This is really nice and super clean beach. The best thing about it is you can do a bonfire on the beach. Usually it is crowded but you can definitely find spot there. I have been there multiple times with my friends mostly late night. Its very safe as well. The water is very cold though so one might not be able to go into it. And its always very windy so do carry light jacket.

Day or night Ocean Beach is a great spot for a time out, for digging your toes in the sand, or a splash in the waves. On busy sunny days it can be a challenge finding parking, but even on the busiest days it's chill vibes + a huge stretch of beach & sand for the masses to enjoy! I used to bonfire here with friends all the time as a young adult. The fire pits that have been added since are a nice, needed touch.

This is a nice place for walks along the beach. You will find many activities along Ocean Beach including wind surfing, stand up paddle boarding, dog walking, and the occasional camping. While I have seen people go in for a swim with trunks, I do not recommend swimming as the water is usually pretty cold. All surfers I have seen use body suits. The location has seasonal fire pits and dogs are allowed to be off leash. Overall, this is a fun family friendly beach to experience while visiting San Francisco, the city by the bay.

Such a beautiful location. The sunset was nice to watch. The waves were soothing & peaceful. So many doggos to see & admire. The sand is so nice & there is plenty of space so one doesn't feel crowded. I did go on a monday so maybe that's why there's weren't many people. Everyone kept distance & respected space. That's very important these pandemic days. If you plan on visiting keep safe & clean. Talking about cleaning the beach is very clean, I saw no big trash. The only things I saw were two straws & one cigarette bud. Those were picked up & disposed of properly. I gave nothing but good thoughts of this beach. I highly recommend visiting when it is safe to do so.

Great place to hang out, just make sure that it isn’t a windy day to go out. The beach turns into a sandstorm.

Beautiful, picturesque beach, set up for fire pits.. easily accessible from parking lot. What more could you ask for?

Ocean beach is a wonderful beach however there can be so much trash and it is not patrolled! A group of teenagers were drinking like crazy, first fighting and left at least 3 trash bags of garbage behind. Real shame as most will end up in the ocean.

Beautiful spot to go for an evening walk. The sun sets to the west so it’s perfect for this beach. Walk down to the more southern part of the beach and there becomes less and less people it seems. Although the top end isn’t too busy either, so if you don’t mind people then you don’t have to walk as far! There are some dunes about quarter of a mile down from the Safeway which was a good place to sit. Lots of dog walkers on the each so if you have a fear of dogs you probably shouldn’t go, or if your dog doesn’t like other dogs I would recommend somewhere else!

When the tide is out, the wide expanse of sand between the cliff and the water allows for ample social distancing. This is a very good thing. For some strange "reason" there are still unaware people who, despite multiple alternative pathways, will CHOOSE to come directly toward someone who is intentionally staying a socially distanced out of the way. There are areas more prone to congestion than others, especially when a juvenile sports team suddenly appears, fortunately wearing masks. The colder the day the better for fewer people to encounter and avoid. ¡Las Ondas, Las Ondas! Magnifico, simplemente magnifico... Expect large numbers of sunset watchers.

Great, albeit very cold, place to hang out during and after sunset. Did I mention that it’s cold? On a warmer night, bring layers and plenty of wood, and libations - if you partake.

San Francisco Ocean Beach is a captivating coastal gem stretching along the western edge of San Francisco, California. This picturesque beach extends for approximately 3.5 miles, offering a breathtaking expanse of sandy shores and mesmerizing ocean views. Nestled between the vast Pacific Ocean and the magnificent dunes of the Outer Sunset neighborhood, Ocean Beach beckons both locals and tourists alike. Visitors can relish invigorating walks, basking in the crisp sea air, and witnessing awe-inspiring sunsets that paint the sky with vibrant hues. Ocean Beach is a haven for surfers, attracting wave-riders from all skill levels. The consistent swell and impressive surf breaks make it an ideal destination for those seeking thrilling water adventures. However, its powerful undertows and chilly waters require caution and respect for the ocean's power. Nature enthusiasts revel in the beach's diverse wildlife, with seabirds soaring overhead and the occasional glimpse of marine life in the waves. The nearby Golden Gate Park offers an excellent opportunity for a seamless transition from the beach to a verdant urban oasis. Whether one seeks relaxation, adventure, or simply a chance to connect with nature, San Francisco Ocean Beach fulfills all desires. With its vastness and untamed beauty, this coastal paradise stands as a beloved destination where the rhythmic sounds of crashing waves create a symphony of serenity and wonder.

