This is hands-down the Worst VA in California. This place does NOT provide optimum services for veterans at all. Dont expects great bedside manners, hospitality, dedication, or anything associated with high-quality service. Upon entry, you'll have to wait in a Covid Screening Line, where you shall encounter some extremely ghetto, uncouth, poorly-dressed, possibly gang-affiliated, incompetent security guards. Their jobs are quite simple: greet us, write down our information, ask us screening questions, give us masks (if needed), direct us to the hand sanitizer, and send us on our way. They'll more than likely get the latter three correct, and the former wrong. There's one security guard that had the audacity to yell at me on my first visit at this campus, because I didn't initially understand the procedure. No one cared! Theres also a husky security guard with short and stuby dreadlocks there, that refuses to write legibly or spell me name correctly (despite me showing him my ID). It's not that these security guards aren't doing their best, because they unfortunately are. It's that this particular VA isn't buying the best third-party security company that they can afford. They're paying for the bare-minimum, which results in bare-minimum performances. It's all downhill from there. Many of the doctors are just as tacky, and just as incompetent as the security guards. They also don't behave like traditional healers. They more than likely see us as a task to cross off of their lists, and NOT a patient that needs healing. My primary care Nurse Practitioners is a prime example of this. He was so lazy, green, and not invested in my health that he tried giving my acupuncture for my shoulder; when in reality, I needed a labrum surgery for a tear in my labrum. Had I NOT stayed on his case, I would've never received a consultation for the Orthopedic. I'll be getting him to release me to another PCP soon. Many of the veterans are drug addicts, homeless, elderly, or veterans that were recently approved for health benefits; so they more than likely don't know what good service is. I strongly loathe Los Angeles County and nearly every city that it encompasses. However, one of the many things that County got right was the VA facilities and its treatment of the Veterans. Overall, this place is dirty, ghetto, reckless, and it lacks hospitality. You'll sooner feel like a prisoner than you will a patient. Be aware of this! ALL VETERANS DESERVE THE BEST SERVICE POSSIBLE.

Arrived during Covid19 and the staff were helpful interviewing and since I was being admitted, I needed and got a Covid19 test. Negative thank you. Admission was extremely helpful walking me to the various sites that I needed to go to. The nurses that attended to me were fantastic. Always a positive attitude, even when faced with some extremely difficult patients. All my nursing staff were excellent in their jobs and were polite and funny carring out my needs. The Doctors were understanding and explained in ways that I understood what i was going through. The surgery staff was both friendly and supportive. I am very appreciative of the services that the staff of all the Veterans Hospitals and Clinics that I have been a patient. Thank you so much for all that you do and carring it out in a friendly and knowledgeable way.

I wasn’t impressed one bit. The drive down from Santa Rosa was nice and long. Loved the scenery though. Well, I got to the Hospital and was already overwhelmed with all the cars and congested roadways with parked cars and movement of people walking all over the property of the hospital. I was lost had no idea where bldg. 200 was where my ct scan was. I called the hospital for assistance and spoke with the operator who flat out told me she couldn’t help me before I could finish my question on getting help. Well, I drove to the parking garage and asked the valet who kindly told me if I parked here the building and ct area is across the way. As I walked in the hospital I was greeted by two Enormous security guards who were friendly as can be. The lady was helpful when checking me in. I went to where CT scan was . There was a lady behind a glass window. Who appeared two busy to help me. I thought I was in the Philadelphia VA. She finally checked me in and then walked away. Came around the corner and said come with me. I go where a tow of chairs were in the hallway. Say there for 15 minutes and noticed a man in a wheelchair looking for help. Stopped at the Coordinators office where the door was half open and he knocked and no one answered. Yes there was a individual in there man/lady couldn’t tell. He slowly wheeled himself in and the individual walked out to explain. “Read the Sign First before you enter” knock” I kindly told the Individual he did and waited and knocked again. Rudely I was told to mind my own business. I stood up and said no one talks to me like that and treats patients rude. Well, I sat back down. The ct tech came and got me. Wasn’t very sociable. Walked in the ct scan. It looked like someone was laying where I was told to lay. The sheet and pillow wasn’t changed. I asked if the radiation would effect me in anyway since I have titanium brackets in my face. The tech didn’t answer my question. Instead, replied if I feel unsafe I could go. I thought wasn’t rude. I was scared. I got the scan done. Not a very good experience. I hope it gets better?

Y'all really need to break up whatever is going on at the front door security set up. I mean wow, this is not the county jail or some homeless shelter. I realize these people need jobs but at least put some body down there that has some communication skill at all. Do you really think that ghetto fear mentality is appropriate for this place? I didn't think so. Fix it. Maybe hire a veteran or two.....?

