit down to a coupe glass, rather than a wine glass, you know you should start with a cocktail. Among the 49 options (by BV Hospitality, of Trick Dog), the martini is an elegant (and strong!) option. The Chef’s Menu is a great value ($85 for 6 courses), and there are several flashy options for two that are finished at the table – great for a date night! When I went, this included a disappointingly doughy steamed bun, but also a rich, smokey abalone, asparagus on strong cheese, and sauced duck. The wine menu is also notable – lots of interesting choices by the glass around $20, including less common varietals such as Dolcetto, Vermentino, and even a Croatian wine, to say nothing of the wine pairing! On my visit, as a solo diner, I was also comped two glasses of wine and an extra dessert! There's also afternoon tea, which was popular on a Saturday afternoon. The menu, both food and beverages, is certainly deep enough to warrant repeat visits – a local gem!

One of the few remaining affordable options for afternoon tea in the city. We booked on OpenTable and requested a table in their main blue dining room. For teas, we selected the Aged White Peony (a pleasant white tea) and Chai Assam. The Chai Assam was unfortunately completely undrinkable due to its high concentration of black pepper. They did not initially provide any milk, cream, or sugar, however, even after requesting and adding cream, the tea did not improve. After calling over the waitstaff again, we were quickly able to replace it with the Golden Horse, which was excellent! Also great to have a tea strainer to catch any errant tea leaves. We received 4 sandwiches, a scone, cream puff, Madeleine, snowball, apple cinnamon donut hole, macaron, and rainbow cake. The salmon sandwich was our favorite along with the cream puff and rainbow cake. Lovely ambiance and beautiful decor throughout. Waitstaff were friendly and came by frequently to refill water for our tea. Unfortunately, the hotel's in a bit of a rough neighborhood, so I'd recommend parking in a secured parking garage or using Uber/Lyft. We'd also been hoping to visit their rooftop bar, Charmaine's, as walk-ins to avoid their non-refundable reservation fee. I'd been pre-pandemic and really enjoyed their drinks and view. Unfortunately we waited in line for about 30 minutes as the 4th or 5th group in line, confirmed with the staff at the front twice that we were there as walk-ins, and then were told when we reached the front that they were not accepting walk-ins. So you'll need to shell out the $5/person reservation fee if you'd like to visit on the weekend.

I brought my niece here for her birthday based on the pictures and reviews. First, this inside a hotel, which is okay. Second the food was below average. It was okay in presentation, well only one was. They lacked flavor on so many levels. The pictures I took are not worth posting. I wish I had cooked for her at home it would have been delicious. Some of the staff were okay but overall creepy and not very approachable. $22 for a waffle with sliced apples, it was a joke, I could not believe the lack of flavor, I was so disappointed in myself for ordering that. People need to start writing real reviews, or is it majority of people eat bland foods?! Our food was also cold, the juice I ordered was $12 but it came in a bottle, not even fresh.

Exquisite- one of the best meals of my life. We were speechless about the mushroom appetizer. VILLON is absolute perfection- from stunning architectural scale of the lobby, to soothing dark tones of restaurant, and sparkly highlights of the dramatic bar. Service was impeccable - everyone. Food was exquisite. The Chef is brilliant… and has PERFECTED the art of delicate crisp to the (GF!) tempura mushroom appetizer, as well as the skin of the chicken and fish entrees. FLAVORS and TEXTURES were magnificent. The entire experience was subtle, yet extraordinary FEAST for the eyes and palate — an absolutely perfect meal before a show at the Orpheum in SF! Wow. Words don’t come close.

This was my first tea experience in America, and it was awesome; prior to this, I had only had tea in London and France so as you can see the expectations were set pretty high. First off, the hotel that Villon is located is gorgeous. Loved the vintage décor, the bar was really nice and the hotel itself was centrally located. The tea experience itself was wonderful. They have it from 2-5pm just outside the restaurant. The tea sandwiches and pastries were delish and of good quality, tea selection was nice and the ambiance a delight, however I would say the only thing that took away from the tea ‘experience’ is that they mixed it with other patrons having just a drink and/or lunch. I would’ve much preferred have all those doing tea in one area bc it just takes away from the ‘tea’ ambiance. Other than that, everything was great. Oh, service was also awesome; everyone was attentive to our needs.

We had an amazing pre-theater dinner here. The combinations of flavors were outstanding starting with the chef's complimentary nibble. Cocktails were also deliciously and carefully crafted.

Afternoon tea between 2-5pm Saturday & Sunday is very refreshing! It’s $45 per person and has a full set of sweets with it. The furnishings of the proper hotel are exquisite. 👌🫖

Upstairs rooftop bar is fully booked but hey, this bar turned out to be pretty good! Beautiful bar and good cocktails. Very comfy settings. We had whiskey sour, Champaign, and French fries. Solid! Good for business casual meetings or dates

James provided impeccable service and had a sincerely pleasant demeanor that made our experience that much more memorable. The uni on toast was to die for, soo buttery and rich! The oysters selected was soo fresh. We also visited the rooftop bar that James graciously escorted us to.

One of the best meals we've had here. The service is impeccable and the ambiance for dinner was romantic but lively. Believe it or not, the salads were a highlight! Fresh and inventive ingredients, like ice cream on one of them, wow! The entrees were steak and pork katsu, both dishes completely unique in flavors but both were delicious and perfectly filling. The desserts, a baked Alaska and an apple cake were the best way to end this amazing meal. Will definitely be back.

I am almost never motivated to leave a review but the food was excellent. Everything in the plate looked and was delicious (ordered the Halibut) - not.a.missed.beat to be found! The oysters were also a big highlight.

Food was ok but was disappointed as we were leaving. A waiter who HAD NOT waited on us AT ALL followed me while I was getting my jacket to ask if we had paid for our meal. I informed him we did. As I'm walking through the lobby I hear him yelling trying to get my attention. Again confronting me about a bill we already paid for. I'm assuming the manager followed behind to see what was the commotion. I explained the waiter is harassing us for a bill we indeed paid for. I followed them both in found our actual waitress who confirmed we did pay in cash. Instead of the waiter apologizing he then continued with a non apology stating they had issues last year. Found it interesting he only followed us out but no one else. I'll let you put two & two together. Wanted to try going out for Thanksgiving dinner for the first time and probably never will again after the experience. The food was average , definitely not worthy of the pricing and the service was subpar prior to the stereotyping.

Food delicious. Hotel stylish, cool. The actual restaurant is smaller than expected, off the lobby. Minus star for downtown SF. Not the hotel's fault, yet getting to, and leaving in that area deeply sad, dirty. You should visit, and support a business trying to turn around downtown. Travel in pairs+.