So, this is the edge of the USA. There are thousands of miles of the deep Pacific to the next continent. Beautiful sunset. Roaring ocean. Huge beach. Very crowded on weekends.

A nice size beach, the charcoal is not my favorite part. Volunteers were cleaning the beach while we were there, keep up the great work 👍 besides the black dust, clean beach .

Free bonfire locations right on the ocean. If you get here early enough you can grab one of these spots and spend your time hanging out the whole evening on the beach with a fire. It's a really cool way to spend a sunset in the city and I recommend bringing s'mores or marshmallows!

This beach is one of a kind. Something about the rush of people to get there in time for the sunset, makes it so endearing. Such a beautiful place to experience spirituality!

Beautiful beach to spend time with. So many dogs around, that makes it even more special. I think this might be favourite view point of the ocean beach as you can see the cliff from here too. It is kept clean as well and not many animal or bird carcasses would be lying around compared to other places of ocean beach.

Such a great time at the fire pits. If you don’t see an open space you can dig a space in the sand within the fire parameters. On a non foggy day the sunset is gorgeous. Free parking as well

Nice enough. Cool spot for locals, it seems like a hangout area. Or was cold when I went and there were still people out. Pretty cool except no restrooms or showers. Lots of parking

Very relaxing. With a restaurant across the street. Public bathroom a plus across the street as well so that's a plus if you have kids.

So much fun! Very easy to set up a fire and hang out. The sunset was very beautiful. If you want to get a fire pit, arrive around 2 hours beforehand. If not, many people dug one out in the sand.

Don’t go on a super windy day, but really large and very beautiful especially when you consider that you are in the center of the city.

I love Ocean Beach!! It's got a huge, open parking lot that can get hectic during the summer but it almost feels like a giant tailgate party. Not everyone is drinking but there is a lot of partying that happens at the fire pits on the rare, warm days in SF. The view of the ocean is amazing no matter where you're situated, car or beach. There are trash cans all along the paved pathway but not everyone throws away their bon fire trash ??‍♀️ overall, fairly clean beach that's fun to walk on, picnic on, or just sit and look at.

Not enough pits and not well maintained. If you can get one, then its a nice place to have a hangout with friends!

Great place to walk no matter the weather. Plenty free parking spots. They even have portable potty services now. Our hard earned tax dollars well spent IMHO. For the fire pits, please do not bring/burn Duraflame in these fire pits. They are made out of chemicals and your food and/or airspace will be filled with a burning chemical smell. Ruins your/our health and the surrounding atmosphere. Please bring real firewood. Clean up after use and yourselves. Check for “no burn” days, else you could get a ticket. Be smart. Be safe. Thanks.

Lots of fire pits! We got the last pit on a Saturday at around 1pm. Better to get here early to hold one or just do what a lot of people do and dig a pit in the sand for your fire. Definitely gets more and more crowded as it gets closer to sunset. No one really wearing a mask here ?

Great beach to relax with family and/or friends. Dog friendly and a section of the beach allows bonfires. The sign say bonfires only permitted in pits but a bunch of beach goers where building their fire in the sand. A good alternative on the weekends when pits are all occupied.

Beautiful and easy free parking! As an out of town visitor it’s good to know there’s not a restroom that I could see. We arrived at this lovely, soft beach to have a winter solstice bonfire and realized that there are no fires allowed for a couple of months. Otherwise clean, quite windy, and a little nerve wracking with the undertow for those with little ones.

Is Ocean Beach open May 30th, 2020?

  • 3/5 Daniel C. 3 years ago on Google
2 stars or 5, depending on weather. IF it's actually not windy and is warm enough to enjoy a beach bonfire, then it's probably also a Spare the Air day with no fires allowed. But there are lots of bonfire pits, so there's that.

(Translated by Google) Good place to relax. Whether you are sitting or walking on the beach, or sitting in the car heading west, you can feel the charm of the Pacific Ocean, especially at the sunset when the wind is not strong, and the sunset has reddened the entire sky.