I have never had anything bad to say about the San Francisco VA Medical Center. I am now a patient after having back surgery one week ago. I have had nothing fit for a human or a pig since I have been here. The food is an INSULT. Even though I have had meetings with the dietitian almost every day I am being served exactly the food that I have said that I will not or CANNOT eat! I have been dehydrated since my surgery. I can't believe how badly I have been treated or the disrespect I have been subjected to. It hurts me to have to write this. I have been a patient here since 1988 and this is the first time I have had this kind of problem. I will be taking this up with my congressman at the earliest opportunity. I am not alone in my contemp for food service here. This is a systematic failure of the administration of the hospital. Hope that this may trigger change and I can change my disappointment.

San Francisco VA, located in the heart of one of the most vibrant cities in the United States, is an excellent choice for veterans seeking quality healthcare in a beautiful setting. Situated in San Francisco, California, this VA facility offers a unique advantage with its proximity to stunning natural landscapes and incredible hiking opportunities. The location of San Francisco VA is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts. Within a short distance, veterans can explore iconic hiking trails like the Lands End Coastal Trail, which offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge. The nearby Golden Gate Park provides a serene escape from the urban bustle, boasting numerous walking paths, gardens, and hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Additionally, the Presidio of San Francisco offers a vast expanse of forests and trails where veterans can immerse themselves in nature. San Francisco VA's strategic location also enables veterans to easily access a wide range of amenities and attractions. The city is renowned for its diverse culinary scene, world-class museums, and iconic landmarks like Alcatraz Island and Fisherman's Wharf. Overall, San Francisco VA not only provides top-notch medical care but also allows veterans to enjoy the unparalleled beauty of the region and indulge in invigorating hiking experiences. It's an ideal combination for those seeking comprehensive healthcare services in a prime location that caters to their love for nature and adventure.

It's nearly impossible to get an appointment here and nearly impossible to get referred to community care even though they have no appointments available. I have wasted so many hours on hold with this VA or waiting to be called back (they never call back) and still can't access basic care. This is one of the worst VAs I've been to in that regard.

The absolute worst employer and care provider ever. The union picks who they wish to help. If your not 'in' with management they will take advantage of the system to make you quit. Care has been withheld from Vets. Hospital as a whole thinks mental health is a joke and they will withhold care. Do not expect to get care here. Try another facility. If you must seek care here, be mindful this is a govt run facility, they don't have to care. Try and be patient with the rude guards and lazy staff, they do have rules they must follow. But, at the end of the day their here for a check not to make Vets feel safe, and cared for. There are people who are here to help Vets, but a lot of those folks are retiring or have moved on to other agency's because the overall environment is just that bad.

I brought my elderly father here for an MRI. They did not tell us only one person could go in with my dad. So I waited outside but had to use the restroom. I was given a piece of paper and told to go across to the other building to use the restroom. When I got there the woman screening at the door told me to go back to the other building. I explained that I had dropped my dad off and just needed to use the restroom. She pointed me in the direction of the restroom. I stood waiting against the wall because housekeeping was cleaning it and had it blocked off. The screener came back to see what I was doing and the when she realized what was going on she directed me to sit in a chair by the door. She then stood against the wall the entire time I was there. The bathroom was finally clean and I went in to use it. This woman literally stood outside the bathroom door the entire time I was there. What did she think I was going to do? If her intention was to make me feel like a criminal for using the bathroom, she did her job. Unbelievable treatment of a veteran. Not only is my dad a veteran but so am I. San Francisco VA facility thank you for making me feel so appreciated (sarcasm here).

Been coming here for 20 years. I have been treated at several other VA facilities and the SF VA is by far my top choice. Yes the VA system as a whole has issues but the individual care here is the best.

Nearly killed me and fought me non-stop as I started my rehabilitation. A truly horrible experience that honestly hasn't improved. Though there are good people there. Edit: Back when Dr. Nichols was *in charge* she once sent me a message as I waited In her office lobby, that if she were to see me in person, that she would have to see other Veterans. Apparently she suggested through her staff, that I attend the weekly first floor muster to discuss my issues/situation/problems in an open audience. Privacy anyone? Why would anyone do that? She should as a component of her position speak personally to Veterans weekly, in my simple opinion. This new one is of the same calibre.

Five stars for the clinical help you get, (if you can get it). As with most va situations…. The care is as good as any situation. Doctors and nurses genuinely want to care for folks. Community care here is as bad as the DMV. The administration side seems to be intended to make access to healthcare as difficult and as frustrating as possible. I can say from personal experience that veterans are likely to stop trying to get care and push off there own care because the administration for VA healthcare is so frustrating. There is never a responsible person when something goes wrong. There is seemingly no way to fix the VA system, despite throwing millions and millions of dollars at the system. The most basic first steps of helping veterans are simply botched. Amazingly, the actual clinicians are great! Most administrative staff seem to actively engage in making access difficult or impossible. I would love to see the VA be dissolved and care privatized. Anything would be better for veterans than this administration disaster.

I was a patient at Ft Miley for 20 years 1995-2015. The care received was the best, top quality. I acknowledge and thank God, for his love, grace, mercy, and divine Word of protection, for keeping me from death! Dr. Tierney was a Godsend to manage my care and act as my PCP. Other than his advanced medical skill and knowledge, the blessing that made the difference is that he cared for the patient, the Vet; me! He listened. No system is perfect, but my experience was a blessing. I experienced near death numerous times, but God, and Dr. T's intervention enabled me to be, and say thank you Ft. Miley, and USF Medical Coronary Staff. Many times we expect man and his technology to perform miracles; but too often forget it is God, Elohim that created the heavens and the earth, and made man and woman and breathed life into him. God thank you!

The VA in general seems to catch a lot of flack for not being the best health care, but from my personal experience with my father having a brain tumor currently, and needing immediate treatment the VA in Sacramento(where we started) and in the San Francisco location has been phenomenal. The staff and doctors in the Sacramento ER were courteous, professional, and all around just great. We brought him into the Sacramento VA 2 nights ago and that night they got him in an ambulance and sent to San Franciso to see a neurologist so that they could treat the tumor. The 1st day he was in San Francisco he met with a team of neurologist and the next day a cardic team and internal medicine team. They have been very fortcoming with information and treatment plans and super compassionate. The other private ER we went basically told us we need to go somewhere else since we'd have to pay cash for any treatment. I am very confident in the quality of care and treatment he will be getting from the VA. I appreciate all the staff here and am so thankful he is around people thay seem to care a great deal about him.

So many veterans die from improper care and this is the type of facility that contributes to that. It doesn’t matter what your ailment is, broken foot, jaundiced skin, or breathing issues with a harsh cough, they will say you’re fine and send you home. My last visit doctors they diagnose me with an anxiety disorder, which is the modern day equivalent of “hysteria”. It’s disappointing because the doctor, Namrata Garg, and her attending doctor, John Penner, are so young, which means they’ll be mistreating patients for years to come. Later in the day, my friends used an EPIPEN on me and then drove me to another hospital where I was properly treated.

My husband just had a pacemaker installed at this hospital. He arrived by ambulance from Mather and my stepson and I drove down for the surgery and to take him home after recovery. Without exception, everyone we encountered was kind, informative, and helpful. When we arrived, my husband’s nurse walked us through (by phone) where to check in and how to locate my husband’s room. The place is huge, so we routinely found ourselves lost. Someone always walked up to us and provided directions, often walking with us to lead the way. I received three calls after the surgery - two from his doctors and one from his nurse informing me of the details of his surgery and steps for the coming weeks. The pharmacist in residence delivered medication and reviewed all precautions and contraindications. His recovery nurse was exceptional- patient and attuned to my husband’s needs. The grounds outside provide lots of opportunities for walking or taking in the ocean views.

If you are not a veteran yourself who personally tried to receive care do not comment!!! VA is federal government. Having its own agenda. Veterans do not have The Choice to get healthcare outside the VA try care is not accepted unless contracted with the VA. All the little programs that are in play it's all bs. I was a legal administrative specialist as well. There are pre written scripts for everything. From the operator, all the way to my position that I held.... even to the one scheduling appointments.... There is a script that has to be read, all computers are monitored all phone conversations are reported. You will be fired. This is the main reason you do not get good care at VA. Any entry level GS5 digital 6 position will not you close to 25 plus dollars an hour with Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance. The employees are there for their paycheck and their benefits it is a job.

Worst care a veteran can get with a Healthcare system that take no accountability for there 2001 diagnosis that lead to irreparable deadly bodily harm. They only care about making money for the University of California, pathetically using mental health as there swear under rug medical incompetence.

Veterans Administration Hospital... Been on the point at Land's End for a long time... Predates WW2. One of the best cardio units in VA in CA. Parking can be challenging, Busses run regular stops and are easy to access Handicap accessibility is at Maximum levels. Still as of 12/15/22 require masks Any smoking, vaping or weapons are strictly prohibited. Added reminder, entry consents to search without due process, so DON'T bring anything that could result in arrest or explusion. It is FEDERAL PROPERTY... act accordingly.

This medical center has doctors who fabricate and falsify medical information and medical diagnosis. But at this facility some doctors have caused intentional injury. It is common for doctors to repeatedly deny a medical condition. The lab is staffed by less than competent staff who cannot do basic bloodwork. It is one of several facilities where doctors have falsified medical records for veterans; there have been various doctors or medical staff who worked at VA Medical Centers who have been arrested or reported to the Medical Board for these crimes as reported in the media.
